I think it is importantfor WWS to have an out-going spokesperson topromote our rodeo. I loveour town and our rodeoand would be honored tobe that spokesperson. Iam outgoing and friendlyand what better way toput that to use than to

    promote our rodeo andcommunity.

    Kaity Montr, 20,Smartsville

For years I have beenheavily involved in Rodeoand I made a promise tomyself that I would neverstop. I take a lot of pridebeing involved in Rodeoand living the western

way of life. Being in the

rodeo world is a hugeprivilege and I believebeing put in a position

where little girls look upto you and admire youraccomplishment is morethan just a responsibilityor a job. Being involved inRodeo Pageants hastaught me how to bepatient, responsible, and

very self reliant. Thosequalities come from thehard work of representingthe sport of rodeo. To bein that position again

    would be an amazinghonor.

    Caitlin Rose, 22,Grass Valley

    I have a very romantic

viewpoint on rodeo andits origins. I am very pas-sionate about the idealsand value that countryand rodeo folk possess.

I love showing that sideof the sport of newcomersas well as teaching thecrowd the rules and safetyfor both animals and peo-ple.

Mutton Bustin is asport for young-sters who think its

great fun to be a cowboy.Donning a helmetinstead of a cowboy hat, they climb onto the backof a wild and woollysheep and hang on forthe ride. The youngster

who hangs on for thebest ride is the winner ineach age group; but theyall have a blast along

with the crowd thatcheers wildly for eachBuster.

Rodeo clowns, here forthe bull riding later on,get in on the action and

keep it safe and fun forthe little ones. BestDressed winners willreceive Wranglers Jeansand Justin Boots.

Mutton Bustin is heldat 12:30 p.m. Saturdayand Sunday and an extrasession will be held at theend of the rodeo on Sun-day. A rodeo ticket is

required to watch it. Kidsmust pre-register to par-ticipate.

    Bareback ridingBareback riders endure

more abuse, suffer moreinjuries and carry awaymore long-term damagethan all other rodeo cow-boys. It has been com-pared to riding a jack-hammer with one hand.

As the bronc and riderburst from the chute, therider must have bothspurs touching the horsesshoulders called markingout. A bareback rider isjudged on his spurringtechnique, the degree towhich his toes remainturned out while he isspurring and his willing-ness to take whatever

might come during hisride. An eight-second rideearns a judges scorebased on the perform-ance of both the cowboyand the horse.

    Steer wrestlingThe objective of the

steer wrestler, who is alsoknown as a bulldogger,is to use strength andtechnique to wrestle a

steer to the ground asquickly as possible. At thetime the two cometogether, theyre bothtraveling bout 30 milesper hour. The bulldogger

starts on horseback in abox. To catch the sprint-ing steer, the cowboy usesa hazer, who is anothermounted cowboy whogallops his horse along

the right side of the steer

and keeps it from veeringaway from the bulldogger. The steer gets a head startand when the cowboyreaches the steer, heslides down and off theright side of his gallopinghorse, hooks his right armaround the steers righthorn, grasps the left hornwith his left hand and, using strength and lever-age, slows the animal and

wrestles it to the ground. His work isnt completeuntil the steer is on itsside with all four feetpointing the same way.

skilled ropers - a header and a heeler -and their horses. The event originated onranches when cowboys needed to treator brand large steers and the task provedtoo difficult for one man.Team ropersstart from the boxes on each side of the

chute from which the steer enters thearena. The steer gets a head start deter-mined by the length of the arena. Theheader ropes first and after he makes alegal catch, he turns the steer to the leftand exposes the steers hind legs to theheeler. The heeler then attempts to ropeboth hind legs. After the cowboys catchthe steer, the clock is stopped when thereis no slack in their ropes and their horsesface one another.

    Saddle bronc riding

Saddle bronc riding is rodeos classicevent, requiring strength, style, graceand precise timing. Saddle bronc ridingevolved from the task of breaking andtraining horses to work the cattle ranch-es of the Old West. Every move the broncrider makes must be synchronized withthe movement of the horse. The cow-boys objective is afluid ride, some-

what in contrastto the wilder andless-controlled

rides of barebackriders. To properlymark out hishorse, the saddlebronc rider musthave both heels touching the animalabove the point of its shoulders when itmakes its first jump from the chute. Thesaddle bronc rider has only a thick reinattached to his horses halter. Using onehand, the cowboy tries to stay securelyseated in his saddle for eight seconds. If

he touches any part of the horse or hisown body with his free hand, he is dis-qualified. Judges score the horses buck-ing action, the cowboys control of thehorse and the cowboys spurring action.

Bull ridingBull riding, which is intentionally

climbing on the back of a 2,000-poundbull, emerged from the fearless and pos-sibly fool-hardy nature of the cowboy.Bull riding is dangerous and predictablyexciting, demanding intense physical

prowess, supreme mental toughnessand courage. The bull rider may use onlyone hand to stay aboard during theeight-second ride. If he touches the bullor himself with his free hand, he receivesno score. While spurring a bull can add

to the cowboys score, riders are com-monly judged solely on their ability tostay aboard the twisting, bucking massof muscle. Every bull is unique in itsbucking habits which are studied by theriders. A bull may dart to the left, then to

the right, then rear back. Some spin orcontinuously circle in one spot in thearena. Others add jumps or kicks to theirspins, while others might jump and kickin a straight line or move side to side

    while bucking.
