1 2014 Election Results Summary The votes are in and the election is over, and while most of the nation witnessed a wave of Republican victories in Washington and state capitals, here in California, both Republicans and Democrats have a reason to celebrate. Democrats can claim a victory as Jerry Brown glided into a historic fourth term as governor and his fellow Democrats held onto every statewide office. Republicans can do the same with their success in picking-up enough legislative seats in the state Senate and possibly the Assembly to deny the Democrats a powerful two- thirds supermajority. In the Assembly, do not expect to see some familiar faces. Already defeated are Democrat incumbents Steve Fox (District 36) and Sharon Quirk-Silva (District 65). Incumbent Assembly Member Al Muratuschi (District 66) is trailing Republican candidate David Hadley by nearly 3,000 votes but has yet to concede the race. In what might be the biggest surprise of the night, Republican candidate Catharine Baker is ahead of Democrat Tim Sbranti for the open seat in the 16 th Assembly District, previously represented by Assembly Member Joan Buchanan (Democrat). Depending on how the election results hold, the Democrats will lose their super majority in the Assembly by one or two seats. The democrats did pick up the 44 th Assembly District previously held by Jeff Gorell, who ran for the 26 th Congressional seat against incumbent Julia Brownley. In this district, Democrat candidate Jacqui Irwin claimed victory Republican candidate Rob McCoy by almost 2,000 votes. In yet another strange turn of events, incumbent Assembly Member Raul Bocanegra is trailing in the 39 th Assembly District to newcomer Patty Lopez. Both are Democrats. Less than 200 votes separate the two so late absentees and provisionals will decide the outcome of this race. In the state Senate, the supermajority was lost in two key races. Republican candidate Janet Ngyuen won sixty percent of the vote to defeat Democrat Jose Solorio (District 34) and Republican Senator Andy Vidak (District 14) received fifty-five and a half percent of the vote to stave off a challenge from Democrat Luis Chavez. Additionally, we will likely see a game of musical chairs in 2015 as several sitting Senators were elected to Congress. Senators Mimi Walters (Republican), Steve Knight (Republican), and Mark DeSaulnier (Democrat) who still had time left in the Senate will be leaving and special elections will be held to fill their vacancies. The Senate Democrats will begin the legislative cycle with twenty-six seats as former Senator Rod Wright seat remains vacant until the upcoming special election in December.
