    ALABAMA STATE UNIVERSITY

    World Class. World Ready.

Alabama State University is in the midst of a vital season of transformation. While holding true to its legacy of providing a quality education for its students, the University also is experiencing unprecedented growth, both physically and academically.

THE LEGACYAlabama State University evolved from the Lincoln Normal School that opened on Nov. 13, 1867, with 113 students, thanks to the courageous efforts of its founders, nine former slaves from Perry County, Ala., known affectionately as the Marion Nine. The Lincoln School incorporated on July 18, 1867. In 1868, the State Board of Education gave the school a new designation, and it became known as Lincoln Normal School.

In December 1873, the state board accepted the transfer of title to the school after a legislative act was passed authorizing the state to fund a Normal School. George N. Card was named president. Thus, the predecessor of Alabama State University became the first state-supported educational institution for blacks. This began ASUs rich history as a Teachers College.

In 1887, the second president, William Burns Paterson, was instrumental in the institutions move from Marion to Montgomery. In the decades that followed, Lincoln Normal School became a junior college and, in 1928, a full four-year institution. More name changes were on the horizon: In 1929, the institution became State Teachers College at Montgomery, Alabama State College for Negroes in 1948 and Alabama State College in 1954. In 1969, the State Board of Education, then the governing body of the University, approved a name change to Alabama State University.

THE TRANSFORMATIONThe Universitys Vision 2020 Transformation initiative was launched when Dr. William H. Harris returned to the University in 2008. During his first tenure (1994-2000), Harris was instrumental in the Knight v. State of Alabama remedial decree, which resulted in much of the tremendous growth that the University has experienced over the past 15 years. Because of the decree, the University has been transformed both physically and academically. Multimillion dollar academic and athletic buildings now grace the 172-acre campus, including new football, baseball and softball stadiums, as well as upgrades to existing facilities.

High-demand academic programs have been established and cutting-edge research is being conducted by ASU faculty and students. We now offer Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science, as well as masters and education specialist degrees. The University also offers the Ph. D. in microbiology, the clinical doctorate in physical therapy, and the Ed.D. and the Ph.D. in educational leadership, policy and law. With a focus on a global initiative, the campus has a diverse student and faculty population while maintaining its proud heritage as a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

Alabama State University charters more than 70 student organizations, including nine Greek organizations and 17 honors organizations. In addition to social, cultural and political groups, students have musical performance opportunities, such as the Mighty Marching Hornets and the University Choir, and departmental organizations for most majors. Intercollegiate athletic programs include baseball, basketball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, softball, golf, bowling and cross country. The ASU Hornets are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and compete at the NCAA Division I level.

THE FUTUREASU has its eye on the future while remaining true to its mission of being a student-centered institution that provides quality programs in undergraduate and graduate instruction, continuing education and research. The faculty, staff and administration of the University are committed to the pursuit of the institutional goal of preparing students to compete successfully in an increasingly global economy.

    UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

Dr. Gwendolyn Elizabeth Boyd returned on February 1, 2014, to Ala-bama State University - her alma mater - as its new President, after an extraordinary career of leadership and public service that has spanned more than three decades in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area.

A Montgomery, Ala., native, Boyd earned her undergraduate degree from Alabama State University (ASU), with a major in mathematics and a double minor in physics and music. Upon graduation, Boyd re-ceived a fellowship to pursue graduate work at Yale University, where she was the first African-American female to earn a Master of Sci-ence degree in Mechanical Engineering from this Ivy League institu-tion. She also has earned both the Master of Divinity and the Doctor of Ministry degrees from Howard University.

Boyds relationship with ASU actually began when she was a child, living just a few blocks away from the University. Despite her humble beginnings, Boyd excelled early and consistently as a student. Her life as a trailblazer began when, as a teenager, she was one of five black students chosen to inte-grate Montgomerys Baldwin Junior High School. Continuing as a pioneer, she helped to establish an interracial council while at Jefferson Davis High School, was a member of the National Honor Society, performed in the school choir and graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1973.

Boyd came to ASU on an academic scholarship, and in her words, the University embraced me, invested in me and changed my life inexorably. As a college student, her academic and leader-ship skills were evident, as she was inducted into Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society, Beta Kappa Chi Education Honor Society and Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society; pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and was the Beta Eta Chapter president on campus; was a member of and traveled with the Young Hearts gospel singers; was elected Miss Alabama State University (1976-77) and graduated summa cum laude in 1977.

Boyds professional career at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) was highlighted by exemplary leadership and dedicated service. Early in her career, she was an analyst in the Stra-tegic Systems Department, where she was part of engineering teams that conducted independent analyses and operational performance evaluations of Strategic Weapons Systems on Polaris, Poseidon and Trident submarines. In 1999, she became the Assistant for Develop-ment Programs and was later named Executive Assistant to the Chief of Staff at APL. In 1997, Boyd was selected to serve on the Johns Hop-kins Diversity Leadership Council, and served as chair from 2001-2014, reporting directly to the President of Johns Hopkins University as the council worked on issues of diversity, inclusion, civility and respect across the various divisions of Johns Hopkins.

A nationally recognized champion of education, Boyd has spearheaded efforts across the nation and in other countries to help broaden the scope of educational offerings, especially as it relates to STEM (sci-ence, technology, engineering and math) disciplines.

Because of her efforts in advancing education, Boyd was nominated by President Barack Obama and received U.S. Senate confirmation to serve as a trustee to the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excel-lence in Education Foundation in 2009.

President Barack Obama has appointed Boyd to the Presidents Ad-visory Commission on Educational Excellence for African-Americans. This Commission is charged with strengthening the nation by improv-ing educational outcomes for African-Americans and to ensure that all African-Americans receive an education that prepares them for col-lege, productive careers, and satisfying lives.

Boyd also is a minister and an ordained itiner-ant elder in the AME Church. While in Maryland, she served on the ministerial staff of Ebenezer AME Church in Fort Washington, Md.

In 2000, Boyd was elected to serve as the 22nd National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., an international organization of more than 250,000 members. Known as the Technology President, Boyd helped to establish technology in all facets of the sororitys activities and ad-ministration. Her four-year tenure as president included a number of transformative accom-plishments, including the launching of Project SEE (Science in Everyday Experiences), an initia-tive funded by a $1.6 million National Science Foundation grant with a goal of promoting math and science for middle school African-American girls. She also led the sororitys humanitarian and education advocacy efforts in various parts of Africa, including Swaziland, Lesotho and Soweto, South Africa. In 2013, Boyd served as chair of the sororitys Centennial Celebration,

which involved organizing a year-long series of events culminating in a Washington, D.C.-based convention that drew more than 40,000 par-ticipants from around the world.

Boyd is a lifelong community servant, having served on boards of local, national and international organizations, including the Links, Incorpo-rated; Childrens National Health Center in Washington, D.C.; the Na-tional Partnership for Community Leadership; the United Way; and the APL Federal Credit Union. Her work has earned dozens of awardsand honors, including two honorary doctorates and Congressional recogni-tions. She has been honored with 23 Keys to various cities through-out the country, declarations of Gwendolyn E. Boyd Day in eight cities in the country, civic citations, and various leadership and volunteer awards, as well as professional awards for her achievements in the fields of engineering and higher education.

    ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION

Melvin Hines has helped guide the Universitys athletics program through their most successful seasons to date, highlighted this past season by Alabama State sweeping the Southwestern Athletic Conferences all-sports awards. ASU won the Commissioners Cup Trophy for best overall sports program in the SWAC, and also the womens and mens all-sports trophies as well, highlighted by six league championships and seven runners-up finishes in 2013-14.

A former wide receiver at Auburn University, Hines began his coaching career in 1997 as a graduate assistant at the University of Louisville. The Huntsville native returned home in 1998 to serve as receivers coach for the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, a position he held for next four years. He moved to administration to develop and implement the CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes Minds for Academic Success)/Life Skills Program, working with student athletes in career and personal development, as well as in commitment to academics and service. Hines also served as Judicial Affairs Officer for the Bulldogs (2003-04).

Hines gained additional experience at Troy University as director of Student Athlete Services (2005-06) before moving to the University of Minnesota, serving as liaison to various on-campus departments while focusing on developing and implementing a comprehensive advising program for student athletes. From 2008 to 2011, Hines was the associate director of Student Athlete Academic Support Services at the University of Mississippi, where he assisted with the oversight, coordination and daily operations of the Department for Rebel Athletics.

Hines began his tenure with Alabama State University in August of 2010 when he was hired as senior associate director of Intercollegiate Athletics. In that position, Hines has provided senior level management and leadership for directing event operations, facilities and administrative services, as well as providing team/sport oversight, budgeting and personnel management. Hines is one of the leaders of the strategic

and operational planning team for the University, and assists with public relations and development activities. In addition to providing direct oversight for 18 sports, Hines has served as the Athletics Department liaison for the construction of multiple athletics facilities, including the New Hornet Stadium, the Houston Markham Jr. Football complex, the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex and the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.

Hines holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Adult Education from Auburn University and a Master of Science in Education with a concentration in Sports Administration from the University of Louisville. Among his professional affiliations, he is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National

Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD), Minority Opportunity Athletic Association (MOAA) and the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A).

Hines, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., is married to Landy, and the couple has three children, sons DeAndre (23), Tyler (20), and daughter Madison (9).

FOOTBALL TRADITION Since 1901, football the Souths great passion has been an inte-gral part of the ASU experience . Thousands of young men have worn the black and gold jerseys and become Hornets for life!

ASU hosts the nations oldest black college game (the Turkey Day Classic) and competes in the black college classic with the number one attendance (the Magic City Classic) .

ASU is regularly invited to participate in games and events across the country . The Hornets also boast a long list of players who have gone on to star in the NFL .

Each week, the Mighty Marching Hornets storm the field at halftime to the delight of fans, as the ASU cheerleaders and the Hornet mascot energize the home crowd . And at the final horn no matter the final score the ASU fans stand with hands raised as the alma mater is played .

Football Saturdays are truly special at ASU, creating memories, build-ing legends and making the dreams of young men come true .

FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPSAlabama State Universitys century of football success has been highlighted by one Black College National Championship, one SIAC Championship, two Southwestern Athletic Conference championships, and three SWAC Eastern Division Championships .

The 1935 Hornets squad of head coach Rufas Lewis won the SIAC Champi-onship, winning six games by shutout, and finished the season with a 9-1-1 record .

In 1991, ASU head coach Houston Markham led the most dominant Hornets team ever to an 11-0-1 season that included six consecutive victories by at least 28 points . ASU captured the Black College National Championship that season, beating North Carolina A&T 36-13 in the Heritage Bowl . All-American linebacker Eddie Robinson was named SWAC Defensive Player of the Year . Robinson became the highest drafted player in ASU history when he was selected in the second round by the Houston Oilers in the 1992 NFL draft .

ASU won Eastern Division Cham-pionships in 2003, 2004 and 2010 . In 2004, the Hornets post-ed a 10-2 record and their second SWAC title as quarterback Tarvaris Jackson led ASU to a thrilling 40-35 win over Southern in the SWAC Championship Game . Jackson would go on to be a second-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2006 .

HORNET WALKThe Turkey Day Classic the oldest of Ameri-cas black college football rivalries has long been the standard against which other clas-sics are judged . In 2007, the TDC added an-other element to its rich tradition the Hornet Walk .

With the entire Mighty Marching Hornets forming a black and gold human tunnel and the ASU cheerleaders leading the way, the Hornets football team made its way off the team buses through the huge crowd in the parking lot and into the New ASU Sta-dium . For the first time ever, the fans had the chance to cheer on and fire up the team be-fore the game started .

Hornet Walk was an immediate hit with both fans and players and is now a part of the greatest black college event of the year, the Turkey Day Classic .

ONE DREAMONE DREAMONE TEAMONE TEAMALABAMA STATE FOOTBALLReggie Barlow will enter his eighth season as the Hornets head coach, and the 10th season on

the ASU staff . After serving two years as quarterbacks coach, Barlow took over the reins in 2007 and since then has become the Hornets third all-time winning coach in the history of Bama State football .

After building a foundation during his first three years at the helm, the last four years have seen Barlow lead ASU to four consecutive winning campaigns which hasnt happened since the 1967-70 seasons . He has led the team to a 30-16 overall record during that time and a 27-9 conference record .

Three of the past four seasons has seen the Alabama State University football program tied for the best record in the SWACs Eastern Division, earning a berth in the championship game in 2010 .

We tried to build the program the right way, where we would be able to put consecutive years together where we are competing for the championship, Barlow said . I think our coaches and players have done a good job of that . Going into this season, were expecting the same . Were hoping the coaches we have here and the players we have in the program will again put us in position to compete for a championship at the end of the season .

The program will play its second full season in New ASU Stadium, a sparkling new $62 million stadium which opened Thanksgiving Day 2012 .

For our University, students and fans, its history in the making, Barlow said of the 26,500-seat venue which will again host six games this season . Its rare when you get to be involved in the first time for a facility . Its a blessing were in this position to lead the program in our new stadium .

A record-breaking receiver and kick returner, Barlow was recruited to ASU by the legendary Houston Markham, for whom the ASU football complex is named .

During his senior year, Barlow caught 58 passes for 1,267 yards . The Montgomery native and Sidney Lanier High School standout finished his Hornet career with 133 catches and 2,536 yards, school records surpassed in 2011 by former wideout Nick Andrews .

Barlows success as a coach has been shown with his record on the field, but the SWAC recognized his performance as a player when he was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame in 2013 .

The NFL took notice and Barlow was selected in the fourth round of the 1996 NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars . It was the kickoff to a successful professional career .

ONE DREAMONE DREAMONE TEAMONE TEAMALABAMA STATE FOOTBALLTo this day, Barlows name is still etched on several of the

teams records . In 1998, Barlow led the NFL in punt return yardage, with 43 returns for 555 yards and a touchdown and was named a Pro Bowl alternate .

He still ranks among the Jaguars career leaders for most punt returns (79), most punt return yards (967), and average per return (12 .2), as well as among the single-season record holders for most punt returns (55 in 1998), most punt return yards (555 in 1998) and average per return (12 .9) in 1998 .

After five years in Jacksonville, Barlow joined the Oakland Raiders . In 2002, Barlow began his two-year tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he would soon earn a Super Bowl Ring .

Even after Barlows retirement, the NFL has not forgotten about the former Pro Bowler . He has agreed to work as a representative of the NFL to be their spokesman in the NFL Play 60 initiative . He goes out and speaks to elementary children in the state of Alabama about the importance of eating healthy and staying active with exercise or play at least 60 minutes each day .

Even at the height of his success, the idea of coaching was never far from Barlows mind . Throughout his career, he collected tips, ideas and habits of his coaches, going so far as to record them in a notebook .

He would put that information and experience to good use when he joined the ASU football staff as quarterbacks coach in 2005 . In his first season, Barlow served as mentor and tutor to future NFL second-round draftee Tarvaris Jackson currently a quarterback with the Seattle Seahawks whose team won the 2014 Super Bowl .

In 2006, Barlow worked with a trio of quarterbacks without a single snap of college football experience between them . Under Barlows tutelage, Alex Engram would earn a SWAC Newcomer of the Week award and finish eighth in the conference in total offense .

After that season, Barlow was named interim head coach . Just a few weeks later, the interim title was removed and Barlows dream was realized .

I love ASU, Barlow said . They have been so good to me and my family . This is my dream job .

Barlow is the father of three children Ericka, Reggie Jr . and Simone .

Kevin Ramsey is in his second sea-son as Alabama State defensive co-ordinator, joining the Hornets from SWAC rival Texas Southern Univer-sity, where he spent nearly four sea-sons with the program .

It didnt take long for Ramsey to put his hand print on the Hornets defense, as ASU improved to finish second among SWAC schools in scoring defense allowing 25 .8 points per game .

Ramseys attacking style of defense made it hard on the opposi-tions running game as the Hornets only allowed a SWAC-best 110 .1 yards rushing per game which not only led the SWAC but was 11th nationally . ASU led the SWAC in quarterback sacks with 50, a 4 .17 per game average that placed ASU second among all FCS teams . Ramsey served in the same capacity for TSU from 2009-10, and during most of the 2012 season, after a stint as interim head coach in 2011 . Ramseys Tigers led the FCS in total defense in both 2010 (204 .9 ypg allowed) and 2011 (245 .0 ypg allowed), and in fewest first downs allowed (140 in 2010, 141 in 2011) . His 2010 squad led the nation in six statistical categories: total defense, fewest first downs allowed, sacks (45), tackles for loss (112), lowest third down percentage allowed (22 .5) and pass ef-ficiency defense (78 .9) .

Prior to Texas Southern, Ramsey spent five seasons as defensive coordinator at Carson-Newman (2004-08), where his units ranked in the top 20 in several national categories each season .

Ramsey began his coaching career at Kansas State (1984-85) as a graduate assistant and junior varsity defensive coordinator at Mission High School in Mission, Texas (1986) before coaching at some of the nations biggest schools - Kansas State (1987-89, outside linebackers), Northwestern (1990-92, defensive line/defensive backs), West Virginia (1993-94, defensive backs), Ten-nessee (1995-98, defensive backs), Georgia (1999, defensive co-ordinator) and Michigan State (2000, defensive backs) .

Ramsey, who participated in NFL coaching internships with the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles, coached three seasons as secondary coach for the Arizona Car-dinals (2000-02) before returning to the college ranks at Arizona State in 2003 .

Teams that Ramsey has coached have been to a number of bowl games including the Outback Bowl with Georgia in 2000, the Carquest Bowl in 1995 and Sugar Bowl in 1994 with Big East Champion West Virginia and two trips to the Citrus Bowl in 1996 and 1997, the Orange Bowl in 1998 and the Fiesta Bowl National Championship Game with Tennessee in January of 1999 .

Ramsey was a three-time All-Missouri Valley pick at defensive back while playing at Indiana State from 1980-83 . He was a sec-ond team All-American as a senior and also played baseball for the Sycamores . He graduated from Indiana State with a degree in Physical Education in 1984 .

A native of East St . Louis, Illinois, Ramsey and his wife Doreen have four daughters: Kajavia, Samiya, Tresnae and Amariell .
