Logger SportsAs logging is

Campbell River’s heritage

and prime industry, in 1975 the Salmon Festi val introduced a Loggers Sports

demonstrati on as part of the celebrati on and in 1984 it became a sancti oned competi ti on of the Canadian Logger Sports Associati on (CANLOG)!

This fi rst formal competi ti on consisted of 1 Canadian Championship, 15 events and $5,000 in prizes. Popularity and support for the event began to grow each year and in 2004, with a

prize package of $25,000, the Salmon Festi val’s Logging Sports event hosted it’s fi rst World Championship. In 2005, it hosted 2 World and 7 Canadian Championships, 31 other events and over $30,000 in prizes ranking it No. 1 in Canada. Today this competi ti on is sti ll ranked No. 1 in Canada and is ranked No. 4 in North America.

Although an impressive record, the World Class Competi ti on would not exist without the support of the city, sponsors and spectators.

Historically logging has been the prime resource

based industry for the coastal areas of Briti sh

Columbia. From the days of hand logging, bulls, horses and steam machinery to

today’s use of grapple yarders, self-loaders, and

helicopters the industry has seen many changes. Throughout

these changes the one thing that has remained

constant has been the loggers

getti ng together to show off their skills in friendly competi ti ons.

Today, nearly every major logging community has a form of these competi ti ons, which have become to be

known as “Loggers Sports“ and Campbell River is no excepti on. Since Campbell River is the major center for the logging industry on Northern Vancouver

Island as well as the many coastal islands and inlets, it is only natural that

Logging Sport Competi ti ons became a major event in the

community.

Logging Sports are not just competi ti ons amongst the loggers

but they also depict the heritage

of the North Island by

incorporati ng entertaining events that show both

past and present logging practi ces. Events such as axe throwing, tree climbing, spring board chops, log rolling, hand bucking and high

speed power saw cutti ng never cease to amaze the crowds at these competi ti ons.

Logging Sports has become so popular in Campbell River that TSN Television network aired our 2000, 2006, 2007 & 2011 Logger Sports as well as A- Channel, CHCT TV, and Shaw TV routi nely cover our Logger Sports on their news and sports broadcasts.

In 2006 and 2008 we were able to host the most presti gious Logging Sports event in Canada, “the Canadian East-West Logging Sports Challenge”. This competi ti on hosted Ontario, Quebec and Mariti me Loggers as they competed against Alberta and Briti sh Columbia loggers to determine who are the best, East or West.

The West won both events. In 2010 two competi tors Mitch Hewitt & Dave MacLeod were chosen at our show to represent Canada at the World Timbersports in Austria. Canada came in 4th out of 17 countries.

The 2013 competi ti on will host 2 World Championships and 7 Canadian Championships along with 30+ other Open, Intermediate, Novice, ladies, Youth, and Teen events. Internati onal and local loggers will be competi ng for part of the $30,000 prize package at this World Class Loggers Sports Competi ti on.

For 7 consecuti ve years the Campbell River show has been the largest Logging Sports Competi ti on in Canada and is currently ranked 4th in North America.

This is defi nitely one event you don’t want to miss!
