NEWSLETTER March 2013 PMI Netherlands Chapter | Postbus 90261 | 1006 BG Amsterdam - Vakvereniging voor Project-, Programma- en Portfoliomanagers www.PMI-Netherlands-Chapter.org Spring is there, at least inside the Chapter! While winter is keeping us hostage, inside our Chapter spring for sure is there looking at all the news that we announce in this newsletter. First there is a new Local Interest Working group (LIWg) on Agile presenting itself. They need you support in developing their agenda. So have a look at their contribution in this newsletter and take a few minutes to answer their questions providing them the feedback they are looking for. Another LIWg on cultural aspects in Project Management is still under the construction and not yet ready to communicate to you. I sincerely hope that their contribution will be in our next newsletter. The event program we are able to offer you in 2013 is developing very well. We already had 3 main chapter events, received by you with a 7+, with a lot of suggestions for improvement and hints and tips for topics. We appreciate this feedback very much and will do our utmost best to use it and to improve what we do even further. In the outlook till summer, that you can find elsewhere in this newsletter, there is new phenomena as we are planning to have two chapter meeting on one day! Never done before but one need to experiment to improve. So l am quiet interested to explore how this will work. Details as mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter. This year’s Summit is developing strongly and I am very happy that we are able to provide you a flavor of topics covering a wide range on Project-, Program- and Portfolio Management and PMO brought to you by a variety of (international) speakers and thought leaders. Use the opportunity to register with the significant chapter discount that is available. Details below. Last but not least we are now available via Facebook. Nothing much yet but our new Director Communications took initiative to launch the chapter. Another thing to explore so help us to grow this by providing us your feedback or rather using the Facebook possibilities to let this grow. Then I should shut-up as I rather have you to read the articles in this newsletter. One topic, not in this newsletter, however I would like to draw your attention to. PMI (Global) released a study on the importance of talent management in organizations titled “Why talent management should be more important to organizations”. Organizations with a clear focus on talent management are more successful than those without it. I would warmly recommend this article to you. See if it can help your own organization to become more successful. Read this in-depth report on talent management and see why organizations that don’t prioritize project talent management will be on the wrong end of a talent shortage in the coming years. You can find the article here: PMI Pulse 2013. A lot of exciting stuff is brought to you by our chapter or PMI. Hence for me a no-brainer that being a member of PMI and the Chapter delivers significant “membership value”. Nevertheless we need to have an open mind on how we can guide our chapter to keep up with the trends and changes we are constantly facing. As always open for your suggestions and dialogue via [email protected] Cees Pijs, President

Introducing our new Director Communications

My name is Malgorzata Krakowian. I graduated with master of computer science degree at Jagiellonian University in Cracow (Poland) and finished post graduate study in IT project management and International project management at AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow.

From the beginning of my career I've been working for large scale European and national grid projects (e.g. EGEE, EGI, PL-Grid) where I've had chance to work with great people from around the world. Because of that some time ago I've started to seek for information about how successfully work in virtual teams. Currently managing virtual teams and communication, which is essential in dispersed environment, are my main interests in field of project management.

In Poland I was involved in various PM and IT communities: IPMA, PMI, ITwKrakowie (ITinCracow), Perl Mongers. Privately I'm also involved in Cracow's cycling association which aim is to propagate alternative means of transportation than cars (especially cycling).

In 2012 I've moved to Netherlands and joined, as Operations Officer, EGI.eu which is a non-profit foundation established to coordinate and manage the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) federation on behalf of its participants.

Since 2013 as Director Communication I'm responsible for developing and executing PMI NL Chapter Communication Strategic and Operational Plan. I will do my best to improve our internal and external communication.

Malgorzata Krakowian, Director Communication

Upcoming Events We would like to invite you to April PMI Netherlands Chapter Meeting at Cambridge Weight Plan in Amersfoort. In this meeting we will focus on the human face of projects. Jan van Rouwendal is going to present how to create a project dream team. It is worth to be there so do not forget to register: PMINLCH April meeting. Thank you Cambridge Weight Plan for hosting us.

Then on May 16th there will be two meetings on one day. A meeting in the afternoon at Avans Hogeschool Den Bosch and in the early evening at NS in Utrecht. Keep following us, as details on those meetings will be announced soon.

In June the Summit will be in the core of the focus. Details elsewhere in this newsletter. Also in June we are looking at possibilities to have a different kind of chapter event with the work-title: “before we go on Summer leave”.

After the Summer break we will more emphasize on hard skills like:

• Governance • PPP Management Office(s) • Earned Value Management • Scheduling and Estimating • Risk Management • (Change Management in) Cloud Computing

Dates and location yet to be settled, so do follow-us to stay up to date. The 2013 outlook is very promising and for sure, with the support of the Internal Program Board (under construction), we will continue this into 2014.

Creating/updating Volunteer profile in VRMS! Recently we started using the VRMS. Once your profile is also available in this system, we can easily extract information about the people who have shown an interest in becoming a volunteer, or who are already volunteering and also what opportunities are available within the PMI Netherlands Chapter. If you are already volunteering or you would like to volunteer and you have not created a profile yet in VRMS, we invite you to do that now!

The Volunteer Relationship Management System (VRMS) is has become the tool to find a volunteer opportunity with a chapter or community of practice and match that against the people who want to be considered for a volunteer position with the chapter. There is one essential requirement: enter your profile in VRMS.

Having a volunteer profile of you in VRMS also helps us to serve you better, since we will have one source with all relevant data and the application process for an opportunity will become shorter and easier. In addition, we can refer to this system in case we have something to share with our (potential) volunteers.

All you need to access VRMS is your PMI username and password. Since last month, we have a new Volunteer Engagement Liaison. Her name is Maria Nikolopoulou. She will be working with me to maintain the VRMS and to match the volunteer opportunities with the volunteers. Both of us will be available for you to support you in case of questions regarding creating or updating you profiles in VRMS.

You can contact us for support at the email addresses mentioned below:

PMP Exam Coaching Class Last week René Vielvoije and I had our annual meeting with our coaches: Frans Eijpe, Ad Withaar, Margo Rinzema, Lex Haket and Jolanda Roosen.

While enjoying a cup of soup and some sandwiches we looked back in time and noticed that the Dutch Chapter facilitates coaching classes since 2004. So it’s has developed into a pretty mature volunteers activity!

Most coaches are involved for many years and are pretty eager to continue this activity. They have developed into a highly successful, fully integrated team. Each class is supported by two coaches who seamlessly work together. For them coaching is great fun! Looking into the nearby future the current coaches still would like to continue their volunteer work to support our (new) members and help them to prepare for the examinations. The Board is very happy to have such a good performing team of motivated volunteers!

We do need some “management of expectations” however. It still seems to be confusing what to expect from the coaching classes. Some think it’s a full PMBOK training, but the only objective is to help participants to get prepared

for the examination by answering questions and discussing difficult topics. One has to digest the learning materials on its own or alternatively follow a training/prep via one of the valued education providers/sponsors of the chapter To avoid any future confusion we have decided to change the name into “PMP Exam Coaching Class”.

Although there is a difference in PMP and CAPM, people who aim to get CAPM certified, remain welcome at these classes! All applicable information and help will be provided as well. We see a growing need for more information on Agile and Scrum. The coaches do their utmost best to stay up to date on these subjects and to answer questions sufficiently.

Then something about the new PMBOK 5th edition. A new knowledge area “Stakeholder management” is added. This implies that from july this year the examination will be enhanced with this knowledge area. And, as a consequence, the coaching classes will be updated on this as well. In addition, the current coaching class (started on 9th of March) will already spent some time on this subject.

New from now on, will be a change in prices for PMI members, PMI-NL Chapter members and non-members. It is pretty obvious that being a PMI-NL Chapter member is the best option!

The coaching classes, from now on PMP Exam Coaching Classes, will be scheduled twice a year, one in spring and one in autumn. The schedule (date, time, location) and pricing will be communicated via the website.

Tell your friends and colleague’s! Hope to see you on the next coaching class!

Introducing the Local Interest Working group on Agile In February the LiWG Agile started their journey in Ede. Goal of our workgroup is to explore Agile and its meaning for the project management community. Agile projects have a number of specific characteristics. We want to describe these and share them with you. We will do so through the publication of articles in the newsletter of the PMI Dutch Chapter every 4 - 8 weeks. In each article we will answer a specific question. The first article will answer the question: What is Agile? And your feedback is appreciated.

Ultimo 2013, these article will be bundled in in a whitepaper. The topics of this paper are not fixed at present, but will adapt to any changing circumstances or needs of you as a customer during the period of project implementation.

The Agile approach originates from IT-oriented projects with software development, but the principles can very well be used in other types of projects.

Where PMBOK mainly focuses on the management of projects, Agile focuses on the creation process of the products that will be delivered within the project. Additionally, Agile is no specific methodology such as PMBOK but more a collection of principles / methods used within the project to deliver the products according to the wishes and requirements of the customer. There are several

methods available within the PMI-ACP Agile spectrum, PMI’s Agile Certification for Agile Project Management.

An Agile project approach assumes that the world changes during the project

and tries to facilitate these changes as well as possible, without losing focus on the project results.

Being an Agile Workgroup we like to have as much interaction with our customer as possible. As a workgroup we have made a backlog of topics we want to explore in our articles and white paper. We would like to have your feedback and suggestions on these questions and their priority.

Therefore, we kindly request you to give us your view on what question/characteristics we should first pick up
