The Urban Activity Center is located on the corner of 9th street and Mission street of San Francisco, within the South of Market. It is surrounded by diverse activities of the city, from homeless shelters, to music schools, to designer’s offices. The building houses mainly exercise and activity space, ranging from a multiuse court and a swimming pool to meeting spaces. The building is also coupled with an air filtering system, allowing the inhabitants to exercise within nature in the center of a city. The green wall has two systems, one that filters outside air through the plants into exercise rooms, while the other system filters in sunlight for other activity rooms.

Building as an urban lung by utilizing the two systems.

Provide fresh air within the city.

Fresh air for excises programs, and shade for act for other activities

The fresh air is drawn into the main atrium and ventilated to other rooms.

The air filter tile has fans equipped behind, with denser greenery. While the sun filter is sealed with glass, providing shade and view.

Bethal Island is a man-made reservoir that is currently being flooded. Each year, residents have to check the water level as new levees are being built. Because of its special condition, many new plant and animal species inhabit this area. The daily changes of the water level is a huge variant and determinant in this area, hence the architecture also needs to respond to the condition. The task is then to explore and develops a new building method or material that can respond to the people and environment.

The primary goal of designing the Franks Tract Visitor Center is to foster interaction and awareness of the landscape to the visitors. This is mainly achieved by nestling a geo-textile system that engages with the site in various ways to produce programmatic and occupational opportunities.

The geotextile allow interaction of the environment and people by infiltrating the textile with the plants, rising above the plants, and letting the plants grow within the textile.

First explorations of the existing spaces

Cities today offers us little opportunities to expand our curiosity or test our comfort level. Everything is designed to be easy to locate. Efficiency is the main drive behind the way cities are planned; there is no room for the ambiguous, the unease, and the unacceptable.

This project aims to enhance those qualities by becoming a portal to the world underneath a bridge, deep down into the abyss. The tunnels and dark dungeons await the visitors as the entrance entices them to enter. The library shares the knowledge that were once banned or abandoned. While the church accepts and allows one to express inner beliefs and worships. The sunken sanctuary is a place where people can discover the underground atmosphere, unravel their curiosity, and step out of their comfort zone.

To further push the atmosphere and allow for more accessibility and connection between the spaces, an incision is made into the ground, providing a slow descent into the area while the bridge hovers above. This enables the program to take on its own atmosphere, slowly eroding away the established structure of the bridge.

The first attempt is looking directly at the spaces beneath the bridge and see how they can be manipulated and transformed while not loosing the inherent atmosphere.

The areas underneath the bridge can only be accessed through the big field on the north and south. The station and the spaces under is separated and sealed off. The inaccessibility allows the existing space to inherit a sense dodginess and shadiness, which then becomes the quality and excitement of the atmosphere it offers.
