    The Feldenkrais Method

The Feldenkrais Method, developed through 40 years of study by Dr. Moshe

Feldenkrais, is a revolutionary approach to understanding human functioning. Itutilizes movement and attention to enhance our natural abilities to learn, to changeand to continue to develop throughout our lifetime.

Throughout the world, the Feldenkrais Method is growing in recognition and withwider application in the sciences and the arts. Certified Feldenkrais Practitionersuse movement, attention and sensory re-education to promote ease and comfort, improve coordination and flexibility, expand self-awareness and evoke greatervitality.

Feldenkrais provides a new and creative way to refine human performances insports and the arts. It is impressive in its versatility. It can facilitate rehabilitationfrom accidents and illnesses, prevent on the job injuries, and assist those withlearning disabilities. Feldenkrais draws on the physical sciences, martial arts, andall the human sciences. It encompasses the developmentally based patterns ofhuman movement and behaviour.

Feldenkrais lessons take two main forms - Awareness Through Movement and

    Functional Integration

    .

Awareness Through Movement lessons are verbally directed movement lessons, usually done in a group. As each person explores the movements, they experiencemore of the range of possibilities of human movement and functioning. Movement

patterns are explored in various positions including sitting, lying, standing, andwalking.

A Functional Integration session is an individual lesson, using a gentle, non-

invasive hands-on interaction to guide the student towards a new or more varieduse of themselves.

As well as preparing you for an exciting new career, training in the FeldenkraisMethod provides intensive personal learning and growth.

    8 Perth 3 Feldenkrais Professional Training Programme ~ 2013-2017

    Programme

    Year One

In the first year of the programme, the primary theme is embodied learningthatis learning through the direct experience of thinking, feeling, sensing and acting. To develop your appreciation of the work from the inside out, you are immersedin Awareness Through Movement (ATM). We present the basic tenets of theFeldenkrais Method (FM) and fundamental ideas from associated disciplines will

    be introduced through experiential learning.

You begin by working on sensing yourself - to develop your ability to sense or to

observe movement and understand the movements. Observing yourself and thenother trainees, you will begin to recognize how individuals organize similaractions differently.

Functional Integration (FI) training will introduce the art of making contact andthe various ways of touching. Exercises will emphasize developing tactilesensitivity, working with awareness through touch, making distinctions in whatyou are sensing and observing basic skeletal anatomy through experientialexercises, and understanding the principles of movement.

Some of the fundamentals of the Feldenkrais Method will be explored in light ofcurrent understandings such as the balance between implicit and explicit learning, developmental themes and the concept of multiple frameworks of understanding.

The online learning modules will cover fundamental knowledge such as humanstructure and function (anatomy and physiology) to support the experientiallearning gained in the ATM. The online learning will consolidate your learningfrom the previous segment, draw connections to previous learning, and develop

your attributes to become a self-autonomous learner.

By the end of the first year, you will appreciate the facets of embodied learning asa self-referential system and begin to apply this implicit learning in yourengagement with others.

    Perth 3 Feldenkrais Professional Training Programme ~ 2013-2017 9

    Year Two

In the second year, the theme broadens to learning to facilitate embodied learningin others via language. You develop an understanding of the grammar and syntaxof ATM lessons. You look in depth at a number of classic ATM lessons. Youreview and elaborate on the themes from Year One. Personal experience anddiscussion will guide you in reflecting upon what constitutes the underlyingstructure of a lesson.

You learn how to use your voice as a compelling instrument, how to giveinstructions and guide a class, as well as how to relate the lessons to activity indaily life. You will teach lessons to each other while being supervised by teachingstaff.

In this year, you will also begin to explore the relationship between ATM and FI.Hands-on work is introduced through guided activities in pairs and smallgroups, and from the beginning you learn to translate the embodied learninggained from ATM into powerful and safe self-use, as well as clear observational

    skills of another persons organisation.

As your understanding of the Feldenkrais Method develops, you will practicearticulating its unique distinctions.

At the end of the second year you will be authorised to teach ATM to the publicon a provisional basis. This will be supported by the development of appropriate

    professional skills and behaviours.

    10 Perth 3 Feldenkrais Professional Training Programme ~ 2013-2017

    Year Three

In the third year the theme is facilitating embodied learning via other modalities,in particular using touch as another means of communication. You clarifyconcepts and refine the hands-on skills needed to achieve competence in FI. Theseskills develop through active learning and problem solving a looped process ofquestioning, exploring, evaluating and directing.

Your perceptual skills (both visual and tactile) will continue to develop as youshift between the ideal and the reality of an individuals organisation and

movement. Both hands-on and group teaching skills will continue to be developedthroughout the year. Inquiry into the teaching of ATM continues into the third andfourth year.

You will begin to apply what you have learned to real-life ATM classes. As youbegin to teach ATM outside the programme, we will provide forums for questions, discussions, and evaluations. Other online learning continues to add to yourknowledge base.

You will be giving Functional Integration lessons to other trainees and workingwith a client from outside the programme. In a private tutorial we work closelywith you to identify your areas of need and to develop specific, personalized

    solutions.

Continued discussion of the fundamental principles of the Feldenkrais Methodoccurs throughout the next two years, along with the growth of professional skills.

By the end of year three you will have gained experience as an ATM teacher andbe developing competencies in the basics of FI.

    Year Four

In the fourth year the theme is one ofintegrationof all the composite skills andknowledge required to be a professional practitioner; of both intrinsic andextrinsic learning; of socialising your work into the context of the broadercommunity. Some more unusual and challenging positions and situations will beintroduced in both the group lessons and in the hands-on work. You will continueto explore what constitutes a lesson and to develop your understanding of how itworks. You will observe the teachers giving two to three lessons with the sameoutside person.

The ideas behind a series of lessons will be developed. Special attention will begiven to the beginning and ending of lessons and interviewing will be practised. You will be paying special attention to your ability to articulate and present thework at this stage. Your ability to track learning in your lessons and to facilitatethe appropriate transfer into function will be developed. Ongoing attention tocongruent self-use is facilitated by feedback, ATM and self-monitoring.

During year four you will be supervised giving Functional Integration lessons tothe general public.

Online learning will support your understanding of the structure of FI (and ATM)

and re-visit foundation knowledge gained in earlier years. Specific professionalaspects will be explored such as ethics, responsibilities, boundaries and safety, aswell as skills related to marketing and business management.

At the completion of this year you will be eligible to graduate as a FeldenkraisPractitioner and the process of lifelong learning starts afresh. To provide asupported transition to fully independent practice and learning an optional fifthyear programme will be offered. This will include ongoing online communicationand a short face to face component in the middle of the year where you can reflect

on your progress and fill the gaps in skills and knowledge that have emerged inyour practice. The content will be based on the expressed needs of the

    participants.

    Learning Strategies

The training will draw on many teaching-learning approaches in keeping with thework of Moshe Feldenkrais. In order to benefit fully from these, each day will

consist of 6 hours of face to face time, as well as online learning time for theremainder of each term.

    Awareness Through Movement

You will experience many hours ofAwareness Through Movement(ATM) lessonsthroughout the training. ATMs are an integral part of how you create conditions forlearning for yourself, and from that, how you do this for others. The core of thelessons will be drawn from the trainings of Moshe Feldenkrais. We feel that it is

important for you to experience different types of lessons, from simple to complex, single lessons to a series that covers a wide range of human action.

    Functional Integration

As part of your training experience, you will receive at least three individualFunctional Integration (FI) lessons each year from members of the staff. We alsoinvite experienced practitioners to attend the training and to offer supplementarylessons. Beyond that, you will be given opportunities to observe lessons givenduring class, lessons given to other students during non-class hours, and video tapes

of Moshe Feldenkrais giving lessons. Both ATM and FI practice will be encouraged throughout the whole of each term.

Touching and contact skills will be introduced early in the programme. Using yourknowledge of classic Feldenkrais strategies you will learn how to create

meaningful lessons by refining your tactile, kinaesthetic, and visualdiscrimination. In the third and fourth years you will be giving supervised FI to the teaching staffin one-on-one tutorials, to fellow trainees and to the public. Individual and group

feedback will be given. You will also be making a video of an FI lesson you have given and going throughthis lesson with one of the teaching team members.

    Small Group Activities

Group activities, such as discussions and practical exercises, will be used to analyseand develop your understanding of course materials, ATM and FI. Through these

processes an atmosphere of open learning develops that acknowledges and draws

from the diversity of the students different backgrounds, skills, knowledge, andexperiences.
