WORKING FOR YOUDear Friends and Colleagues,
Thank you for all of the support you have invested in SAEM Foundation over the years. As you know, SAEM Foundation was started by academicians, for academicians, to improve the emergency care of patients through
research and scientific discovery. As a young foundation, we have had many growing pains, and this past year has been a time of maturity for us. With you, our stakeholders, in mind, we have made many positive changes to the operations and infrastructure of the SAEM Foundation, which we plan to continue improving upon in the coming year.
The SAEM Foundation had two main goals to accomplish in 2013-2014: Improve our communication to you and create an infrastructure that accurately and efficiently records your gifts and allows us
to report back to you on your status. So far, we have made great strides in these areas.
I hope you have noticed this progress, as the purpose is to keep you informed and show you the value of your contributions both monetarily and in time and leadership. We truly appreciate each gift you give. We know you have many causes to support, and we are thankful you have chosen to invest in the future of your specialty through your SAEM Foundation.
Please continue to watch for commu-nications from us in all formats, and remember to “like” us on Facebook so you can get updates in your newsfeed!
Thank you,
Cherri D. Hobgood, MDPast Chair, SAEM Foundation

IMPROVING THE EMERGENCY CARE OF PATIENTSThe SAEM Foundation uses your gifts
to improve the quality of emergency department patient care by advancing the science of emergency medicine. It does this by funding a variety of grants, ranging from career development awards to
research project awards, annually. These grant awards cover a wide range of topics, including basic, clinical, and translational science, health services research, and education research. Two separate analyses have demonstrated that these grants,
funded by your donations to the SAEM Foundation, result in increased academic productivity in the form of subsequent grant funding and publications. The following investigators were selected in 2014:

JOHN PATRICK HARAN, MDUNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS MEDICAL SCHOOL, WORCESTER, MA
2014-2016 Research Training Grant - $100,000“Cytokine Responses in Patients Presenting with an Acute Respiratory Illness”
This two-year career development award will support Dr. Haran as he establishes himself as an independent clinician-scientist pursuing original research investigations directed toward the use of novel biomarker panels in the diagnosis and management of acute respiratory infections. This award will support his pursuit of a rigorous mentoring and research training. His study will specifically work to identify a cytokine panel which will distinguish between bacterial pneumonia and viral respiratory infections and to correlate the serum concentrations of cytokines with severity of illness and outcomes in patients with bacterial pneumonia.
CHRISTOPHER HICKS, MD, MEDST. MICHAEL’S HOSPITAL, TORONTO, ON
2014 Education Research Grant - $10,000“Preparing for High-Acuity Events: Stress Inoculation Simulation-Based Training”
This one-year education research project award will focus on investigating the impact of stress response on clinical performance during acute events. Specifically, this study consists of the adaptation and evaluation of a stress inoculation training (SIT) intervention for emergency medicine and surgery residents. The stress responses and clinical performance in simulation will then be assessed.
MARGARET K. SANDE, MD, MSUNIVERSITY OF COLORADO, DENVER, CO
2014-2016 Education Fellowship Grant - $100,000“Integration of an Audience Response System into Simulation-Based Training:
An Educational Technology Enhancement”
This two-year career development award will support Dr. Sande as she develops into an educational researcher with a specific interest in simulation research. Her goal is to enhance observer engagement while watching a simulation case by integrating audience response into simulation-based instruction. This novel approach allows trainees to remain engaged during observational periods, and Dr. Sande hypothesizes that integrating this technology into simulation-based instruction will be positively received by trainees, allow instructors to more readily identify knowledge gaps, heighten engagement amongst observers, and ultimately lead to increased knowledge retention when compared to sessions observed without audience response system integration.
MISSION / VISIONThe mission of the SAEM Foundation is to improve the emergency
care of patients through medical research and scientific
discovery; to enhance research capabilities within emergency
medicine; and to help emergency physicians develop the skills to
become successful investigators.

SAEM FOUNDATION’S CELEBRATION EVENT 2014
Our academic EM leaders founded
the SAEM Foundation in 2008. The
goal was to fulfill SAEM’s mission to
lead the advancement of academic
EM through research and education.
With an initial endowment of $1
million, the Foundation Board of
Trustees has diligently cared for and
nurtured your gifts. Each donation
you make is multiplied through
investments in order to provide
significant funding for research and
educational training for you - the
academicians.
GRANT EXPENSESIn 2013, the SAEM Foundation had to reduce
the amount awarded for the Research Training
Grants, Institutional Research Training Grants,
and Education Fellowship Grants to ensure the
funds don’t run out in the coming years.
When we reach the $10M goal, we will be
able to fund the grant portfolio (based on
current returns) and provide additional
research and education.

AUGUST 2014
