Warhawk Soccer 2013 Season Coaching Staff Meet the Warhawks 2012 Recap Record Book This is AUM

Losing just three seniors from a team that fi nished 18-4-2 and advanced to the NAIA Na- onal Tournament quarterfi nals last season,

the Auburn Montgomery men’s soccer team is poised to make another deep run in the na onal tournament in 2013. “I really think that if we had won the quarterfi nal game, we were primed to make a run at the na onal championship,” head coach Wulf Koch said. “Ul mately, we fell a li le short, but it was s ll a great year. Our goal entering last season was to get back to the na onal tournament and see how far we go. We accomplished that, but now we can say we experienced fi rsthand what it takes to compete at a na onal level.” AUM returns 14 le erwinners from a squad that won the Southern States Athle c Confer-ence Tournament, as well as advance to the NAIA Tournament. A er winning the fi rst two rounds, the Warhawks dropped their match in the quarterfi nals to MidAmerica Nazarene University, 1-0. “That defeat really mo vated the guys,” Koch said. “They realized that they were very close to reaching the ul mate goal and achieving something that has never been done before by an AUM soccer team. That drive carried over into our training during the spring. We played and trained with intensity and with a purpose. I also think that carried into the classroom, where we were very suc-cessful academically.”

Highligh ng the returners are senior captains Vignir Johannesson and Taian Souza. Johannesson earned First-Team NAIA All-American honors in 2012, fi nishing the year with 92 saves in 22 matches, while allowing only an average of 1.063 goals per game. Souza garnered Second-Team All-SSAC ac-colades and anchored a defensive unit that allowed only 25 goals in 24 matches. Despite losing a pair of All-Americans in

defender Ma as Aristegui and forward Agust Arnarson, the Warhawks also return junior second-team all-conference selec on Elvar Sigurdsson, as well as all-freshman team members Sebas an Wladyko, Niklas Hunold and Alexander Neubarth. AUM also returns senior starters Chris an Holthaus and Vitor Silva. “We had a good core group coming in last year and now all those guys are coming back,” Koch said. “They know what it takes to get to the next level and they are hungry to get there.” With the pieces coming back Koch insists the program will not back away from their expecta ons. “We are not going to be shy about sta ng our ul mate goal as a na onal champion-ship,” Koch said. “We have the pieces in place and the talent to accomplish that. We accept that anything less is not good enough.”

The Goalkeepers The goalkeeper posi on returns Johannes-son as the incumbent starter in net for the Warhawks, following one of the most com-plete seasons by an AUM keeper in school history. He tallied 10 shutouts, one shy of the school record, while surrendering just 24 goals on the year. He posted a 15-4-2 record in goal. “What else can you say about Viggy,” Koch said of the All-American. “He is a key piece to team our success, because the ten guys in front of him know it is alright to make a mistake. They know there is a very good goal-keeper who can bail them out and I think that gives the team enough confi dence to take some chances.” Although returning Johannesson, the War-hawks did lose depth at the posi on following the gradua on of Bosko Kovacevic. “I think Bosko would have probably started at 99 of 100 other schools as the number one goalkeeper,” Koch said. “For him to backup Viggy for two years the way he did, with such class and never complained, surely helped the team chemistry.” Filling the void le by Kovacevic will be a pair of freshman in German Phillip Hitpass and former Pra ville High School standout Stephen Ingram.Ingram has a very high ceiling and can benefi t from working with Viggy and Philip. “Phillip is here to be a contributor and not to just sit on the bench,” Koch said of Hitpass. “We want him to push Viggy as hard as pos-sible and maybe even put him on the bench. He played at a very high level and trained with some tremendous goalkeepers in Germany. He is the epitome of a German goalkeeper. He is big, has big hands, is well educated tac -cally and is technically clean.” “Stephen has a very high ceiling and will certainly benefi t from working with Viggy and Phillip,” Koch said of Ingram. “I look forward to watching him develop, but his success will depend on his willingness to work and his

con nued improvement.”

The Defenders Replacing Aristegui will arguably be the top ques on for the Warhawks entering the 2013 season. The defensive unit will also be asked to replace Alex Vignisson, a starter in 22 games a year ago. “Ma as was probably the most tac cally astute player we had on the team in terms of reading the game, stepping to intercept passes and closing lanes,” Koch said. “He was also very dangerous going forward and in set pieces. He and Axel are going to be diffi cult players to replace.” AUM will return three signifi cant con-tributors on defense, led by Souza, who will provide solid play and excep onal leadership. I can’t say enough about Taian,” Koch said. “He comes to work and does his job day in and day out. He is inked in the lineup as a right back and defends like crazy, but also gets involved in the a ack. He makes penetra ng runs forward. He is very good in one on one and servicing the ball. He is also a threat to score.” The Warhawks also welcome back sopho-mores Hunold and Neubarth, both of whom Koch expects to take on increased roles. “Niklas will be our starter at defensive midfi elder,” Koch said. “He did such a great job with that last year, si ng in front of the center back and providing them protec on. Alex won himself the le back posi on in the spring. He is a le -footed player and can make runs up and down the touch line. He is great at servicing the ball and is a threat going forward.” Adding to the depth at the posi on will be senior Eyjolfur Eyjolfsson and sophomores Daniel Grobelny and Mathis Kroeger. “Eyjo can play center back and defensive midfi eld for us,” Koch said. “In either posi on, we know he can get the job done and will give

us maximum eff ort.” “Daniel became a stalwart for us last sea-son even though he started the season late last year,” Koch said. “I think he has the po-ten al to be an All-American. He is athle cally gi ed, tall, strong in the air and can distribute the ball out of the back. I think he’s going to be a major piece in our puzzle this year.” “Mathis can play the defensive midfi eld or center back if we need him to,” Koch said. “He is the type of guy that can li the team with his enthusiasm and team a tude. He’s also the type of player that can go into a game and there’s nothing lost.” Addi onally, Koch is also excited to see how three freshmen will fi t into the mix among the defensive unit. Joining the War-hawks for their fi rst season are Tim Kayser, Zach Sco and Grant Dukes. Kayser originally signed with AUM last year, but suff ered a knee injury last summer in Germany. Sco and Dukes are both local products, having played at Alabama Chris an Academy and LAMP High School, respec vely. “Tim is a very quick, very technically sound and can put the ball from point A to point B on a dime,” Koch said. “If he is fi t, I can see him being the right back, allowing us to move Taian centrally, but it all depends on his fi tness and how he recovers from his knee injury.” “Zach and Grant will benefi t from being ex-posed to our more experienced players,” Koch said. “It will li their talent rather quickly. Zach is quick and a hard-nosed tackler and Grant is a good athlete. The transi on they will face from Alabama soccer to our level is a big step, but we feel like they both have a lot of upside.”

The Midfi elders In the midfi eld, the Warhawks return four key contributors in Silva, Holthaus, Sigurdsson and Wladyko. Last season, the four players

combined for 76 starts, 22 goals and 16 as-sists. Silva tallied three of those goals, but has earned the respect of his head coach thanks to his blue-collar work ethic. “Vitor started 21 of 22 games and is just so solid,” Koch said. “He is not a fl ashy player, but he just does his job day-in-day-out.” Holthaus missed 13 games last season due to injury, but scored once and assisted on four other goals in his 11 matches. “My wish for Chris an is to stay healthy and play an en re season,” Koch said. “If he can do that, he will be very hard to take out of the lineup. His game is very rhythm orientat-ed, which works nicely since we are a rhythm-orientated team. He is good at changing the point of a ack and fi nding open teammates which fi ts the way we want to play.” Sigurdsson was a key component in the at-tack last season, ranking second on the team with 12 goals, while adding a team-leading seven assists. For the second consecu ve year, he tallied be er than 70 shots, pos ng a team-best 88 in 2012. Wladyko added six goals and a pair of assists, while a emp ng 57 shots as a freshman “There aren’t enough good things to say about Elvar and Sebas an,” Koch said. “They are true talents and great young men, who will play vital part in our success this year. Elvar had a great summer in Iceland and I am hopeful he can con nue that here. He has the ability to score goals in bundles and will be expected to do so again this year. Sebas an is a strong player and is extremely technical. He is dynamic with his free kicks and set pieces. He and Elvar will carry a majority of the play in the middle of the fi eld.” Adding to the depth at the posi on is ju-nior Zack Chanthongphio, as well a freshman Brandon Perez and Philipp Zilles. Chan-thongphio also has experience playing as a defender. “Zack has played at right back some last season when Taian went down due last season,” Koch said. “He is a versa le guy, who con nues to be ready for whatever role we ask of him. Zack will be a key reserve for our team this year.” “Brandon has the poten al to be a good player and has a very high ceiling,” Koch said. “His success will depend on how quickly he gets acclimated to the speed of the game.” “Philipp comes from a soccer family and played at a high level in Germany,” Koch said. “He is a fi t player that can run forever. He is great going forward and fi nding the open man.”

The Forwards The biggest ques on mark on the War-hawks is who will be the lead goal scorer. AUM lost a pair of players at the posi on in senior Angel Gonzalez and freshman Agust Arnarson, one to gradua on and the other to transfer. The duo combined for 22 goals, including a team-best by Arnarson en route to

Second-Team NAIA All-American honors. “Angel was here for two years and had several games where he came in and gave us a major li , most notably in the conference semifi nals against Southern Wesleyan,” Koch said. “He was a streaky player, but the thing that I will miss most about Angel was his a -tude. He was always upbeat and worked hard. Agust had a great year with our program and will leave a big hole to fi ll.” AUM returns two players, senior Cesar Kestring and junior Dagur Jonsson, at the forward posi on, while also welcoming a pair of talented transfers in sophomores Alan Harwell and Yannic Fallack. “Cesar worked extremely hard during the spring to return from a knee injury,” Koch said. “He played a limited role last fall, but it will be interes ng to see how he responds when he is healthy. Dagur is a hard worker, who could be a key reserve for our team this season.” Harwell joins the Warhawks following a year at UAB, but has a scoring pedigree fol-lowing a standout prep career in which he scored 127 goals locally at Brew Tech. Fallack spent last season playing at NCAA Division I Rider University of the Metro Atlan c Athle c Conference. “Alan is going to give us another dimension we didn’t have with his speed up top,” Koch said. “He is so strong and knows how to put the ball in the net, which are three unbeliev-able traits to have. He is also quick, which will allow us to play the ball over the top and just let him run onto it and force other defenses to play deep.”

“Yannic is a player we recruited two years ago but he opted to go to Rider,” Koch said. “Technically, he is a very gi ed player. I hope he can be a strong fi nisher for us either up top or from the midfi eld.”

HEAD COACH WULF-DIETER KOCHSeventh Season as Men’s Coach | 79-32-11 (.693) | Maine-Fort Kent, 1989

The face of the AUM men’s soccer program since 2007, Wulf-Dieter Koch enters his seventh season at the helm of the men’s soccer program and 10th overall at AUM. During his tenure with the Warhawks, Koch has posted a 79-32-11 overall mark with the men’s program, a er compiling a 48-19-3 record in three seasons coaching the women’s team. During his collegiate career, Koch has posted a record of 190-135-22 as a men’s coach, while adding 71 wins as a women’s coach. He sports a career win percentage of .581 and has led helped seven teams to the NAIA Na onal Tournament. Under Koch’s leadership, AUM has fi nished the season ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll fi ve mes, includ-ing last season when the Warhawks won the Southern States Athle c Conference Tournament and advanced to the NAIA Na onal Tournament Quarterfi nals. He also led AUM to the 2007 NAIA Region XIII tournament championship and to the NAIA Na onal Tournament Final Four in his fi rst season. Last season, Koch guided the Warhawks to an 18-4-2, with their four losses coming to the four na onal tourna-ment semifi nalists. Three AUM players earned NAIA All-American honors, including goalkeeper Vignir Johannesson,

who was named a fi rst-team selec on. Addi onally, fi ve student-athletes earned all-conference honors, four were named to the SSAC All-Freshman team and six were selected to the league’s All-Academic Team. The Warhawks faced 11 teams ranked or among the others receiving votes in 2012 and responded with a 6-4-1 record. The 18 victories by the team, 11 of which were shutouts, were the most by a team since the 2005 squad went 23-2 and reached the Final Four. In the classroom, the men’s soccer program was equally successful. The Warhawks posted a team grade point average of 3.11, including a 3.26 in the 2013 Spring semester. Three student-athletes were named NAIA Scholar Athletes, while Chris an Holthaus earned AUM’s nomina on for the SSAC Honor Student-Athlete award. During the 2011 season, Koch led the Warhawks to a 12-5-4 record. AUM reached the fi nals of the SSAC tournament, and were only a penalty shootout away from winning the conference and returning to the NAIA tournament. Five players earned spots on SSAC all-conference teams, including two fi rst-team selec ons. Men’s soccer also con nued to have success academically, with 10 players making the SSAC All-Academic team. At AUM, the team received the Team G.P.A. award, given to the program which has the highest average overall for the year. With a 3.19 team G.P.A., it was the second straight year they had earned the top spot. In 2010, the Warhawks struggled with injuries, inexperience and a diffi cult schedule, pos ng the fi rst losing season in Koch’s me as head coach at AUM. The 2013-14 academic year marks the 14th year for Auburn Montgomery athle cs compe ng as a member of the Southern States Athle c Conference (SSAC). In Novem-ber of 2012, the conference announced an expansion and now showcases 16 member ins tu ons located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsors 15 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, so ball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and fi eld and men’s and women’s golf. The conference staff features Commissioner Mike Hall, Assistant Commissioner Ka e Bright and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athle cs Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athle c Conference and remained so un l 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the offi cial name was again changed to the Southern States Athle c Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of compe on, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member ins tu ons. Since the conference’s incep on and affi lia on with the NAIA, 29 SSAC teams and 11 individuals have claimed na onal tles, while 27 teams have fi nished na onal runners-up. Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the Na onal Associa on of Intercollegiate Athle cs (NAIA) since 1975. In those 38 years, AUM has claimed 22 na onal champion-ships and six of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a na onal championship game.

The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a na onal organiza on with nearly 300 ins tu onal members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athle cs. Since its introduc on of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering fi rst-rate athle cs programs. The NAIA has con nuously affi rmed its commitment to equality by becoming the fi rst na onal organiza on to off er ins tu onal postsea-

son opportuni es to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow ins tu onal membership to historically black ins tu ons in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establish-ment of athle cs programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by suppor ng academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and ac vity as an opportunity to inten onally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the fi ve core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefi t of each individu-al. In addi on, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA ins tu on’s commitment to the ini a ve with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in compe on, academic focus, character recogni on and character promo on. For the third consecu ve year, AUM was one of 220 schools recognized as a Five Star ins tu on a er earning 73 points on a 100-point scale, a mark ed for the 75th-best total in the country.
