Nicaragua Metro International, the world’s largest

international newspa-per, has expanded in Latin America by

launching a free daily newspaper in Nicara-gua. The newspaper was launched on Oct. 14 in the capital city

of Managua.

Metro is already the largest newspaper in Latin America with nearly 3.5 million

daily readers across Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Guate-mala, Colombia and

Puerto Rico.

“With newspapers and digital off er-ings in nine Latin

American markets, we now have a very strong footprint in the region and we

will continue to grow, not least in

digital media,” said Per Mikael Jensen, CEO and president. “I’m very happy to

A Dorchester woman pleaded not guilty yesterday to alleg-edly stabbing her boyfriend during a fight last weekend.

Police responded to a domestic incident at about 12:40 p.m. Sunday at 400 Savin Hill Ave.

Hackathon team pumps innovation from the heart

Doctors from Brigham and Women’s Hospital teamed up with engineers from the MIT Media Lab last month at the hospital’s inaugural iHub Hack-athon to try and solve a press-ing medical problem facing heart patients.

About 100 clinicians, scien-tists and programmers pitched projects to a panel of judges in the hope of getting funding for further development.

Within 48 hours, the win-ning team, “Ring Leader,” came up with a prototype for a wear-able ring that can transmit a patient’s heart rate from their body to an app. A physician can then remotely review electro-cardiogram — also known as EKG — readings and other rel-evant clinical metrics.

The team used a 3-D printer to create the device, which is meant to be worn on a finger.

The standard of care for heart disease, which is a lead-ing cause of death worldwide, is currently for doctors to order expensive stress tests to assess a patient’s risk for a heart attack. Creators believe the ring would gather accurate data in a conve-nient and cost-effective way.

“Often times I find I don’t need to order [the stress test], but we order it because we have no way of monitoring pa-tients at home,” said Dr. Rajat Gupta, Brigham and Women’s cardiologist and Ring Leader member. “It would be better if

we could continuously collect this data, encourage patients to understand the importance of activity and save them the expensive trip to the hospital.”

As humans continue to evolve with smartphones in hand, it’s obvious that wearable devices are an innovative and easy way to access and share information.

The rising popularity of wearable technology can be

attributed to advances in bat-tery and computer technology, which have made it more fea-sible, according to Dr. Adam Powell, a health care economist and a member of Ring Leader.

“Never before in human history has it been common for people to walk around car-rying a computer, a power source and a combination of short-range and long-range ra-dios (like smartphones),” said

Powell. “However, I believe that mHealth devices, which require minimal user intervention and which do not require long-term adherence, will be the most successful. It’s far more realistic to assume that a person will be temporarily willing to wear a device than it is to assume that a person will be willing to wear one indefinitely.”

The group is planning to work on a few more prototypes before seeking regulatory ap-proval.

“We’d want it to be perfect before we unveiled it,” said Gupta.

City’s annual food drive goes social

When Boston’s annual CAN-share program started 27 years ago, there was no Twitter, no Facebook and no smartphones.

But this year, the city’s Of-fice of Food Initiatives is using social media and the Internet more than ever to help collect thousands of pounds of food for needy families in Greater Boston.

The bostonCANshare drive kicks off today with an event at the Copley Square farmers market. This year’s goal is to

get Boston’s citizens and busi-nesses to give 50,000 pounds of canned food to the Greater Boston Food Bank and to do-nate $100,000 to the Fresh Food Fund initiative.

For the first time, people can donate to the drive online. And, this year’s campaign will feature a 10-foot inflatable can mascot that will encourage people to share about the drive on social media.

“It’s a new, fun way of get-ting people engaged,” said Em-ily Finn, bostonCANshare coor-dinator.

Additionally, the drive coor-dinators are reaching out to col-leges and universities to get the student population involved, because even if they individu-ally can’t donate, they can help spread the word.

“That is a population that’s very active on social media, and

so even if [students] are not able to donate, they’re able to help us spread the word,” said Pete Murphy, a Food Initiatives pro-gram coordinator. “They have a lot of social capital, which is something that will be very helpful to us.”

David Petraeus, former CIA director and four-star Army general, will join the faculty of Harvard Kennedy School as a non-resident senior fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

The Harvard Crimson re-ports that Petraeus will helm a project at the Belfer Center called “The Coming North America Decades.” The project will study scientific, economic and technological factors that

have contributed to North American competitiveness and analyze the potential effects of policy options on American in-terests.

Fellow Harvard Kennedy School Professor Graham Al-lison confirmed the appoint-ment.

“We count ourselves fortu-nate,” Allison said, “to have Da-vid Petraeus making a major in-

tellectual investment in issues so central to a center whose mission is to advance policy-relevant knowledge about the most significant international challenges.

“He has an inquiring mind, strategic orientation, intellectu-al fearlessness and appreciation of the academy that will make this a productive partnership.”

Petraeus resigned from the CIA in 2012 following the scan-dal of his affair with biographer Paula Broadwell. He faced pro-tests over his wartime role at an academic appointment in New York last month. It was unclear when Petraeus will begin his stint at Harvard.

President Barack Obama de-clared himself frustrated yes-terday with the malfunctioning website that is central to his signature health care law and vowed to take steps to fix it.

Scrambling to get ahead of a burgeoning political uproar over implementation of the Affordable Care Act, Obama took to the White House Rose Garden to insist the law is big-ger than just a website and that eventually the bugs in the soft-ware will get worked out.

Online insurance exchanges were launched on Oct. 1 un-der the 2010 law, often called “Obamacare,” to offer health insurance plans to millions of uninsured Americans.

But people trying to shop for health insurance at www.healthcare.gov have been frustrated by error messages, long waits and system failures, with many failing to make it through the system despite re-peated tries.

The president acknowl-edged the depth of the prob-lem, saying that nobody is more frustrated than he is.

Getting lost in Wilbur Smith

Best-selling author Wilbur Smith started his adventures at a young age: He was just 13 years old when he shot three lions in self-defense.

Cults keep from getting stale with ‘Static’

When a musical project that be-gins with one or two people be-comes Internet famous, small groups are often forced to ex-pand so that all of their sounds can be fully realized for the live show. And, just as often, the people who made up the core of the band just accept the tour-ing musicians into the lineup for the second album. But Cults guitarist and singer Brian Obliv-ion says he and singer Madeline Follin felt no such temptation to bring any additional help into the creative process.

“I think I’m better with the complexities of putting togeth-er the keyboard part than the complexities of dealing with a keyboardist personality,” he says. “I think that’s the prob-lem with me; I have a hard time dealing with other people.”

This uneasy edge casts a shadow over the poppy 1960s sound on Cults’ new album,

“Static.” It’s like a Motown al-bum’s evil twin. The album picks up where the band’s 2011 self-titled debut left off. The sound is richer, but it doesn’t sacrifice the intimacy or weird-ness of two people having fun making music, regardless if they find success or not.

“We make these records for ourselves and we do hope that people will enjoy them,” he says, “but we don’t really stress out if they don’t. It’s not like we have our hopes and dreams tied up in being a rock star.”

That said, a guy who calls himself Brian Oblivion could probably come up with a mo-ment or two when he engaged in traditional “rock star” dalli-ances touring the world, right?

“I think doing bath salts in Japan,” he says. “There was a moment where, after being up for 16 hours, I was sitting in the middle of Shibuya Crossing and I didn’t know where I was and I started crying and laughing hysterically and then crying again, while these Japanese people were crowding around me. I was like, ‘Oh this is too much.’”

Sophomore slam. The indie band don’t really “Go Outside” from the core group on their new album, and that’s a good thing.

You might think of New York, New Orleans or San Francisco as the ultimate must-experi-ence cities for foodies in our nation. But one — make that two cities are beefing up their culinary presence, and people are taking notice.

From Nov. 15-17, star chefs like Todd English, Ming Tsai and Curtis Stone will descend upon St. Petersburg/Clearwa-ter, Fla., for the first-ever En-joy Arts & Tastes St. Pete fes-tival celebrating food, wine and the arts. Gulf Coast sea-food is naturally the specialty for the three-day party, but celeb and local chefs will play around with other native in-gredients too, like strawber-ries, heirloom tomatoes and sweet corn. Events include cooking demos, a “senses immersion” dinner curated by six chef-and-artist duos, a late-night dessert jam, a best-burger contest and more.

Culinary offerings are at the heart of the fest, but they’re not everything. The weekend also includes a chance to pe-ruse local galleries and muse-ums, plus hit award-winning

beaches (Florida’s No. 1 beach town, per USA Today readers, is Clearwater Beach). With 361 days of sunshine a year, your odds of getting a nice beach day are pretty good. And while you’re in the area, pop by Bright House Field in Clear-water to see where the Phillies do their spring training. The weather should be a balmy 77 or so degrees, so it should feel like spring even in November.

Hoffmann will host events at the fest. Arpaia, who’s lead-ing Sunday’s burger contest, says the party “is just what St. Pete needs to showcase the unique culinary and art scene that this city has to offer.” And Hoffmann, in charge of Saturday’s Latin-inspired walk-around tasting, says she is “thrilled about the resur-gence of our wonderful Gulf seafood.”

Many women assume they

need to wait at least six

weeks after giving birth

before exercising again. You

waited, what, two weeks?

Fitness is something I’ve done ever since I could walk; I exercised almost every single day of my pregnancy. I walked, did yoga, ballet barre and, up until the fifth month, jogged. I wanted to keep circulation in my body and never got swollen feet, ankles or legs.

What kind of yoga were you

doing?

Think about what’s going to prepare your body for delivery: You need a strong pelvic floor and you want the baby to travel further downwards. I did

a lot of squatting, open twists and hip openers; helping ev-erything release and go down.

Were you on a special diet?

I ate the stuff I was eating before, just more quantity. So, a lot of healthy whole grains because folic acid is great for the baby’s brain development, vegetables, a lot of almonds and walnuts and I added fish to my diet — I’m normally a vegan. I wasn’t chowing down on doughnuts. I didn’t want to do that. It wasn’t healthy for me or for my baby. [Pregnancy] is not a vanity contest.

What advice would you give

to women reluctant to

exercise after giving birth?

If you go little by little you’re always in control, you’re not going to get hurt. Be smart, but don’t be afraid. Your body is still your body. In the hospital, I started walking up and down the corridors, stretch-ing my ankles and promoting circulation in my arms and legs. The day I got home, my husband and I went for a walk. I was surprised by how tired I was. ... It’s hard! You’ve lost a tremendous amount of blood and you’re light-headed, but every day I just felt better and better to the point where I had the guts to do more.

Uehara an unfl appable force in Boston bullpen MLB. Koji Uehara has been nothing short of amazing for the AL champion Red Sox.

After allowing a walk-off home run in a crucial playoff game, one would think a typi-cal closer, especially one who hadn’t assumed a full-time closer’s role until this season, would be rattled. But, staying consistent with the rest of his improbable 2013 story, Koji Uehara wasn’t rattled one bit in the days following Game 3 of the ALDS against the Rays.

In fact, Uehara’s focus has seemingly never been better since allowing the dramatic homer to Tampa Bay’s Jose Lo-baton. Since the walk-off, Ue-hara has allowed just four hits and zero runs in 7 1/3 innings. That includes the save he reg-istered the very next night in Game 4 in St. Petersburg, Fla.

“He commands so much re-spect based on the way he goes about his business and the way he prepares every day,” reliever Craig Breslow said. “He is one of the first guys to get here and he takes care of himself after his outings.”

Since being tabbed closer in late June, the 38-year-old

finished with 21 saves (20 after officially being named closer) and was as close to automatic as you can get. After June 26 and with the closer’s title, he allowed just two earned runs the rest of the regular season, including a 30 1/3 scoreless in-ning streak, as well as a club-record 33 consecutive batters retired from late August to Sept. 17.

In the postseason, where pressure is at its highest, Ue-hara has been phenomenal; in nine total innings he’s allowed just one run on five hits while striking out 13 and picking up five saves along the way. He’s also struck out at least one batter in every game ex-cept Game 3 against the Rays, despite a fastball that barely reaches 90 mph.

The 2013 ALCS MVP has also been asked to pitch more than one inning in many out-ings, which was something he hadn’t done much of before this year. Since he was named closer he had seven appear-ances of more than an inning, but in the postseason three of his eight outings have been more than an inning.

Once a major concern during the season, the Red Sox could not be any more confident than they cur-rently are with their closer. When the game is on the line in the ninth inning, with “Sandstorm” playing over the Fenway PA system, and their strike-throwing machine en-ters the game, those games almost always end with high fives all around.
