ELCOME TO THE 2013/14 SCHOOL YEAR Welcome back! I hope you all had a restful and re-energizing summer break. We have been busy during break with continued construction at the high school and I have to tell you that it is really coming together nicely. If you haven’t driven by the front entrance – or down Lakeview recently I highly recommend it – the building looks beautiful. Our staff has been working hard this summer, attending many different trainings to continue our own growth so we can provide the very best experience for your child. We are so fortunate to have such dedicated and caring staff members that are always willing to go the extra mile for the sake of our students. Just recently the Michigan Department of Education released the “scorecard” for all K-12 educational entities and we have a great deal to be proud of here in Saint Joseph. The MDE ranks all schools in a top to bottom statewide percentile rank and all of our schools ranked quite high. Actually, our high school was rated as a “reward” school – there were only 141 schools rated as high performing in this category! Our entire staff is looking forward to another fantastic year and wants to welcome you back on September 3rd! Superintendent, Ann M. elcometo the 2013/14 school year

Welcome back!

The Rachel’s Challenge programs are designed to liberate the inner desire to treat others with kindness and respect. The strategic, relational program content is based on the life and writ-ings of Rachel Scott. Shortly before her death she wrote, “I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show com-passion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go.”

The core component of Rachel’s Challenge is a spell-binding and impassioned school assembly that tells the story of Rachel Scott and inspires a desire for change among students. It is unique in that the assembly is followed up with student training, a per-manent school club and a com-munity presentation. While it strives to inspire campus and community-wide change, R a c h e l ’ s C h a l l e n g e starts with indi-vidual students who have been motivated to release their inner desire to treat others with respect.

The results have been a s t o u n d i n g . Representative

of thousands of schools is an elementary school in Texas that had 90% fewer disciplin-ary referrals in the months after a Rachel’s Challenge program was initiated.

A high school in Illinois expe-rienced 84% fewer out-of-school suspen-sions. Seventy-eight percent more students indicated they would definitely intervene in a bul-lying incident in their school after seeing Rachel’s

Challenge. Most significantly, in a recent 24 month period, Rachel’s Challenge received more than 450 emails from stu-dents who indicated they had changed their mind about tak-ing their own life after Rachel’s Challenge made their school a better and more caring place.

Rachel’s Challenge is com-ing to St. Joseph Public Schools for a middle school and high school assem-bly on September 24th.

The meetings will be held in the auditorium. Attendance at one of the meetings (last spring or upcoming) is required for stu-dents to be able to take home a laptop.

Coordinators of the 1:1 Partnership for Unlimited Learning, Bryan Parsons and Amy Dirlam, were extremely pleased with how the first semester of 1:1 computing went last school year. “The students demonstrated tremen-dous responsibility and care for the machines, and the teachers really embraced this new learn-ing environment,” Dirlam said.

This bootcamp style train-ing will cover topics such as digital citizenship, proper use and care of the computers, creating and saving projects, and general troubleshooting tips. Parents of incoming 6th graders who did not attend orientation last spring should plan to come to one of the 1:1 parent meetings that will be held on Wednesday, August 28th at 5:00 PM, or Wednesday, September 4th at 9:00 AM.

Parents were also extremely supportive of the program. “The survey results indicated that parents and students were pleased with the program over-all. Both parents and students agree that awareness of assign-ments, as well as access to assignments online, being one of the biggest benefits,” Parsons commented.

The 1:1 computing initiative has been heavily support-ed by the St. Joseph Public Schools Foundation, which has committed approximately $200,000.00 to the program.

The St. Joseph Public Schools 1:1 Computing Initiative, Partnership for Unlimited Learning, will begin its second year at Upton Middle School this fall. Returning 7th grad-ers will start the school year by being reissued the MacBook Air computers they received last January. Incoming 6th graders will participate in sev-eral training sessions before being issued their computers.
