Dear Friends,

It’s been another exciting year at Kids In The Middle. We have been in our new home for over two years, and we continue to see tremendous client growth in our central Maplewood location. In 2014, we helped over 3500 chil-dren and families “in the middle” of divorce.

In January 2014, we implemented a new, three-year strategic plan. The plan was developed through a rigorous process that incorporated input from staff, board members, clients, and community stakeholders. This process re-sulted in a new plan with five key focus areas; financial stability, agency programs, agency staff, board and volun-teer development and client growth.

After a thorough assessment, the Agency made the decision to combine its previously separate Agency Based Counseling therapists and its School Outreach Counseling therapists into one Clinical Therapy Team. Our thera-pists are now all trained to work in both the Agency and School programs, allowing for a larger, experienced staff of therapists with the ability to provide even more direct service to clients in need.

December was a big month for change at the Agency. Chief Executive Officer Judy Berkowitz informed the Board of Directors that she would be announcing her retirement after ten years of dedicated service to the Agency. The transition of leadership began as I was appointed Interim Chief Executive Officer. As the board continued to pro-cess through the new strategic plan and who would be most qualified to lead KITM into the future, I was pleased that they saw my personal experience with divorce, both as a child of divorce and a parent of children of divorce, combined with my years of experience as a development professional and knowledge of the Agency, made me a strong fit for the position of Chief Executive Officer. I am humbled and excited to now serve Kids In The Middle in this capacity.

In 2014, we positioned Kids In The Middle to be stronger than ever for 2015 and beyond. Our vision to reach the needs of each child, parent, and grandparent that have been impacted by divorce is clear. We believe that at such a time in our history, when the rate of divorce is now over 50%, the mission and service of KITM will continue to make a profound difference in the lives of many in need of specialized, professional guidance and support in order to thrive through a very difficult life crisis.

On behalf of the Kids In The Middle staff, Board of Directors and families, we thank the community for 38 years of support. We could not accomplish this important work without you, and we are grateful for you.

With gratitude,

Meredith FriedmanChief Executive Officer

“Kids In The Middle helps because I can tell them private things, and I don’t have to worry about them telling my parents about the problems I’m having with them.”-Allison, age 11

“I really liked talking with the other kids in Group at Kids In The Middle... because I knew the other kids were going through the same thing as me... it made me feel not so alone, and it made me feel normal.”-Ashley, age 10

“Kids In The Middle is the best because it helps when you are sad about divorce, so you talk about your feelings and feel better.”-Mikey, age 7

“I found out that kids have to deal with a lot of little things that I never imagined. There’s not always an easy solution, but now I am more aware of things that could be an issue.”-Jane, KITM parent

“Kids In The Middle helped me learn that it is okay to love my mommy and my daddy the same.”-Joey, age 6 “That’s what really helped me the most...

just being able to talk to someone else, and I knew they wouldn’t tell anybody what I said, and they wouldn’t judge me.”-Olivia, age 12

AND

“KITM was the place where my son had the security to begin exploring the complex emotions any child faces while his family is changing shape. It’s where he learned how to name those emotions, sort them and choose how to behave in the face of them.”-Beth, KITM parent
