Early Childhood

Early Childhood Family Education Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) provides classes that parents and children can attend together. Classes are offered mornings, afternoons and evenings throughout the year.

Dates for the fall semester are September 8 - January 16, 2015. Registration will begin on tuesday, August 5 at 8:30 a.m. Classes fill quickly, so don’t delay in registering! Full course descriptions and online registration are available at: www.springlakeparkschools.org/ECFE.

Most class fees are based on a sliding fee scale. No resident of the Spring Lake Park School District will be excluded because of the inability to pay listed class fees.

Preschool and Parent-Child Preschool school readiness programs for 3, 4, and 5 year oldsPreschool helps children develop skills and behaviors to prepare them for kindergarten. State-licensed teachers make learning fun through creative experiences that teach skills in literacy, math, science, social and emotional and physical development and the arts. Our preschool curriculum is aligned with the district’s kindergarten goals. Preschool information (including a program video) is available online at www.SpringLakeParkSchools.org. All classes at Woodcrest Elementary.

Registration for the 2015-16 and summer 2015 Spring Lake Park Schools Preschool programs will begin in March. Information about preschool registration will be placed on the district website at www.SpringLakeParkSchools.org/preschool and will also be sent by mail to families with children eligible for preschool next September.

spring lake park school district’s Early Childhood programs offers many quality learning opportunities for children from birth to kindergarten and their parents.

Early Childhood now offers classes at Woodcrest Elementary in Fridley and at the nEW Early Childhood Family Center (7925 Able St nE, Spring Lake Park). Both facilities offer age-appropriate, fun classrooms that are safe for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their parents. All teachers are licensed by the state of Minnesota. Come and see what Spring Lake Park Early Childhood has to offer its youngest learners!

Discovery Days Discovery Days is open every day of school, and most non-school days as well. Full-time or part-time, open 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., for children three years of age by September 1st of the current school year. Housed at the Early Childhood Family Center, 7925 Able St. NE, Spring Lake Park. Only $185 per week for full-time care.

prEsCHool (ages 3-4)Play is a child’s work! Children are playful by nature. Their earliest experiences exploring with their senses lead them to play and to learn. When they learn and play with joy, then it’s a positive experience.

prE-kindErgartEn (pre-K students)It’s Kindergarten Prep! We collaborate with our Learn & Play Preschool staff to integrate the same curriculum throughout our full-day program, working with students to foster kindergarten readiness.

Before and After School (grades K-8)Activities are designed to enhance the cognitive, physical and creative development of our students and to provide time for hobbies and friends in a safe, supportive environment. Full-time or part-time, open 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Child Care – School Release Days 2014-2015 School is out; our Child Care is open! At Learning Ventures, your child has extra time for hobbies and friends in a safe, supportive environment. Staff prepares activities to provide hands-on experiences that encourage children to be creative, think critically, develop self-direction, and experience a sense of belonging. Celebrate Health and FitnessDuring our school release days throughout the year, we will highlight the importance of nutrition, regular exercise, engaging hobbies and relaxing activities for good physical and mental fitness. Our days will include fun, hands-on projects to encourage healthy eating habits and a variety of recreational games and pastimes to provide for vigorous physical activity and fun. Bag lunch and beverage needed each day. Children need suitable clothing for outdoor play.

Youth Enrichment

Spring Lake Park Community Education and the Parks and Recreation Department offer youth many opportunities for physical activity, academic enrichment, and creative expression.

Youth Community Education classes, called Afterschool Adventures, have course codes that start with CE. Afterschool Adventures classes offer reduced rates through the early-bird dates, discounted rates for students enrolled in Learning Ventures child care programs during the times of the class, and scholarship rates for students receiving free or reduced-price lunches. Watch for flyers with more information throughout the fall.

Register early to avoid cancellation of your class. Regrettably, we must cancel classes that have low enrollment.

Science ExplorersScience sparks wonder in the world around us. Our hands-on activities motivate exploration by budding inventors, engineers, chemists and more. Check out the Science Explorers web-site at www.science-explorers.net.

Wizard school (grades K-5)Join us as we investigate a wizard’s laboratory and learn the science behind the magic. Students will learn to harness electricity to make their own wand and explore the secret world of alchemy as they create scientific potions and more in this fun, hands-on imaginative class.

introduction to Clay (grades 4 and 5) Working with clay is a common favorite activity for students in Mr. Bowen’s art classes. In this after-school class, students will explore a variety of methods for working with clay, including the skills of hand-building and coil-building. Students will also work with the pottery wheel, and they will learn about glazing and the firing process of the kiln. Clay is an area of art in which Mr. Bowen specializes, and students will be actively engaged in this creative hands-on class.

drawing adventures! (grades K-5)Drawing Adventures is a core class for any young artist building skills and exploring art. Young Rembrandts will teach students to draw – the fundamental skill of all visual arts – using sequential, ordered process. Computer ExplorersClasses designed to provide students with hands-on opportunities to increase computer knowledge and to discover the endless possibilities for technology use. Learn more about Computer Explorers online at www.computerexplorers.com.

lego minecraft Engineering (grades 1-5 and 4-6)Student builders will use paper crafts and Legos to create mob figures, custom blocks, torches, mosaics, custom biomes and terrains from the Minecraft Video Game! Builders will be challenged to bring their virtual designs from the game to life. Most materials will be for class use only. lEo ClubThe Leo Club is a volunteer community service organization that is made up of Spring Lake Park High School students. The mission is to complete community service activities for the school and community. The club meets every Wednesday right after school to plan and complete service activities and projects. Examples of projects include Highway cleanup, Feed My Starving Children, Lions Pancake breakfasts and many more.

A Leo member is not required to complete a certain amount of activities. Each member participates in the service activities based on their schedule. Also, IT’S FREE to participate.

spring lake park Bowling ClubAll SLPHS and Westwood MS students are welcome to join the Spring Lake Park Bowling Club sponsored by SLP Schools Community Education. Practices are held at 3:30 – 5 p.m. at the Blainebrook Bowling Center on Monday and Thursday each week until the competition starts. Students can join the Club at anytime throughout the season. Competitions are held each week with other high schools in the area.

Cost is $85.00 to participate. Club will provide team shirts. Bowlers need to supply their own transportation.

NEW – trap shooting - Fall sEasonThe purpose of the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League is to attract students to participate in shooting sports while creating a friendly competition among high schools throughout Minnesota. With the assistance of hundreds of volunteer coaches and parents, student athletes in grades 6 through 12 represent their high school and compete in weekly trap shooting at their local shooting range. Scores are submitted online and compared against other high school trap teams within their conference.

panther ski/snowboard ClubAll Spring Lake Park High School and Middle School students are invited to join the Ski and Snowboard Club! Community Education goes to great effort to make skiing and snowboarding not only a great activity, but also a safe, fun, and social experience. In 2014-15 we have after-school trips on Fridays and at least two all-day trips on school release days. For more information and to register, keep an eye out for flyers and check the Spring Lake Park Community Education website later in the fall!

Community Education is partnering with Safeway to provide Driver’s Education. Students will receive 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of private behind-the-wheel lessons, satisfying the State requirements for teen drivers. Instructors are licensed by the MN Dept. of Public Safety, meeting Minnesota’s background checks and testing requirements.

pantHEr run 9:30 a.m.Children run around the 1/4 mile track trying to catch the Spring Lake Park Panther mascot!

5k/2k raCE 10:00 a.m.The 5K run and 2K walk will begin and end at the High School’s Panther Stadium with a course that winds through the Spring Lake Park community. All children, families, strollers, wagons, etc are welcome to participate!

Family CarniVal 9:00 a.m. – noonCarnival activites will include inflatable bouncers face painting, crazy hair, tattoos, and other fun activities for kids as well as food vendors and music!
