Kentlake Culinary Arts Team Dominates the Black Box Competition at Renton Technical College The Kentlake Culinary Team competed in a Black Box Competition at Renton Technical College on Saturday 25. This amazing team placed first among regional schools at this invitational. The team of Jeremy Cooker, Dylan Grisgby, Isaac Trujillo, Celeste Drummond and Jalen Koon presented a three course menu consisting of a Cream of Artichoke Soup, Chicken Supreme with a Chasseur Sauce, white truffle mashed potatoes, roasted carrots and a chocolate mousse with fresh berries Along with their first place award, the team was presented with a $500 prize from the prestigious chef organization of the Chaine Des Rotisseurs to be used for kitchen enrichment. Kentwood High School and Kent-Meridian High School Sewing and Fashion Design Students Attend Fashion Industry Conferene Saturday, April 25, eight students from Kentwood and five students from Kent-Meridian traveled together to the Fashion Industry Conference. This year the conference was held at Sanford Brown College. The students enjoyed participating in several hands-on seminars highlighting many different fashion careers. The students also met representatives from several colleges that have fashion programs. Kentwood student Anna Wall was awarded prizes in two contests for dresses that she created! Anna received her awards for the following: Fashion Forward, second place for creating a Belle costume, and Fashion Construction, third place for creating a beautiful lavender dress The students that attended are already planning for projects they plan to make to prepare for next year’s contest!

Kent High School Students Attend Women in Trades Career Fair

The 32nd Annual Washington Women in Trades Career Fair was held on Friday, May 8, in Fisher Pavilion at Seattle Center. Seventy three exhibitors showcased their employment opportunities both inside Fisher Pavilion and outdoors. The main purpose of this event is to encourage women to enter non-traditional, high-wage jobs. Students from our Kent High Schools were exposed to many of the original four-year degree apprenticeships, as well as career opportunities in police, fire, construction, and power/utilities. The inter-active activities included building a wooden pencil box, climbing a utility pole,

welding and a sand shoveling contest. This field trip is among the favorites of the school year and gives students the chance to talk to potential employers in person.

Kentlake High School College, Career & Community Service Fair a Huge Success

The Kentlake College, Career and Community Service Fair was held at Kentlake High School on Wednesday, April 22. Over 40 colleges, businesses and community organizations set up tables in the gymnasium from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Students met with the vendors during class time and/or at lunches. They learned about post-secondary opportunities with

public and private colleges, technical schools and military organizations. Some businesses offered full-time jobs or apprenticeships after graduation. Other groups were looking for volunteer help and a chance for students to complete their community service requirement. Students, staff and fair participants felt the event was successful because it gave students another opportunity to make informed choices for their future plans.

Kentridge High School DECA Sends Students to the DECA International Career Development Conference

Kentridge High School was represented by four outstanding young people in two categories at the DECA International Career Development Conference held in Orlando, Florida in April. Eighteen thousand students and advisors attended the six day event. During these days students compete completing a rigorous test and role play presentation against the top twenty percent in the world in their respective categories. Kentridge students, Payton Boere and Sunny Chung went on to represent Kentridge in the semi-finals, medaling in the top ten percent. They competed in the following categories: Payton Boere and Sunny Chung in Buying and Merchandising Team Decision Making Kenny Darcey and Alec Delucia Marketing Communications Team Decision Making

Clover Park Technical College Career Conference Gives Kent-Meridian High School Students Another Look at Non-Traditional Career Opportunities

Students from Kent-Meridian High School attended the 2015 Clover Park Technical College Career Conference, themed “Yourself In The Future,” on Thursday, May 14. Clover Park had 43 career options to visit. Upon arrival, students were given a packet with the conference schedule and a list of all activities and their locations. Students were encouraged to check out new or non-traditional career opportunities. They were also given a

career pathway worksheet and encouraged to ask lots of questions.

Highlights included a car show, a health care fair, and an advanced manufacturing fair. Other programs that were popular included automotive, cosmetology, computer information technology, graphic design, architectural design, aviation maintenance, environmental science and professional pilot. The general consensus among students on the return trip to Kent-Meridian was that this event made them aware of the many different programs Clover Park has to offer that they had not previously considered.

Advanced Marketing Students from Kentlake High School take on Seattle Kentridge Marketing students visited downtown Seattle (Westlake), including Pike Place Market under sunny skies on Monday, May 18. The advanced marketing students are currently studying the elements of visual merchandising and the assignment was to take a variety of pictures and find unique examples of things such as window displays, marquees, and signage. Students were also to find companies that uniquely display graphics, color and sound inside or outside of their stores. For all students, and especially students who had not previously experienced these venues, it was a great learning experience.

Covington Chamber of Commerce Holds Monthly Meeting at Kentlake High School

The Covington Chamber of Commerce held their monthly meeting at

Kentlake High School on May 14. Approximately 30 chamber members

enjoyed lunch planned, prepared and served by students from

Kentlake’s Careers in Culinary Arts classes.

Dr. Joe Potts, Kentlake High School Principal, welcomed the chamber

members and introduced the culinary students, culinary instructor

Cecilia Stec and mentor chef, Denise Onorati. Dr. Potts updated chamber

members on the success of the first year of the CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) program held at Kentlake in

partnership with Renton Technical College.

Also presenting at the chamber meeting was Kentlake student Merissa McFarland. Merissa serves as Area 5 DECA

President. She explained what the DECA program is all about and asked for support (judging at regional and state events,

financial, mentoring, etc.) from local businesses and chamber members.

Covington Chamber of Commerce Scholarship and RIB Scholarship winners were introduced to the audience as was the

recipient of the Covington Chamber of Commerce Education Volunteer of the Year award.

Kentridge High School Photography Students Honored at the Washington

State High School Photo Competition

Congratulations to Elizabeth Kupchenko and Sydney Horton from Kentridge High School! They were both honored at the Washington State High School Photo Competition on June 4. Elizabeth Kupchenko took first place in the manipulation category winning $100. Sydney Horton took third place in Still Life and received the coveted award of having her image placed on 250,000 Jones Soda bottles! Both their images were 2 of 3 images chosen for the marketing posters for the awards show. Their

images and the rest of the winners from the show will be displayed at both the Seattle and Tacoma Art

Museum in the fall.

Cedar Heights Middle School Students Tour Local College Campuses on College & Career Day

Cedar Heights Middle School hosted College & Career Day on June 8. Eighth grade students traveled to local college campuses during the day. Seventh graders remained at Cedar Heights to hear representatives from colleges and technical schools speak about various options available to students during and after high school.

Speakers talked about their schools, programs, highlights, student culture, and why education now is important to obtain admissions to a post-secondary program. Kentlake High School Career Specialist, Wendy Hurst, was invited to attend and talk about Kentlake and the high school experience, classes and programs available at Kentlake, her position and how she can assist students with career exploration. Wendy also emphasized to the students the importance of always doing well academically and exploring career options during high school so students can make relevant, well-informed career decisions for their futures. The Cedar Heights students were respectful of the visitors and appreciated the opportunity to hear about career choices and the many possibilities available.

Kentwood High School Has a Successful Showing at the 2015 VisFest Twenty-four of Kentwood’s Game Programming and Special Projects in Computer Science students had a very successful showing at the 2015 VisFest on Thursday, May 28. Kent School District’s VisFest celebrates the visual literacy skills of Kent School District students. Over the course of the year, these students created video games and then submitted them for competition at the festival. Of the seven awards given for video games, Kentwood students took home five of the awards. The award winners were: Best of VisFest: Roberto Martinez for “Little Boy” Best of VisFest: Conrad Coronel for “Nomad” Best of VisFest: Tyler Sykes for “Rust in Peace” Special Recognition: Jaime Stanton for “Haunted House” Special Recognition: Isaiah Fulwider for “Baltazar II”

Kentridge Culinary Arts Students Hard at Work Kentridge Culinary Arts students were busy this spring preparing and serving at several catering events. These events included the Kentridge Photo Club Auction, National School Board Technology Luncheon, and Kent Area PTA Founder’s Day Banquet. All Culinary Arts students helped prepare food for these events and over 40 different students participated in one or more events before and after school.

Business Students from Kentwood High School Visit Highline Community

College

Kentwood students in the Business Education classes traveled to Highline College on May 27 to learn about Highlines’ business, business technology and computer information technology programs. The students heard from Highline staff, participated in a scavenger hunt of the HC campus and divided into groups to participate in workshops related to the programs.

At the end the day a panel of Highline College students (Running Start, part-time and full-time students of varying backgrounds) shared their experiences with the high school students. They talked about college life, the pros and cons of being a college student, and gave advice to be a successful student (time management is very important!). The Kentwood students and chaperones found the visit to be a valuable learning experience and appreciated the opportunity to learn more about Highline Community College and various programs.

Kentridge High School Creative Cooking Students Explore Pike Place Market

As part of a cultural foods unit, Kentridge Creative Cooking students went to Pike Place Market on Thursday, May 21. On the field trip, the 67 students were divided into small groups to complete a scavenger hunt, sample at least one type of food and write a food review. They also had time to explore the shops and the open market stands.

Congratulations to Kentwood High School Microsoft Masters

Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) are industry certifications that students can earn that verifies the skills and knowledge they have with each of the Microsoft Office programs. Students at Kentwood High School have been taking the MOS exams as part of their Computer Application courses. During the 2014-15 year there were 64 students that passed a total of 224 MOS certifications. Eighteen of the certifications were at the Master MOS level. Very impressive and congratulations!

Marketing Students for Kentlake High School Attend Pro Sports Day at

SafeCo Field

On Wednesday, June 3rd, a group of Kentlake Marketing students attended Pro

Sports Career Day at Safeco Field. While DECA runs this event, all marketing

students were invited to attend. Students had the opportunity to hear from

top marketing

executives with the

Mariners. The

Human Resources

Director gave

students tips for success in the business world, including how

to interview and present oneself professionally. The day ended

with an exciting Mariners game against the Yankees. It was

both a fun and educational day for students!

Kentridge High School Photography Students Compete at the State

SkillsUSA Competition

Seven students from Kentridge competed at SkillsUSA regional competition, two moved on to the State Competition at Stadium High School. Serena Southwick and Matthew Granger both competed at state which students showed their skills in a studio lighting shoot, a Photoshop technical correction and edit, as well as a written test and a print

submission. Serena Southwick took second place overall for Kentridge.

Kent Community Foundation and Kent Rotary Scholarship Celebration

On May 21, at Kent-Meridian High School, the

Kent Community Foundation, Kent Rotary, and

Kent Sunrise Rotary celebrated the recipients of

their 2015 scholarships. Each of these

community groups spend many hours each year

raising funds to support the graduates of the

Kent School District as they transition into their

post-secondary programs. The Kent School

District appreciates the strong support of these

community groups that has been ongoing for many years for our district’s students.
