Local domestic-staffing employers say they see effects of‘Downton Abbey’ in New York Requests for butlers, lady’smaids and even yachting experience in that one special staffer

Looking for

their own

‘Downton’ staff

Listings on the SocietyStaffing site:

A Great Neck familywould pay a butler/house manager morethan $90,000, but amust is “providing excel-lent service to residentsand guests alike.” Muchlike the butler on“Downton,” they wouldbe in charge of liaisingwith staff and oversee-ing daily meals.

Another butler wantedon the Upper West Sidewould need to travel tothe Hamptons and livein during the summermonths. Pay is $80,000plus.

A woman in Tribecawants a lady’s maid toorganize her closet andkeep track of her sea-sonal wardrobe and pre-pare clothing forpersonal events, for asalary upwards of$60,000.

Must be able to fly to theHamptons at a moment’snotice. Yachting skills aplus. And be willing to re-fill the refrigerator.

These are just a few ofthe challenges offered upby the incredibly rich, and a new breed of do-mestic staffer is fillingthem.

Experts in the industryare chattering about the“Downton Abbey” effect—the hit British dramafollows a manor’s familyand their servants inWorld War I-era England.

And after watchingcharacters like butler Mr.Carson open doors andsmooth jacket shoulders, some New Yorkers wantthat for themselves.

Bertold Wiesner, man-aging director at SocietyStaffing, which providesBritish-style services, saidcalls increased after theshow, with about four orfive inquiries a week now.

“There is a certainamount of glamour to theworld they inhibit,”Wiesner said of theshow’s allure.

Mary Jane Seymour atChelsea-based The ButlerDid It, Inc., which pro-vides special-eventsstaffing, said New Yorkerswant familiar faces, re-questing the same peopleagain and again, whichresembles ‘Down-ton,’

where staffers live in andstay for years.

“In that sense, it is alittle ‘Downton,’” she

said. Within Society

Staffing’s job listings arephrases heard on theshow — one woman inTribeca wants a lady’smaid to organize her sea-sonal wardrobe and pre-pare her for events.

On the show, personalmaids help ladies drip injewelry and dress lavishlyfor even a routine dinnerat home.

And although butlers, lady’s maids and valetswill work in Manhattanapartments instead of thesprawling English coun-

tryside, most demands re-main the same, Wiesnersaid — unwavering loyal-ty and discretion.

Most clients are execu-tives with families livingon Park or Fifth avenues, said Society Staffing CEORobert Parry. NewYorkers are a differentbreed of boss.

“They know exactlywhat they want, so it’s al-ways a challenge,” Parrysaid. “They want to havethe best of everything.”

What does a butler do?Wiesner recently launcheda “Butler for a Day” serv-ice, which lets clients tryout a butler at the cost ofup to $1,000, dependingon services. The tasks

themselves range daily,Wiesner said. Some are“mundane,” he said, likestocking the fridge orbooking a car, but othersmay be more spontaneousor complex, like findingballoon rides for a party orspecific embroidery for a

garment. And getting thegig isn’t easy — NewYorkers want staffers to becollege-educated, fluent inat least one language(preferably French) andwell-traveled with a validpassport. “They must beable to travel privately, leave any time at theclient’s discretion,” Parrysaid. Wiesner managesthe company’s Europeanoffices, but he previouslyworked as a butler aroundthe world for clients, including New York. Oneclient in the Hamptonsasked him to check electricdog fences surroundingthe property. “I wasshocked like 38 times,” hesaid.

“We want to takepeople back to anearlier age, wherecustomer serviceand presentationwas all aboutelegance anddiscretion.” WIESNER

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), there are about 270,000 knee replacement operations performed each year in the United States. This image depicts the procedure.

Want to avoid knee surgery?

Our program could be the

solution you are looking for.

Do your knees hurt when going up or

down the stairs?

Do you frequently take medication for

knee pain?

Have you tried physical therapy?

Do the activities you enjoy cause pain in

your knees?

Have you had cortisone or other injections

to the knee that have not worked?

Do your knees make you feel older than

you really are?

Are you afraid that your knee pain is only

going to get worse?

If you answered YES to any ofthese questions, keep reading...

[1] Reference - Epidural steroid injections procedures.

may vary. Prior results cannot guarantee future outcomes.

Why do knee injections often fail? What’s different about our procedure?

Precision is the difference.

Most doctors today do one of three things:

1) They perform “blind injections”

(an injection done without imaging guidance).

2) They use antiquated equipment from as

far back as 2001, even in some of the

largest hospitals in New York. 3) They use

Cortisone, which can have side effects.

FACT: 30-40% of blind injections

result in needle misplacement. [1]With this much inaccuracy,

it’s no wonder most people never find relief.

Our solution...Our office uses Hyalgan®

What exactly is injected into the knee?

Hyaluronic acid (Hyalgan®) is a natural

substance extracted from rooster combs

and purified to mimic the lubricating

substances that occur naturally in the

joint, called synovial fluid. In patients

with osteoarthritis, synovial fluid

“dries up”, allowing the cartilage of

the joint to rub against itself and other

surfaces. This causes pain, inflammation,

and usually damage to the joint. Think of

this treatment like oiling a rigid, squeaky

door hinge.

When will I feel results?

Most feel an immediate reduction in

pain and can return to normal activities

in weeks.

Yes, most insurances will coverthis treatment. We work with*:

Unfortunately, we do not participate withMedicaid, Workers Comp, no-fault insurance,Emblem PPO, HIP, EPO or HMO plans.* Coinsurance and deductible apply.

Affordable payment plans available to fit all budgets. Call our office for free insurance benefits verification.

Cuomo seekschange to NYabortion lawsIn his State of the Statespeech, Gov. AndrewCuomo announced a planfor a 10-point Women’sEquality Act.

The points ranged fromissues such as equal pay tostricter repercussions forsexual harassment. Themost contentious point isNo. 10, which proposes aReproductive Health Act“protect[ing] a woman’sfreedom of choice.”

The governor did notexpand on what thatwould entail, though hisoffice confirmed that itwould involve removingabortion from New Yorkstate penal law and regu-lating it through the state’spublic health law, as wellas augmenting the criteriaunder which late-termabortions are permitted.

Currently, New Yorkstate law allows late-termabortions in cases wherethe mother’s life is in dan-ger. Federal law permitslate-term abortions inthose cases as well, butalso includes cases whenthere is a threat to themother’s health.

Doctors who performabortions in the latter cas-es are protected by federallaw, even if the abortionsoccur in New York state.

Opponents of the billare referring to it as theAbortion Expansion Act,prompting the governor toinsist that his law “doesn’t

change the legal parame-ters whatsoever,” as it only“codifies [federal policy] asNew York state law.”

When pressed, Cuomoconceded that “the pointof having it in the state lawis if the Supreme Courtever made a different deci-sion,” referring to theSupreme Court case Roe v.Wade, which legalizedabortion in 1973.

24Late-term abortionsare those performedmore than 24 weeksinto the pregnancy.

How does NewYork compareThe law would be signifi-cant nationally, as thepast two years have seena record number of lawsrestricting abortion ac-cess on the state level. In2012, 19 states passed atotal of 43 provisions re-stricting abortion, whileno laws were enacted tofacilitate or increase ac-cess to abortion, accord-ing to a policy reviewfrom the GuttmacherInstitute.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo laid out a 10-point Women’s Equality Act in his recent State of the State address.

Yoko Ono: The worldtoday is full of activismHalf a lifetime ago, artistYoko Ono lay in anAmsterdam hotel bed withhusband John Lennon, staging a weeklong “bed-in” for peace and feelingthey were very alone intheir activism.

Today, Ono, whose ownenergy for campaigninghas never tired, sees aworld full of activists, maintaining her energyand faith in humanity.

“When John and I didthe bed-in, not many peo-ple were with us. But nowthere are so many activists,I don’t know anyone whois not an activist,” she toldReuters in an interview inBerlin yesterday, her 80thbirthday.

“Even the corporations— John always used to saythe corporations need tobe with us. ... Corporationsnow say 10 to 20 percent oftheir profits will go tosuch-and-such charity.

They have to do that al-most for people to feelgood about it.”

The late Beatle andOno’s 1969 bed-in toprotest against theVietnam War was repeatedin Montreal, Canada. Pressattention was huge, butmuch of it was mocking.

Ono, who gave a sold-out concert in Berlin onSunday alongside their sonSean Lennon that closedwith the anthem “GivePeace a Chance,” said it isstill critical to stand up forpeace despite new conflictsin the intervening decades.

The United States is likelyto eventually resume di-rect support for Mali's mili-tary — but only after fullrestoration of democracythrough elections, thehead of a visiting U.S.Congress delegation saidyesterday.

Senator ChristopherCoons, chairman of theSenate Foreign Relationssubcommittee on Africa, was leading the firstAmerican congressionalvisit to the West Africannation since France sent amilitary force there lastmonth to halt an offensiveby al Qaeda-allied insur-gents.

The United States hasbeen providing airlift andrefueling support for theFrench-led operation in-volving hundreds ofFrench and African troopsthat has driven theIslamist rebels from astring of northern Maliantowns in the last fiveweeks.

Washington has alsobeen sharing intelligenceto back the operation, but

has ruled out sending itsown ground troops.

Coons, heading a four-member delegation fromthe U.S. Senate and Houseof Representatives, saidboth French and Africanmilitary commanderswere happy with the sup-port that Washington wasproviding, but he indicat-ed they might welcomemore.

“There is the hope thatthere will be additionalsupport from the UnitedStates in these and otherareas,” the Democratic

Senator from Delawaretold reporters in Bamako.

Asked if increased U.S.support for the military in-tervention could material-ize, Coons said U.S. lawprohibited direct assis-tance to Mali’s armedforces because of the mili-tary coup there last yearthat toppled the electedgovernment.

“After there is a fullrestoration of democracy, Iwould think it is likely thatwe will renew our directsupport for the Malian mil-itary,” he added. REUTERS

To illustrate the basic mystery of darkmatter, imagine taking a Chihuahuato the veterinarian. When it’s time tobe weighed, instead of the scale read-ing 10 pounds, it reads 100 pounds.

Doctors are shocked when their tools find thedog’s body is completely normal and doesn’taccount for the extra phantom weight. Lateryou give your wonder dog a bath. After heav-ing the purse-sized furry anomaly into a fulltub, all of the water spills on the floor as if theentire container is filled, yet you see plenty ofempty space.

Similarly, galaxies behave as if they haveabout 10 times more mass than what’s visible.Second, galaxies appear to hover within alarger beach ball-shaped cloud of invisiblematter, undetectable except through gravity. The source and identity of dark matter is un-known. The remaining 70 percent of the uni-verse is dark energy. In 1998 the Hubble SpaceTelescope discovered an unknown force accel-erating galaxies away from one another anddriving the universe to expand faster. NASA’sastrophysics page summarizes proven knowl-

edge: “We know how much dark energy thereis because we know how it affects theUniverse’s expansion. Other than that, it is acomplete mystery.” There are many promis-ing candidates for dark matter/energy, each

with flaws and bene-fits. Still, no clearfront-runner exists. The search is on toidentify dark matterand energy likely sur-rounding and passingthrough you rightnow. Experimentersaround the worldsearch for answers us-ing both laboratoriesdeep undergroundand particle accelera-tors. Meanwhile, tele-scopes study distances

from individual galaxies to the structure ofthe whole universe.

Solutions will forever change humans’views of reality and shed light on thelife cycle of the universe, beginningand end included. As 1800s Germanphilosopher Friedrich Nietzsche

wrote, “If you gaze long into an abyss, theabyss will gaze back into you.”

The universe is more than galaxies, stars, planets and empty space. Whatwe see as “everything” is less than 5percent of the total universe. The re-maining 95 percent is dark matter anddark energy. The origins and identityof both are unknown.

Scientists employ the use of technology such as satellites and telescopes to try to detect dark matter in both direct and indirect ways.

There are manypromisingcandidates for darkmatter, eachwith flaws and benefits.

We have an outstanding college acceptance record.High school diploma program for students who are in middle or high school(includes study in English as a Second Language).Pre-University program for students who have competed high school. English as a second language program for beginner, intermediate or advanced students. No previous knowledge of English is necessary.

Is graduate school theright thing right now?

Adding those extra letters after your title can give you a career boost But plan ahead to how you’ll pay it off

Money is one of thefirst things thatcomes to mindwhen one consid-

ers applying to a graduateprogram, let alone goinginto one. But what is the re-turn on your investment? Itdepends on you.

As a coach and trainerfor creative professionals,Dave Mowers says whenstarting out in graduatestudy, “You’ll be surround-ed by opportunity, newand fascinating people, lofty ideas, incredible de-mands and intense feed-back and attention.” Canyou make it pay off?Mowers lays out what toknow before committingthe time and money.

Why should we think

about grad school rightnow? There are signs of econom-ic recovery. We have manyindustries, and advancedtraining and education arekey to the innovationmovements across theboard. Are there commonmistakes people makewhen deciding to apply orchoosing a school? The No. 1 mistake is the as-sumption that any specificprogram will change yourlife and solve financialproblems. People’s secondmistake is taking an initialrejection as a stopper. Butthe biggest mistake is tak-ing on the cost without arealistic plan for managingfinances after the programis complete.

Five tips

What to remember whentaking the next steps:

Research is free. Spendtime online with schoolsthat interest you, but alsovisit open houses.Learning about a schoolis the first step to learn-ing from the school.

Applying is not committing.Applications aren’tcheap, but they’re a smallinvestment compared tothe cost of attending aschool. Find out whatyou need to succeed andtake it from there. Youdon’t have to accept.

Keep an open mind.

Sure, there is always aprogram ranked No. 1,but there are also otherschools that may offeryou better options forplacement upon gradua-tion.

Ask for it. Graduateschools are competingfor your business. Makesure you are meetingface to face with a com-mitted team of peoplewho will help you get theexperience you want.

What happens after?Business is still businesswhen you finish, and itcomes down to who youknow. Graduate schoolshould provide you witha network that will moveyou toward your profes-sional goal.

Career coach Dave Mowers says you’ll be surrounded by opportunity and “lofty ideas” at grad school.

Is enrolling in continuingstudies classes a goodalternative to immersingyourself in grad school fulltime?Continuing studies pro-grams offer an amazingroute to achieving your ca-reer goals. Programs likethis are staffed by profes-sionals working in the

field. Most of them partici-pate because they are in-terested in cutting-edgedevelopment, staying cur-rent with thought leader-ship in their industry andsharing a passion for theirdiscipline or work.

Intellectualexploration is not just forundergrads Graduate programs thatallow students to take aninterdisciplinaryapproach are croppingup at universities acrossthe country. With an out-side-the-box approach, aninterdisciplinary degreeallows students to choosetheir own curriculum.Students are without theconstraints of what amore traditional depart-ment may require. In thisway, a student can unifydisparate interests into adegree that is tailored totheir aspirations.

Matthew K. Gold is anassociate professor at theM.A. program in LiberalStudies at CUNY'sGraduate Center. He saysthe interdisciplinary pro-gram gives students free-dom. “I think it’s a

benefit because studentscan direct their study to-ward their own personaland professional goals. That gives students theability to shape thedegree to their owndesires.”

Students can let theirinterests in, say, fashionand business or sociologyand urban planningcome together in one de-gree.

Gold says that theseprograms preparestudents for an increas-ingly complex jobmarket, political scenarioand technological envi-ronment.

“There has been muchconversation about theways in which academicdisciplines are connect-ed,” he says. “The prob-lems of our world call formultidisciplinary and in-terdisciplinary solutions.”

THE WORDDorothy Robinson’s take on the world of gossip @dorothyatmetro [email protected]

Twitter was ablaze overMindy McCready’s tragicsuicide on Sunday. Thetroubled 37-year-old coun-try singer shot herself inthe same spot her long-time boyfriend, record pro-ducer David Wilson, killedhimself a month earlier. But after reports emergedthat McCready killed thefamily dog before turningthe gun on herself, sympa-thy turned to anger — peo-ple seemed to be muchmore upset that she shother dog rather than beingin such a dark place thatshe would leave behindher two young children,Zander, 6, and Zayne, 9months old. A sampling:

@ChasinCarolineSeriously? Mindy #McCreadykilled her dog before shekilled herself? Now that’scruel!

@wwtdd the fact thatmindy mccready killed herdog first makes me glad shesdead

@ChristopherFTL Mindy

McCready shot and killed herdog before turning the gunon herself. My sympathy me-ter just went to zero afterreading this.

As a huge animal lover, I

get the outrage. But asmurder/suicides go, a dogis better than, God forbid,a child. Of course, Twitteris but a small sampling ofwhat we’re all thinking, but isn’t it fascinating that

the world decided to pickup on this aspect of thetragedy rather than the hu-man one — that two littlechildren are going to bescarred for life and willgrow up with no mother?

Rihanna gets intoa fight with a fanSome of Rihanna’s fans arestill not OK with her rekin-dled relationship with ChrisBrown, and they’re notafraid to show it. The singerwas left injured outside aLondon nightclub after a fanhurled a bottle of Lucozade,a British energy drink, at herwhile screaming about herreunion with Brown, accord-ing to the New York DailyNews. Witnesses say

Rihanna fell against a metalshop grate during the ensu-ing mayhem, cutting herknee.

I feared tragedy,”Dexter-Jones tells the Daily

Mail. She remembers a par-ty for the opening of theAtlantis Hotel in Dubai asbeing a particular breakingpoint. “Suddenly, withoutany warning, Lindsay flungherself onto the thick carpetand started to roll around

screaming like a child,”Dexter-Jones says. “Itseemed she was upset thatpeople, including Saman-tha, were not paying herenough attention. To mymind, it was classic psychot-ic behavior.”

Wilde on herdream gownOlivia Wilde and JasonSudeikis may not have offi-cially set a date for theirwedding yet, but Wilde isthinking about what she’llwear. “I’m very excited tolook for a dress,” Wilde tellsPeople magazine. “I thinkwomen should want a dressthat inspires them, especial-ly for an important day like awedding. I’m looking for adesign and materials thatrepresents the best versionof myself.” So what exactlydoes that entail? “Anythingthat is modern, elegant andplayful,” Wilde says.

FRIGID returns to NYCReturning for its seventh year, FRIGID Fest promises new and

returning indie theater acts Which ones to watch — and why

Returning to NewYork City for theseventh year,FRIGID Festival

brings together a collec-tion of exciting, uncen-sored performance artpieces ranging in theme, tone and structure fromstand-up comedy to bur-lesque, from short worksto full-length plays. It takesplace in multiple down-town venues from Feb. 20to March 3, and artists col-lect 100 percent of pro-ceeds — plus, of course, invaluable exposure.Executive Director Erez Zivtells us what FRIGID has instore for 2013.

Congrats on seven years! How did FRIGID originateand how has it progressed? The idea for FRIGID wasfirst introduced to us byChristina Augello of ExitTheater, who runs theFringe Festival in SanFrancisco. ... She told me

about this festival thatgives 100 percent of box of-fice proceeds back to theartists. It fit the mission ofHorse Trade like a glove, and within a couple ofmonths I was in Montrealmeeting with all the Fringeproducers from Canada. …Over the past seven years, the festival has grownsteadily, [allowing] us todistribute close to $30,000to participants last year —up by more than 50 per-cent from the first year!

Who is the target audience? We have some good showsthat anyone who enjoyslive theatrical entertain-ment will enjoy. We alsohave shows that appeal topeople who would not nor-mally go see a show up-town or who can’t affordthe steep Broadway prices. There’s an eclectic mix ofshows. What’s thecommon thread? The common thread is art!The work is new, fresh, ex-citing and surprising. Most

importantly, it is all creat-ed and performed by someof the hardest-workingpeople in show business:self-producing indie the-ater artists. What are some standouts?I am excited about“Traditional Dances of SriLanka.” This is writer/per-former Una Osato’s fourthyear in the festival; if herprevious shows are any in-dication, “exHOTic Other”will be great. “A Day in theLife of Miss Hiccup” is com-ing all the way from Tokyo,Japan. This is her first timein the FRIGID Festival. I’vebeen hearing a lot of greatbuzz about her, so I’m real-ly excited to finally see herperform. But ... every yearthere is at least one showthat really takes me by sur-prise, and those are theones I always enjoy themost.

T. Michelle [email protected]

RENE FERRER

“A Day in the Life of Miss Hiccup” is playing at The Red Room during the FRIGID Festival, starting Feb. 20.

How do showsqualify for FRIGID?

The work qualifiessimply by virtue ofhaving been created. Allyear long we [read]scripts, bios, résumésand reviews, wepreview shows andexamine past work, we

ask interns what theythink, we confer withcommittees, we doreadings and readingsand then we do morereadings! This is the onechance a year we get tojust let things happenand see what comesout. [And then] we pullshows out of a hat!Literally, a top hat.

Meet JonnyValentine, an 11-year-old pop starwho worries

about hitting puberty andcareer longevity. In “TheLove Song of JonnyValentine,” author TeddyWayne gives us a peek be-hind the velvet rope of ayoung pop star. Sort of in-spired by Justin Bieber, thebook delights in mockingan American society ob-sessed with nubile stars. But it also strikes seriouschords, examining whatthat obsession does to thepint-sized pros themselves. Some serious momentseven eerily parallel Biebernews stories after Waynewrote the book, like vio-lent threats and a marijua-na scandal. Wayne, 34,talked to Metro aboutprepping through celebglossies and guitar strums.

So how many front-rowJustin Bieber concert seatsdid you buy to research?I ended up not going toany. I didn’t want to be toobeholden to the reality ofBieber concerts. I didwatch his documentaryfilm. It’s entertaining; it’shis own official documen-tary but he’s savvier andsmarter about his imagethan you’d think, than thenormal teen pop star. I

watched a lot of amateur[YouTube] concert footage.Jonny struggles with a few challengesthroughout the book. Some authors say they feellike their characters leadthem — did you have agood idea of the ending,or did you feel like Jonnysurprised you?I had a general idea ofwhere I wanted to go, butone thing I found with

writing is I do a lot of ven-triloquism. This novel andthe previous novel areboth in voices very unlikemy own. I do a lot of hu-mor writing for magazinesand newspapers that’s also“ventriloquified,” othercharacters. When I getinto another character’svoice, I start thinkingabout this character, and itdoes lead me to their deci-sions and thoughts. How does society get to aplace where we idolize11-year-olds?We hold them up as theseparagons of innocence. …And then inevitably, theyfail us — because it’s im-possible to stay innocentforever — and once theydo, we punish them. We’recruel about it.

Alison [email protected]

How did you getthe idea for thebook? There wasn’t really a“eureka” moment. I’dbeen tutoring kids inBrooklyn once a week, and at the same time I’dbeen working on a novelthat was going nowhere. One time, I saw one of

the girls reading MileyCyrus’ book, “Miles toGo,” and it must havelanded in mysubconscious because aweek later, a friendasked if I had any ideas.I said, “How about weparody these teen popstar biographies?” Anhour later, I realized if Itreated this with moregravity, it could make amore serious novel.

TV watch listA bit of a falling out with Fall Out Boy Pete Wentz

We must have said something to upset bassist and nownovelist Pete Wentz He insists his new book isn’t a memoir

Pete Wentz was ap-parently not happywith something wesaid and decided to

abruptly end our interviewfour questions in. In the in-terest of full disclosure, early on in the discussion,we did try to break the iceby referencing those nudephotos that leaked onlinein 2006. But if that riledhim up, we think it wouldhave made more sense forhim to hang up at thatpoint, instead of well intoour interview about his de-but novel “Gray.” At leastwe were able to salvagethese (somewhat) coherentthoughts from our chat.

You worked on this bookfor years. What did it taketo finally come out?I don’t know, I guess it’s

just — I mean, I don’tknow. I think creative proj-ects don’t really happenovernight, I guess. There’sno rhyme or reason to whyit takes a little — I mean, there’s no specific reason, Iguess, you know. The main character sounds

like you — a Chicago guywho quits school when hisband gets big. How muchof you is in him?I mean, it’s 100 percent fic-tional. ... There’s compos-ite characters in the sameway that I think that if youread people’s books

throughout history they’reinformed by their lives, but I think in the kind ofobsessed culture we livein, people are like, “Well, then that means that it’sautobiographical,” but it’snot. ... I could have writtenit as a nonfiction becauseyou get more bang foryour buck. Nonfiction, it’slike on the ‘Today’ show …and it’s obviously a lot ofeasier to get [on the] NewYork Times best-seller list, but ... you know, I don’tknow, I mean, it’s just notthe road that I would take.Well, thanks for clearingthat up. Did you approachyour writing the same wayyou write music?[Click]

Meredith [email protected]

Did the storychange while youworked on it?I guess, I mean, thepremise and the ideawere the same. I mean,I think the narrativetook on different direc-tions a couple of times, but that’s the natureof, I guess, writingsomething.

Selman, on the other hand, seem to be banking on thefact that plenty of womenout there want to look justlike her. So rather than show-ing us something new andcreative, like the platinum-selling albums she turns outyearly, these clothes seem abit last-year. That’s mostlybecause these tank dressesand sheer tops are replicas ofthings she’s already worn, and that clearly seems to bethe point (it worked for theKardashians). 3:15 p.m. Um, just how many shows isCara Delevingne walking inthis season? That girl isinescapable. And where yousee her, Jourdan Dunn is notfar behind. Last night, theywere partying at Rihanna’sshow together. Today they’reopening Unique like two im-possibly lean partners incrime. KH

3:30 p.m.This is one of the best collec-tions Topshop has producedin a while. A few takeaways:

1) Skirts are longer and fullerthis season. Unique’s, whichcome in leather andshimmery sequins, are par-ticularly good.

2) Satin is trending. But thekey is to make it young, cooland casual. Witness the navyjumpsuit, which was a showhighlight.

3) The more oversized, thebetter. This collection epito-mizes the overall slouchier, roomier and comfier feelingof the season. KH

Questionsfor VivienneWestwoodThe Saatchi Gallery inswanky Chelsea is about aspunk as Prince Charlesthese days, but it used tobe home to VivienneWestwood and MalcolmMcLaren’s “Sex” shop inthe ’70s. Anyway, I’m onmy way to speak to Viv.Easier said than done, see-ing as the publicists haveobviously taken tips fromNorth Korea when it comesto media access. Ninetyminutes pass by and theexcitement amongst cam-era crews and reporters be-gins to wane (there are nochairs) — then she arrives.

What statement are youmaking with thecollection, particularly inrelation to JulianAssange? This collection’s not gotany strong political state-ment in itself — it’s justhere to help people lookmore attractive and moreglamorous. I expect themessage for the fashion is“Quality is more importantthan quantity.” Buy less, choose well, make it last. The other thing is, I alwaysuse my fashion as aplatform to talk outagainst the problems we

face. The most importantthing is public opinion, which makes politicianschange — particularly themessage about climatechange. Climate change iscaused by the rotten finan-cial system we’ve got andwe can all see what it’s do-ing now. It’s making every-body poorer, it’s making afew people richer andthat’s what this system isdesigned to do. It destroysthe Earth. Are you anti-capitalism?Er, I don’t know. This issomething we have towork out. I mean, forexample, there’s far toomuch manufacturing inthe world of total rubbish. If we want money to circu-late, you could pay peoplenot to work, which we doanyway, or you could makemore money by payingteachers, for example. Andyet, we are cutting downon all those things so thatwe can continue our oldway of doing things whichis to manufacture so a fewpeople can cream off theprofits, destroy the Earthand destroy the livelihoodsof everybody else in theworld. BEFORE AFTER

Why is 3 the

magic number?

At 3, you can reason withthem. Before that, mostkids really can’t compre-

hend guidelines or whyit is important to followdirections. Until they canunderstand and recog-nize boundaries, it is somuch easier to keepthem in the crib wherethey can have the bestsleep.

BRAND X PHOTOS

Amy Lage tackles a variety of child sleep issues at www.wellrestedbaby.com.

Easing your child throughthe transition from sleep-ing in a crib to a new beddoesn’t need to be a night-mare. Child sleep consult-ant Amy Lage has made acareer out of helping fam-ilies best approach thiscrucial moment in a tod-dler’s life. If your childcannot stay in a crib safelyany longer (for example, your little monkey is mak-ing a great escape everynight to crawl into bedwith you) or is asking for atoddler bed, it might betime for Lage’s advice.

Why is the transition fromcrib to bed so important? We want to make sure thatthe entire family is getting

as much sleep as possible, and that your children arewell-rested. To avoid thosemiddle-of-the-night wake-ups, it’s important to setthe tone and do it right thefirst time. It keeps every-body on track. Your suggestion of letting achild pick out new sheets ora bedframe is interesting.Do kids find this exciting? Yes — children are alwaysa little nervous about thechange. This makes themfeel in control of the situa-tion, which is so importantfor toddlers. They are so of-ten grasping for control intheir lives. Can older kids help too?Absolutely — especially ifthe sibling is a great sleep-

er. They can talk up thenew bed, and how excitingthe change will be. Havingthem get the younger sib-ling excited will help. What sparked your interestin this topic? Did you havetrouble transitioning yourchildren? I have a 2-year-old and a 2-month-old. The older oneis actually still in her crib, and will stay until sheasks to switch. In thesleep community, we real-ly think it’s important tokeep children in their cribuntil they are really ready.I’m a big believer in wait-ing until 3.

Parenting and blogging:Meet the Tyler family

Ronnie and Lamar Tylerwere thrilled to find oneanother after some falsestarts. They blended theirfamilies from earlier rela-tionships, and their mar-riage thrived. But itsometimes seemed as ifthey were the only happilymarried couple in theworld.

Everything they heardabout marriage in the me-dia and in their communi-ty was negative. “Divorcerates are high, and peopleare having a lot of childrenout of wedlock,” Ronniesays. “All of that makes itimportant that there arepeople like us out therepromoting positive imagesand showing people thathappily married couples doexist, that marriage is greatif you put the work in.”

So, the couple startedBlackandmarriedwithkids.com because they lovedbeing married and wantedto try blogging about theirfeelings. As IT managersthey were Web-savvy, butthey didn’t expect theirblog to take off the way itdid. Friends and familyhave spread the wordabout the blog, and thecouple does guest bloggingon bigger sites to attractreaders. On their site, theysell banner ads, DVDs oftheir documentaries about

successful or healed mar-riages in the black commu-nity and books onmarriage by other authors.

The couple saysBlackandmarriedwithkids.com attracts 150,000 to200,000 visitors a monthand their revenue doubledlast year. For the first time

last year, the Tylers workedfull-time on their business, while also parenting fourkids. “We had to writeabout something that wewere both passionateabout and that we wouldwant to write about 10years later,” Ronnie says.REUTERS

Bonnie Kerrigan Snydergraduated from Harvard in1987 and was thrown intoa sinking economy — anda job market not terriblyinterested in English ma-jors. Today she’s a familycollege consultant, and shesees her clients strugglingwith the same obstaclesshe ran into post-gradua-tion — only much worse.

Her latest book, “TheUnemployed CollegeGraduate’s Survival Guide:How to Get Your LifeTogether, Deal with Debt, and Find a Job AfterCollege,” mines some ofthe wisdom she picked upin the ’80s and appropri-ates it for an even bleakerjob market.

“I wanted to create asurvival guide that took

this job crisis seriously. This isn’t advice you’d giveto just any generation. Thisgeneration is unique inhistory, and the same rulesjust don’t apply,” saysSnyder, from her home inLancaster, Pa. “They’re re-ally caught in a doublewhammy. There’s obvi-ously a recession, butthere’s also a demographiccrunch going on: There’sjust more older peoplenow, and they’re holdingonto their jobs muchlonger.”

Kerrigan’s guide beginswith a strong dose of emo-tional reassurance for post-grads feeling let down bytheir job status and judgedby their parents.

“In my experience, thekids are more aware of the

realities than the parentsare. Parents are having ahard time adjusting theirexpectations,” says Snyder.“There is a way Americanshave approached collegefor generations: Choose aschool first, discover whatyou’re interested in whileyou’re in school and start

thinking about a job inyour senior year. Thestakes are so much higherfor these kids, and we needto start thinking about thepayoff of this investment alot sooner.”

The newrealitiesIn her latest book, familycollege consultant BonnieKerrigan Snyder dissectsthe outdated wisdom ofAmerican highereducation. Here is just oneexample:

Outdated thinking: A col-lege degree ensures finan-cial security. The new reality: Collegecan be a risky financial in-vestment, and that risk

needs to be hedged. Afamily only has so muchmoney to help launch achild into the workforce.Diverting some of thoseresources toward a homeor starting a business is abetter strategy.

Being the new kidin the office alsocoincides with be-ing the new kid on

the block, so it is especial-ly important that youdon’t let your work takeover your entire life. It’snot good for your job andit’s not good for you.

Julie Chandler, an ex-ecutive with staffing firmRobert Half International, says that work-life bal-ance is one of the mostimportant facets to per-forming well at work.“When I have that work-life balance, I go in thenext day with a smile onmy face because I’m hap-py to be back,” she says.

Here are the top threeways to keep your life bal-anced:

Take breaksStarting a new job on theright foot means workinghard, but it doesn’t meanthat you can never stepaway from your desk.Being glued to a chair infront of your computer foreight solid hours every sin-

gle day can take its toll. Trytaking regular breaks orask a co-worker to join youfor lunch away from yourdesks. You’d be surprisedat how much of adifference it can make!

You’ll return to workfeeling refreshed andready to get back to it.

Leave work atthe officeIn the age of social mediaand smartphones, work isno longer contained to theoffice. Assignments canroll in at any time with theclick of a button.

It is important to make

a distinction betweenwork time and home time.Do you really need to bereading budget reports onSaturday morning or can itwait until Monday?

Job permitting, try toavoid checking your worke-mails during weekendsand evenings.

Make plansAfter a long day at work, itcan be tempting to slumpdown on the couch for therest of the evening. Whilea little R&R is never a badthing, it’s important tobreak out of your work-to-home routine. For some, this means making planswith friends, going out af-ter work and taking in lo-

cal attractions. Put life backinto your work-life balanceand experience your city.

Some notionsshould go theway of chivalryRE: “THE LOST ART OF THELOVE LETTERS” (METRO,FEB. 14) If any womanheld me to all of yourValentine advice, I wouldconsider her a fool.

1. If I wrote ahandwritten letter (I’mnot referring to the signa-ture) to anyone when Icould have typed it, Iwould be going out of myway to make therecipient’s life harder.

2. I don’t need a beardto convince people thatI’m a man. The unavoid-able “5-o’clock shadow”does the trick, even earli-er in the day.

3. A nice car? I don’tneed a car in New YorkCity, so having one wouldshow me to be a spend-thrift and indifferent tothe public good.

4. If a man has to havea high-paying job to getmarried, shall we reserveall high-paying jobs formen so that more peoplecan get married? Thinkabout it!ALAN R. BROWN, VIA E-MAIL

Pope primefodder for greatheadlineI just wanted to say thatthe headline for Metro’s

Feb. 12 edition that said:“Benedict: Too pooped tobe pope” has got to beone of the best lines Ihave heard in years. I justlove the way it soundsand it has been stuck inmy head all week. Theother night my friendasked if I wanted to goout and since I was I wastired I just replied, “Nothanks, I’m too pooped topope.”

It’s terrible, I can’t getit out of my head. I’vebeen laughing about it allweek. Thank you for mak-ing my week, or probablymonth. PETER BOYLES, VIA E-MAIL

Jackman didn’tgo out of his wayto squashrumorsRE: “HUGH JACKMAN:NOPE, NOT GAY” (METRO,FEB. 27) I enjoyed your ar-ticle about HughJackman. Before DanielCraig was cast as the lat-est Bond, there wereblind items in the NewYork tabloids alluding toHugh not being cast be-cause gay rumors wereswirling around him.Ticket sales would plum-met. He was one of thehottest men in Australiaeven before internationalstardom hit. How manygorgeous, 20-somethingwomen must havethrown themselves at himin vain.MICHAEL RIORDAN, VIA E-MAIL

A DIFFERENT KIND OF WINE COUNTRY

Coyote’s Run grows its grapes on two distinct soils.

Coyote’s RunEstate Winerywww.coyotesrunwinery.comCoyote’s Run is situatedon 58 acres of two typesof soil — one red, oneblack — which meansthat two pinots, chardsor other varietal cantaste remarkably differ-ent. Generally speaking, grapes grown in red soilhave a fruitier taste, whereas the black soilproduces wines that aremore earthy. Because theproperty sits in a slightlywarmer part of theregion, the grapes hereare often harvested oneor two weeks earlierthan other area wineries.

Star cornerback not happywith team about trade rumors

Revis: ‘I need answers’ nowFor a team that seems tonever stop talking, theJets apparently haven’tspoken to star cornerbackDarrelle Revis recently.

Revis sat down for aninterview with NFLNetwork last night, inwhich he complainedabout not hearing any-thing from the Jets beforerumors of trading the cor-nerback broke earlier thisoffseason.

“I was speechless be-cause I didn't get a phonecall,” Revis told NFLNetwork. “I know it’s abusiness, just call me.Don’t have it lingeringout there. I need answersand I’m not getting any.Just the fact that was putout there and not contact-ing your best player onthe team.”

Revis, 27, tore his ACLin Week 3 and missed theremainder of the seasonin 2012. With just oneyear left on his contract, the Jets are torn betweenextending a player com-ing off a major knee in-jury or trading him fordraft picks to rebuild a

struggling franchise. The Jets are also very

close to the cap and willcut veterans Bart Scottand Calvin Pace, as Metropreviously reported, justto free up space.

New general managerJohn Idzik stated at his in-troductory press confer-ence last month it wasmuch too early to specu-late on any trades. Revishas reportedly spoken toIdzik since giving the in-terview to NFL Network.

The NFL Combine be-gins on Thursday, wherehead coach Rex Ryan andIdzik will speak to thepress.

SUPREME COURT OF THE STATE OF NEW YORKCOUNTY OF NEW YORK

The purpose of this notice is to advise you of this class action lawsuit, and of certain rights that you may have with respect to this action. This notice is not an expression by the Court of any opinion as to the merits of any claims or any defenses asserted by any party to this litigation.

Plaintiffs Miguel Moreta, Jose Munoz, Geraldo Quezada, Leonard Clarke, Dennville Jarvis and Runey Francis (collectively the “Plaintiffs”) are former employees of 4-A General Contracting Corp. and/or SSN General Contracting Corp. (including entities known as SNA Contracting Corp., Dellwood & 4A Construction, LLC) (collectively the “Contractor Defendants”) who brought this lawsuit on behalf of all other current and former employees of the Contractor Defendants who performed work on publicly financed construction projects for and/or at the direction of the Contractor Defendants. This lawsuit was also brought against defendants RLI Insurance Company, Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company and Centennial Insurance Company. Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company and Centennial Insurance Company are in liquidation. As such, all proceedings in this action are stayed as against Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company and Centennial Insurance Company.

The Plaintiffs allege that they were not paid by the Contractor Defendants at the prevailing wage and supplemental benefit rate for the construction work that they performed at various New York City Housing Authority (“NYCHA”) project sites throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The Plaintiffs further allege that they were not paid overtime compensation for hours they worked over forty in any given week.

The Defendants deny any wrongdoing and/or liability to the Plaintiffs or any other past or present employee and vigorously contest all claims asserted by the Plaintiffs.

For the period from January 1, 1996 through approximately 2004, the prevailing wage and benefit that should have been paid to individuals performing such work as carpentry, plumbing, painting, tiling, demolition, and other construction work at the various publicly financed construction projects ranged from approximately $34.32 to $70.00 per hour, depending upon trade.

You may be owed payment if you worked for the Contractor Defendants at any of the NYCHA construction projects. You may also be owed payment if you worked for the Contractor Defendants for more than forty (40) hours per week and you were not paid overtime at time-and-one-half (1.5x) your hourly rate of pay for all hours actually worked over forty (40) hours each week.

You do not need to do anything at this time as you are automatically a member of the class of workers who have claims arising under New York law so long as you worked for the Contractor Defendants at any time since 1996. As a class member, you will be bound by any decision of the Court in this lawsuit.

The Court has authorized publication of this Notice simply to advise you about the status of this lawsuit. Due to an existing criminal proceeding involving some of the Contractor Defendants and their principals, we cannot provide a timetable or estimate of when this class action lawsuit will be completed. For the time being, the Court has authorized Class Counsel to seek production of payroll and other contract documents related to this case.

Lloyd Ambinder, Esq. of the law firm of Virginia & Ambinder, LLP, 111 Broadway, Suite 1403, New York, New York 10006, telephone number (212) 943-9080, website: www.vandallp.com has been appointed by the Court as Class Counsel to represent you in this action. You will not be required to pay any fee for services provided by Virginia & Ambinder, LLP. If you are represented by Class Counsel, their costs and fees will be paid out of any recovery against the Defendants. You have a right to consult with an attorney about this matter. If you wish to be represented by other counsel, you may retain another attorney, but you may be responsible for paying that attorney.

If you do not wish to participate in this class action lawsuit, you must send a letter to Class Counsel stating your intention to opt-out of this lawsuit and exclude yourself from the Class. The letter should be sent to LaDonna M. Lusher, Esq. of Virginia & Ambinder, LLP, 111 Broadway, Suite 1403, New York, New York 10006. If you decide not to participate in this lawsuit (opt-out), you may not be eligible to receive any benefits in the event that any recovery is obtained. You would be free to file or pursue claims against any of the Defendants independently at your own expense.

The foregoing description is general and does not purport to cover all of the parties’ claims, contentions, denials and defenses in the action. For a more detailed statement of the matters involved, you are referred to the pleadings and other papers filed in this action, all of which may be inspected at the Supreme Court of the State of New York, New York County Court House, 60 Centre Street, New York, New York, during normal business hours.

Further information about this notice and answers to other questions concerning this lawsuit may be obtained by contacting Lloyd Ambinder, Esq. or LaDonna M. Lusher, Esq., of Virginia & Ambinder, LLP, telephone number (212) 943-9080, facsimile number (212) 943-9082 or on the web at www.vandallp.com.
