PREZ SEZ FINALE It’s a strange feeling wri ng my last Prez Sez, to realise that no long‐er will I have to sit in front of a blank screen, Deadline looming, wondering how to make a start. It was the late Douglas Adams, speaking in a radio interview, who said that he loved deadlines, “ they make such a lovely whooshing noise as they speed by!” With the ire of the Editor always at the back of my mind, I have needed The Deadline to spur my recalcitrant brain into ac on. Once I get started, everything is fine, it [the verbal diarrhoea] just seems to flow out. Perhaps procras na on is innate in my make up.

In keeping with a VSCC tradi on of some standing, during my term as president, all my cars have ceased to func on, so that the person who should be leading from the front is seen to be si ng on the side lines. A er more than two years off the road with a broken propeller sha , I finally got my Morris running only to find that it’s propensity to blow head gaskets had not in any way benefi ed from the rest cure!

In the mean me, number four piston in the Riley took upon itself to emulate those in Georges Roesch’s Talbots and become a two‐piece item. It is only last weekend that I got it back on the road, a er more than three months off. Having re‐built and installed my spare motor, I was peculiarly reluctant to a empt to start it, choosing instead to re‐fit all sorts of peripheral bits, rather than just get in and push the bu on. I knew my fear was irra onal, but the thought of what I might have to do should it not start, such as pull the motor out to re‐do the valve ming, was the cause of this reluctance. In the end, I had to do it. I climbed into the car, turned on the igni on and waited a few seconds for the fuel to pump up to the carbies, pulled out the choke and pressed the starter bu on. The engine fired up straight away and a er the usual re‐se ng of the tappets and a small adjustment to the igni on ming, it’s now running sweetly. My fears were a crisis of confidence – I knew I could do the job, but was worried that I might have made a mistake. A bit like the Presidency, really.

And before I do make one last major stuff up, I would like to thank all those who have served on the Commi ee during my tenure, not just for your work in running the Club, but more importantly, for your support and advice when things have not been so easy. I would like to single out Russell Meehan for my special thanks, for his work as Secretary and hours of tedious work amending the Club’s rules and regu‐la ons, but especially for unfailingly providing me with an agenda for every mee ng, thus reducing my public emissions of ums and ahs to an acceptable minimum.

All those who have helped turn Rob Roy into our premier speed event deserve my special thanks and I must also thank all those non‐commi ee members who have helped out over the last few years, not just with organising and running events, but also all the other tasks around the Club, such as suppers, library, cleaning, washing the dishes and providing the President with sage advice, whether he asked for it, or not!

Thanks also to Ashley Tracey and now our Editorial Team of Mike Bellair and Graeme Steinfort for their sterling work in producing the Newsle er.

Finally, it is my pleasure to wish John Lakeland and his Commi ee all the best and implore you, the members, to show your support by a ending as many events as you are able. A er all, you are the Club and thanks to you all. I have enjoyed it.

The latest UK VSCC’s Bulle n is to hand and Kim Brownbill gets a men on in both words and a picture. See last month’s Newsle er, but he is photographed on their recent Edwardian and Light Car Rally, and gets a men on in the text. The report was obviously biased as unusually there were no photos of Aus n 7s (there were some of them compe ng at other events). That great Conspiracy Theorist, Stephen Denner, almost agreed with me, but suggested that I consult with Hippo who knows all about these things;

Brendan Dillon is ge ng conserva ve, and becoming concerned about brakes on his Vee Twin Special. First he must make it go, but there is obviously delay in the building process as he looks for new accommoda on, having sold his Villa in Caulfield. He has looked as far at Castlemaine, but the locals are ght lipped about what is available in the Village!

Peter Donald is in the process of ge ng a reverse gear for the GN Morris Vitesse. The Originality Grand Master is somewhat concerned and reports have gone in to Steely eyed Peter Fleming on the ma er!

Peter Donald tries out the “mock up” of Brendan Dillon’s V Twin Pra & Whitney Special

Daniel Zampa ’s Bull Nose Morris is progressing towards being a running chassis and should be ready in me for the Fes val of Sloth at Jim Thompson’s Lancefield/Kyneton property. There has been a point of difference between an unnamed contributor as how much polish there is to be on the sump!

Daniel Zampa is fi ng a large SU Carbie to his Morris Cowley which now stands on its wheels;

Jim McIndoe has relinquished the post of President of the Morris Register and would now have some me to play with his Aus n 7 in prepara on for Peter Flemming’s Fes val of Sloth;

It’s amazing what a run up Rob Roy will do! Tom Denner ran Steve’s 12/50 Alvis up the hill at the August RR mee ng, and now has joined the UK VSCC. They are about to become another father/son combina on in compe on! His membership records that he has an MG PA, and in the UK he resides at ”Vauxhall”. Is the la er a foretaste of things to come?

“Yandoit” Andy – Andrew Kimpton to us, has achieved quite fame as the builder of the Petals on the feature at the Chelsea Flower Show. The Australian Entry was the overall winner of the Com‐pe on, and in the TV show about the event, the Designer gave Andy a special men on in mak‐ing the ‘petals’ within three days! The entry won a Gold Medal which means that the VSCC has such a VIP within its ranks;

On the down side! Andy has received a commission from Peter Donald to build some wooden mudguards for the GN Morris Vitesse. Peter intends to obtain a Permit so that he can drive the GN on the road. The ‘exposed chains’ may deter many, but not our Doctor Peter!

The Club has been taking a subscrip on to ”The Automobile” magazine, and whilst in the Li‐brary during the recent Commi ee Mee ng, I no ced that several recent Edi ons are missing! They are ‘stamped’ as belonging to the Club Library, and if you have taken them home, can they be returned so that in due course they can be bound for the Club’s Collec on;

On the subject of the Club’s Motoring Library it is proposed that it be opened at 10am on the morning of each S.U.S.P.E.C.T.S Wednesday mee ng – which is the Wednesday a er the Club’s Monthly mee ng on the 2nd Friday of the Month.

A recent addi on to the Clubs Library was a bound copy of the Club’s 2012 Newsle ers. There has been a dona on of Books and Newsle ers from the Estate of Ted Hider Smith, which are to be indexed;

Phillip Schumak has been out and about on the veteran car rally driving the “Black Swan” Syndi‐cate’s Prince Henry Vauxhall. This is appropriate in the 100th year of the 30/98 Vauxhall, whilst Peter Latreille is guiding the Iso a on the same event.

There was an a endance of VSCC members at Shepparton for the display by the Veteran Car Club on Wednesday the 18th September 2013. Messrs Hands, Smallacombe, Flemming and the writer went up from Melbourne, while Roger Rayson and Ashley Tracey came up from Castle‐maine. Geoff and Marion Hood and John Kent were also in a endance, and we were welcomed by the VCC President David Wright who was a VSCC member and Graeme who was present and running his Star. David Wright’s F.I.A.T Zero was not par cipa ng.

Chester McKaige is spending me in Tasmania, instruc ng a Builder to put up his new workshop and hopes to be in residence during October;

The ex Richard Stanley/John Lawson’s AC Amilcar is currently for sale at Du ons in South Yar‐ra, and there have been some overseas enquiry!

At Rob Roy Historic Hillclimb a Mans Seiko watch was handed in with a broken band. Mike Herlihy from the MG Car Club has it and he may be contacted on [email protected];

The S.U.S.P.E.C.T.S meet on the 25th September 2013 with Messrs Bacon, Kirkpatrick, Catlow, O’Neill, Schulz, Flemming, Zampa e Tyrrell, Lakeland and Nantes a ended, but the only Club Car there was the writer’s MG TA;

Last month’s ‘Mystery Photo’ was of the Straker Squire of George Brooks of Adelaide, taken at

Mt Gambier on a Vic/SA VSCC Rally in 1963. Chester McKaige was first to telephone me person‐ally. He had the “Who and What” Correct, and understandably did not have the ‘when and Where’. John Kent was another to iden fy the car a few hours a er the email Newsle er reached him. I was the photographer, and a ended that rally in my Lagonda, driven by Bruce Smeaton as I had a broken finger from a water Polo ‘incident’. Rod Amos also iden fied the car and has seen it quite recently in the Birdwood Motor Museum in South Australia;

Soon – to – be ex‐President Stephen Hands is on the look out for a rear drive Toyota Corolla for Gina to do the shopping!! Gina gets embarrassed driving the Mine Carrying Morris to the shops, and it does cause a ‘s r’ up at Chadstone , especially when Security is called;

The Na onal Pre War MG Rally at Bathurst on the 25th to 27th October next will have the prom‐ised a endance of the famous ex Les Murphy Q type and P type MGs, at least two K3s and the Peter Briggs NE MG. The venue is Bathurst and will be one week a er the Bathurst 1000. The Vice President of the “Mother Club” (VSCC) Tim Shellshear has all the details on 0418 666 952. The venue is Rydges Hotel (which is situated on the Bathurst Circuit itself. Over 70 pre war MGs are expected;

The Commi ee received a brochure from Bloke’s Funeral of 9802 6333 which firm offer a Fu‐neral Service which reflects on the life of men generally! The company offers vintage hearses etc. – thought you may be interested!

The Aus n 7 Club had a successful Wings and Wheels event at Maryborough on the 15th Sep‐tember 2013. The gate saw 1000 spectators a end. There were over 70 cars on the Saturday Tour. A few of our members a ended, including Phillip Hallo, Glen Bishop Allen Tyrrell (all A7), Patrick Ryan 30‐98, John Clucas Wolseley Hornet, Keith Roberts MacDonberg Spl No report about the flying!

The VSCC Commi ee has considered a change of Venue for the January Informal Members mee ng, which will move to the Yarra Bend Park near the Corben Oval which is on Melways Map 2D grid references E7. The venue is ‘off’ Heidelberg Road, and easily reached via Eastlink and Hoddle Street. More Details in the December &January Newsle ers.

It is also proposed that at this January ‘informal’ to present the major Club Trophies e.g., Vick‐ery and PVT. The set of circumstances occasioning these changes are as follows:‐ Firstly, the Traffic round Albert Park and South Melbourne has become so heavy that it is a deterrent to members coming in their Club Cars; Secondly the ‘new’ venue is well serviced with undercover shelter, plenty of free parking, nearby toilets and clean bbqs; Thirdly, our annual presenta on lunches have become so under represented by Trophy Winners that they have become a drain on the Club’s financial resources and involve an inordinate amount of me by the Club Captain in telephoning winners to a end and collect their trophies! Correspondence will be entered into!!!!!

John Clucas, he of the Wolseley Hornet, is wri ng a book on – Yes Wolseley Hornets having just completed one on SS Jags. May have to get him involved in repor ng for the N/L.

MYSTERY PHOTO

As you will have seen above a number of people correctly iden fied last month’s mystery photo. For

good measure our star car iden fier John Kent even iden fied the bogged car in the Alex Bryce Two

Day Trial flyer as an Itala.

This month’s mystery photo was taken quite close to home at a me when Graeme and I were possibly

teenagers or not far past that stage. Please send your responses to Graeme as I will be away on holiday

next month.

ALEX BRYCE TWO DAY RALLY – DAY 1

I was only able to a end one day of this event so I volunteered to act as an official. The start was at a branch of those Sco sh restaurants at Caldermeade where I found vari‐ous entrants adding extra clothing and be‐moaning that the weather had deteriorated since leaving Mel‐bourne. It wasn’t raining and it did‐n’t rain all day although it looked dreary at mes. Mark McKibbin was the organizer in charge of the start driving his Type 35 Buga and nearby was the Type 57 of John Shellard. There were three Lagonda Rapiers of the Jacobsons, Ted Geer‐mans and Bruce Rodgers and two Vauxhall 30‐98’s of Peter Holbeach and Glynn Farrell. Geoff Murdoch had his two children protected by a rear screen in the 20.9 HP Sunbeam and Noel Cunningham appeared at Toora in his 24/60 model. All were open to the elements, in fact the only hood I saw was on John Lake‐land’s Triumph at lunch, a er he had by‐passed my control. From the start there was a short run along the highway to Mc Don‐ald’s Track, a deligh ul undula ng ridge road giving beau ful views, through Nyora and Poowong to Ranceby where the route went south to Korumburra. Once again the highway was joined un l Leongatha where the route diverted to Dumbalk then crossed over the highway at Meeniyan to loop around through Fish Creek, of course, to Foster. Another run along the highway brought entrants to my control at a le turn in Toora towards a wind farm. Entrants were required to nomi‐nate the average speed they would do to the end of the sec on in near‐by Welshpool. Most nominated a conserva ve speed as the route involved a long climb, but Mark

Compe tors obviously well rugged up at the start. Top: Ted

Burns threw cau on out the door and nominated a speed twice as fast as most of the other entrants. He told me at lunch that he had a big try to a ain the nominated speed without luck and also because in his haste he missed a turn, so went further and did a WD. I doubt that he took me to admire the views afford‐ed over the countryside, Corner Inlet and Wilsons Promontory beyond. A er an excellent lunch at the hotel the entrants had to get to Traralgon via a sealed route (except for 5 kms) through loca ons that avoided the main road from Yarram. There was no ming but it was a bit tes ng finding the correct way up the Tarra Valley Rd into the Tarra Bul‐ga Na onal Park. The road into the park became increasingly narrow, winding, steep, wet and covered in debris as it approached the high point at Balook. There was ample evidence of the recent destruc on of parts of the forest by bush fires with large areas of bare, tall silver/grey ghosts reminiscent of those le be‐hind by the 1939 fires, which have only recently been submerged in the re‐growth. It was a terrific drive, I was in‐spired to drive down the mountain and back up again. The driving eased of as we went down the other side of the moun‐tain to Traralgon past Miners View, which gives a view over the huge Loy Yang coal mining works, to the very com‐fortable overnight accommoda on at the LaTrobe Conven on Centre. The experiences of the day were dis‐cussed over pre‐dinner drinks and an enjoyable meal and most had re red before the management sent the last few stragglers to bed at 10.00 pm, more for their benefit than ours, but no‐one ob‐jected. Unfortunately it was raining lightly next morning so the day may not have been as enjoyable and I expect that a few more hoods would have appeared. I was sorry that I couldn’t stay for the second day but I intend to use route for a Lancia Register event.

ALEX BRYCE TWO DAY RALLY – DAY 2

The day started with typically fine Gippsland weather, that is it was not snowing or slee ng and was only raining a li le. The first task of the day a er the English breakfast was to calculate the average speed to Willow Grove, but with the catch of the ming star ng with the giving out of the instruc ons. Needless to say there was more consterna on when the control was not at Willow Grove but some me before, never mind. Unusually for Gippsland, the weather changed to sunny and re‐mained that way for the rest of the day. Even if the weather had im‐proved the ques ons became de‐cidedly cryp c and roads con nual‐ly changed eleva on and direc on usually at the same me. The big test for the two wheel brakers was the plunge down to Noojee where we enjoyed good cup of coffee while we waited for the brakes to cool. Noel Cunningham was most put out that the Red Par‐rot Cafe with its wide selec on of s cky buns had been taken over by a horde of two wheeled people so had to rough it at the pub with the rest of us. With sun screen applied we took to the road again stopping at the Trestle Bridge for a clue then onto Yarra Junc on via that lovely winding road just about free of traffic, with the occasional distrac on of looking for clues like "Un dy Friend" the answer to this one was Messmate (Rd) not "Mark" as John Shellard answered (I'm not sure what he was thinking). The last sec on from Yarra Junc on to Gembrook was free of ques ons as I could not think of any and figured everyone else probably needed a rest anyway. Although we did state where fuel was avail‐able Bernie & Helen Jacobson thought the Lagonda needed a drink in a most inconvenient place so had to make a detour to Emerald. The rest of us headed to Tonibuk via a tes ng dirt road with suspension devouring potholes, I may have to visit the den st but otherwise the des na on made it all worthwhile. As the sun set in the west over the grape vines at Jinks Creek Winery no more than two standard drinks were consumed by the survivors and as there was no lynching I think the day went well. SUMMARY OF ASSOCIATION OF MOTORING CLUBS DELEGATES MEETING HELD AT THE CHEVROLET CLUBROOMS ON 19‐8‐2013

1. The AOMC is s ll in a very strong financial posi on and only two member clubs have failed to pay their dues.

2. The commi ee is s ll in desperate need of replacement and the treasurer would like to resign at the next AGM. The president suggested that all club delegates should look at their own clubs to see if they had people who would be prepared to take on roles within the AOMC commi ee.

3. The thorny and perennial problem with differences between the AOMC and the Federa on of Veteran Vintage and Classic Vehicle Clubs raised its head. It was considered that it is about me that both the AOMC and the Federa on spoke with the one voice as many club delegates are members of both organisa ons (as is the VSCC). It is difficult to understand how ideas can differ so much from one organisa on to the other.

4. The guest speaker gave an overview of the process of replacing wood grain veneers on vintage and historic cars. He was not willing to discuss either the materials or the applica on of the products used in restora on work. When drawn on its resistance to UV light he made li le com‐ment.

5. Club Plate Scheme. There was an extended discussion and Rod Amos outlined the sequence of events that have taken place un l now and the discussions with VicRoads over heavily modified vehicles, and the proposals that these vehicles would need to comply with codes VS18 and VSB14. There is another mee ng scheduled with VicRoads this week. It would seem at this me that there is an impasse between VicRoads and the AOMC and no doubt the problem outlined in point 3 above is not helping a delicate situa on. All clubs were urged to write to the AOMC ex‐pressing support for its stance and wherever possible ci ng examples of vehicles which have been modified for many years without considera on of VS18 and VSB14 (which didn’t exist at the me) and which vehicles have previously been accepted for full registra on or on the for‐mer club permit scheme. VS18 was last updated in 2011 and VSB14 was introduced in 2009.

6. Australian Historic Motoring Federa on Mee ng in ACT last week. No representa ve from AOMC was present.

7. General Business. S ll some issues with VicRoads over CPS renewals. All clubs should alert their members to check their renewals making sure they are correctly dated and for members to keep a copy of their receipts. Some members have found their cars to be unregistered and it is too late to find this out 12 months a er the event.

This report is based on an item in the Alvis Car Club Newsle er. By way of an update, Rod Amos is able to add that there have been further mee ngs and quite a lot of "off‐line" discussions with VicRoads and in some respects some progress has been made but in other ways we are s ll in serious disagree‐ment. The Federa on's stance and tac cs are a significant problem, and an unreasonable amount of effort has to be devoted to circumnaviga ng them. The number of clubs/members which support their posi on is ny but they con nue to generate a lot of noise and interference. But this is an issue that only that organisa on's clubs can do anything about ‐ and they don't choose to. At this moment a fur‐ther set of proposals from Vic Roads are awaited to see how much more of a fight we have ahead of us.
