Strike Zone Baseball won the hostteam honors for the 2014 ConnieMack World Series after advancingout of the City Tournament for itsfifth straightC M W Sappearance.

    S t r i k eZone com-piled a 25-15record dur-ing the sum-mer, playingmore gamesand travel-ling to moretournamentsthan in pre-vious years,b u i l d i n gexperience head coach AdamMorrissey believes will be beneficialto his team entering the series.

That really helps you out as aplayer and gives you more confi-dence going into the series, he said.

One potential hang-up for theCardinals is the long layoff the teamwill have to deal with enteringFridays nightcap against theMidland Redskins. Morrissey andthe Strike Zone coaching staff havehad to balance keeping the Cardinals

    m o t i v a t e dw i t h o u tb u r n i n gthem out.

    I t st o u g h , M o r r i s s e ysaid of the19-day breaksince StrikeZ o n esecured thehost bid.After thecity tourna-ment, you

need to let them take a break for awhile. You dont want to burn themout on baseball.

But, he added, the players alsohave to be ready for Fridays game.

You dont want to be too hard on

them too early, Morrissey said. You want them to be at their bestFriday night for that game. Youdont want them to be at their best aweek ago. Its a little tricky becausethree weeks is a long time for base-ball players.

While the team works to keep itson-the-field skills sharp, Morrisseyisnt concerned about his playersmindset entering Friday. He said hisplayers understand what it means toplay in the CMWS and dont needextra motivation.

I dont have to say anything.Everyone whos on the field knows,Morrissey said. The last thing youwant is to be that guy drilling it inhow important it is and all that.

He said he also wants the team toenjoy these moments during theseries.

All of these kids are going to gooff to college soon, Morrissey said.Their lives are going to be movingon, and its their last time with theirbuddies, you know. Just experiencethe whole week with your families, enjoy it and take it in. Go out and

play and let it be. Theyre gonna beprepared. When Friday night hits, well be prepared to go.

The Detroit Metro Stars will bringsome new life to the Connie Mack WorldSeries.

The Metro Stars will be making theirfirst CMWS appearance after enteringNorth Central Regional for only the sec-ond time this year.

Detroit locked up the series bid witha 6-4 victory against the Longshots fromIllinois in the regional final.

This is a first for our organization,Metro Stars manager Shawn Maloneysaid. We know that this is the best tour-nament to be a part of.

Detroit had to battle back from adver-sity to qualify for the CMWS after drop-ping its opening pool game in the statetournament.

The Metro Stars recovered to advancethrough the bracket, and the team bringsa 42-5 record with it to Farmington.

Maloney said his team has found theright mix of players to be successful. Many of the players have been on thesame team since they were young, and

their success has brought in other goodplayers from the area.

We got the right players that havebeen together for a long time, Maloneysaid. They were good, and other kidswanted to play with them. We havespeed and power. Were good in allaspects of the game.

The Metro Stars have seven DivisionI players on the roster from MichiganState, Michigan and Central Michigan, including 6-foot-5-inch lefty GrantRuess, who was a 31st round draft pickby the Detroit Tigers and will throw nextyear for the Wolverines.

The North Central region hasnt wonthe series since 1988, but Maloneybelieves his group has the talent to makea deep run and be a threat for the cham-pionship.

I feel like weve got the team. Ourkids expect to win, he said. Weve gota shot.

The Metro Stars will have to wait fortheir shot to start the series. They willplay the final game of the opening roundagainst Bill Hood at 7:30 p.m. onSaturday.

The Danville Hoots return to the ConnieMack World Series after a two-year absence.

Hoots manager Don Johns is bringing histeam back to Farmington for the third timesince 2009, but he said qualifying this year cameas a surprise.

Were really young. I honestly didnt thinkwed be there, said Johns, whose team has 13of its 21 players graduating in the 2015 or 2016class. Weve played great, and it will set thestage for the future.

The California-based team will bring eightDivision I commits, including catcher TimSusnara, who was a 34th round draft pick bythe San Francisco Giants and will play collegeball at the University of Oregon.

The Danville team will rely a lot on defenseand hitting to help out an inexperienced pitch-ing staff that has lost players to offseason col-lege workouts.

Were going to play good defense. Theyvebeen very solid, and thats why were movingon, Johns said. Pitching is going to be a chal-lenge. We lost pitchers to summer programs, which has been a problem more so out Westthan in other parts of the country, I think.

The Hoots made it through the CMWS WestRegional, dropping only one game to the 2012CMWS champion and 2013 runner-up SoCalRenegades. The team struggled with theRenegades throughout the year, but a loss totheir SoCal rivals in Utah was the turning pointin the Hoots summer.

We lost in the Gates World Series to theRenegades. Sometimes, that can destroy a

young team or make you stronger,Johns said. Id say that loss made usstronger.

The Renegades were knocked out ofthe West Regional after losses to theLas Vegas Mayhem and NorCalBaseball. The Hoots went on to defeatNorCal 6-4 in the final to clinch the bid.

The Hoots will start their serieswith D-BAT Gallegos in the noon gameon Saturday. Johns emphasized pitch-ing will be key if his team is to win theopener and try to make a run at thetitle.

I think were going to have to get alot out of our pitching. Were going toplay defense. Our young pitchers willhave to keep us in the game. Whenweve been down, weve been able tocome back, Johns said. Every day isgetting tougher, and we cant afford tonot execute.

D-BAT Gallegos made it through theSouth Plains Regional to give the organ-ization a second team in the ConnieMack World Series this year, joining D-BAT Leach.

Roberto Gallegos brings a talentedbunch of young players to the series.Fourteen members of his squad havecommitted to Division I universities including the University of Texas, TexasTech, Arkansas, Rice, Texas Christianand Wichita State while only seven ofhis players have graduated high school.

We play with a lot of energy andenthusiasm. They play loose, Gallegossaid. They all know each other fromplaying in high school and are a tight-knit group.

Gallegos team battled throughpitching injuries throughout the sum-mer, losing five guys to Tommy Johnsurgery.

The injuries took their toll during theAmerican qualifier in South Troy, N.Y.,where the Dallas-based team reachedthe final against Frozen Ropes but fellshort of the CMWS bid.

D-BAT bounced back in the SouthPlains final, beating the DallasMustangs 3-0 to earn their CMWS spot.

The victory allowed Gallegos to adda couple of Mustangs to his bullpen andbolster the pitching staff.

We were able to get good arms, andwere ready to go, he said.

Gallegos is looking forward to bring-ing a team to Farmington after being anassistant on past D-BAT squads. He saidits a good boost for the program tohave a pair of teams in the CMWS forthe second time in three years.

Its a one-of-a-kind experience. Toget one team there is special, but gettingtwo is amazing, Gallegos said.

D-BAT Gallegos will open its serieswith Danville at noon on Saturday.

Gallegos said his team is preparedfor the tournament after a tough sum-mer of games.

I think well have to pitch and playdefense. The timely hitting will come,he said. We have a knack of takingadvantage of mistakes. Thats whatgood teams do. Weve been mentallytough.

The Bayou boys are coming back toFarmington.

Bill Hood Baseball is making its returnto the Connie Mack World Series for firsttime since 2010.

The team out of Mandeville, La.,advanced through the South EastRegional, knocking off 2013 CMWS cham-pion East Cobb Yankees for the bid.

The last time Bill Hood was in theCMWS, the team qualified through theSouth Plains Regional. Assistant coachCole Catalano was on the staff in 2010 andsaid he doesnt see much difference in thecaliber of talent between the two regions. Its difficult to get to Farmington, regard-less of the path his team takes, he said.

Youre going to get quality ball clubsno matter where you go, Catalano said.

Bill Hood hasnt been able to field ateam the past couple of seasons due towork obligations for Catalano and manag-er Chris Westcott.

Catalano said he was determined to getthe team back on the field and to qualifyfor the series.

Bill Hood got hot at the right time dur-ing the regional, knocking off the Yankeesand the Florida Legends on its way to theteams third CMWS appearance.

We swung the bats better than we hadall year, said Catalano, who played in Bill

Hoods first series appearance in 2002.We play a fast brand of ball with a lot ofblue collar guys.

Bill Hood pulls its players from a 60-mile radius in Louisiana. The team hasseven players committed to SoutheasternLouisiana University, where Catalano alsoplayed college ball.

We stay local, and these guys are allwithin an hour drive. Theyve playedagainst each other in high school andknow one another, Catalano said. All thekids buy into what were teaching. Werenot going to wow you, but weve cometogether as a team, gelled well, and thatswhy well have a lot of success.

Bill Hood will open the CMWS againsttournament newcomer Detroit Metro Starsat 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Were ready to have fun from thegames, to the parade, to the home runderby, Catalano said. Were bringing alittle Mardi Gras to Farmington.

The Frozen Ropes made theirConnie Mack World Series debut in2013 and have secured a return trip tothe 2014 tournament.

Danny Florences team returnsthree players off of its last squad andwill be looking for a deeper run thistime after making the final six a seasonago.

The Frozen Ropes won theAmerican Qualifier in South Troy,N.Y., for the second year in a row tomake their way back to Farmington.

The team from McKinney, Texas, won all seven games in the qualifierbut ran into trouble against D-BATGallegos in the tournament final.

The Ropes entered the bottom ofthe seventh inning trailing their Dallasrivals 3-1 before a three-run rally, capped by a walkoff double by JasonReitmeier, clinched the CMWS berth.During the tournament, Frozen Ropesalso beat the host South Troy, whoqualified out of the North AtlanticRegional, twice.

Its really unreal. This is a newteam except for three guys and onlyBryar Barnes played, Florence said.

Those returning players were inte-gral in reminding the rest of the play-ers why coming back to the CMWSwas the objective.

Its been the goal from the begin-

ning, Florence said. You cant reallyexplain Farmington. You just have toexperience it.

Florences squad will kick off theseries, playing the Puerto Rico qualifi-er Carolina Vaqueros in the first gameof the CMWS at 5:15 p.m. on Friday.

Frozen Ropes went 2-2 in their fourgames a season ago, defeating SouthTroy and the Illinois Sparks. They lostto Midland 2-1, before being eliminat-ed by the host Strike Zone.

No team has enjoyedsuccess at the Connie MackWorld Series like theMidland Redskins.

The team out ofCincinnati is back for a24th straight series and islooking for its 14th champi-onship.

This year s Midlandsquad, like many in pastyears, is loaded withDivision I recruits. Twentyare committed to or play-ing at the NCAAs top

    level.The Redskins return

three players off of a 2013team that had an earlier-than-normal exit, beingeliminated before the finalfour.

Midland manager JoeHayden said this year, theRedskins are a strongerteam, but he knows howdifficult it is to advance nomatter the talent his teamhas on the field.

I think were bringing abetter team out there,Hayden said. We have toplay it one game at a time.

The key with the fencesand wind out there is tokeep the ball on theground, play good defenseand take advantage ofevery situation. If youdont do that, you donthave a chance.

The team had little trou-ble advancing out of theEast Central Regional. TheRedskins shut out theKentucky Bluechiefs 5-0 inthe final and had a no-hit-ter from 6-foot-2-inchright-hander Zach Shannonin the tournament.

Hayden said if Midlandcan continue getting thosetypes of performances onthe mound, itll be a diffi-cult to team to knock out.

Weve been a prettygood offensive team and aheck of a team on defense. If the pitching holds up,well have a good chance,Hayden said.

Midland opens the serieswith the host Strike Zone, following the opening cere-monies on Friday in whichtwo Redskins legends Ken Griffey Jr. and BarryLarkin will be inductedin the CMWS Hall of Fame.

Its great for the boys togo out there and play at thevery same park as KennyGriffey and Barry Larkin,Hayden said. You canthave put two better peoplein the Hall of Fame.

Hayden said eventhough he wont be makingthe trip to Farmington, heknows his team will beready for the tournamentand will enjoy the experi-ence.

We love the place, theatmosphere and the won-derful things they do forthe team and our boys, hesaid.

D-BAT has been a Connie World Seriesregular since 2006, and, for the secondtime, in three seasons, the organizationwill have a pair of squads in the tourna-ment.

Pat Leachs D-BAT team will make itssecond straight appearance in the series.

Leachs team was the first to qualify forthe CMWS this year after winning theNational Qualifier at Surprise, Ariz., inJune.

D-BAT Leach lost in pool play and thendropped its opening game in the qualify-ing bracket to the Trombley Nighthawksbefore responding with five consecutivevictories, including two over theNighthawks to win the tournament andearn a CMWS bid.

The D-BAT team returns two playersfrom last years CMWS roster: GrantSchneider and Jacob Patterson. Pattersonwas named the pitcher of the tournamentat the National Qualifier this summer.

Were not as flashy this year. Weregoing to play a hard-nosed, good-paced

baseball game, Leach said.Leach thinks last years experience will

have him more prepared for the series, buthe knows it will come down to playinggood baseball during that week. On thatend, there is only so much the teams cando to prepare.

We talk about it, and you just neverknow what youre going to get. I just hopewe play good baseball, he said.Everybody there has earned the right tobe there, and thats what makes it so spe-cial.

The summer was geared toward quali-fying for the CMWS, so after earning aspot a month early, Leach is hopeful therust hasnt set in with his squad.

You totally have to adjust the sched-ule, Leach said. You want to play ascompetitive a schedule as possible.

D-BAT Leach will also be joined in thetournament by D-BAT Gallegos. In 2012,the organization qualified its D-BAT Dowand D-BAT Carpenter teams.

Leachs team will open its series withthe North Atlantic Regional winner at 5:15p.m. on Saturday.

For the second time in three years,Carolina is back at the Connie Mack WorldSeries to represent Puerto Rico.

In 2012, Carolina head coach MarlonColon brought the Carolina Gigantes toFarmington. The team lost both games, including a walkoff defeat againstMidland.

Colon used those losses as a learning

experience for his revamped Vaqueros squadthis season with the hopes of winning PuertoRicos first CMWS title since 1994.

This is a much better team in terms ofpitching and defense, Colon said throughhis translator. We know from 2012 that

we needed to focus on that because of thetype of park Ricketts is.

The Vaqueros earned the bid this sea-son after a 5-1 win against EscuelaDeportes Carolina to cap off a soggyPuerto Rico regional that saw multiplerain delays.

None of the players on this Carolinateam made the trip in 2012, but startingcatcher Angel Lopez said his team is look-ing forward to the trip and the experienceof playing in the series.

Were pretty excited, and it took a lotof work every day to make it, said Lopez, who goes to school in Philadelphia. Wewere motivated to play hard. Youre goingto see a lot of hustle. We have good pitch-ers and play seven hard innings.

Colons experience in 2012 will be ahelp to the young Puerto Rico squad as heprepares the team for the tournament.

Last time, the kids were a little nerv-ous, Colon said. We just need to playbaseball and have fun at it.

Colons confidence has rubbed off onhis team, and Lopez said this time,Carolina will be ready.

He told us it will be hard, but if we didit here then we can do it there, Lopezsaid. Well do our best, and Im confidentin our team.

Carolina will face Frozen Ropes in theopening game of the CMWS at 5:15 p.m.on Friday.

    By Joshua [email protected]

The South Troy Dodgers are mak-ing back-to-back Connie MackWorld Series appearances for thefirst time.

The Dodgers have been the mostconsistent North Atlantic Regionteam since 2000, qualifying for thetournament seven times. But headcoach Kevin Rogers said a lot of hisplayers came into this summer readyto make a return trip to Farmington.

I think the six returning kidskept pushing our team and tellingthe others just how hard it was to getthere, Rogers said.

South Troys six returning playersare the most of any squad in thetournament.

Theyll be looking for redemptionthis year after the Dodgers wereeliminated quickly last year withlosses in their first two games.

Wed like to get down there andplay well, Rogers said. We knowthe competition will be tough, butwere hoping the ball bounces ourway.

Pitching has been South Troysstrength this summer. The Dodgersthrew four straight shutouts in theregional, winning two games 1-0and a third 2-0.

The only runs allowed by theDodgers came during the firstinning of the final against Ontario.South Troy gave up two runs in thetop of the first, before two straightdays of rain washed out the champi-onship.

South Troy was declared the win-ner since it was the only undefeatedteam in the tournament and hadbeaten Ontario 1-0 a couple daysearlier.

Weve been in a lot of closegames. At times, weve struggledwith the bats, Rogers said. Itsbeen a grind most of the summer. Were a hard-working crew.

South Troy will play D-BAT Leachin its opener at 5:15 p.m. Saturday.

Rogers hasnt seen this particularD-BAT team, but he knows theorganization well and has seen itsteams for years at the AmericanQualifier his team hosts.

D-BAT is a great organization. We know what were up against.Every team is great, and were look-ing forward to it, he said.
