    OBEDIENTIA ET PAX

The only way to understand Angelo Roncalli is to

understand the guiding principal of his life

A committed and loving relationship with Jesus Christ in

    and through the Catholic Church.

To try and understand Roncalli outside his religious faithis to not understand him at all.

Roncalli lived and died a committed, believing Catholic

    Christian.

Fidelity to Christ and his Church marked his entire life.

    This is essential.

    DEVELOPMENT

    5. You need to make clear what you understand by this

word. Did Roncalli develop Christianity if yes / no what, where, how, when and why? Be very careful

    here!

Ensure you avoid any and all generalisations about Pope

John! He was not an innovator.

He was an inspired and inspirational leader people

    followed him. Why?

    EXPRESSION OF CHRISTIANITY

    6. You need to be clear in your mind what this phrase

means. Take note that the Syllabus directs you to Christianity

    not Catholicism.

Roncalli had significant encounters with Christians otherthan Catholic Christians as well as equally significant

    encounters with Jews and Muslims.

    This matters.
