Al Jarreau set to perform on Friday nightBy Christian McPhateFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

The rhythmic voice percus-sion reverberating through themicrophone echoes a mixtureof beebop beats tinged with arhythm and blues feel.Sometimes it'll sound as if anelectric guitar is playing as thesinger creates these lyricalvibrations. Some call it “scat,”but it's a sound exclusive to oneartist whose spent more thansix decades perfecting thetechnique and earning him ascore of Grammy Awards andthe only vocalist in history tonet wins in three different cat-egories (jazz, pop and R&B.)“It's freedom in the music,”

the legendary jazz singer says,“and feeling the syncopationand putting sounds to it.”He wasn't the first to

attempt this type of vocal per-cussion. The great EllaFitzgerald and John Hendrixwere doing something similarin their music. Blues and Jazzartists had been flirting withthis style for decades. But at 74-years-old Al

Jarreau is no ordinary vocalist. His unique blend of vocal beatsand soulful lyrics has appearedon more than 20 albums andgarnered a legion of fans acrossthe globe, earning this contem-porary jazz artist a place as oneof the greatest singers of the21st century. And he'll be head-lining the Denton Arts & Jazz

Festival at 9 p.m. on Friday,April 25.“You guys are well down the

road, and I'm late to the party,”says Jarreau of his first appear-ance at this year's festival. “I'vegot make up for lost time.”For his first appearance on

the Wells Fargo/Budweiserstage, Jarreau plans to singclassics like “Take Five” and“We're In This Love Together”from some of his earlierrecords, “Hearts Horizon” and“Random Act of Love” andsome of his newer stuff like“Scootcha Booty” from AlJarreau and the MetropoleOrkest: Live, a performancewith a respectedDutch orches-tra.Ever since he was five years

old and sitting in the back ofhis father's car, Jarreau hasbeen making rhythmic soundsas if he were mimicking themusic he would hear on theradio to entertain himself. He'd do the same thing whenhe was walking to the grocerystore in Milwaukee, where hegrew up. Although he was aregular attendee of church andoftentimes performed musicwith his parents on Sundaymornings, most people hepassed just steered aroundhim, saying, “Exuse me, I'll letyou go past, mister.”Something about music,

though, caused not only hisfeet and body to move but also

strange lyrical sounds echofrom his soul as the power ofthe song took over. He was justlearning how to express him-self vocally.“Everybody's got some

oinks, squeaks and quacks oftheir own,” Jarreau says. “I justdiscovered my own oinks, squeaks and quacks and putthem into music.”But he didn't start perform-

ing these “oinks, squeaks andquacks” until after his timemoonlight with George Dukeand his jazz trio at the HalfNote. That's when hemet JulioMartinez, a flamenco guitarist, who helped him harness therhythmic sound of Brazil thatwas influencing Jarreau at the

time.“It just took me away, took

my heart and my mind,”Jarreau says, “and my eyesrolled back in my head as Iheard that music, and I foundmy way to those percussivesounds.”It was one of the most

important periods in his life,he says, when that stuff beganto really explode when therewere no other instrumentsaround. “It was just me and aguitar player.”Jarreau has shared the stage

with some legendary acts overthe years. He shared two dateswith Miles Davis, whom helater found out loved hismusic, in Los Angeles. He'salso jammed with DavidSanborn, Rick Braun andGeorge Benson. He's currently recording an

album in honor of GeorgeDuke entitled “My OldFriend.” Layla Hathaway,Diane Reeves and Jeffrey

Osbourne are also makingappearances on his new offer-ing.“It's really a 'fire in the belly

project' for me,” he says. “It'sgreat for people like me whoare constantly looking for 'firein the belly projects.' Keep thatfire happening, keep thosespirits high. It's all over therecord we're doing from top tobottom.”His first visit to the Denton

Arts & Jazz Festival promisesto be a memorable experiencefor festival goers, and Jarreauis excited about sharing hispassion for music. Jarreau willbe backed by his sextet andSymphony show.“Having fun,” Jarreau says.

“That's what this period in mylife highlights more than any-thing else. Is still having grati-tude and thanks and doing itwith joy and happiness. That'schurch, man. If you under-stand that, you make peoplefeel better. It fires me up.”

Colorado couple transforms flowers from garden to frameBy Jane R. LeBlancFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

More than 9,000 feet highin the Colorado mountainsgrow some of the brightestflowers you’ll ever see.Colorado columbines, pansies, coral bells, cosmos, roses andmore sprout from the groundamidst hundreds of others, higher than most ski slopes, away from the hustle and bus-tle. The warm days in Bailey,Colorado, coupled with coolnights and extreme elevation, help produce an array of richcolor nothing but MotherNature could create. Fromthere, Guy and Barbara Bealsof Blossoms of the Rockies, make sure that beauty is pre-served forever. The flowers, all native

Colorado wildflowers, wereplanted in the Beals’ privategarden with very specificintentions. When they are attheir absolute boldest, whenthey are in full bloom and atfull potential, they’ll beplucked from their stems andtransformed into a differentkind of art – pressed flowercreations, colorful bouquetsand landscapes made fromnothing more than a woodbacking, paper, glue andpressed flowers.“We move through life so

quickly, that most people don’twant to take that time to col-lect Mother Nature’s beautyand press them and then cre-

ate something out of them,”Guy says. But he and his wifetake the time, inspired by theirlove of nature.

The Beals will be showingmore than 500 pieces at thisyear's Denton Arts and JazzFestival. This year will be theirthird trip to North Texas.

It all started about 35 yearsago when Guy, a cabinet-maker by trade, helped awoman craft some flowerpresses. When she completed her

work, she gifted one of thepresses to Guy.“All from the love of being

outside, enjoying MotherNature…and now we get paidto go pick flowers and gocamping,” Guy says. Now, hundreds of creations

travel the road with the coupleas they make their way to theDenton Arts & Jazz Festival, one of the bigger festivals theyvisit.“I have a full season of grow-

ing flowers and pressing thembefore I can even begin tothink about making the firstpiece,” Guy says. He and hiswife pick more than 1 millionblossoms each season. The patience and effort

required makes flower press-ing somewhat of a dying art.Thankfully, Guy and

Barbara aren’t letting it.

Sisters’ fine fiddling electrifies Americana with a classic Texas twistBy Amelia JaycenFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

Texas belles Grace, Sophiaand Hulda Quebe slice up asweet tension in the air as theirviolins raise and the bandcounts off.Bursting into the first meas-

ure of classic songs, they hitstraight to the heart withTexas-style fiddling that rousesaudiences, turns heads andstops Jimmy Buffet in histracks. It’s no lie when Buffet says,

“Man can they play.”Their lightning-fast fiddling

played with the infectious flairof three Texas sweethearts getsaudiences tapping and grin-ning ear-to-ear, and then thegirls kick it up a notch withvintage-style vocal harmoniz-ing that coats the stage withhoney, awakening the core ofTexas music with a truly origi-nal style. The Quebe (pronounced

KWAY-bee) Sisters will per-form Saturday, April 26, at 7p.m. on the WellsFargo/Budweiser Jazz Stage, followed by their friendsAsleep at the Wheel at 9 p.m.The Sisters’ twist on coun-

try, western and cowboy songsmixed with western swing, jazz and bluegrass influencesresonates with both Texas andnational audiences.Their February 2014 album

Every Which-A-Way won theCrescendo Award by WesternMusic Association and theWestern Swing Album of theYear from the Academy ofWestern Artists.TheQuebe Sisters’ history of

wildly consuming shows allbegan in Denton when theyoung Quebe girls ages seven,10, and 12 saw a fiddling con-test at the 1998 North TexasState Fair.“When we heard fiddle

music, we thought ‘Wow! Thatlooks fun!’” Hulda Quebe said. They connected with Sherry

and JoeyMcKenzie as instruc-tors and mentors, began train-ing and catapulted into astring of competition awardsand live performances, an

adventure that landed themon the stages of the Grand OleOpry and the Marty StuartShow. Thanks to nudges from

McKenzie and advice fromRicky Skaggs, the sistersadded vocals to their rapidlyexpanding repertoire, and they

debuted their singing in 2005.Their second album, Timeless, was recorded at Johnny Cash’shistoric Cash Cabin Studio inHendersonville, Tennessee. Inrecent years, they have workedwith Rosana Eckert of theUNT College of Music forvocal training.

The Quebe Sisters Band, originally three fiddles, threevocals, guitar by JoeyMcKenzie and bass by GavinKelso, is making big changesthis year as McKenzie andKelso focus on other projects.Joining the sisters are two newbandmates, twin sisters Penny

Lea andKaty Lou Clark of ThePurple Hulls.“We love traveling, we love

coming back to places like theDentonArts& Jazz festival, welove how many things you cancreate with the music,” Huldasaid.

Local artist, musician brings stained glass artwork to festivalBy Jane R. LeBlancFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

A few blocks from thefamous Denton Square, onBolivar Street, sits a smallhouse with white siding, turquoise framework andlavender doors where artistChristie Wood creates mes-merizing stained glass artworkthat she'll be showing and sell-ing in the civic center at thisyear's Denton Arts & JazzFestival.“It’s local,” Wood says, “but

more importantly, it’s the bestmusic. Ever.”Wood also has a passion for

music, and the festival givesher the chance to showcase allof her talents. She’ll be playingbaritone sax with FooMcBubba on Friday, April 25,and flute with the Jett Quarteton Sunday, April 27, at the fes-tival.Born in Texas City, Texas,

and raised in Shreveport,Louisiana, Wood graduatedfrom the University of NorthTexas in 1973, earning a bach-elor’s degree in music educa-tion.In 1993, she took a begin-

ners class in the art of stainedglass. “I wanted to exercise theartistic side of my brain,” shesays. Butwhatwasmeant to bea hobby quickly turned into apassion.A mere two years after tak-

ing her first class, Woodopened Art Glass Ensemblesand made stained glass hercareer.Almost 100 percent of her

work is commission-based.She creates pieces for

churches and private resi-dences and repairs broken art-work, too.Be sure to check her out in

Denton Bible Church offers woodworking tentBy Christian McPhateFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

Every year Denton Arts &Jazz Festival not only offersgreat music by world-renowned musicians like AlJarreau and his sextet andSymphony show (on Fridaynight), Asleep at theWheel (onSaturday night) and, of course,Brave Combo (on Sundaynight) but also arts and craftevents that have become a sta-ple of the Arts & Jazz experi-ence. Painted faces, temporarytattoos and painting birdhouses go hand-in-hand withBut painting bird houses

takes more than just slappinga coat of paint on a pre-madekit. They must be sanded, nailed, sanded, glued andsanded again. “It allows themto get some hands on experi-ence,” says Wayne Carrigan ofThe Sweat Team, a DentonBible Church organizationthat helps families in need. For 10 years now the Skilled

Workers for Every AvailableTask, or The Sweat Team, havebeen building bird houses, bird feeders and Bible bookstands in the Children's ArtTent at the Denton Arts & JazzFestival.Their belief in being good

servants to the communitycomes from scripture. So everyyear the church pays for all ofthe wood supplies with thehelp of donations and offersthe crafted works of art at nocost to the children.“We view this as a great

opportunity for us to have anoutreach in the community,”says Carrigan.

Carrigan points out thatchildren don't often get towork with wood tools any-more. But at the wood projectstent, they get handle a drillpress, a nail gun and a sander, under adult supervision ofcourse. But just the sound ofthe air thundering through anail gun as the nail slams intothe board leaves a child's handshaking but brings a smile tohis face.Thousands of children

attending the Denton Arts &Jazz Festival have walkedthrough the Children's ArtTent, requesting a bird houseor a sword, which has nowbeen substitutedwith a peanutbutter spreader. In previousyears, spacing was a problemfor all the projects and visitors, but this year The Sweat Teamwill be offering arts and craftsfor people of all ages in a30x60 tent. The team will also be intro-

ducing two new wood-cuttingprojects: the old 1930s ModelFord car and a sleek race car.Once sanded and put together, you'll have the opportunity topaint them the color or colorsof your choice.“And that's what makes it

rewarding,” says Carrigan. “It'sthe most organized chaos andmost tiring experience volun-teering. But when you thinkabout everything you've donefor the kids, you're ready fornext year.”Be sure to visit the

Children's Art Tent on Fridayand Saturday, April 25 and 26,at the Denton Arts & JazzFestival.

Asleep at the Wheel brings its American root swing revivalBy Aaron ClaycombFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

The boots on the ballroomfloor slide from left to right. Then front to back. The saxo-phone rattles, the piano keysdance, upbeat and lively, andthe fiddle and steel guitar slideand bend this southern-coun-try-style boogie. Since 1970,the acclaimed western swingband, Asleep at theWheel, haskept a certain bluesy-Southern-country tune morethan just alive.“Western swing ain’t dead,”

says frontman Ray Benson,“it’s Asleep at the Wheel.”Nine-time Grammy win-

ners, they’ve performed allover the world from the GrandOleOpry to the CountryMusicAwards to nearly every small-town ballroom in the U.S. Thebiggest king of country swingwill take the stage at 9 p.m.this Saturday, April 26, at the24th official Denton Arts &Jazz Festival.Drawing major inspirations

from jazz, the band has strongties with musicians from oneof the country’s lead jazzschools, Denton’s ownUniversity of North Texas. Butthis will be the first timeAsleep at the Wheel is per-

forming at the Denton Arts &Jazz Festival.Closing the Jazz Stage, on

Saturday night, with full onwestern swing, Asleep at theWheel follows The QuebeSisters Band, the Fort Worth-based fiddle and swing group. And this isn’t the first time

these sisters have performedon the same bill as Benson andhis band, adding their ownTexas swing tunes.Benson is the reason Asleep

at the Wheel is still blazing itsown western swing highway. He’s kept the tour bus goingfor more than four decades. The only original member ofthe band, he was named TexasMusician of the Year in 2004and Texan of the Year in 2011.Originally from Paw Paw,

West Virgina, Benson and theoriginal band members –Lucky Ocean (steel guitar),LeRoy Preston (drums), ChrisO’Connell (guitar) and GeneDobkin (bass) – moved toCalifornia with the goal to helprevive American roots music.Starting with more traditionalcountry and rock and roll, theband added its contemporaryjazz influence when key-boardist Floyd Domino joinedthe lineup. But it wasn’t until they

heard Merle Haggard’s tributealbum to Bob Wills – the god-father of western swing – thatthey really began swinging.Asleep at theWheel has had

singles all over the country

Billboard charts. In 2011,Texas called western swing theofficial music of the state, andnow a Texas-sized tradition, they even picked up the nick-name “the official band ofTexas,” and performed along-side country music legendsWillie Nelson, Bob Dylan andGeorge Straight.Over the years, band mem-

bers have brought their ownunique sound to Asleep at theWheel, Benson says. The bandusually consists of seven to 15of the finest musicians he cantalk into jumping in the tourbus.“The Wheel” has seen over

80 of the best musicians in thecountry genre.Current Asleep at theWheel

members playing at this year'sDenton Arts & Jazz Festivalinclude Benson (guitar andvocals), Dave Sanger (drums),Dave Miller (Bass), JasonRoberts (fiddle and vocals),Dan Walton (piano), EddieRivers (steel guitar) andnewest addition, Katy Holmes(fiddle and vocals) who’s tak-ing over for ElizabethMcQueen (acoustic guitar andvocals).

“[New band members]learn the parts that have comebefore and then they add theirpersonalities, their abilities ortheir ideas to the mix,” Bensonsays. “It’s always built uponwhat went before. But it’salways add what they can addto it.”Asleep at the Wheel origi-

nals like “Boogie Back toTexas,” “The Letter ThatJohnny Walker Read” are fullof grit, rock and roll and lots ofswing. Each of their songs ismixed andmashed from sever-al genres – the saxophone jazzsolo to the country fiddle to theblues guitar licks. They can reinvent any coun-

try classic, giving it a kick oftheir classic western swing. With Benson’s lead baritonevocals, Asleep at the Wheel’s“Route 66” rendition is a clas-sic soul-stirring-Texas-twang-boogie.“We’re not the hot act of the

day,” says Benson, but for overforty years, the mission hasalways remained the same:revive American roots. “We’vebeen up and down and wecontinue to play and do whatwe’re doing.”

Dancing Elk Designstransforms antlersinto fine jewelryBy Amelia JaycenFor the Denton Record-ChronicleAt 8,000 feet in the remote

mountains of Colorado Jeffand Myan Sorensen wanderthrough the late winter land-scape searching for deer andelk antlers. Used to spar forfemales and protect theherum, antlers are grownthroughout the spring and lostin the fall andwinter, a naturaltreasure left for the astutegatherer.“When you’re working with

a material that you have to goout and find, you get an eye forit,” Myan Sorensen said.“Living inColorado, antlerwasthe obvious medium for us,and the process translatesbeautifully.”Myan and her husband, Jeff,

have been gathering naturalmaterials for 25 years neartheir home in Crestone,Colorado and transformingthem into hand-crafted jewel-ry. Her husband's love for hik-ing and finding antlers andher background in silver-smithing led them to beginDancing ElkDesigns. This willbe their third year at theDenton Arts & Jazz Festival. The Sorensens take long

hikes in the mountains, exploring for antlers—thecycle of changing seasons, growth and loss of antlers is allpart of the process each year. Her husband roughs-out art

pieces from the antler usingtools found at any homeimprovement store. A glowingtorch turns the antler to awarm brown, and polishingbrings out a natural shine. Thepieces often mimic the shapeof the antler, drawing on thenatural tendencies. He'll craftearrings, barrettes or beltbuckles.

“Though we’ve been offereda lot of antlers from hunters,we prefer not to use them,”Myan said. “We view the shedantler as more of a gift fromthe earth, and then when yousit down with raw materials, some little doorway opens andthese creative things spill out.”These creative works of

antler art will be available forpurchase at this year's DentonArts & Jazz Festival.

Painting landscapes andflowers takes someone with asteady hand and an eye forMotherNature.Merry Glazneris one of those artists. Everyone of her pieces illuminatesher love and joy for life. It's only fitting that she'll be

sharing her paintings at thisyear's Denton Arts & JazzFestival.Although she's 72, her

advanced age hasn't impairedher skills with a brush. Glaznerplans to have more than 30 oiland watercolor paintings, allreasonably priced for pur-chase, at this year's festival. This will be her fourth appear-ance. Expect to see crowdfavorites like sunflowers, gar-den scenes and bluebonnetsfrom previous years. This year, Glazner is excited

to bring several small paint-ings of her sold-out cotton

pieces.“I didn’t know there would

be thatmuch interest but thereis a lot of people that knowwhat it is and remember,” shesaid.Glazner loves the interac-

tions with attendees of theDenton Arts & Jazz Festival. And if you take your childrenby her booth, she’ll show themhow she paints using a paletteknife to create images as if they

were inspired by Van Gogh. She paints with the immediacyof classic impressionists.“It’s just like color on top of

color beside color and makes[my paintings] vibrant,” shesaid.Showing her work at the

Denton Arts & Jazz Festival isthe highlight of her year, andyou'll be able to see her impres-sionistic paintings all threedays of the event.

Brave Combo set to close festival with performance Sunday nightBy Christian McPhateFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

Brave Combo has been partof the Denton Arts and JazzFestival since it was known asSpring Fling back in the early'80s. The band's show, whichcloses the three-day event, hasbecome a tradition for manygenerations of Dentonites.People will sit through a thun-derstorm just to watch thislegendary “new wave polkaband” perform classics from itsmore than thirty year history.“They were asking every-

body to leave,” says Carl Finch, the band's founder. “It washard call, but they had to callit.” So he and the band movedoff the stage but then noticedthe crowd just hunkeringdown under the trees, waitingfor the storm to pass. “It'spouring down rain, and they'redoing the exact thing theyshouldn't do.”But people wait all year long

to watch the band perform onSunday night. They'll plan theevent with family and friendsjust to be part of that BraveCombo vibe.“We consider that [the

Sunday night show] the epito-me of the homecoming idea,”says Finch. “We feel a sense ofbeing part of Denton as agreater family.”Since 1979 when the band

first hit the scene in Denton,Brave Combo has been mak-ing polka music hip to fans ofall ages by re-envisioning someof rock music's most memo-rable songs like “People areStrange” by the Doors, “PurpleHaze” by Jimi Hendrix and“Satisfaction” by The RollingStones. The band's also wontwo Grammys. The Brave Combo experi-

ence has caused 15,000 peopleeither to break out and danceto the band's version of the“Hokey Pokey” or sing “FlyingSaucer.” Headbanging toFinch's accordion playing/guitar slaying is also an accept-able response at their Sundaynight show. In fact, a full onmosh pit that dwarfs one you'dsee at a metal show will erupt

stage right sometime beforethe end of the night.“Sometimes people will sit

their chairs out there, not real-izing what's about to happen,”says Finch. “I feel more of abond with the Denton policeduring that set.”

Themoshing has been goingfor more than 10 years. It's theone time of year, he says, whenhigh school and young collegestudents can experience BraveCombo. “It's their time, andthe music just takes over.”“We don't really want to

subdue it, personally, becausewe enjoy the energy we getfrom that,” he says. “But peoplewho are there should beaware.”

Finch feels the Denton Arts& Jazz Festival is more thanjust a celebration—it's a home-

coming.“It's the one time of the year

when Denton seems to cometogether the most,” he says.Be sure to catch Brave

Combo's show at 7 p.m. onSunday, April 27, at the WellsFargo/Budweiser Jazz Stage.
