Welcome to the 54th annual International Carillon Festival! The Springfield Park District, Rees Carillon Society and the Carillon Belles are proud to present this annual event to the Springfield Community and guests from around the world. This year’s festival continues the tradition of presenting outstanding concerts by the world’s top Carillonneurs.

We are very happy to welcome back Frits Reynaert (Netherlands) and Carlo van Ulft (USA) who were last heard on the Rees Tower in 1997 and 2012 respectively. Frits will be appearing in his 4th festival and Carlo his 6th! Welcome back, gentlemen! All are excited to welcome Andrée- Anne Doane (Quebec), Joey Brink (USA) and Jon Lehrer (British Columbia) to their festival debuts. It is truly an exceptional group of musicians appearing this year. Thank you all for sharing your talents!

This year’s student performers include Patrick Knox (USA) and Angela Paul-Pryer (USA) who both started carillon studies here in Springfield, IL. Patrick has worked with the North American Carillon School while both students have studied privately under Robin Austin. This year’s students will be performing a Concerto for Two on Friday just before our firework spectacular!

Earlier this year, the Rees Carillon Society and Verdin Bell & Clock refurbished and reactivated the Westminster Chime which now tolls the hour from 9am to 9pm daily. A special thanks to those at the Verdin Company for their tireless work on this project and to the Rees Carillon Society for their generous donation!

Our Wednesday evening concerts are dedicated to “Lincoln and the Music He Loved”. The mid-week concert will feature tunes familiar to the Lincoln’s such as Stephen Foster songs, patriotic melodies as well as well-known classical music from the period. We invite all to come visit the Lincoln sites and enjoy these wonderful concerts!

We are pleased with the combined efforts of so many to organize and bring you this year’s 54th International Carillon Festival. Thanks to the support of all of our Trustees, the Carillon Society Members, Carillon Belles and Park District Staff for their tireless efforts to preserve the rich history that Thomas Rees bestowed upon us so many years ago.

Sincerely,

Leslie SgroSpringfield Park Board President

5. Theme from ‘Love Story’ (“Where Do I Begin…”) is a popular song published in 1970, with music by Francis Lai and lyrics by Carl Sigman. The song was rst introduced as an instrumental theme in the 1970 lm Love Story. The lyrics were added after the theme music became popular.

The song also served as the theme of the 1973-1974 NBC romantic anthology television series Love Story. The song has been covered many times.

The ‘Man with the Harmonica’ was composed by Ennio Morricone for Once Upon a Time in the West, the 1968 western lm of the same name directed by Sergio Leone. The lm score sold about 10 million copies worldwide. It was Leone’s desire to have the music available and played during lming. Leone had Morricone compose the score before shooting started and would play the music in the background for the actors on set.

6. Francisco Tárrega - who died in 1909 - is generally considered the founder of modern guitar technique.

Joaquin Turina (1882-1949) , composed his Homenaje a Tárrega (Tribute to Tárrega), con-sisting of two short, tricky, thoroughly idiomatic amenco pieces for solo guitar.

The rst piece is a garrotín in 2/4 time, with an opening full of large gestures that soon yields to music which is less public but no less demanding. It trails o ambiguously at the end, nally settling dreamily into the major mode, which until then has gone unused.

The second amenco is a Soleares in 3/4 time, quicker and more demanding than its pre-decessor, as Turina basically presents a series of variations on the contrasting quick runs and forceful strums characteristic of the amenco style.

FRITS REYNAERT (CONT.)SUNDAY, JUNE 7 • 7:00 P.M.

The dances were (mostly) performed by amateurs (courtiers and members of the no-bility) and not by professional dancers. The dances contained much symbolism (in the geometric gures and allegories).

2. Sjef van Balkom (1922-2004) studied carillon with his father, Toon van Balkom, the city-carillonneur of Den Bosch. In 1955 Sjef van Balkom succeeded his father as city-carillon-eur of Den Bosch and in 1988 he was succeeded by his son Joost.

His “Sonatine II” might well be the most played composition of Sjef van Balkom. This work owes its existence to the RBC composition competition in 1956, in which the third prize was issued by the jury and rst by the public.

3. The Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo (1901-1999), nearly blind since age three, was a pianist. He did not play the guitar, yet he still managed to capture and project the role of the guitar in Spanish music.

The “Concierto de Aranjuez” is the rst composition he wrote for the unusual combina-tion of classical guitar and orchestra. Written in 1939, it is by far Rodrigo’s best-known work, and its success established his reputation as one of the most signicant Spanish composers of the twentieth century.

This work was composed in the worst time of Rodrigo’s life. His wife and he had just lost their rst child and His wife Victoria barely survived childbirth.

The melody depicts all kinds of feelings going through Rodrigo: love for their baby, his love for his wife, his plea to God to at least let her live.

Rodrigo dedicated his “Concierto de Aranjuez” to Regino Sainz de la Maza, a talented Spanish classical guitarist and composer.

4. “Cantio Matutina” means Morning Song. This piece is written in 2002 to compete in a composition contest in the Dutch VOC-town Hoorn. On the occasion of 400 years VOC (= Dutch East India Company), composers were challenged to write a carillon compositions with a VOC-related theme. He chose the melody of ‘Aurora brengt de klare dag’ (‘Aurora brings the serene day’) as a starting point for this composition. It’s a lamentation (± 1700) of a young man who said farewell to his love and went to the East Indies.

The tranquil meditative movement is alternated with phrases from the song.

Radek Rejšek won a 3rd price with this composition. The composer Radek Rejšek (*1959) studied composition and trumpet, a.o. at the Prague Conservatory.

In 1989 he started his activities as carillon player at Prague Loreto (since 1994 with a full-rights title).

Bach composed six sonatas for solo violin in 1720. This rst sonata has four movements: Adagio, Fuga, Siciliana, and Presto, of which the rst two movements will be played.

Barber’s “Adagio For Strings”, from the second movement of his “String Quartet, Op. 11” written in 1936, is arguably his most well-known work and was voted by the BBC Today show as the “saddest classical” work ever.

“Celebration” is the rst movement Courter’s 4th Suite for carillon, one of Courter’s nal works for carillon. “Nocturne” is Brink’s second work for carillon, written as a gift to his rst carillon teacher, Ellen Dickinson at Yale University.

Written and sung by Paul McCartney, “Let It Be” was The Beatles’ nal song before McCartney’s departure from the band.

JOEY BRINKSATURDAY, JUNE 6 • 7:45 P.M.

D’hollander’s “Fantasy” is the rst movement from “The Dom Bells Triptych”, composed in 2014 for the Dom Tower in Utrecht, The Netherlands to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Dom Tower’s Hemony bells.

Loeillet was a Belgian composer from Ghent, composing 48 sonatas for recorder and con-tinuo over the course of his life. This is the seventh of this 48 works.

Gomez, a Professor of Music at San Antonio Community College, Texas, has become in-ternationally recognized for her Latino and Native American inuenced compositions.

Brink’s “Starlight” is one of a series of pieces commissioned by Yale University, evoking a melancholic and yearning feeling. White is a Professor of Music and Head of Composition at Iowa State University. He has written numerous works for carillon.

Cohen’s “Hallelujah” is a popular tune that received increased attention after its appear-ance in the lm “Shrek”.

FRITS REYNAERTSUNDAY, JUNE 7 • 7:00 P.M.

1. Fabritio Caroso (Sermoneta, Italy, 1526/1535 – 1605/1620) was an Italian  Renais-sance dancing master and a composer or transcriber of dance music. By his late twen-ties,  Caroso  had become a master of dance and was in the service of the Duchess of Sermoneta. Caroso died after 1605, possibly in Rome.

His dance manual ‘Nobiltà di Dame’ was printed in 1600 and again - after his death - in 1630. It has been published in English as ‘Courtly Dance of the Renaissance’ by Julia Sut-ton. Many of the dances also contain dedications to noble women of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.

ANDRÉE-ANNE DOANEWEDNESDAY, JUNE 3 • 7:45 P.M.

Émilien Allard was carillonneur at the Saint Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal (Quebec, Canada)from 1956 to 1975, and Dominion Carillonneur at the Peace Tower in the Houses of Parliament in Ottawa (Ontario, Canada) from 1975 until his death in 1976.

2015 marks the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Since Allard was gifted, both as a carillon composer and imaginative arranger of traditional Quebec folksongs, this program presents these two forms of writing for carillon in alternation.

The place and date of each composition appears after each title when known.

FRITS REYNAERTTHURSDAY, JUNE 4 • 7:45 P.M.

1. Henry Groen (*1957) has composed and arranged music for carillon and was carillonneur of several Dutch cities.

“Daar was een sneeuwwit vogeltje” ( “There was a snow-white bird”) is an old Dutch love song, known over all the Netherlands, usually a nightingale acting as messenger. The origin of this song is uncertain.

In his ‘Small Fantasy’ on this old song Henry Groen uses minimal music (a prolonged repetition of series of notes) to create a surprising modern atmosphere.

2. Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828) was an Austrian composer. He died young at 31, but was extremely prolic during his lifetime. His output consists of over six hundred secular vocal works - mainly ‘Lieder’ (songs), seven complete symphonies, sacred music, opera’s, incidental music  and a large body of chamber and piano music. During his lifetime, appreciation of his music was limited to a relatively small circle of admirers in Vienna, but interest in his work increased signicantly in the decades following his death. Many 19th-century composers (f.e. Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Liszt) discovered and championed his works. Today, Schubert is ranked among the greatest composers of the late Classical era and early Romantic era and is one of the most frequently performed composers of the early nineteenth century.

Rosamunde, Fürstin von Zypern  (Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus) is a play, which is primarily remembered for the incidental music which Franz Schubert composed for it. Music and play premiered in Vienna’s ‘Theater an der Wien’ on 20 December 1823.

“Auf dem Wasser zu singen” is a song composed by Franz Schubert in 1823 and based on the poem of the same name by Friedrich Leopold zu Stolberg-Stolberg. The text describes a scene on the water from the perspective of the narrator who is in a boat, and delves into the narrator’s reections on the passing of time.

3. Mathieu Dijker (*1927) is a Dutch composer, organist and carillonneur. He has composed works for organ and carillon, but also masses and other vocal works. His Suite “Campanae in Campina” was composed in 1978, commissioned by the city of Eindhoven. The Latin title stands for: “Bells in the Kempen”, the region around Eindhoven, in the south of the Netherlands where the composer is still living. It sketches life in and around the city in a telling characterization. It’s a vivacious, richly contrasted work that radiates the typical atmosphere of Dutch carillon music, though listeners can perceive elements of a modern composition as well.

4. Schindler’s List is the original soundtrack of the 1993 lm Schindler’s List. The original score and songs were composed by John Williams, and features violin player Itzhak Perlman. The album won the Academy Award and the BAFTA Award for “Best Original Score” and the Grammy Award for “Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media”. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award. Theme from Schindler’s List is one of the most recognized contemporary lm scores, particularly the violin solo.

5. Isaac Manuel Francisco Albéniz (1860 - 1909) was a prominent Spanish composer. The Prelude is also known under the titles Asturias (Leyenda). Many have attributed the rst transcription for guitar to  Francisco Tárrega  who put it in its most recognizable key,  E minor; it was subsequently made popular by Andrés Segovia. The theme, or versions of it, is often used in lm music and popular music.

The piece is described as “pure Andalusian amenco” with the theme itself suggesting the rhythm of the bulería - a song from the amenco repertoire.

The ‘marcato’/’staccato’markings suggest both guitar sounds and the footwork of a amenco dancer.

6. Sjef van Balkom (1922-2004) was the former city carillonneur of ‘s-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch) in the Netherlands from 1955-1987. He wrote innovative carillon literature in the typical northern Dutch style that emerged after World War 2. He has written about thirty works for carillon.

“Heer Jezus heeft een hofken” is the Dutch version of the well-known melody “King Jesus Hath a Garden.” Van Balkom composed a range of variations on this famous anthem. The introduction was set up quite modern, using motifs from this song. The variations are more classic in design, but with modernistic elements.

The Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon is the gift of Senator Thomas Rees, publisher of Illinois State Register from 1881 until his death in 1933. During World War I, Rees served on the International Board of Arbitration for newspapers and later for unions, providing him the opportunity to travel throughout Europe. Rees attributed his great interest in bells to visiting carillons in Belgium and the Netherlands—although his initial interest was the result of articles he had read in National Geographic, the Musical Quarterly, and Art and Archeology by William Gorham Rice.

Rees provided a $200,000 bequest to build the Carillon and left very specific instructions in his will regarding the number of bells and its location. Robert Stuart, President of the Springfield Park District (1959 – 1975), carefully implemented the Senator’s vision by consulting and hiring the architects, designers and bell foundry when the Carillon was constructed. While the Rees Carillon is one of the world’s largest carillons, more importantly, the quality of the bells coupled with the tower’s location in Washington Park distinguish the Rees Carillon as one of the world’s finest instruments.

The Rees Carillon boasts 67 cast bronze bells covering a range of 5 1/2 chromatic octaves. The total weight of the bells is 82,753 pounds; the largest (bourdon) bell, a G-flat, weighs 7 1/2 tons, while the smallest weighs 22 pounds. The carillon was cast by the 300-year-old bellfoundry of Petit & Fritsen, Ltd., in Aarle-Rixtel, The Netherlands. All of the bells are played manually from a keyboard located in the carillonneur’s cabin.

It is my intention that said carillon be erected to educate the public to the beauty, harmony and other benefits of bell music and to teach the art of playing.

Since Allard was gifted, both as a carillon composer and imaginative arranger of traditional Quebec folksongs, this program presents these two forms of writing for carillon in alternation.
