2014 ANNUAL REPORT

Jewish Family Services of Delaware’smission is to strengthen individuals, families and the community by providingcounseling and support services, based on Jewish values.

Dear Friends,As we complete our 117th year of service, we reflect upon the fundamental Jewish value that we are each responsible for one another. Families of allbackgrounds who are challenged by meeting basic human needs, life transitions, and mental health issues, seek guidance and support from JFS.While most of our clients are not Jewish, all of them learn what it means tobe Jewish: from the beauty of our traditions and the strength of our commandments, to our commitment to tikkun olam, building a better world. Our proudest moments during 2014 included enhancing our Youth Advocacy Program supporting highly vulnerable teens and their families;augmenting our Outpatient Behavioral Health program with drug and alcohol counseling services; increasing opportunities for volunteerismthrough the Brandywine Village Network and Mitzvah program for youth;endeavoring to secure the Agency’s future through Create a Jewish Legacy;and planning a strategic initiative for expansion into eastern Sussex County. But our greatest achievements can be summarized through one word – impact. From victims of domestic violence to those struggling withaddiction, from individuals confronting depression and anxiety to thosedealing with schizophrenia, from youth caught in the deleterious cycle ofpoverty and crime to older adults confronting increasing limitations – JFS’sexceptional programmatic outcomes and delivery helped strengthen theirwellbeing and improved their lives. Our success is the result of our leadership’s courage to start new programsand grow; the collaboration amongst our Board of Directors and the professional staff; our partnerships with Jewish Federation of Delaware,United Way of Delaware, government agencies, and private and corporatefoundations; the generosity of our donors and the commitment of our volunteers – all of which build on our foundation of tzedakah (justice), compassion, and loving kindness. Thank you to all of our stakeholders for sharing their wisdom and resourcesto support the dreams of JFS.

A NETWORK OF SUPPORT

In 2014, 126 volunteers met 1,588 requests for assistance fromBVN members.

Volunteers drove more than 5,000 miles, ensuring that BVNmembers reached their doctors, beauty salons, grocery stores, and more.

Volunteers with the Brandywine Village Network create a community of support for older adults in northeastern NewCastle County. Their tasks may seem simple - sewing a buttonon a coat, picking up groceries, weeding a garden, or driving toa doctor appointment - but their impact is profound.

OUR VOLUNTEERS MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

“I think technology is really important to communicating with other people, and that’s whyI especially wanted to help seniorcitizens with technology.” An admitted tech enthusiast, Hyungjun (Corey) Hahn began volunteering with BVN in December 2013. On Thursdays and Saturdays, he leads one-on-one Q&A’s and teaches seniors how toemail, use Facebook, do research on Google, and solve other problems.

CREATING A JEWISH LEGACY

This year, JFS renewed our commitment to Create a Jewish Legacy. In partnershipwith the Jewish Federation of Delaware, the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, andother local Jewish organizations, we endeavor to secure our future so that there willalways be a Jewish Family Services to care for this community. We are each responsible for one another. By making their gift, JFS Legacy Donorsenable JFS to respond to changing social and economic demands that challenge ourcommunity and ensure that those in need and crisis will be able to turn to JFS forsupport and guidance – for this generation and for those to come.
