Dear friends,

In 2013, Batsheva continued its creative momentum. The pinnacle was Ohad Naharin's new creation, The Hole, in which he proved once again his innovative choreographic voice. This fascinating, unique creation won the audience’s heart and also received warm critical praise. In addition, within Batsheva's commitment to encourage and nurture emerging talent, the Ensemble presented Shula by young choreographer Danielle Agami, and this piece, too, won great success.Approximately 94,000 people attended the Company's performances during 2013. The Company toured extensively around the world and held 51 performances for 36,000 spectators abroad, strengthening the Company's international reputation. Once again the Company was an excellent ambassador for Israel. The Company pursued its social and educational activity in Israel. In its series of morning school shows, a tradition Batsheva has maintained for over a decade, the Ensemble performed for 10,000 students in cities across Israel. As a reflection of the Company's artistic excellence, an administrative excellence has also developed. The administrative team worked tirelessly to provide support and for the dancers to reach their best. A special effort was put developing tools and abilities for development of necessary resources for the Company's activity and development. All this, along with responsible and meticulous financial management, enabled the Company to complete 2013 in sound financial shape.During the past year, we renewed activities to realize the vision of establishing a new home for Batsheva that will suit its special needs and will hold the large audiences who wish to attend the Company's performances. In association with Stockholm’s Magasin 3 Museum of Contemporary Art along with renowned architect David Adjaye and the Tel Aviv municipality, the Company conducted an initial feasibility study for the creation of an arts center in the old central bus station in Neve Sha’anan, as the heart of a municipal initiative for urban renewal in the neighborhood. We will continue promoting the subject in 2014 with the anticipation that the municipality will be an actual partner and thus increase the chances of the center’s construction and prosperity. On the threshold of its jubilee year, with enormous artistic achievements behind it, Batsheva is entering a new, exciting era.

Sincerely,

Ittamar GivtonChairman of the Board of Directors

Dear friends,

In the continuous flow of processes and progress, the call to summarize the year offers an opportunity to pause and look back.

2013 was full of significant creative processes in the studio and warm dialogue with the audience both in Israel and abroad. It was a year of evolution and profundity, with many moments of beauty and quality.

The year's accomplishments belong to everyone – the dancers who shone in their work; the artistic team, the administration, and the technical crew who devoted themselves to creation with passion and inspired joy; the public council members and the board of directors who accompany us with involvement and love; the benefactors who believe in us and who enable us to excel; and the wide audience who supports us in our city and throughout Israel and the world.

In 2014, the Company is marking its fiftieth anniversary. This moment of annual review calls for a longer look back – and recognition – from where we stand today, of the glorious dynasty of dancers and choreographers who have made Batsheva over the generations.

To the future,

Ohad NaharinArtistic Director

CrEATION / STuDIO / STAGE

In 2013, Batsheva produced two new works: The Hole by Ohad Naharin and Shula by young choreographer Danielle Agami, who was invited to create for the Batsheva Ensemble.

In addition, the Company staged works from its repertoire, mounted Uprising by Hofesh Shechter, and presented evenings of the dancers’ own creations.

CrEATION / STuDIO / STAGE

-- "What sticks out in this language of movement is the contrast between the movements in which the energy weakens, almost evaporating into some sort of inner spiritual gaze, and movements in which the energy that has concentrated inside generates sharp and rapid movements like the stroke of a guillotine… It is an intriguing performance with an unresolved ending, as if the Naharin virus entered to activate it and left it with a characteristic feeling of an unclosed circle..." (ruth Eshel, Ha'aretz)

-- "The fact that its unique location and space dictate interpretation, makes "The Hole" a piece that enables Naharin's creative characteristics to stand out, in addition to laying the foundations for a new movement language… a terrifyingly crazy, haunted, and beautiful world." (Tal Levin, Achbar Online, 10.4.2013)

--"Because it's a piece full of surprises and at times heart-touching, because you can't take your eyes off the Batsheva dancers, and also because the ending can be perceived as very optimistic." (Yael Efrati and Marat Parkhomovsky, “Ten Best Dance and Theater Performances of the Year,” TimeOut, 24.12.2013)

The Hole by Ohad Naharin and the Batsheva DancersWorld Premiere: April 2013, Varda Studio, Suzanne Dellal Centre, Tel Aviv

In April 2013 Batsheva premiered The Hole by Ohad Naharin, a new piece created especially for the intimate Varda Studio at the company's home in the Suzanne Dellal Centre. The studio became a hole of happening within a unique architectural setting that enabled an up-close view of the dancers moving throughout the space.

The Hole won great audience response as well as critical acclaim.

Shula by Danielle AgamiWorld Premiere: June 2013, Suzanne Dellal Centre, Tel Aviv Danielle Agami, veteran Company dancer and current independent choreographer, was invited by Ohad Naharin to create an original piece for the female Batsheva Ensemble dancers. The creation process was significant, enriching, and inspiring for the dancers who devoted themselves to working with Agami and delivered a superb stage performance.

Uprising by Hofesh Shechter

Hofesh Shechter's 2006 work, established the choreographer’s name in the international dance arena. Shechter, a Batsheva alumnus, contributed this work to the Batsheva Ensemble whose seven male dancers provided a gorgeous interpretation and performance.

Sadeh21 by Ohad Naharin and Batsheva Dancers Batsheva Dance Company won the Performance Prize for a Large Company from the Minister of Culture and Sport (2013) for the performance of Sadeh21, Ohad Naharin's 2011 work. In the past two years, the Company has staged Sadeh21 in Tel Aviv and all over the world.

--"Inside the same movement gushing from within, are entwined passages that parody the oriental representation of the east as the dancers spread their arms aside, coiling like snakes. I find these dance fragments marvelous in their combination of cultures and statement, admirably executed by the Ensemble dancers."(ruth Eshel, Ha'aretz, 11.12.2013)

--"Once again Ohad Naharin has demonstrated that dance reflects thought… the work begins with a series of solos, which share the same rare emotional force… we can simply allow the work's deep sensuality to carry us… Without conforming his style and way of thinking in any way, Ohad Naharin’s oeuvre continues to provoke reflection and involvement and... to bewitch."(Sonia Schoonejans, Ballet Magazine 2000, France, June 2013)

--"It might be the precise dosage between dancers who've been following Naharin for a long time, and new dancers who injected their individuality into the existing condition, but have already managed to absorb the choreographer's language. They are strong, stretched to the limit, tuned like instruments in a legendary orchestra, remarkably precise, and it's beautiful as a dream." (Merav Yudilevitch, Ynet, 27.5.2011)

--"The bursting physicality in Shechter's men-dance is invigorated by the passion for purposeful action. The young, energetic Ensemble dancers cross the stage back and forth, running on all fours, gliding with bottoms virtually touching the floor, as the hands push the surface. roaming through vast imaginary spaces and territories…" (ruth Eshel, Ha'aretz, 11.12.2013)

Dancers Create

This year, celebrating a decade, the Company produced its traditional Dancers Create evenings, which included 23 short new works.

Supported by the Michael Sela Fund for Cultivation of Young Artists at Batsheva, this project provides the dancers a framework for creation and production, and gives the audience an opportunity to become acquainted with the Company dancers' creative, vigorous, and varied talents.

In intimate studio performances, the Company staged the work of Company dancer Bobbi Smith, Arrowed (created for the 2012 dancers' workshops), which was composed of a series of interviews written, choreographed, and directed by Smith.

--"… the marvelous honesty with which both dancers-actors-creators deliver the questions, the answers, and the minute yet fantastically precise movement, create a small and magical performance, above all, intimate and moving."(Dana Shalev, Erev-rav, 27.12.2013)

--"Ohad (Naharin) attracts the best dancers in the world… I've never seen such a combination of beauty, energy and technique." (Mikhail Baryshnikov, from an interview in Ha'aretz, November 2011)

--"For me the Batsheva Company is a real national treasure, and I hope Israelis understand the power it has around the world." (Benjamin Millepied, incoming director of the Paris Opera Ballet, in an interview with Dani Spector, Yediot Aharonot, 29.1.2014)

--"I was blown away by the energy and magnetism of the dancers. The relationship duet piece took my breath away. Actually, they all did. Then the houselights were brought up and the dancers came out into the audience... The next thing you know I was dancing on stage with the Batsheva company. From a lonely walk, sad at leaving my lovely daughter tomorrow, to madly dancing onstage. It was so much fun and unexpected!!!"(From a thank you letter to the Company, Lola Broomberg, uSA, 31.12.2013)

--"… the Company's dancers demonstrate a spectacular technical ability, strong stage presence, and intense expression; their 'groove' and unique personalities create great interest. They illustrate Ohad Naharin's choreography with clarity, perfection, passion, love, and commitment. They comprehend the work's dynamics and its transitions – from the most minimalist whisper-like movements, to the body's eruption in space which gives a sensation of a motional celebration. The dancers demonstrate an ability to move from one state to the other, to move swiftly and with astonishing accuracy – and on the other hand control the adagio movements with grace, sensitivity and confidence. They create a feeling of tension and curiosity even in the most abstract and slowest parts, and watching them is sheer pleasure…" (rena Gluck – Chairman of the Prize Committee, Galia Gat, and Nira Triffon, 2012-13 Israeli Dance Awards Ceremony).

--"… The dancers soar, contract, roll, flick, shake, all with split-second timing in ways rarely seen before. All 18 are phenomenal. They risk everything and hold back nothing. Their bodies are sublimely fluid, with magnificent upper body reach. But it is their absolute unflagging energy that takes one's breath away…" (Dominion Post, New Zealand, 22.2.14)

Batsheva Dance Company attracts excellent dancers from Israel and the world – as many as two hundred local and international dancers auditioned in 2013. 36 dancers worked in the studio throughout the year, accompanied by the artistic staff, to carry out the intensive work schedule.

Courses for Young Dance Students

In 2013, nearly 200 young dance students participated in courses that Batsheva holds annually, during which young dancers and dance students from all over Israel get a chance to become closely acquainted with the Batsheva Dance Company’s work processes. The goal of these courses is to refine the students' toolbox and to develop a high level of professional abilities.

The courses for young dance students are managed by Batsheva Ensemble rehearsal Director Hillel Kogan, who is also a dancer and independent choreographer in his own right.

BATSHEVA'S ArCHIVE PrOJECT BATSHEVA'S ArCHIVE PrOJECT

Initiated in August 2012, the Batsheva Archive Project is dedicated to researching and mapping the Company's historical materials since its foundation in 1964, and to assembling and consolidating them into a comprehensive collection that is accessible and user-friendly for both the general public and researchers. 2013 was dedicated to exhaustive research and mapping. The Company's repertoire list was composed, including a listing of 360 dances made for Batsheva along with credits for all creators and accompanying photographs. In addition, a list of all the people who were associated with the Company throughout the years was created.

Exciting materials were deposited in the archive: graphic designer Dan reisinger gave the first poster he designed for the Company in 1964; Emanuel Kipnis deposited the prints he made for the Friends Association in the 1980s; and Noam Sheriff, Tzvi Avni, and other composers deposited scores written for the Company, some of them handwritten. We received photograph collections by Yoram rubin, Shosh Kormush, Dudu Bengad, and Danny Binstead as well as permission to use photos by Yakov Agor and Mula Eshet's collection. We received masters of Company sound files from the troupe’s first 12 years from the first Company soundman, Akiva Melamed. The caricatures and drawings by Ze'ev (the pen name of Yaakov Farkash) – made over two decades of watching Company performances – were traced at the Israeli Cartoon Museum's archive and were added to the Company's archive as well.

We scanned documents regarding the first international tours from the National Archive as well as a variety of debates in the Knesset Archive. In collaboration with the National Library of Israel and the Beit Ariela Dance Archive, we scanned all of the Company’s posters and programs from all 50 years, deposited by Company people who came with bags, envelopes, and boxes containing additional assorted resources: newspaper clippings, personal letters, sketch books, and many photographs of dances on stage and backstage.

We sorted, identified, and converted dance and rehearsal footage from the Israeli Archive at the Jerusalem Cinematheque, Herzliya Studios, and private individuals.

In total, thus far we have scanned 4,000 documents, 12,000 photographs and negatives, and 120 films in different formats that underwent restoration and digitization. The archive materials are deposited at the Israeli Dance Library at Beit Ariela, our partner for the Project that took upon itself the continuation of the management of the archive as a separate collection in the dance archive.

The Archive project is conducted with the support of Mifal HaPayis Council for Arts and Culture and the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality.
