Ginger Colvin

Head Coach

Ginger High Colvin enters her eighth season as Head Coach of the Campbellsville University Lady Tigers. Though she has worn the title of head coach for only seven seasons, Colvin has been a part of the Lady Tiger family for more than two decades. Her Campbellsville University experience began in 1986 on the hardwood as a student athlete under then-head coach Donna Wise. In her playing career, Colvin was a star performer. In 1990, she was named a Third-Team All-American and the KIAC Player of the Year. She is one of four Lady Tigers to be named as an All-Conference selection for four consecutive seasons. She is also a member of the 1000 point club at Campbellsville University and a member of the Campbellsville University Athletics Hall of Fame. Impressively, Colvin still holds the NAIA national record for highest assist average in a career. She also ranks first in CU Lady Tiger basketball history for assists in a game, season, and career.

Upon completion of her playing career, Colvin’s love for Campbellsville University and passion for the game prompted her to begin her coaching career as an assistant coach under the direction of Hall of Fame Head Coach, Donna Wise. Coach Ginger High Colvin served as a part-time assistant for 12 years, from 1991-2003.

In 1997, Colvin was called upon to take over the reigns of a struggling Campbellsville High School Lady Eagle program. Coach Colvin’s impact on that program was both quick and remarkable. In seven seasons, her teams achieved a winning record five times. Colvin guided her Lady Eagle teams to three 20-win seasons and three 5th Region All-A Championships. One of those All-A Regional Championship teams advanced to the Elite 8 of the Class A State Tournament. She also led Campbellsville to two 20th District Titles (the first district titles in school history in women’s basketball). Colvin’s ultimate achievement at the high school ranks came in 2001 and 2002 when she guided her Lady Eagle squads to the championship game of the 5th Region tournament.

In 2003, Colvin returned to Campbellsville University as a full time assistant. Four seasons later, when Donna Wise announced her retirement, Colvin was the logical choice to fill Wise’s shoes. She is only the second head coach in the history of the Campbellsville University program.

In her tenure as head coach, Coach Colvin has accumulated a record of 185 wins and 54 losses. She has achieved 3 thirty win seasons, 5 Regular Season MSC Championships, and 2 MSC Tournament Championships. She has also been to the NAIA National Tournament Elite Eight 3 times.

In 2009-2010, the Lady Tigers became the first team in the history of the Mid-South Conference to go undefeated in conference play. Additionally, the Lady Tigers were named the NAIA National Team Champion of Character. To top it all off, Colvin was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year for the second year in a row and was a finalist to be named WBCA National Coach of the Year. 2010-2011 proved to be monumental as well. For the first time in Colvin’s tenure, the Lady Tigers won the Mid-South Conference tournament championship. They were champions of both the MSC Tournament and Regular Season for the first time in 7 years. Another 30 win season ended in a 7th trip to the NAIA National Tournament Elite Eight. The Lady Tigers finished the season with the highest ranking in school history at #2 in the nation. Last year, the Lady Tigers put together Colvin’s third thirty win season in route to both a Mid-South Conference Regular-Season Championship and a Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship. The 2013-2014 team finished the season ranked #5 in the nation and earned Colvin a third trip to the NAIA Elite Eight.

Coach Ginger Colvin is a relentless worker with a passion for the game of basketball and for Campbellsville University. She is adored by her players and respected by her peers. In a seven year span, she has revived the Campbellsville University program and has solidified the Lady Tigers’ position among the elite teams in the nation. Colvin’s competitive nature and tireless work ethic will continue to solidify the Lady Tiger’s position on the national scene for years to come.

Miranda Denney enters her eighth season as an assistant coach under Head Coach Ginger Colvin. Hootie (as she is known) has a true passion for the game of basketball and for Campbellsville University. As a Lady Tiger, Miranda played four seasons under legendary Head Coach Donna Wise. She was a member of two regular season conference championship teams and a member of one conference tournament championship team. Miranda competed in the NAIA National Tournament all four years of her playing career, and she led her team into the Elite 8 of the National Tournament from the point guard position in her freshman season.

Hootie was a gritty, hard-working player who always drew the toughest defensive assignment from the guard spot. She competed at the highest level every time she stepped onto the floor.

Off the floor, Miranda also made her mark on Campbellsville University. She was named Valedictorian of the CU senior class in 2005. She was also named Ms. Campbellsville in that same senior season. Throughout the course of her career on the hardwood, Hootie was named an Academic All-American twice and was also named to the Mid-South Conference Academic All-Conference three times. The

Scoop

Chris Schroader begins his first season as a manager for the Lady Tigers. In his own words: “I wanted to be a manager for the Lady Tiger Basketball program as I aspire to win championships and continue the LTB tradition.” Chris chose Campbellsville University because “it’s a Christian College and it’s built around a Christ-centered community. I also want to find my true calling.”

Before coming to Campbellsville, Chris attended Ohio County High School where he was the manager for four years. In his first two years of high school basketball, he managed for the men’s team at Ohio County. During that time, Chris’s teams had a record of 47 wins and 20 losses. He got to enjoy a District Championship and a 29-3 season his sophomore year. When his junior year of high school rolled around, Chris changed his focus and began managing for the women’s basketball program at Ohio County. During that time, his teams had a record of 44 wins and 17 losses and earned two district championships. Chris received a student coach award his freshman year; a student assistant award his sophomore season, and a “Mr. Lady Eagle” award his senior year. He graduated from Ohio County with a 3.4 GPA and was named an All-American Scholar in 2010, 2011, and 2013.

Season Preview

STORY BY RICHARD ROBARDS

Ginger Colvin is like the movie producer coming off an

Emmy-Award-winning production. After Mid-South Con-

ference regular season and tournament titles and a run to

the Elite Eight at the 2014 NAIA National Tournament,

Colvin is hoping the sequel offers at least as good a view-

ing experience.

Many of the actresses are the same, but enough retired …

leaving a 42 points-per-game scoring gap, 15 rebounds

per game differential and a 48 percent loss in the team's

assists.

“This year's team really has me optimistic about what we

can achieve,” said Colvin. “We have the most solid post

game since my start as head coach. We also have great

depth there.

“But you don't win games on paper. We're going to have

to work hard to achieve any success near what we had last

season.”

CU was the preseason pick to finish third in the MSC and

ninth in the NAIA in 2013-14. The end result was, of

course, a first-place finish in conference and a No. 5 end-

of-season national ranking. The 2014-15 conference and

national rankings are not expected to be released until

later this month.

The Lady Tigers return five players who started at times

during the past season and averaged 18 minutes per game

on a team that had no one average more than 25. That's

because CU was out-scoring its opponents by 21 points

per game while compiling the second best record (32-4)

in Colvin's head coaching career.

“We have some very talented returners at the guard spot

that compliment our posts so well,” continued Colvin.

“We are good from long range with very good play at the

point. We also have some newcomers that have the poten-

tial to impact this season.

“This group is up to the incredibly tough challenge of

repeating in one of the nation's toughest conferences. The

returners' numbers don't look daunting because of the

depth of last year's squad. A lot of players that suit up for

us this season were impact players last year.”

The Lady Tigers return three of the top five scorers from

last season in seniors Daizah Kimberland (10.4) and

.

Caroline Owen (7.9), and junior Lindsey Burd (8.9). The

top three rebounders also return in Burd (7.5), Kimberland

(5.1), and junior Kristen Jacob (3.7). Fifth-year senior

Chelsea Craig also joins the mix in the post after sitting

out last season. She brings 7.2 points per game and 4.5

rebounds in a supporting role.

Sophomore-to-be LeeAnn Grider dished out the second

highest assist total (118) during 2013-14 while averaging

only 15 minutes a game.

Owen hit a team-high-tying 61 3-pointers last season,

connecting on a team-best 46 percent from behind the arc.

Her nine 3s against Milligan College on News Year's Eve

(2013) are a school record.

Campbellsville's 2013-14 signature, though, was on the

defensive end where the Lady Tigers held opponents to 59

points per game and caused 810 turnovers, giving them, on

average, eight more possessions per game.

The Lady Tigers will need to know all their lines when the

curtain opens at the Chamber of Commerce Shootout in

McKenzie, Tenn. on Friday, Oct. 31. Hosted by Bethel

University, CU finds itself facing a familiar foe in

perennial NAIA Tournament team, Xavier (La.)

University. Campbellsville beat the Golden Nuggets in

last year's NAIA Tournament Round of 16, 59-55. They

tip at 7 p.m. (ET).

Following an 18-hour rest, Campbellsville will face a

quick turnaround opponent in Harris-Stowe State College,

starting the season with back-to-back games for the first

time in Colvin's tenure.

CU returns home for a six-game stretch that includes three

MSC opponents, the conference opener being St.

Catharine on Thursday, Nov. 13. The schedule includes 14

home/away tilts with conference foes and 15 non-

conference opponents that will include Carroll and

Westminister colleges and the University of Montana-

Western — all in the Las Vegas Shootout Dec-18-20.

There will also be eight match-ups with schedule newcom-

ers Fisk (Tenn.) home/away, Reinhardt (Ga.), Asbury

(Ky.), Bluefield State College (W.Va.), MidAmerica

Nazarene (Kan.) and College of St. Joseph (Vt.).

“We play an non-conference schedule loaded with talented

teams,” said Colvin. “Then, as always. the Mid-South will

be a grind game-in and game-out.”

2013—2014

STORY BY RICHARD ROBARDS Madison Clements' mom may have expressed it best. "This has been so much fun, I just don't want it to stop." We all know it did stop, though, but what a great story it is. This isn't the Bible, so David didn't beat Goliath. The Lady Tigers took six-time national champion Oklahoma City to the brink of defeat on Saturday, only to fall 79-76.

They hung in mostly with their hearts.

Ginger Colvin and her assistant, Miranda Denney, escorted this team all over creation to produce the unexpected, if not improbable, 32-4 season. They were in Hawaii, Nashville, St. Louis and all over the tough-as-nails Mid-South Conference.

Senior Katie Allen helped CU compile a 107-31 record over her four-year career. Redshirt senior Hayley Hellyer can tip her mortar board at 140-34.

Even before school started, some of us armchair quarterbacks were wondering from where the offense would come. After all, CU had lost its two leading scorers to graduation. No problem. The team led the league in seven offensive categories.

A three-year assist machine suddenly became a shooter and some of the youngster players grew up to allow the Lady Tigers to lead 14 of the 26 statistical categories mapped by the Mid-South. Ellen Sholtes drove to the basket and got fouled at a record pace, Mary Jehlik took her string-bean body to the arc where she surprised many an opponent with her range. Hellyer came off an early-season disabled list to take more charges than anyone on the team. The Lady Tigers were hard to scout and even harder to figure out. Seven players led the team in scoring in one or more games and eight players were within just a few points of having an identical scoring average on a team that also led the league at 81.2 points per game. The most telling statistic, though, may have been the assists. They rewarded each other 621 times, more than any other squad in the MSC.

I can't get the bench's euphoria out of my mind the night Caroline Owen drained her ninth 3 to break a program record for those long-range bombs. Her teammates were happier for her than she was for herself.

You can what-if and second guess your way to Brookside Cemetery. The disappointment may linger for a few days, but what coach would want to be leading a team that ho-hummed an Elite Eight loss?

The Lady Tigers are coached to learn more than just basketball. The importance of planning, loyalty, preparation, determination, dedication and teamwork are in their DNA.

Sixty-six percent of the Lady Tigers eligible for conference academic awards were honored this season. And, five players received NAIA Scholar Athlete status.

They're way smarter than the people assigned to cover them.

CU is one of the Top 8 teams in the NAIA. They won the Mid-South Conference regular season and tournament titles. I say congratulations. I know the rest of you will agree.

The Powell Athletic Center has served as home for the Lady Tigers since the program began in 1975. Since then, the Lady Tigers have accumulated a home court record of 434 wins and 94 losses for an amazing 82%

win percentage. The Powell Gym has gone through many facelifts and renovations during it existence; most recently, the floor was sanded down, refinished, and repainted for the beginning of the 2013-2014 season.

The Lady Tiger locker room also underwent a face lift during the summer of 2013. The locker room features 17 completely refurbished wood lockers with bench seating as well as brand new

laminate flooring. Besides its practical functions, the locker room also serves as a nice landing spot

in-between classes for the Lady Tigers. Players can come in and lounge on the leather couch,

watch TV, nap, or study.
