History
Madison County was organized in 1846 and is named
after James Madison, the fourth President of the United
States. Its picturesque terrain features an abundance of
rivers and creeks. Originally boasting 19 covered bridges, six covered
bridges remain today, five are listed on the National Register of His-
toric Places.
Birthplace of John WayneBorn Marion Robert Morrison
in 1907, John Wayne began life
in a modest home in Winterset.
The home has been restored to its
1907 appearance with authentic
furnishings and features memo-
rabilia such as the eyepatch worn
in True Grit. Guided tours are
available from 10 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. daily except Thanksgiving,
Christmas and New Year’s day.
The official website was
recently expanded, and a wide
selection of John Wayne-related items is now available for purchase
at the site. Sales of products help support the John Wayne Birthplace
Society, a non-profit group that exists to preserve and expand the
Birthplace of Winterset’s most famous resident.
Madison County CourthouseThe present courthouse is actu-
ally the second structure on this
site. The original courthouse on
this site burned down in 1875.
The second, identical structure
was built in 1876 and is made of
native limestone. The interior
woodwork and twin staircases
are made from locally milled oak
and walnut. Writings and draw-
ings from incarcerated persons
from the early 1900s can still be
seen on the third floor court-
house wall. The Madison County Courthouse is listed on the Nation-
al Register of Historic Places.
North River Stone SchoolhouseBuilt in 1874 of native limestone, the school was in continuous use
until 1945. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Winterset Art CenterLocated one block west of the Birthplace of John Wayne, the Art
Center features paintings, prints, posters and other artwork by local
artists, as well as a display honoring George Washington Carver. The
1854-era home was once used as a stop on the Underground Rail-
road. Legend has it, the 1854 era home was once used as a stop on the
Underground Railroad.
Kaser-Bevington House and Historical ComplexPerched on 18.5 acres on Winterset’s south side, the Complex
includes a log school and post office, an 1871 train depot, Zion
church, 1856 stone barn, a three-hole stone privy (with wallpaper and
walnut trim) and other historical buildings. The restored 1856 brick
Victorian mansion sits prominently at the top of the hill. The Muse-
um displays thousands of historical artifacts, rocks, fossils, equip-
ment, clothing and more dating from the Civil War to present time.
Clark TowerSituated in Winterset City Park
(along with the Cutler-Donahoe
Bridge), Clark Tower was erected in
1926 as a memorial to the county’s
first pioneer family by its descen-
dants. Constructed of native lime-
stone, it stands 25 feet high and
offers a commanding view of the
Middle River valley below.
The Delicious AppleJesse Hiatt was a farmer who discovered an unusual seedling in his
apple orchard in 1872. He carefully nurtured the tree and found
its first fruit to be of a remarkable flavor. Originally named Hiatt’s
“Hawkeye,” the apple was entered in the Missouri State Fair in 1893.
Upon biting into the apple, one judge proclaimed it “delicious” and
that name stuck. A descendant of the original Delicious apple tree
still stands just north of Peru, and residents celebrate each year with
an Apple Days festival.

The Covered Bridge FestivalThe Festival has been a
time-honored tradition
for more than 40 years.
Each year on the second
full weekend in October,
county residents gather
under the brilliant hues of
autumn to celebrate their
historic covered bridges.
The festival features
old-time craft demonstra-
tions by local artisans, a
wide variety of food, music
and entertainment galore,
an antique vehicle parade,
tours of the bridges and
more.
George Leslie Stout: Monuments ManWhen George Clooney’s “The Monuments Men” hit the big screen
in early 2014, Winterset was delighted to recognize a local star from
our own history books. Clooney’s character, Frank Stokes, was based
on Winterset’s own George Stout. When Stout went back into active
duty during WWII as a Lieutenant Commander with the Navy
Reserves, he was 45 years old and had already served in WWI. In
fact, he was a married man with two sons, and his older son Robert
also joined the military to serve our country during WWII. Stout was
a world-class expert in the science of art preservation and restora-
tion. And that was just the expertise needed for reclaiming the tens
of thousands of pieces of artwork that had been stolen by the Nazis
from across Europe. For the whole story, read the book “The Mon-
uments Men: Allied heroes, Nazi thieves and the greatest treasure
hunt in history,” by Robert M. Edsel.
George Stout was born in Winterset in 1897. He was the oldest of
six brothers, the son of Lulu McBride and Abraham Lincoln Stout,
and the grandson of Margaret Ross and Micaijah Stout. George’s
parents and grandparents and younger brother Robert are all buried
in the Winterset Cemetery.
Getting Here and AroundMadison County lies just off two major Interstate highways, I-80
(east/west) and I-35 (north/south). From I-80, head south from exits
100 to 117. From I-35, head west from exits 52 to 65. It’s just 35 min-
utes from Des Moines to the county seat, Winterset, at the center of
the county. Stop off and spend some time visiting the many fascinat-
ing communities and friendly folks of Madison County. You’ll be
glad you did!
If you would like relocation packets sent to you, please
let us know, and we would be more than happy to assist you.

A family owned egg farm with operations in the rural heart-
land of America. The family association with eggs and farming dates back at least 125 years. Rose Acre Brand Eggs came about in the 1930’s, started in Indiana. Early on, eggs were sold at the Indianapolis Farmers Market with eggs produced in scenic southern Indiana. The family supplemented those eggs by purchasing surplus eggs from surrounding farmers. By 1955 Rose Acres began construction on the
at Rural Route 5, Seymour, Indiana. Business did very well with the extremely fresh eggs produced. Growing with additional egg farms Rose Acres has became known for quality & value and fresh-ness throughout the United States.

Madison County originally boasted 19 covered bridges, but
just six remain today, all of which are listed on the Nation-
al Register of Historic Places. The bridges were covered by
order of the County Board of Supervisors to help preserve the large
flooring timbers, which were more expensive to replace than the
lumber used to cover the bridge sides and roof. Usually, the bridges
were named for the resident who lived closest.
Roseman Covered BridgeBuilt in 1883 by Benton Jones,
it is 107 feet in length and sits
in its original location. Rose-
man was renovated in 1992 at
a cost of $152,515. In Robert
James Waller’s novel, “The
Bridges of Madison County,”
and the movie of the same name, Roseman is the bridge Robert Kin-
caid seeks when he stops at Francesca Johnson’s home for directions;
it is also where Francesca leaves her note inviting him to dinner.
Also known as the “haunted” bridge, Roseman is where two
sheriff’s posses trapped a county jail escapee in 1892. It is said the
man rose up straight through the roof of the bridge, uttering a wild
cry, and disappeared. He was never found, and it was decided that
anyone capable of such a feat must be innocent.
Holliwell Covered Bridge Built in 1880 by Benton
Jones, it is the longest covered
bridge, measuring 122 feet.
It remains in its original site
over the Middle River south-
east of Winterset. Holliwell
was renovated in 1995 at a
cost of $225,000. It is featured
in “The Bridges of Madison
County” movie.
Cedar Covered Bridge Built in 1883 by Benton Jones, Cedar Bridge was 76 feet long and
was the last bridge open to vehicles. It was built over Cedar Creek
north of Winterset on what is now U.S. Highway 169. It was moved
to its present location over the same creek in 1921. In Robert James
Waller’s novel, “The Bridges of Madison County,” Cedar Bridge is
where Francesca Johnson goes to meet Robert Kincaid to help him
take photographs. Cedar is also the bridge on the novel’s cover. The
bridge was renovated in 1998 at a cost of $128,073.
Cedar was destroyed
by an arsonist on Sept. 3,
2002. A replica of the origi-
nal bridge was built from the
original plans using authen-
tic materials and methods.
The new bridge was dedicat-
ed on Oct. 9, 2004. You can
find out more about the bridge at www.CedarCoveredBridge.com.
Cutler-Donahoe BridgeBuilt in 1870 by Eli Cox, the Cutler-Donahoe bridge is 79 feet in
length and features a pitched roof. Originally located over the North
River near Bevington, it was moved to its present site in Winterset’s
City Park in 1970. Cutler-Donahoe was renovated in 1997 at a cost
of $35,538.
Hogback Covered Bridge Built in 1884 by Benton Jones, the Hogback Covered Bridge mea-
sures 97 feet and is in its original location in a valley north of Winter-
set. Hogback gets its name from the limestone ridge which forms the
west end of the valley. It was renovated in 1992 at a cost of $118,810.
Imes Covered Bridge The oldest of the remaining covered bridges, Imes was built in 1870
and is 81 feet in length. It was originally located over the Middle
River west of Patterson. In 1887 it was moved to a spot over Clinton
Creek southwest of Hanley. Imes Bridge was moved again to its pres-
ent site over a natural ravine just east of St. Charles in 1977. It was
renovated in 1997 at a cost of $31,807.
The covered bridges are open to the public, and travelers can
use a detailed map to do a self-guided tour of the structures. A map is
available on www.madisoncounty.com or the map can be picked up
at the Chamber of Commerce/Welcome Center.
“The Bridges of Madison County” novel Robert James Waller was a guitar-picker, photographer, ex-business
school professor and author of the best-selling hardcover of all time.
In 1992 Warner Books published his first novel, “The Bridges of
Madison County.” The 171-page hardcover novel has been translat-
ed into 25 languages, and more than 12 million copies have been sold
worldwide! On the New York Times Best Seller list for three years
(and No. 1 for 38 weeks), it topped “Gone with the Wind” in 1995 as
the best-selling fiction book of all time (in hardcover, no less).
Waller says he writes about “ordinary people, the kind you meet
in a checkout line at the hardware store” and about those certain

moments in which “the ordinary can take on rather extraordinary
qualities.” In his spare, straightforward stories, men and women
struggle with love, hope, disappointment, responsibility — everyday
issues which touch us all — all rendered at once both profound and
intimate through prose of unaffected, moving simplicity.
The MovieRobert Kincaid (Clint Eastwood) has come to
Madison County, Iowa, in order to take pictures
of the Roseman and Holliwell covered bridges.
He is a professional photographer on assign-
ment to National Geographic magazine in the
fall of 1965 and he is lost. Pulling his green pick-
up into the driveway of a well kept farmhouse,
he stops to ask directions. Francesca Johnson
(Meryl Streep) is at home, alone, her husband
and two children having departed for four days to the Illinois state
fair. She has been married for 15 years, and the luxury of time to
herself is an unusual break from her daily life, as is the courteous
stranger approaching her for information.
These are the opening circumstances for an extraordinary story,
adapted to the screen by Richard LaGravenese from Robert James
Waller’s novel, “The Bridges of Madison County.” Directed by Clint
Eastwood, produced by Eastwood and Kathleen Kennedy, and asso-
ciate produced by Tom Rooker and Michael Maurer, it is the visual
representation of two people coming to terms with their own lives
through each other. The film is a narrative about love and choices
and consequence.
“The Bridges of Madison County” was made on location in Madi-
son County, Iowa. A reconstructed farm house provided the key set,
with additional sequences shot in the towns of Winterset and Adel,
along with the actual Roseman and Holliwell covered bridges. Loca-
tions were coordinated with the full cooperation of the Iowa Film
Commission, Winterset and Adel Chambers of Commerce, and the
Madison County Covered Bridge Preservation Society.
The MusicalIn February of 2014, this romantic and well-known story became
a Broadway Musical. Four-time Tony® nominee Kelly O’Hara (of
Broadway’s “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” “The Pajama Game,”
and “Light in the Piazza”) stars as Francesca Johnson and Steven
Pasquale (of TV’s “Rescue Me” and “Six Feet Under”) as Robert Kin-
caid, the production is currently showing at the Gerald Schoenfeld
Theater on West 45th St. in the Theater District of Manhattan in
New York City.
The stunning new musical features a beautiful score by Tony
Award®-winning composer Jason Robert Brown (“Parade,” “The
Last Five Years”) and is directed by two-time Tony® winner Bartlett
Sher (“South Pacific,” “The Light in the Piazza”).

Being adjacent to Des Moines brings world-class health care to
the residents of Madison County. Three major hospitals are
located in Des Moines, as well as one of the largest Medical
Colleges in the United States (Des Moines University), which can be
found a short drive away.
However, travel is not necessary, as quality health care is found
in Winterset and in the communities of Madison County. Madison
County Memorial Hospital was established in 1949 and is a Critical
Access Hospital offering Level IV Trauma Care, a new 40-Slice CAT
Scanner, Digital Mammography, general surgery and fully staffed
Lab, and Health Therapy departments. In December of 2011 they
opened a new 25 bed medical surgical wing including accommoda-
tions to meet the needs of bariatric, pediatric and hospice patients.
A new surgical suite and specialty clinic were opened in 2007. The
hospital operates under the Madison County Health Care System
which also includes The Earlham Clinic and Health Trust Physi-
cians Clinic of Winterset. Health Trust Physicians Clinic is attached
to Madison County Memorial Hospital and recently underwent a
total renovation for the five physicians and three mid-level provid-
ers. All providers practice family medicine with pediatrics and inter-
nal medicine also being specialties available in the clinic. Visiting
specialists come to Madison County Memorial Hospital and pro-
vide local access for residents in the fields of Audiology, Cardiology,
Dermatology, Ears, Nose and Throat, General Surgery, Neurology,
Orthopedics, Pain Management, Plastic Surgery, Podiatry, Vascular
Care, Women’s Health (Prenatal/GYN) and Wound Care. End of
life care and counseling is available through HCI Care Services.
Also a part of the Madison County medical community are Madi-
son County Medical Associates in Winterset and The Winterset
Medical Clinic. There are three Chiropractic Offices in Winterset as
well as one in St. Charles. Four Dental Clinics and an Optometry
Practice are also located in Winterset. There are four nursing homes
in the Winterset area. There are three pharmacies in Winterset as
well as pharmacies in St. Charles and Earlham.
Medical transportation is available through the Regional Trans-
portation system for non-emergency purposes such as doctor’s
appointments. Emergency transportation is provided 24/7 by
Madison County Ambulance; a county-owned and operated service
staffed by two crews of full time Paramedic Specialists. A number of
other Madison County communities have First Responder and EMT
services.
The promotion of healthy living is also big in Madison County as
a fully staffed and active parks and recreation program is found in
Winterset as well as volunteer-led efforts in Earlham and St. Charles.
An active Madison County Conservation Department also sched-
ules many varied activities throughout the year to share the beautiful
parks and resources found in Madison County. Efforts are underway
to establish a trail system in Earlham, Truro and Winterset for biking
and walking. A community skate park has been designed for Win-
terset. There is a well-known bicycle ride (BRAMCO) and numerous
5K walking and running events held annually in Madison County.

Parks & Recreation
The City of Winterset Parks and Recreation Department
(WPRD) manages 140 acres of wonderful parks and facili-
ties. The WPRD also provides a variety of recreation pro-
grams for every season. At the 75-acre City Park, you can take a
two-mile hike to the (Clark) tower, have a family reunion in one of
three shelter houses or see the many historical sites including Cut-
ler-Donahue Covered Bridge. Camping is another popular activity
at City Park. Camping units big and small from all over the United
States and other countries stay here. The best place to be on a hot
summer day is the Winterset Aquatic Center. This $3 million facility
with fun features for the whole family opened in 2006. Two lighted
tennis courts are located next to the aquatic center. Giffin Fields,
offering three youth softball/ baseball diamonds, is the home of
the Winterset Little League Program. The Martin Marietta Fields-
Softball Complex includes two adult-sized softball fields. Adjacent
to these softball fields is the new M.M. Soccer Complex and home
for the Winterset Area Soccer Club program. Two neighborhood
parks are Whistle Stop Park and Memory Lane Park. Carver Memo-
rial Park is a tribute to the memory and ideas of George Washington
Carver. Forty-some recreation programs involving all ages are coor-
dinated by the WPRD throughout the year. The WPRD has three
regular full-time employees and many seasonal staff. Visit winterset.

Schools
Welcome to Madison County. We are very proud of the
varied educational opportunities afforded to our stu-
dents within the Winterset Community School District.
Our students score above the state average on Iowa Assessments in
all areas reported to the state (Reading, Mathematics and Science).
We utilize the Iowa Core Curriculum and continually work to ensure
our teaching and learning opportunities are of high quality for all stu-
dents. We realize that in order to prepare our students for a lifetime of
personal success, our job is to be involved in continuous improvement
efforts. During our 2012 Iowa Department of Education Site Visit, we
received several commendations. Some examples include:
The district’s vision and mission to continually improve the
learning environment to empower all students to achieve per-
sonal excellence are embedded throughout professional practices
by teachers in the district.
Communication is frequent, well-received and informative to
stakeholders.
High school students have a variety of opportunities to be leaders
in the schools.
Collaborative relationships are prevalent throughout the district
and amongst families and stakeholders.
Student learning is supported by teachers in a variety of ways.
Husky Pride has a positive impact on student-to-student rela-
tionships as well as student-to-teacher relationships.
Technology is used often to enhance student learning.
Demographically we cover 283 square miles, educate more than
1,760 students and employee 243 people. Our buses drive approxi-
mately 950 miles per day, and we serve just less than 1,500 break-
fasts and lunches each school day. Approximately 61 percent of our
teaching staff have a bachelor’s degree, and 39 percent have a master’s
degree. Our teaching, support and administrative staff are top notch;
our facilities are student friendly; and the district is committed to pro-
viding an excellent education for our students. The staff is continu-
ally involved in professional development opportunities to improve
student achievement. We are very proud of our students, our staff and
the many educational programs and extra-curricular activities our
schools have to offer.
The Winterset Community School District has four separate atten-
dance centers:
Winterset Elementary School serves students preschool through
third grade. In addition to the basics of reading, writing, social stud-
ies, and math, our elementary also offers additional programs such as
Title I, English Language Learner support, Talented and Gifted, Phys-
ical Education, Art, Music and a Science Specialist. An after-school
program, which collaborates with community resources, is provided
for students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade.
Winterset Middle School serves fourth–sixth grade students.
Students learn from a team of teachers focused on the core (Math,
Reading/Language Arts, Social Studies and Science) in addition to
Title I, Math/Reading Tutors, English Language Learner support,
Talented and Gifted, Physical Education, Art, Music and Band. The
middle school staff have worked diligently to develop a comprehen-
sive response to intervention system to support all learners and have
engaged in professional development regarding active engagement
strategies to improve student learning.
Winterset Junior High serves seventh and eighth graders. A core
team of grade level teachers provide instruction for students in the
main subject areas. Junior high students also enjoy exploratory and
elective courses. The junior high staff have focused on strategies
to integrate technology, writing to learn strategies, as well as have
engaged in the rigorous review of student assessment data all with the
goal of providing teaching and learning opportunities which improve
student learning.
Winterset High School serves students ninth-12th. Our high
school provides a broad array of courses including the traditional
courses as well as advanced placement and Project Lead the Way.
The Technology Center is home to a large industrial technology lab, a
computer aided drafting lab, a photographic darkroom, a lab for indi-
vidual technology learning modules, a greenhouse, and WHS-TV a
local student-operated cable TV channel. Winterset High School also
offers an alternative high school setting called Bridges High School.
Both the Junior High and High School participate in a “One-to-One
Computer” initiative. Each child is provided a laptop computer, which
is taken home and used for educational purposes.
In 2010, the Madison County Career Academy (MCCA) was devel-

oped. This collaborative project involves several area school districts:
Van Meter, Earlham, Interstate 35, Nodaway Valley and Martensdale-
St. Marys. MCCA focuses on career and technical development and
includes programs in Construction Trades, Health Occupations, Elec-
trical, Engineering, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood and Technology.
Lastly, Winterset Community Schools enjoy strong community
support. In 2008 a bond issue was passed to build a new middle school.
Additionally, recent improvements have been made to the elemen-
tary and high school. During athletic and activity events the stands are
packed and parents and community members are present to support
and cheer on the Huskys. On behalf of the Winterset School Commu-
nity, I invite you to visit our buildings and experience the excitement
and spirit evident within our top-notched school district!

Interstate 35 School District
Welcome to Interstate 35 Schools — home of the Road-
runners! This 2011-12 school year commemorates our
50th year as a consolidated school district which proud-
ly educates just less than 900 students, spans 192 square miles in sec-
tions of three counties (Clarke, Madison and Warren) and serves
the rural communities of St. Charles, Truro and New Virginia. We
are located about 25 miles south of Des Moines in one of the closest
places to the Metro many people aren’t aware even exists.
Our entire PK-12 campus is located in Truro and consists of a
1981 high school with one of the premier gymnasiums in the area
and an attached elementary/middle school built in 2002. The dis-
trict’s all-in-one-location affords us many opportunities to function
as the community hub. Whether it’s a football, volleyball, basketball,
baseball, softball game or track meet, the annual Rich Gray Wres-
tling Classic, a fine arts concert, dance team performance or the
junior class’ After Prom Carnival, one can be assured the parking
lot will be full many evenings and weekends. We are fortunate to

Located in the northwest corner of Madison
County and southwest corner of Dallas
County, the Earlham Community School
District serves 625 students PK-12. The school
is the hub of Earlham, a town with a population
of 1,450 residents. The community of Earlham
has been extremely supportive of the school, has
remained independent and has not reorganized or consolidated with
neighboring districts.
The Earlham Community School District is committed to stu-
dent success, and our vision states that “the ultimate purpose of
education is to challenge all students to their highest level of achieve-
ment in order to become life-long learners.” In an effort to fulfill
this vision, the district has provided a variety of technology tools
for students and staff. Each student in grades seven-12 has a laptop
computer with 24/7 access. The students and staff continue to grow
and develop innovative and creative ways to teach and learn. Stu-
dents in the elementary have access to iPads and are using them on
a daily basis to enhance reading and math skills. All classrooms in
the District have interactive SMARTBoards for students and staff to
enhance instruction and demonstrate learning. The Earlham Com-
munity School District is also committed to implementing the Iowa
Core and professional development provided by the district over the
last year has focused on how to use technology tools to implement
the Iowa Core and increase student achievement.
Graduates from the Earlham Community Schools are well pre-
pared for life after high school. This preparation comes either
through the traditional school process and/or from the opportunity
to participate in the Madison County Career Academy. Students
who are working toward attending a college or university contin-
ue to score above the state average on the ACT test and have been
accepted into the post-secondary institution of their choice without
difficulty. All students who graduate from Earlham are required
to take four years of English and three years of science, mathemat-
ics and social studies courses. Students who elect to participate in
the MCCA have the opportunity to learn specific skills in building
have an actively involved
community and respectful
student body that appreci-
ate and support a small-
school atmosphere.
As much as we trea-
sure our strong tradition
and consistently high
graduation rates, we are
diligently working to
prepare our students for
21st Century learning and the ever-changing world. This focus has
resulted in a huge increase in the amount of technological resources
available to students and staff and an always-expanding digital pres-
ence for the district with our webpage (www.i-35.k12.ia.us), Twitter
feed and many staff blogs. We start this important preparation early
by housing within the elementary the Little Roadrunner Preschool,
which has earned the National Association for the Education of
Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation for its programming and
services. It is open Tuesday through Friday during the school year
and provides a stimulating early learning environment for area 3- to
5-year-olds.
Our three district priorities are to: 1) articulate and support a
cohesive student-centered PK-12 vision for continuous school
improvement; 2) engage in effective teaching and relevant learning
for the 21st Century; and 3) operate with fiscal integrity, efficiency
and effectiveness. We couldn’t accomplish any of these without the
passion and dedication of our caring faculty and staff. We enjoy
showcasing our school to others and would be thrilled to have you
visit. On behalf of the Board of Education and all our employees,
thanks for taking the time to learn more about I-35 Schools.

trades, culinary arts, engineering and
a variety of other areas. These students
can earn certifications by completing
the coursework and also earn college
credit through DMACC. Although
these programs have only been in place
for the last two years, they have proven
to be very successful.
Earlham students also have the opportunity to participate in a
wide range of extracurricular activities to participate in. The district
offers a full range of sports, music, club, and speech and drama activ-
ities for students. In addition, the district has an FFA program that
has a greenhouse and 30 acres for students to have hands-on learn-
ing experiences.
The Earlham community has shown their support for learning
over the years evidenced by their passage of every bond issue on the
first attempt throughout the years. The most recently completed
project in the 2003-04 school year provided the district with multiple
new elementary classrooms, a 600-seat auditorium, a practice gym
and new instrumental and vocal music rooms. The 2003-04 addi-
tion has allowed the district to keep class sizes relatively small as no
section of an elementary grade has more than 23 students and the
average size is 18 students per section. In addition, the District has
completed recent renovations to the high school science rooms to
provide an optimum learning environment for students. The Dis-
trict completed a renovation of the football field and track area so as
to provide an eight-lane, all-weather track, turf field, new bleachers
and other facilities associated with the site. The most recent plans are
for the District to add elementary classrooms and expand the cur-
rent practice gym into a new 1,000-seat competition gym. Despite
the enhancements in the school facilities, the district has reduced the
property tax rate to $15.66/$1,000 for 2012-13.
The Earlham Community School District is a great place to live if
you want to combine a small school atmosphere with a wide range of
educational and extracurricular opportunities for your children with
easy access to all that Des Moines can offer.

Economic Development
On behalf of the Madison County Development
Group, welcome to our county and the cities
of Winterset, Earlham, St. Charles, Truro, East
Peru, Bevington, Patterson and Macksburg. You will find
our scenery among the most beautiful in Iowa and that
history is very important to our citizens.
A growing countyMadison County has been among the fastest growing
counties in Iowa and is perched to become one of the
fastest growing counties in the United States. West Des
Moines is expanding into our county and anticipates
that eventually 50,000 people will live in their city in the
northeastern most part of our county. With that will
come a number of new businesses and industries. It is
also anticipated that many of the cities in our county will
grow by 40 percent or more in the next 20 to 30 years. In
anticipation of that, groups are meeting now to plan for
that growth so we can maintain the small town feeling
and values that are so important to our residents.
A great locationMadison County is conveniently located just off the two
major Interstate highways in Iowa, I-80 (east/west) and
I-35 (north/south). The county seat of Winterset is just
30 minutes from Des Moines, state capital of Iowa. It is
easily accessible by both U.S. Highway 169 and Highway
92, which criss-cross the county. It is also 30 minutes
from the Des Moines International Airport. Plans are
currently being made to add another runway to the Win-
terset Municipal airport. This is expected to make it the
regional airport for the southwest side of the Des Moines
metro area.
A great place to do businessThe Madison County Development Group offers many
programs, resources, and development tools to help your

new or existing business grow and prosper. Madison
County has a highly capable and growing labor force that
is supported by both Des Moines Area Community Col-
lege and Southwestern Community College. Because of
this, it boasts a strong business base that is well-diversi-
fied in manufacturing, agri-business, service and retail.
A great place to liveMadison County offers an incredible quality of life for its
citizens. It boasts three excellent school systems, health
care featuring the award winning Madison County Hos-
pital, numerous city and county parks, a nine-hole golf
course and close proximity to the metro area. In Madison
County, you can safely walk the streets, children can ride
their bikes throughout the towns and neighbors really do
care about each other.
A tourist destinationBecause history is important, you will find many places
to visit. Of course, we are famous for our covered bridges
and for being the birthplace of John Wayne. Addition-
ally,
We are the birthplace of the Delicious apple.
We have a monument dedicated to George Washing-
ton Carver, who was rescued from death by a Madi-
son County resident and who made his home here
for a while.
We have the oldest Civil War monument in Iowa.
We have the longest continually-operating weekly
newspaper this side of the Mississippi.
We have a wonderful museum with exhibits coveted
by such groups as the Smithsonian Institution.
We have the most historically intact downtown of
any city in Iowa.
We have a part of the Underground Railroad at the
Art Center in Winterset. There you can see a hidden
room where runaway slaves stayed.
A place where you can have it allWhether you are just driving through Madison County
or moving here, you can relax and enjoy the best of all
worlds: safe, secure small-town neighborhoods and rural
living or access to the largest metro area in Iowa that
features such things as the State Capitol, Jordan Creek
Mall, the Civic Center, the Science Center or Wells Fargo
Arena.

Family owned since 1960
When you buy from a mom and pop business, you are not helping a CEO buy a third vacation home. You are helping a little girl get dance lessons, a little boy get his team jersey,
a mom or dad put food on the table, a family pay a mortgage, or a student pay for college. Our customers are our shareholders and they are the ones we strive to make happy.
Thank you for supporting small businesses!
