    GOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

After a record-breakingfirst season as quar-terback of Folsom

High, Jake Browning isready for his junior sea-son.

Browning threw for astate record 5,248 yardslast year, along with 63touchdowns and all signsare pointing to another

big season this year. Forhis part, with a yearsexperience under his belt,Browning believes he is abetter quarterback thisseason than he was lastyear.

I wanted to get bigger, stronger and faster and Idid that, Browning said.I also worked on mydouble moves and I

understand the offensemore this year. I knew allmy reads and everythinglast year, but this year Iknow more than theplays. I know why wererunning them and whatwere trying to do.

    Brownings coach, TroyTaylor, also believes

Browning is a better quar-terback today.

    For starters, hes big-

ger, Taylor said. I thinkhes up to 187 poundsfrom 165 last year. Justbeing bigger and strongermeans that hes got morevelocity on his passes andhe can throw it farther.Hes also faster on hisfeet.

Theres more to Brown-ings improvement thanhis physical ability.

Hes got more data inhis brain with his first yearbehind him and thatexperience really is the

most important thing,Taylor said. He knowswhat hes seeing. Also, theguys around him haveimproved as well. Wespent a lot of time onstrength and conditioningand as a team are bigger, stronger, faster and quick-er and those guys willmake Jake look bettertoo.

    The teams commit-

ment in the offseason togetting stronger andworking on improvingtheir overall athletic abili-ty has Browning excited

about this years offense. We really put a bigger

emphasis on getting big-ger and stronger andimproving our speed andagility with Coach Val(Laolagi), Browning said. Were bigger across theboard because of thatstrength training. Wevegot a good line with peo-ple stepping up and wevegot a great group ofreceivers with WillMcClure, Josiah Deguara,Rodney Ellison, Troy

Knox, Parker Boone andBailey Laolagi at runningback.

While Browning put upimpressive numbers aseason ago, none of that isimportant to him. He justwants to win footballgames. When asked abouthis goals for the season,he didnt mention any-thing about passing yardsor touchdowns.

I want to completeevery pass and I want ourteam to win every gamewe play, Browning said.We dont go into any

game thinking were goingto lose. Im confident, butnot over-confident. Wethink we can win everygame, but we still have togo out and do it. Wehavent won a game yet.

Taylor doesnt put anyexpectations on his quar-terback either, other thansimply getting the jobdone.

I expect Jake to be the

same guy as he was lastyear, Taylor said. Iexpect him to be veryconsistent and patientand take the game as itcomes. We never talkabout stats; just aboutwinning the game. Sure,we throw the ball morethan most teams, but Jakedoesnt like talking abouthis numbers to the pointwhere hes uncomfortableabout it and wants tochange the subject. In theend, he just wants to win.

When asked about hissophomore year, a yearwhich saw Folsom reachthe Nor-Cal Open playoffgame, Browning said itwas a fun year.

I enjoyed playing withmy teammates and fortu-nately I get to play with

many of the same guysthis year, Browning said.Of course, its more funwhen you win and wewere able to do that a lot.Unfortunately, the seasonended with the loss to DeLa Salle, but that drivesyou to get better.

Browning has alreadyreceived scholarshipoffers from Washington,Washington State, Utah

and Boise State. If hes abetter quarterback thisyear than last, expect thislist of schools to at leastdouble over the next year.

Browning ready to lead Bulldog offense

    JakeBrowningthrew fora Califor-nia statesingle-sea-

    son record5,248yards lastseason asa sopho-more.

    FILE PHOTO

Hes got more datain his brain with his

    first year behind him

    and that experience

    really is the most

    important thing. He

    knows what hes

    seeing. Troy Taylor, Brownings coach

    GOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

Folsom Highs football playershave T-shirts which readfear the blue, referring to

the color of their uniforms andthe strength of their team.

This year that blue will extendto their home field, as PrairieCity Stadium on Folsom Highscampus has been outfitted withroyal blue turf with red endzones, sprucing up a green fieldthat badly needed to bereplaced.

The life expectancy for thosefields is seven to 10 years and wegot 10 years out of ours, FolsomHigh coach Kris Richardsonsaid. The seams were coming

up and it was becoming hardand really was becoming a safe-ty issue.

The old turf was put down in2003 and after a decade of use, it

was time for it to be replaced. We got the use we expected

out of it, said Matt Washburn, the Folsom Cordova UnifiedSchool Districts director of facil-ities development. Those fields

typically last that long and wegot a lot of use out of ours withfootball, soccer, marching band, section championship soccergames and more.

The new turf, which alonecosts $400,000, is scheduled tobe completed this week. Its afield that Richardson is excitedabout.

    Coach (Troy) Taylor and I

saw Boise States blue turf first-hand and we talked with thedistrict about having somethingunique and different, Richard-son said. We talked to the play-

ers and they were excited aboutit.

Folsom senior receiver TroyKnox is excited to play on thenew turf.

The old turf was like sandpa-

per and youd get turf burns allthe time, Knox said. The newturf has a different feel to it, butwell get used to it. I think theblue and red color is awesome. I

    love.Washburn said the turf and

installation costs, totaling$700,000, was funded by cellulartower revenue.

While the field boasts FolsomHighs blue team color, some

aspects of the project were notcompleted. The field could bepersonalized further with Fol-som and Bulldogs in each endzone, as well as a bulldog cen-tered at midfield, since the sta-dium is shared with Vista delLagos football team. Thoseimprovements will have to waituntil the Eagles get bleachersand a press box so they can havetheir own stadium.

    Hopefully, well have a bond

measure in the future to finishVistas stadium, Washburn said. Were working on and planningfor a bond measure hopefully inthe next couple of years.

Bulldogs hope opponents fear the blue

The FolsomBulldogs nowhave blue turfto match theirblue uniformsand helmets.

    Skip Albano is back

for another run withGranite Bay, thistime as the schoolssecond head coachBY BILL POINDEXTER

    GOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

This wouldnt be an ide-al situation for manycoaches to be in,

    replacing the only head

coach a high school hasknown since it opened inthe 1990s, a man who ledthe football program tofive Sac-Joaquin Sectionchampionships andstepped down all of twomonths ago after winninga Northern CaliforniaDivision I title in its inau-gural year and the schoolsfirst CIF state crown.

But the Granite Baycommunity has openedits arms to James SkipAlbano, who takes over ashead coach for ErnieCooper.

Im just amazed at theamount of support from

the parents, the players, the community, theschool, he said.

Of course, Albano didntexactly have to ask how toget to the stadium whenhe returned to the cam-pus. His 33-year coachingcareer includes six yearswith the Grizzlies, mostrecently as an offensiveassistant / receivers / fly

backs coach in 2011, whenGranite Bay won its first ofback-to-back section ban-ners. He also was thereceivers/fly backs coachin 2000 and 2001, offensivecoordinator in 2002, line-backers coach in 2008, and

he served as co-headcoach/offensive coordina-tor for the JV team in 2003.Granite Bay won the Divi-sion II section title in 2000.

The night before hisfirst practice as headcoach, Albano said hecouldnt sleep. He had aplan in place, coaches inplace. But still

I havent felt like this in

a long time, he said. Ijust think Im excitedabout it.

Any coach would be,considering two returningplayers include seniorTony Ellison, who ac-counted for 2,498 totalyards (1,185 rushing, 585receiving, 498 in kickoffreturns and 230 in puntreturns) and 19 touch-downs last season, andjunior linebacker CameronSmith, who in his breakout

sophomore year generated196 tackles, four intercep-tions, 3 sacks and re-cruiting interest fromUCLA all the way to LSU.

Albanos children at-tended Granite Bay. SonChris was an all-leaguetight end.

Hes a program guy, said dad, adding that hisjob is to keep the system

Skip Albano is back in Granite Bay colors, havingsucceeded Ernie Cooper as head coach. Albanospent six seasons with the Grizzlies, most recentlyas an offensive assistant in 2011.

My goal is to get these guys ready to play

    GOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

After a month-long hiatus, itshould come as no surprise thatthe Placer Hillmen had a littlerust to shake off when theyreturned to the practice field onAug. 12 to prepare for their Aug.30 home opener.

You could tell that we haventdone football for four weeks butluckily for us it was a lot of littlemistakes that are fixable, saidcoach Joey Montoya, whoseHillmen went 11-1 in 2012 andwon their first Pioneer ValleyLeague title after a 10-0 start. Afew days under our belts andwell be able to fix that up.

Added senior running backTodd Valliere: Its always goodto get out here. We did work onour own, like lifting and stuff, but its good to be back out herewith the team.

    Placer, which kicks its season

off against Central Catholic inAuburn, has a roster of 40 play-ers for the upcoming year.

Junior Clark Pietromonacoand senior Logan Strange arestill battling for the signal-call-

ing position.Montoya once again said that

he likely wont know who hisstarting quarterback is until theweek of the first game.

    In the meantime, with

Pietromonaco and Strangesharing snaps under center, thePlacer offense is working onexecution, hitting openingreceivers and blocking assign-ments.

Defensively, the youthful Hill-men are taking reps with the

    hopes that practice makes per-fect.

The biggest hurdle for thisgroup is youth, Montoya said. Were going to have a lot of newfaces out there this year. Theyare plenty capable but theydont have a lot of varsity experi-ence. With our schedule beingwhat it is, theyre going to haveto grow up fast. The big push forthis team is just to get betterevery week and regardless ofwhat we do during the presea-son, to be playing our best foot-ball during league.

Placer has just two returningstarters on defense Valliere atdefensive back and senior line-backer Robbie Lopez.

For defense, we need to pullour inner animals out and makeother people fear us, said sen-ior Cameron Scott, a bruising 6-foot-1, 225-pound fullback-defensive end.

Youthful Placer Hillmen tune up for new season

Of course, anothernonleague slate of heavy

hitters awaits Golden EaglesBY MIKE RAY

    GOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

In a year of transition in theSierra Foothill League, one con-stant in this years footballchase is to expect the Del OroGolden Eagles to be right in thethick of things.

With three SFL schools Granite Bay, Woodcreek andNevada Union having newhead coaches on the sideline,Casey Taylor is beginning his12th season at the helm of theGolden Eagles.

    And despite playing one of

the tougher schedules aroundthe Sacramento area if not thestate year in and year out, Tay-lors record at Del Oro since2006 is a sparkling 66-24.

This year, not much changesin Loomis as once again theBlack and Gold will play arugged nonleague slate thatincludes James Logan of Union

City, Notre Dame of ShermanOaks, Grant, St. Marys of Stock-ton and, last but not least, leg-endary De La Salle of Concord, which will start the season asthe No. 1 prep team in thenation in several polls.

    Were really excited about

this season, said Taylor, wholast year saw his Golden Eagleswin six of their last seven games

to finish 7-6 and advance to theCIF Sac-Joaquin Section Divi-sion II semifinals. You couldsee it in the kids preparationthis summer. Theres a lot ofanticipation.

Del Oro, two seasonsremoved from reaching a CIFState Bowl Game, may have theexperience this season to beready to make another deeprun into the postseason.

Several key seniors on offensereturn in the form of seniorquarterback Michael Moore, who also played safety last sea-son while starting three games

at signal-caller, running backDylan Kainrath, tight end TylerMeteer and linemen Emileo

and Elias Campos.TeVon Rhyne, a junior, and

Greg Eason, a Highlands trans-fer, look to be threats on offensewhile Tanner Woods, TherinHeryford and Kyle Wells all havegames under their belts on thedefensive side of the ball.

While the SFL race looks to bewide open, Del Oro figures to benose to nose with Granite Bayand Rocklin in the favoritesdepartment.

Our league is a league whereyou cant take a week off, saidTaylor. It should be a battlefrom start to finish.

    Thunder returns top

quarterbackBY JIM LINSDAUGOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

The Rocklin High Schoolfootball program is one of thetop three in arguably the Sac-Joaquin Sections best confer-ence, the Sierra Foothill League.

And they do it by winning thegames they have to.

Under the direction of headcoach Greg Benzel, the Thunderhas missed the playoffs onlyonce since winning the sectionchampionship in 2009. Last

year, Rocklin made the playoffswinning just five games, threein the SFL.

In 2012, the boys in bluehandily defeated NevadaUnion, Woodcreek andRoseville, losing only to leaguepowerhouses Del Oro andGranite Bay by a total of 10points. The Grizzlies went on to

win the state Division I champi-onship last year.Although the Thunder was hit

hard by graduation, they returnone of the best quarterbacks inthe league, Logan Webb. As a

junior, Webb took over the posi-tion when senior quarterbackDaniel Kniffin suffered a shoul-der injury in the second gameof the season.

Webb went on to throw formore than 2,000 yards last year

to rank No. 2 in the SFL. The

only other SFL team that didntgraduate its starting signal-caller was Roseville.

However, Rocklin did gradu-ate its top three receivers and isin need of a stronger runningattack. Running back RyanPatrick, 5-10, 190 pounds, returns. Although Patrick onlyhad 44 carries in 2012, he aver-aged more than 4 yards per car-ry.

    The Thunder lost a dozen

    players from their offensive and

defensive lines, but shouldmore than fill those losses withplayers moving up from lastseasons 9-0-1 junior varsityclub. That JV squad should alsoprovide some rushing andreceiving power as well.

All-SFL lineman Sam Woodsis gone, but building a strongfront wall is a Benzel specialty.Dont be surprised if Rocklinsfinal regular season gameagainst Del Oro Nov. 11 decides

    the league championship.

    Roseville has a big-time

as in 6-8, 290 recruit in Kolton Miller

    BY BILL POINDEXTER

    GOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

The sidelines are widerat Hanson Field onthe Roseville High

School campus this year. The tiger paw at midfieldis new, too, part of thefreshened turf surface, and the Tigers were

breaking it in during con-ditioning drills on thefirst day of practice.

They were a loud, ener-getic bunch, runninghard to catch passes, kicking knees and feethigh and working up aquick, constant sweat ona bearable afternoonwith the sun beatingdown and rubber chips

radiating heat fromunder the artificial sur-face.

Its been just a goodworking mentality fromJune through the sum-mer, Tigers head coachLarry Cunha said as hewatched the drills.

Roseville was 2-8 lastseason, but the atmos-phere among 55 bodiesat Hanson Field was

more 8-2. That was theTigers JV record last sea-

son, and theyre juniorsnow pushing the seniors(who were 9-1 at the JVlevel two years ago) forstarting spots and play-ing time.

Depth is good. Com-petition is good, Cunhasaid. We have a lot backfrom last year.

The talent isnt badeither. Kolton Miller willstand out every time hesteps on the field. Thesenior lineman grewanother inch and gaineda few more pounds in theoffseason. Hes now 6 foot

8, 290 pounds, and has12 (Division I) offers inhis pocket, according toCunha.

Beyond being 6-8, 290,the scholarship offershave flowed in because ofthe fact he plays withgood bend and flex in hisknees, Cunha said. Hehas long reach. Hes quickand agile. But he has togo out and play now.

Miller, Kyle Powers, who started all 10 games

last season as a sopho-more, and Andrew

ORoak return to theoffensive line to help pro-tect senior quarterbackKyle Downie and whatCunha described as anexcellent backfield.Senior Matt Razzanorushed for 712 yards lastseason.

Junior Bryce Crouchtotaled 751 yards rushingand receiving and scoredseven touchdowns, and

Cunha said carriesshould increase for juniorJake Vaughn as the sea-son progresses.

Downie and seniorJonathan Lopez enteredthe 2012 season openerat Cosumnes Oaks stillauditioning to be thestarting quarterback.Downie earned the gigand passed for 269 yards

and five touchdowns inRosevilles 49-42 victoryover Woodcreek in a wildseason finale.

Hell be behind centerwhen Cosumnes Oakscomes to Roseville onAug. 30.

Hes earned it, Cunhasaid, noting Downie has agrasp of Rosevilles multi-ple spread offense thatfeatures four and some-

times five receivers. Itsquite a bit to learn. He

    knows it, and hes com-fortable.

The ending didnt turnout all bad for Lopezeither. He moved out toreceiver and had aneight-catch, 165-yard,two-touchdown coming-out party in Rosevillesvictory over Woodcreek.

He had a little minicareer that game, Cunhasaid.

Returning on thedefensive side is senior

Jordan Kunaszyk, nowlisted at 6-2, 218. He had77 tackles, three sacksand two fumble recover-ies last season and is 40pounds heavier.

    Wildcats are a solid team

    BY JIM LINSDAU

GOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICEWhat might be Whitney

High School football headcoach Michael Gimenezsbiggest problem this sea-son is choosing a startinglineup from a stable over-flowing with potentialstarters.

Its the Wildcats finalseason in the Capital Ath-letic League and they willlikely closeout their

tenure with a league titleand a strong run in theSac-Joaquin Section Divi-sion II Playoffs. AlthoughGimenez has expressedconcern the Cats mightlack in size at some posi-tions, he returns somestrong all-league players.

    Southpaw quarterbackDrew Romo, 6-3, 205

pounds, was the No. 4 sig-nal caller in the CAL lastseason. He threw justthree interceptions in2012.

Also returning is all-purpose player Kyle

McCray (6-3, 215), wholed the junior varsity to aleague title playing quar-

terback two years ago. Jor-dan Traynor, 6-3, 225, isalso an all-purpose playerand was a leading tacklerat linebacker last season.

Gimenezs wide openoffense brings into playvirtually everyone. Eight-een players carried theball last season, includingreturning running backKwane Wilkinson, whohas great speed. Romo

also passed to 15 differentreceivers, who hauled in atotal of 85 aerials.

Look for Whitney toscore prolifically and giveup yardage grudgingly.

    Under new co-head

coaches Jason and KyleStowers, Woodcreek HighSchool football has oneword on its mind: Tough-ness.

The word is thrownaround in every drill.Coaches preach it andbark it. Players talk aboutit. After more than adecade without a winningrecord, the program isready to take on the new

mantra. For us, it is summed up

in one word. We want todevelop a sense of tough-ness where our playersbecome physical and areable to compete in theSFL, which is like the SECweek in and week out,Jason Stowers said.

    The brothers come from

winning traditions. JasonStowers spent 11 seasonsat Colfax as an assistant

coach and, along with KyleStowers, the Falcons wonthree Sac-Joaquin Sectionchampionships. JasonStowers spent the lastthree seasons as an assis-tant at Del Oro, which wontwo section titles.

The two are intense andorganized, which comesfrom years of tutelageunder Casey Taylor at DelOro and Tony Martello at

    Colfax.The players at Wood-

creek have taken notice.I am super excited

about our two new headcoaches, senior runningback Mitchell Layton said. They bring a lot moreintensity and fire to thisteam, and it has reallyhelped us become

tougher. Thats the keyword, toughness, becausewe need to really become

tough in this league. Its not just the leagueschedule Woodcreek needsto worry about. The Tim-berwolves open the seasonAug. 30 at Folsom, general-ly regarded as one of thetop programs in the state.Woodcreek also travels toCapital Athletic Leaguechamp Antelope on Sept.20 and to Pioneer ValleyLeague champ Placer on

    Oct. 4.After practice, Jason

Stowers stood over hisplayers and remindedthem that some punditshave the Timberwolvesslated to go 1-9. Then heasked, Do you feel like a1-9 player?

    The response was aresounding, No.

Year two in the spreadoffense produced thebest season in Vista

del Lago football history. The Eagles scored 563

points in 14 games, anaverage of 46.9 points pergame, and reached theDivision IV section cham-pionship game before los-ing to Oakdale, 22-9. Theteam won 12 games, los-ing only to Oakdale and

Oak Ridge, in their finaland first game of the sea-son, respectively.

A big reason for the suc-cess of the offense camefrom the play of quarter-back Matt Jimison, whoearned the starting jobearly in the season andposted spectacular num-bers for a sophomore,

throwing for 2,592 yardsand 37 touchdowns, while

completing 60 percent ofhis passes.I came in ready to

compete and I knew mychance would come,Jimison said of last sea-son. Once I got myopportunity, I ran with it.I was confident in myability and just waited formy shot and never lookedback.

    With his sophomore

year behind him, Jimisonis now ready for his junioryear. Expectations arehigh, as the Eagles wouldlike nothing more than toreach the Division IV titlegame again this year, except this year they wantto win it.

With a years experienceunder his belt, Jimison is

confident as ever, but hesalso excited because he

knows hes a better quar-terback this year. The 62junior added nearly 20pounds to his frame andstarts the season biggerand stronger at 200pounds.

I wanted to improvemy footwork and mypocket moves, Jimisonsaid. I worked with myquarterback coach, WillHewlett, in the Bay Area

every weekend. At timeslast year I was slow onpicking up coverages andgetting the ball out and Idefinitely think Iveimproved in those areas.

Mike Struebing, Vistasnew head coach, promot-ed from quarterbackcoach after Chris Jonesresigned in the spring,

agrees with Jimison.Matt did a very good

job managing our offenselast year, said Struebing. We asked him to do a tonof things and he did agreat job. Last year hetended to stare downsome things and some-times didnt know what todo with the ball, so in theoffseason we reallyworked on him beingclear with his keys andwhere to go with the ball.

We want him to get rid ofthe ball quicker.

Struebing said one ofJimisons strengths is inhis preparation.

Hes put a lot of time inwatching film and withchalk talk, Struebingsaid. Hes done a goodjob over the summeridentifying his keys, read-ing it and going throughhis progressions. I thinkhell be tremendously bet-ter this year.

Jimison is not onlyexcited for the season, butalso excited with the tal-ent surrounding him onoffense.

Ive got a great groupto work with that makemy job so much easier,Jimison said. Ive got agreat line with some big

guys up front like tacklesPat Roche and CooperValencia. Weve got goodreturning receivers inBrad Rittenhouse, TylerKaim and Jacob Jones andrunning back Josh Pfefferis a great teammate whoworks hard.

Jimison said he has nopersonal goals hes aimingfor this season. His onlygoal is to lead his team to

a state championship. We know we have to

work twice as hard to getback to where we were

last year, Jimison said. Were a self-motivatedgroup. I think executionwill be the key. We havethe talent and we have

guys who want to work.We just have to get betterevery week.

    Struebing added, The

only statistic that mattersis wins and losses. I havebig expectations for ouroffense. Weve got somereturning players who are

fluid with what weredoing. I look for ouroffense to produce andmove the football.
