THE IOWA CONFERENCE

The IIAC affirms the following values:

INTEGRITY — The IIAC strives for the highest standard of ethical conduct and fair play with each member institution expected to fully comply with all NCAA, IIAC, and institutional policies and rules in the operation of its athletic programs. Member institutions are responsive to the needs of both female and male student athletes, and are governed by principles of fairness and equity in their approach to funding, staffing, and overall support for campus athletic programs. The conference expects that institutional presidents have the ultimate responsibility and final authority for the conduct of the intercollegiate athletics programs at the institutional, conference and national levels and in that context seek to operate institutional and conference programs with cost effectiveness and efficiency.

INTEGRATION — The IIAC supports the active recruitment of student athletes as a means of achieving the mission of each member institution while striving to ensure student athletes are fully participating and fully integrated into the life and mission of each campus. Toward this end, the IIAC supports and encourages broad participation in athletics and other co-curricular activities and campus groups. Student athletes are required to meet the same admissions and academic performance standards as the general student and receive the same opportunities and privileges accorded to every student to ensure a high quality educational experience leading to the successful completion of their educational goals.

ACHIEVEMENT — The IIAC seeks to promote spirited competition, the highest level of sportsmanship, and strong performance in each sport. Student athletes of all backgrounds are encouraged to practice ethical decision making, to shape their lives in service to others, and to model socially responsible community engagement. Student athletes strive to develop and strengthen themselves in ways that bring academic and athletic success and recognition in the conference, the region, and nationally.

CHARACTER — The IIAC stresses and promotes the values and benefits of athletic participation in character formation and leadership development. Knowing that team and individual sports provide learning and leadership experiences that result in character development, member institutions and the IIAC strive to create an environment for athletics where learning, leadership, and character development prevail.

Steve Helminiak enters his 22nd year as a football coach and his first as the head football coach at Loras College.

Helminiak returned to Loras College in 2011, rejoining the Duhawk football staff as the offensive line coach. A 1991 graduate of Loras College with a degree in business management, Helminiak played four seasons as an offensive and defensive lineman for coach Bob Bierie, who is the all-time wins leader at Loras College.

After his playing career as a Duhawk, Helminiak joined Bierie’s staff as a student-assistant, working his way up to become the offensive line coach and eventually the offensive coordinator at the conclusion of his first go-round with the Duhawks.

Helminiak spent 11 seasons (1990-2000) on Bierie’s staff and was his longest tenured assistant. During those 11 seasons, the Duhawk football program went 64-45-1, a winning percentage of 59 percent.

Prior to Helminiak’s return to Loras, he was the head football coach at Southern Oregon University (2006-2010), a NAIA program. During his time at Southern Oregon, Helminiak steered the program through turbulent times. With no conference and only three NAIA programs on the west coast at the time, SOU played more NCAA Division II and NCAA FBS I teams than NAIA opponents. Helminiak compiled an 11-6 record versus NAIA opponents, including a 4-1 record against perennial NAIA power Azusa Pacific University. Throughout his time at SOU, he coached one AFCA All-American, five VSN All-Americans, the 2009 NAIA Independent Offensive Player of the Year and 31 NAIA All-Independent selections. Helminiak was also instrumental in starting the Raider Red Zone – the Football Alumni Club of Southern Oregon University. In the 2004 and 2005 seasons, Helminiak served as the offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at Rockford College. In those two seasons, Rockford posted back-to-back 7-win seasons, compiling a 14-6 overall record. In just two seasons, his offenses produced one Nationally Ranked Quarterback – Passing Efficiency – 12th NCAA Division III, one Nationally Ranked Rusher – 21st NCAA Division III, one Nationally Ranked Rushing Offensive – 15th NCAA Division III, one All-Conference Most Valuable Lineman, 22 All-Conference Selections, and one Academic All-Conference selection. On December 3, 2013, Helminiak was named the 27th head coach in Loras College football history. In all, during Helminiak’s two stretches at Loras, he has coached two All-American selections, one GTE Academic All-District selection, three NCAA III All-West Region selections, 17 All-Conference Selections (OL/TE’s only), and numerous Honorable Mention All-Conference selections. His offensive line units paved the way for ten 1,000-yard rushers, and the top two rushers in Loras College history, both of whom rank among the all-time leading rushers in Division III. Helminiak is also responsible for recruiting 14 All-Conference selections. Helminiak and his wife, Kelli (Forde) (’98), live in Dubuque with their five children: Elizabeth, Emily, Kathryn, Joseph and Lauren.

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH JAKE OLSENJake Olsen, a native of Osage, Iowa, enters his first season as associate head coach with the Duhawk football program. Olsen will also coach the quarterbacks and handle play-calling duties as offensive coordinator. Olsen comes to Loras College from the University of Dubuque (2011-2013) where he helped guide the Spartan offensive group to three of the most productive statistical seasons in school history, including the 2011 Iowa Conference Championship. During his three years at UD, Olsen worked directly with four First-Team All-Iowa Conference selections, including two different back-to-back Iowa Conference Offensive MVPs as well as the Gagliardi Award winner, which honors the top NCAA Division III Player of the Year. Previously, Olsen served as offensive coordinator at Southern Oregon University (2006-2010), producing three NAIA All-Americans

including the NAIA Independent Offensive Player of the Year in 2009. Olsen’s offenses produced 14 All-Independent NAIA performers, two 1,000-yard rushers in back-to-back seasons, in addition to serving as the team’s strength and conditioning coordinator. He began his coaching career at Rockford College (2003-2005), where he received his master’s in teaching. He coached the Regents’ quarterbacks and wide receivers while holding the title of passing game coordinator. In 2005, the Regents re-wrote 13 school offensive records behind the arm of All-Northern Athletics Conference quarterback Travis Stocker, who finished in the top-ten of passing efficiency. Olsen is a 2003 graduate of Wartburg College, where he received an elementary education degree. At Wartburg, he was a four-year letter winner in both football and basketball, earning All-Conference honors in both sports multiple times. He was a member of two Iowa Conference football championships and one Iowa Conference basketball championship as a student-athlete. In 2013, Olsen was inducted in the Wartburg College Athletic Hall of Fame. Olsen and his wife, Liz, reside in Dubuque with their three children: Liam, Noah and Cadence.

The collegiate athletic season at Loras College lasts, on average, four months, but for the dedicated Duhawk athletes, the strength and conditioning program continues year-round. To be a contender in the highly competitive Iowa Conference, the Duhawks voluntarily train during the off-season with a comprehensive strength and conditioning program designed to help improve athletic performance and reduce injury. Each athlete is closely monitored by Director of Strength & Conditioning, Josh Edwards. Edwards designs personalized workouts for each student-athlete based on the physical demands of the position they play.

A native of Pella, Iowa, Edwards attended Central College and received his bachelor’s degree in exercise science and health promotion in 2003. While at Central, he was a four-year member of the football team, earning the Kuyper Award during the 2002 season for his outstanding contributions to the team. He also served three years as an intern in the strength and conditioning department. After graduation, he worked one year as the assistant strength and conditioning coach.

Edwards attended Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota and completed his master’s degree in educational leadership. While at Winona State, he worked as the graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach for two years. After finishing his schooling, Edwards stayed at Winona State, changing roles to director of football strength & conditioning and defensive line coach.

Edwards was the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He was in charge of the men’s and women’s golf and tennis programs, and assisted with the football program.

Edwards has been a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) since 2001 and is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). He is certified in basic first aid, CPR, and is an ARC Professional Rescuer.

Presently, Edwards is in his seventh year as director of strength and conditioning, his sixth season in charge of the linebackers, and third year as the defensive coordinator for the Duhawks.

Josh resides in Dubuque with his wife, Tristen, and their son, Jackson.

Bob is now in his fourth season as assistant offensive line coach. He retired from Dubuque’s Molo Companies in 2010. In 2011, he offered his services as a volunteer to the Duhawk football program. Bucko pioneered the resurrection of collegiate football at Loras from 1973-1978 during the “club football” years. He held positions as offensive line coach, assistant head coach and was named head coach in 1976.

During his tenure, the Duhawks won four Region 7 Championships. The 1973 squad was ranked No. 2 in the nation. The team was invited to play in the National Club Sports Association’s National Championship game at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania against No. 1 ranked Duquesne University. Unfortunately, logistic and financial constraints prohibited the Duhawks from participating.

In 1976, as head coach, his “club team” entered the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (today’s UMAC). Loras was the only “club” team in the conference; the others were full NAIA varsity programs. In its first season in the conference, the “club” Duhawks earned the UMAC Co-Championship. During Bucko’s time with the 1970s Duhawks, there were 32 NCSA All-American and 20 All-Conference UMAC selections. Bob has also coached high school football in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

He served our country as a United States Navy Fleet Marine Force Combat Corpsman during the Vietnam War and is a proud graduate of Loras College.

42LORAS COLLEGE FOOTBALL

2014 SEASON PREVIEWAfter a disappointing 2013 season, the Loras College football team features several new looks for the upcoming season. With new head coach Steve Helminiak at the forefront, the Duhawks look to regain prominence within the Iowa Conference. This season’s schedule boasts non-conference contests against Elmhurst College, University of Wisconsin-Stout, and Augustana College, along with the usual gauntlet of Iowa Conference foes. Even with plenty of returning talent, the Duhawks have been picked to finish eighth in the Iowa Conference Preseason Poll.

Coach Helminiak’s biggest emphases on the upcoming season are to help guide change and improvement.

Helminiak doesn’t expect results to happen overnight, but he believes that results will begin to happen this year. This is not Helminiak’s first head coaching position, as he was previously at Southern Oregon University from 2006-2010. He believes that his past experiences as a head coach have bettered him to take over the helm at his alma mater.

“It was really a great teacher in terms of how to prepare myself,” Helminiak said. “I’m now much more advanced in terms of being ready to be a head coach.”

This year’s roster flaunts 52 incoming freshmen that Helminiak and the rest of the coaching staff helped put together. The coaching staff looked to recruit a higher caliber of student-athletes that are achievers in both the classroom and on the field.

“What adding these guys has done is raise the competitive level on the field. It’s going to be tougher to win and hold down a position; every day is a battle,” Helminiak said.

This year’s offense features a new look, as new Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator Jake Olsen comes over after spending three seasons as the offensive coordinator at the University of Dubuque. Olsen’s offense features an up-tempo, high-energy approach, which will look to improve from last year’s offense, which struggled to put points on the board. Olsen wants his guys to get back to enjoying college football.

“I think you’re going to see them having a lot of fun out there,” Olsen said.

One thing that Olsen has tried to stress since becoming a Duhawk is putting the “players first, formations second, and plays third.”

This year’s quarterback position still has yet to be determined. Senior Dylan Jones has been the starter for the past two seasons, but freshman Robert Kelly will challenge Jones for the starting spot. There is also more depth at the position with returning juniors Anthony Adams and Nik Schulte.

The receiving corps this year consists of a number of individuals that can have an immediate impact on the offense. Senior Nate Even is back and is what Olsen calls a “playmaker with great hands and talent.”

Also returning is junior Jon Powers who will provide a big body on the outside, along with sophomore Danny Willis, who brings a unique slot receiver skillset. Sophomore transfer from University of Dubuque, Earl Gibson, will also provide depth for the Duhawk receivers.

At the tight end position, senior Tom Zoeckler looks to be a force in both the run and pass game. Zoeckler will also provide much needed senior leadership on this young team.

2014 SEASON PREVIEW

43@LORASCOLLEGEFB

2014 SEASON PREVIEW“We are trying to instill what we want this program to be by laying out a path for them,” Zoeckler said. “We all have a common goal and interest that all the freshmen and young guys are buying into.”

The offensive line will look to become a force with multiple returning starters, as well as possible impact freshmen. With juniors David Roche and Brendan Rosner helping lead the charge, along with sophomore Joe Pagura, this year’s set of Duhawk big men has the much needed experience to be successful. Olsen also mentioned the talented freshmen that help round out this group and find the right set of five starters.

The Duhawk running game looks to be in good hands this year with returning starter Nate Carrier back to lead the way. Carrier was a First Team All-Conference selection in 2012, and has accumulated 1,839 rushing yards in the past two seasons. There will also be depth provided in the backfield by senior Calvin Miller, sophomore Zach Tade and freshman Amos Lavela.

On the other side of the ball, the defense showcases an influx of young bodies to compliment familiar faces. Even with the change at head coach, the leader of the defense has remained the same as Defensive Coordinator Josh Edwards is back for his third year calling the shots. Edwards believes that there is plenty of experience to complement all of the freshmen that could make an immediate impact.

Up front, senior captain Will Tumberger, who looks to continue to wreak havoc in the backfield after a productive 2013 season, leads the Duhawks. The 6-1, 245-pound senior was fourth on the team with 48 tackles, led the team with 8.5 tackles for a loss and three sacks in 2013. The defensive line also includes St. Cloud State transfer, Liam Kirwan. Joining Kirwan and Tumberger will be senior Robert Anderson and sophomore transfer Austin Epple, all of whom will provide Loras with a deep unit on the line.

“I believe that this will be the strong point of our defense,” Kirwan said of the defensive line.

The linebackers will also be a strong point, returning the top-two leading tacklers from the 2013 season in sophomore Calvin Harridge and junior Logan Kuehl. Harridge was the team leader with 86 total tackles and Kuehl followed suit, totaling 80 tackles. Sophomore Damon Davies and junior J.P. Awe will round out the linebackers.

Rounding out the defense, the secondary will showcase a mix of experience and young talent. At safety, the senior trio of Mike Canevello, Dave Pirkle and Tucker Brady will lead the Duhawks along with defensive newcomer Dan Vatch, who made the transition from wide receiver to safety this summer. The cornerback position will exhibit the young talent that the coaching staff is anxious to see in action. Freshmen Maurice Young and Keshaun Smith will be key contributors, along with junior Wes Bowers.

Edwards said that he expects Young to be the “biggest splash in the Iowa Conference.” He continued, “Since day one, Maurice has looked smooth and picked up the defensive naturally. He has a very bright future.”

This year’s specialists have provided an open competition for who will get playing time at punter and kicker. With multiple young players, this position looks to be a mystery that has yet to be decided.

With as many new pieces and features that Loras has entering this season, September marked the start to a new era in Loras College football.
