FAQ’s for Prescribers

What are Clinical Advisory Panels?Clinical Advisors are clinicians with expertise in prescription of equipment and at least seven yearsexperience in their area. The Clinical Advisory Panels are will ensure that SWEP has a team of ‘SubjectMatter Experts’ who will:

• provide support for inexperienced prescribers, • ensure improved prescription of equipment, • provide clinical support to the programs,• enable a formal link to be established with the professional associations,• work with supply management to identify product specifications and • enable clinical review of new assistive technology.

What are the areas of expertise for the Clinical Advisors?Children’s equipment, mobility equipment (including wheelchairs), beds, bed related and transferequipment, home modifications, environmental controls, continence aids & oxygen.

How many clinical advisors will be available for each area?There will be 3-4 Clinical Advisors appointed to each area of expertise for both the Children & Adults. This is to make sure all disciplines who prescribe are represented and all sectors, and will ensureavailability of experts in each area at short notice.

Will the Clinical Advisors consult with current prescribers?The Clinical Advisory Panels will be appointed from the responses to the publicly advertised Expression of Interest. The Panels will hold their first meeting in December where Terms of Reference will bedetermined. It is envisaged that the Clinical Advisory Panels will seek input from their professionalassociations and others as appropriate.

What does credentialing mean for prescribers?The SWEP will introduce credentialing for prescribers and suppliers in July 2011. Prescribercredentialing will include at least evidence of a professional qualification as per A&EP guidelineequipment category assessment requirements.

Over the next few months the expert Clinical Advisory Panels will develop criteria for higher levelprivileging to allow more expert prescribers to be identified for more complex prescriptions. Such amodel already exists in the EnableNSW equipment program where prescription of more complexequipment items requires the prescriber to have relevant experience that will include both amount oftime prescriber has worked in the equipment prescription and also the number of equipment prescriptions previously completed.

Prescriber credentialing will not be introduced during the transition phase.

Will non-credentialed prescribers be able to make application to SWEP?All prescribers will need to be credentialed to make application to SWEP after 30 June 2011. A processwill be developed prior to that date.

Will health services be able to provide equipment and receive funding later (for example using a pre-approval process)?This is outside A&EP guidelines and cannot be accommodated in the SWEP

Choosing the right size will depend on a number of factors. Obviously your height and weight will make a significant difference as well as the type of use for which the scooter is intended.

P o r t a b l e S c o o t e r s Great for people needing to transport regularly. Ideally suited to smaller framed users, primarily for indoor use on flat surfaces. Speeds vary up to 7km/h and most offer a maximum distance between 16-30km per charge.

M e d i u m S c o o t e r s By far the most popular size of scooter. Suitable for general outdoor use, limited indoor use and occasional transporting. These scooters offer varying speeds up to 10km/h and a maximum distance between 25-30km per charge.

L a r g e S c o o t e r s More suited to larger framed users, with weight capacities up to 220kg, spacious legroom and softer suspension. These scooters can handle harsher terrain, steeper hills and more robust usage. They offer varying speeds up to 15km/h and a maximum distance between 40-50km per charge.

Electric Scooters

3 -W h e e l scooters offer more legroom, making them better suited to taller users or those with knee problems. Their tighter turning circle makes them more manoeuvrable, for example, inside shops or for general indoor use. Some consider 3-wheel scooters to be ‘unstable’, however when driven correctly they are stable and safe to use.

Bathroom & Toilet AidsAs well as being the most essential room in the house, the bathroom can also be one of the most dangerous and, in many cases, inaccessible to the elderly or disabled. But there are many simple ways to make the bathroom safer and much easier to use. Here is some useful information and handy tips on how to overcome the bathroom blues.

T H E B AT H

Obviously the biggest concern is how to get into and out of the bath safely. A few hints to help:

• Remove all rugs and carpet. Make sure the floor is

non-slip or fit a non-slip mat next to the bath. A non-slip

mat inside the bath is essential.

• To help get in and out, the bath should have a clamp-ongrab rail or there should be a grab rail fitted on the wall.

• A bath board can help by sitting the person on the boardbefore swinging their legs into the bath.

• Hand held bath or shower hoses are essential for sitting

or standing in the bath.

T H E S H O W E R

While a shower is usually a lot easier to negotiate for many people, there are still many products that can make showering safer and easier.

• Non-slip mats are essential – both inside and outside

the shower.

• Shower stools or chairs make showering more comfortable

• Install grab rails for extra security.

• There is a good range of shower commodes and mobiletransporters available, which can be safely used in a

shower. In this case, a hand held shower hose is morefunctional for seated people.

For those unable to use the toilet, commodes, urinals and bedpans help. For people who can use the toilet, products are available that overcome height or accessibility problems:

• Raised toilet seats help patients get on and off more easily.

• Grab rails fitted to the wall or the actual toilet surroundframe also assist.

• Over toilet aids help by raising the height of the toilet seatand provide armrests to push up from when rising. Somemodels can be adjusted for height.

Bedside commodes are excellent for patients who are bedridden or if the patient is unable to use their bathroom. Commodes come in many models from fully upholstered chairs to folding or mobile versions. They are all designed to be used with a commode pan or other receptacle.

FAQ’s for Prescribers

What are Clinical Advisory Panels?Clinical Advisors are clinicians with expertise in prescription of equipment and at least seven yearsexperience in their area. The Clinical Advisory Panels are will ensure that SWEP has a team of ‘SubjectMatter Experts’ who will:

• provide support for inexperienced prescribers, • ensure improved prescription of equipment, • provide clinical support to the programs,• enable a formal link to be established with the professional associations,• work with supply management to identify product specifications and • enable clinical review of new assistive technology.

What are the areas of expertise for the Clinical Advisors?Children’s equipment, mobility equipment (including wheelchairs), beds, bed related and transferequipment, home modifications, environmental controls, continence aids & oxygen.

How many clinical advisors will be available for each area?There will be 3-4 Clinical Advisors appointed to each area of expertise for both the Children & Adults. This is to make sure all disciplines who prescribe are represented and all sectors, and will ensureavailability of experts in each area at short notice.

Will the Clinical Advisors consult with current prescribers?The Clinical Advisory Panels will be appointed from the responses to the publicly advertised Expression of Interest. The Panels will hold their first meeting in December where Terms of Reference will bedetermined. It is envisaged that the Clinical Advisory Panels will seek input from their professionalassociations and others as appropriate.

What does credentialing mean for prescribers?The SWEP will introduce credentialing for prescribers and suppliers in July 2011. Prescribercredentialing will include at least evidence of a professional qualification as per A&EP guidelineequipment category assessment requirements.

Over the next few months the expert Clinical Advisory Panels will develop criteria for higher levelprivileging to allow more expert prescribers to be identified for more complex prescriptions. Such amodel already exists in the EnableNSW equipment program where prescription of more complexequipment items requires the prescriber to have relevant experience that will include both amount oftime prescriber has worked in the equipment prescription and also the number of equipment prescriptions previously completed.

Prescriber credentialing will not be introduced during the transition phase.

Will non-credentialed prescribers be able to make application to SWEP?All prescribers will need to be credentialed to make application to SWEP after 30 June 2011. A processwill be developed prior to that date.

Will health services be able to provide equipment and receive funding later (for example using a pre-approval process)?This is outside A&EP guidelines and cannot be accommodated in the SWEP

Will health services receive retrospective funding if they provide items like oxygen while waitingfor approval or funding?This is outside A&EP guidelines and cannot be accommodated in the SWEP
