Make plans now for Cardinal Family Weekend 2013 at the University of Louisville for September 20-22! Family Weekend 2013 is a Cardinal tradition for the entire campus community. this event will be a wonderful opportunity for students to share with family members their favorite places and activities at UofL and help them learn about their lives at the University.

Facts About the University

• total Enrollment for the Fall 2012 semester was 22,293 students, which includes 15,893 undergraduates, 6,400 graduate students, and 1,485 professional students studying medicine, law, and dentistry.

• the University has three campuses. the main Belknap campus spans over 287 acres and is situated three miles from downtown Louisville. the health Sciences campus is situated downtown and houses medical and health related programs and includes the University of Louisville hospital. the 243-acre Shelby campus is located in eastern Jefferson County.

• the University of Louisville has all 50 states, 117 of the 120 kentucky counties, and 101 countries represented in its student population.

White squirrels

a few albino (white) squirrels roam campus. When you spot one, it’s a sign of a good day. Or, well, at least you’ll feel like you’ve accomplished something special for the day.

Cravin’ the Kastle

Celebrate your student with a soft serve treat. dairy kastle, on Eastern Parkway just a few blocks from campus, is a famous student hangout- and a UofL tradition. Owner george hayden – a 1976 graduate – says he’s kept dairy kastle’s small town feel, friendly staff, low prices (cash only!) and generous portions from back when he used to eat there as a student.

The Thinker

the thinker statue that sits in front of grawemeyer hall is the first large-scale bronze cast of the thinker and claims priority as the most original. French sculptor auguste rodin personally supervised the casting in Paris. it came out of the mold dec. 25, 1903, and was completed in early 1904. the estate of lawyer and art lover arthur hopkins bought the statue for the city of Louisville. the city decided to put the thinker at UofL and it has sat in front of grawemeyer hall since 1949. to learn more on the UofL icon visit louisville.edu/about/thinker.

The CArDs Cheer

in 1913 the Louisville Cardinal Bird was chosen to be the school mascot, and sometime after that the CardS cheer was created. now it’s one of the first things new students and their families learn when they come on campus. a trademark at athletic games and campus events, the cheer also is the universal (and loudest) way to show your UofL pride.

you can also show your UofL pride by singing along with the classic “all hail UofL!” or with “Fight! UofL!” When they break out at UofL games and other university functions they drive Cards fans wild. It’s A barnburner

By the time your student graduates, some of their fondest UofL memories will have been made at the famous george J. howe red Barn. the red Barn hosts a variety of events from orientation to graduation fairs and everything in between. Founded by two UofL students in 1969, the building—which once housed the Caldwell tank Co. manufacturing operation—has been a gracious host for everything from guest speakers to punk concerts. Many campus organizations use the red Barn for fundraisers, cookouts, concerts, competitions and award ceremonies. this year it is expected to host more than 700 (700!) events, along with giving away scholarships and endowments through its programs.

Athletic Conference Dominance

Want to talk about commanding a conference? during the 2011-2012 athletic year, UofL teams won a school record of 10 Big East titles, more than any other school. Our recent acceptance to become the newest member of the atlantic Coast Conference (aCC) for the 2014 athletic year came weeks before the Men’s Football team earned the Sugar Bowl title defeating the Florida gators 33-23. Both Men’s and Women’s basketball teams reached the 2013 nCaa national Championship with the men’s team capturing the national title. there is no doubt Cardinal athletics will continue their success as we move forward!

to show our school pride and connect with the Cardinal family worldwide, we’ve got one move: Flashing an “L.” you’ll do this when you pose for photos, when a UofL team is successful, or really any time the moment grabs you. Using your right hand, stick out your thumb to the side while raising your index and middle fingers and bending the ring and pinky. that’s it, now you’re part of the tradition. try it!

Joining a fraternity or sorority is one of the best ways for your student to get involved, to network and especially make new friends on campus. Many UofL greeks have gone on to be successful in their careers and become major contributors to the university and its well-being. the Cultural Center is a hub for students of all backgrounds looking for a place to connect. the center itself offers programming for events like roundtable talks and lectures, and advises student groups. no matter your students’ background, the staff at the center can point your student to various student groups that may interest them.

UofL’s intramural and recreational Sports program offers more than 50 activities each year—including kickball, tennis, dodgeball, and flag football. if your student is interested they can form their own team to participate or join a “free agent” list and get picked up by a team looking for a few extra members.

the office of First year initiatives (Fyi) is comprised of a network of great people who are committed to making sure your student has a successful and fun first year at the University of Louisville from the moment Summer Orientation is over until Finals Week in the spring semester!

a few of the programs you’ll want to get your student involved in that this office provides are:

• CaPS (Civic, academic, Personal, and Social) Leader Summer Mentor Program. this is where each new first-year student gets an upper-class student mentor who checks-in with them online during the summer.

• Book-in-Common is also a great way for incoming students to get involved before the semester starts. Every year UofL selects a book for the incoming class that relates to the experiences they’ll have making the transition to college. this year’s book is, “this i Believe: the Personal Philosophies of remarkable Men and Women.”

• Welcome Week is one of the bigger events the Fyi office puts on! Welcome Week 2013 is aug. 21-25! there are over 50 activities for students, parents, and families happening during those 5 days full of fun and excitement that you and your student won’t want to miss. Be sure to check the Fyi website for the full schedule.

The Office of Civic engagement, leadership and servicelouisville.edu/leadership

this office provides service and leadership opportunities throughout the year. it offers structured programming like Freshman LEad, which cultivates leadership skills in freshman and the Engage Lead Serve Board, an ongoing group that develops and organizes service opportunities for all students. Some of the offices programming includes monthly programs for students to serve at an array of local non-profit organizations, called SOUL (Service Outreach Uniting Louisville) events and alternative Spring Breaks where students have the opportunity to help other national and international communities.

the University of Louisville international Service Learning Program (iSLP) is an interdisciplinary program focused on “Community health and Safety” that allows your student to experience international travel and gain course credit while doing so. the students and faculty collaborate to create educational programs that address human and community needs, then go to one of the following countries: Belize, Botswana, Croatia, the Philippines, or trinidad and tobago; and present their programs.

housing and residence Life works to keep your student engaged and part of campus life through a variety of educational and social events. Staff also work individually with students to make sure they feel welcomed, supported, celebrated and a part of the campus scene.

the traditional halls are the most cost-conscious options on campus. the rooms are typically double occupancy, with a limited number of single occupancy rooms located in each building. these halls are coed buildings where genders are separated by floors or wings.

all UofL first-year students under 21 will be required to live on campus, unless living at home with a parent or guardian.University of Louisville students enrolled in college for the first time in the fall semester after high-school graduation must reside for two semesters in one of the on-campus residence halls mentioned above.

the University of Louisville takes student safety very seriously. the department of Public Safety (dPS) is a campus service organization responsible for law enforcement, crime prevention, emergency services and parking management for the University of Louisville. Services are provided on a 24-hour basis to students, faculty and staff, as well as visitors to the University of Louisville. Campus dPS takes great pride in its advancing community policing efforts and works closely with the Louisville Metro Police department.

In addition to 24-hour police campus patrol and response services, the uofl DPs provides:

• Campus Safety Escort Program. this is a free service offered to any member of the University

from dusk to dawn, any day of the year. Call (502) 852-6111 to request an escort anywhere within on campus boundaries and up to four blocks off campus.

• Emergency Blue Light Phones located throughout campus provide 24/7 response. the caller’s location is provided directly to the dispatcher for 9-1-1 and all Blue Light calls.

• UofL alerts emergency notification system. One of UofL’s emergency communication modes. these text messaging alerts give you the most up-to-date emergency information. Students and Families are strongly encouraged to sign up for UofL alerts at louisville.edu/alerts

at some point during college, your student will unfortunately get sick. if your student is in this spot they should go ahead and call for an appointment at Campus health Services, located in Cardinal Station on Central Boulevard. it’s nestled between the baseball and football stadiums. Campus health Services provides preventive and acute care for students. they also offer women’s health services; psychiatric services, including medication

management; travel medicine; free flu shots; immunizations and allergy shots.

also, if your student is looking to better their health, they should visit the Office of health Promotion, a service of Campus health Services. the program offers peer mentoring, programming to help you learn about things like making better food choices and exercise classes like yoga.

if your student is looking for a meal or just a mid-day energizing snack, UofL offers plenty of options, with more eateries opening each year. in fact, when they’re on campus they are never more than five minutes from some place to grab a bite.

UofL partners with Sodexo to bring a number of affordable, popular eateries of all sorts to campus, from Einstein Bros. Bagels and Jazzman’s Café, to Mcalister’s Select deli, damon’s grill and many more.

UofL’s dining Services joins the state of kentucky and the university’s own health initiative in an effort to improve campus health awareness, plus the restaurants promote sustainability by buying local whenever possible.

The Ville Grill Diningthe Ville grill is the university’s new all-you-care-to-eat dining restaurant at University tower apartments. and when we say it has something for everyone with its five dining options, you can rest assured it does!

let the Dean helplouisville.edu/dos no clue where to go for your question? no matter the question, if you don’t have the answer, stop at the dean of Students’ Office in the SaC. the entire staff is ready to help. it’s their job to promote a positive learning experience and give your student the opportunities they need to succeed not just academically, but personally, too. think your students’ rights have been violated? dealing with student crisis and need assistance? We hope none of these things ever happens to you, but if it should, the dean of Students Office is there for you.

Sometimes the university can become overwhelming, complicating your student’s academics and life in general. Some students become so frustrated, their coursework suffers and they may want to drop out. that is why students need an advocate—someone who is on their side, who has a thorough knowledge of UofL, not just from one unit’s perspective, but from a broad perspective. the student advocate teaches how the academic system works, where to find information and how to get the help needed.

academic advising at the University of Louisville is an on-going, intentional, educational partnership dedicated to student academic success. academic advisors can help your student investigate degree programs and careers, and be of assistance if your student experiences academic difficulty. the university has created an exciting initiative, Flight Plan, which allows your student to stay on course to graduate in four years or in the timeframe of their choicelouisville.edu/flightplan. during your student’s first year they can meet with an academic advisor to discuss the flight plan options.

the University Career Center offers comprehensive services and programs to help students clarify their academic and career goals, gain practical experience through mock interviews, internships and cooperative education experiences, and identify employment opportunities and options. the Career Center also hosts fairs throughout the school year and provides every student with a Career Link account. Career Link allows students to begin building their resume from the moment they arrive on campus.

FAFsA Informationthe Free application for Federal Student aid is the application for federal grants, work-study, and loans as well as some state and institutional aid programs. File the FaFSa online at http://fafsa.gov. We recommend students to file the FaFSa as soon as possible each year after January 1.

Award Notification & Aid Disbursementaward notifications are sent via email. First-year students will also receive a paper award letter in the mail. the award notification will direct students to their Ulink account. On Ulink, you can accept, reduce, or decline loan offers. Scholarships and grants are automatically listed on Ulink as accepted.

Starting the week prior to the start of fall classes, the Student Financial aid Office will complete a final review of each student’s eligibility, and will begin disbursing all available financial aid funds to the Bursar’s Office. the Bursar’s Office will then post that aid to your student’s account. disbursed financial aid that exceeds a student’s balance is considered excess or residual funds. residual funds will be distributed through higherOne.

higherOne CardUniversity of Louisville has partnered with higherOne, a financial services company focused solely on higher education, to offer faster delivery of refunds to students. all refunds are processed by higherOne. the University will nOt issue refund checks, so your student MUSt use their card to access the higherOne Website and choose an option for receiving any refund due to them. the UofL higherOne Card with the MasterCard logo provides students with two options on how to receive their refunds. the options are - Easy refund to the Oneaccount or aCh transfer (direct deposit) to the student’s bank account. Students will receive their UofL higherOne Card shortly after they register for classes in their first semester at the University of Louisville. the card will be mailed to the current address on file with the university.

The university of louisville Financial Aid office provides walk-in

counseling Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and

the Call Center (502) 852-5511 is also open during those times. the University of Louisville is required by law to comply with the Family Educational rights and Privacy act (FErPa). this law establishes guidelines to protect the privacy of student records and to provide students access to these records. this means that students have the right to keep their records private and that the university is prohibited from sharing a student’s FErPa-protected information with anyone without a written release.

this does not mean that information is not available to you as parents. Students may share information with parents or guardians by the completing the following steps. however at any point, students can change their Ulink Pin and these steps do not guarantee that student information can be shared.

• have your student set up a pin on Ulink, ulink.louisville.edu > Log in > Student Services >Personal information > Pin. have your student share their Pin with you and then please provide the student id number and Pin when you request information for your student. Even as the parent or legal guardian who has the students’ id and pin, many offices may still require that the student is the direct person speaking in order to release any information. Students still have the discretion of changing their Ulink Pin at any time.
