PRESS RELEASE Henry Schein UK Holdings Ltd. Centurion Close Gillingham Business Park Gillingham ME8 0SB England HENRY SCHEIN UK CELEBRATES PROGRESS OF INNOVATIVE ORAL HEALTH PROGRAMME AT WEST MINSTER PRIMARY SCHOOL Programme Helps Children Learn Importance of Proper Oral Hygiene Practices Gillingham, 08 May 2014 Henry Schein UK, in partnership with Colgate UK, announced today that it joined yesterday the children of West Minster Primary School in Sheerness, UK, to celebrate the progress of an innovative oral health programme called Helping Kids Smile. Launched in October 2013, Helping Kids Smile teaches students of West Minster the importance of proper oral hygiene practices and provides free oral health assessments for children in underserved communities. As part of the programme, Henry Schein UK and Colgate UK have donated toothbrushes and toothpaste to the students, as well as dental education materials. Over the course of the programme, the children have improved their oral health habits. Samantha Mackay, teacher for Reception children at the school said there had been a very high percentage of children take up the programme that has become so much a part of their day that any minor change to their routine results in a chorus of “But we haven’t cleaned our teeth yet!“ from the children. Joining the children for the programme’s celebration at the West Minster school will be Simon Gambold, Managing Director of Henry Schein UK’s dental and medical business; Sharon Biant, a local dentist; Samantha Mackay, Reception Class Teacher and Steven Connors, Executive Head Teacher. Programmes similar to the one held at the West Minster Primary School are planned throughout the year at other locations throughout the UK as part of the larger Helping Kids Smile effort. “We are delighted to be ‘Helping Kids Smile’ in the UK through this important partnership with our customers and supplier partners,” Gambold said. “Many months ago, we provided educational materials on the importance of good oral health and the basic tools of oral health success Colgate toothbrushes and toothpaste to the children of the West Minster School. Since then, the children have been brushing daily and learning lessons in the classroom that will help them form lifelong good oral health habits. We look forward to expanding this programme across the UK in the future.” Helping Kids Smile was launched in 2013 as part of Henry Schein Cares, the global corporate social responsibility program of Henry Schein, Inc., the parent company of Henry Schein UK. The programme recognizes the critical oral health issue that early tooth decay presents to primary school children in underserved communities within the United Kingdom. During oral health education sessions, children, with the aid of a lead classroom teacher, learn proper oral health practices, such as maintaining a consistent brushing schedule, using proper brushing techniques, and eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet. Clinical dental assessments are provided to children by local dental practitioners every six months over two years to determine immediate treatment needs and to track the progress of the programme as an early intervention model for promoting oral health. These routine preventive services will reduce the need for children to undergo complicated and expensive procedures in the future. -more-
