Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (BGCGW) celebrating 127 years of

continuous service to children, teens and families, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater

Washington (BGCGW) is a Major Metro Affiliate of Boys & Girls Clubs of America

(BGCA). BGCGW serves over 14,000 youth annually at 12 sites throughout Wash-

ington, D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia. Since 1886, Boys & Girls Clubs of

Greater Washington has provided positive options for youth in the Washington,

D.C. region. Our Clubs provided thousands of boys and girls with daily guid-

ance oriented character development programs in a positive environment where

children are encouraged to develop their ambitions and turn them into GREAT

FUTURES.

TAP 2013BGCGW’s 2013 Teen Arts Performance (TAP) Camp is partnering for the first

time with Kirov Academy of Ballet (KAB), to offer three weeks of classical train-

ing to local youth. This, alongside our collaboration with Michigan Park Com-

munity Development Corporation at Michigan Park Christian Church, Broadway

playwright Keni Fine, and the various artists who have donated their time to

offer camp participants world class arts training, has made this program a huge

success.

WELCOME TO BGCGW’S 6TH ANNUAL TEEN ARTS PERFORMERS CAMP!

This is a project of love initially conceived with the help of our Women’s

Leadership Group to bring the kidsand teens we serve a deeper exposure to the

performing arts. As schools continue to contract their offerings due to economic

pressure, we are bound to keep this very important activity available to our youth.

If you are reading this you probably already know how the arts can be in-

tegral to the expression of feelings and bringing out that inner voice that is often

unheard. Talents of which perhaps noone is aware have come to light through

participation in TAP Camp. Amazing collaboration, partnership and generosity are

adjectives that describe the group of campers, professional artists, student interns

and other volunteers (including BGCGW administrative and club staff ) assembled

every summer by our Regional Artistic Director, Tony Small. These folks give their

time and experience for the benefit of our youth.

This year we will be working on the wonderful new musical play,

ENDANGERED!, a modern fable written by NY playwright Keni Fine and scored

by Tony. Not only can they learn about set design and costume making, they will

get an idea of Broadway music- making from A to Z. Additionally the themes and

lyrics of the play, both spoken and sung, will expose campers to the science around

endangered species, including the environment, ecology and zoology as well as

emphasizing the reading skills necessary to learn and excel in acting roles. Last but

not least our curriculum will include the concept of ‘edutainment’as we study the

scientific method, along with a module on the physical sciences provided by AAAS,

the world’s largest consortium of STEM educators. This integration of STEM and

the arts brings true momentum to the phrase“BGCGW is running on STEAM! “

Page 5: 2013 TAP camp Ambassador's Guide

Thank you for your interest in TAP Camp. Our end of summer event this

year will be an August 8th performance of Endangered! at the Kennedy Center’s

Millennium Stage. We hope you will not only join us at this marvelous event but

will actively look for ways to support our campers as they explore the exciting

world of the arts and beyond.

MEET OUR COMMISIONED

I am passionate about using art - theater, music, song, story - to help educate and illuminate the most im-portant issues of our times. I have also always been passionate about nature and protecting wildlife and the envi-ronment, concerned with issues such habitat destruction, global warming and the fossil fuel debacle, chemical pollu-tion, poaching, melting icecaps, killing and disappearance of mammals and other species. This is what inspired me to write “ENDANGERED!” The Eco-Mu-sical along. “ENDANGERED!” is a fun title, but also a scary word. It means that an entire animal species of is in danger

of becoming extinct - disappearing forever, which is happening now to a fright-eningly large number of species. “ENDANGERED!” invites us all to ask: “Why are there so many “endangered” species of animals in our zoos, and around the globe?” “What is being done about it, and what can I do to address the disappear-ance of habitats and animal species?” “What can I do to address global warming and climate destruction, which is causing extreme weather such as “super-storms,” to happen?” It gives kids and adults alike a chance to enjoy a fun story of a group of colorful animals coming together to help each other, and then to later think about the issues raised and do something about it. I hope they do both.
