Letter from the Minister

Dear Friends

Lent is already upon us, we have enjoyed our pan-cakes and now we are challenged to give something up, or take some-thing on.

There has been a lot of talk recently on the radio about ‘RandomActs of Kindness’; and if, like me, giving up chocolate is not an optionthat can be considered (!) may I suggest we try taking on the ideaof ‘Random Acts of Kindness’. It can be as simple as carryingsomeone’s bag, helping a person on or off the bus, offering to getshopping for a neighbour, clearing a path should the snow return…

The biggest challenge with random acts is that they should be unre-ported; so only you know if you achieved one random act each day.

We often carry out random acts of kindness in our daily lives withouteven thinking about it; this gives us the opportunity to acknowledgewhat we do and praise God that we are able to share His love in thisway. It reminds us that we really are God’s people in His world, andas much as we can sometimes feel unworthy to call ourselves Chris-tians, we can remind ourselves that we are good and kind people formost of the time.

Wherever we are, we have the opportunity to be kind; we have thechance to compliment others – especially those who serve us – andwe are able to show God’s love in our words and actions in the world.

So for the rest of Lent (and there is no need to stop there) let ustry to make one random act of kindness each day.

And I look forward to seeing you all at the Walk Through the NewTestament Saturday on the 16th March.

Sue

Bible Society update

Last summer the Bible Society focused on Cambodia where manypeople are not only poor, but illiterate.

Pastor Nom Saim’s mission is teaching his congregation to read -particularly the women and children.

They sit around an oldcassette player connectedup to a battery and start theirlesson. It is encouraging tolearn that the Church in thiscountry is growing at anextraordinary rate, andliteracy is vital for these newChristians to grow in theirnew-found faith.

I now have collecting boxesfrom the Bible Society for anyone who would like to contribute to thework of the Society. May I add that it costs only £8 to teach oneperson to read in Cambodia. It is a priceless gift to be literate.

How It All BeganIn ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Comdid take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot. And Dot Com was acomely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she had beencalled Amazon Dot Com.

She said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why doth thou travel far from town totown with thy goods when thou can trade without ever leaving thy tent?"Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of acamel load, but simply said, "How, Dear?"

And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between tosend messages saying what you have for sale and they will reply telling youwhich hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums anddelivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)."

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with thedrums. The drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold allthe goods he had at the top price, without ever moving from his tent.

To prevent neighbouring countries from overhearing what the drums weresaying, Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew. It wasknown as Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed alanguage to transmit ideas and pictures - Hebrew To The People (HTTP).

But this success did arouse envy. A man named Maccabia did secret himselfinside Abraham's drum and was accused of insider trading. And the youngmen did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to cameldung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Siderites, orNERDS for short.

And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafeningsound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to thedrum maker, one Brother William of Gates, who bought up every drumcompany in the land. And indeed did insist on making drums that would workonly with Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks.

Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over byothers."

And as Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or as it came to be known"eBay" he said, "We need a name that reflects what we are," and Dot replied,"Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators." "YAHOO", said Abraham. And because it was Dot's idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com. Abraham's

cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK)that he was, soon started using Dot's drums to locate things around thecountryside.

It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to Locating Everything(GOOGLE).

That is how it all began. And that's the truth.

Doctor FosterIn the verse the word puddle is rhymed with middle and some

researchers believe that it was originally piddle, which once meant astream. This gives weight to the theory that it relates to a story aboutEdward I, King of England in the 13th century, who, whilst visitingGloucester during a storm, rode his horse through a stream whichwas deeper than he thought and had to be pulled out.

The way things once wereWhat did those nursery rhymes mean?

We will be looking at this up to the October edition, 2013

Website of the Month Enough Food for Everyone - IFMajor new campaign to tackle hunger launched

The largest anti-poverty coalition since Make Poverty History in 2005,made up of Britain’s leading development charities and faith groups, has launched a major new campaign: Enough Food for Everyone IF.

In its first report out on 23 January the group, which currently numbers100 organisations and has the backing of philanthropist Bill Gates andArchbishop Desmond Tutu, warns that in a world where there isenough food for everyone, the scandal of children growing up hungryalso imposes a grave economic burden on the developing world.

The Revd Dr Michael Jagessar, moderator of the General Assembly ofthe United Reformed Church, said: “I’m delighted that the UnitedReformed Church is part of this vital campaign – it’s only together thatwe can make a loud enough noise to ensure we are heard by thosewith the power to change the damaging policies, habits and mindsets that we are locked into. The simple truth is the world producesenough food to ensure no one goes to bed hungry and we must acttogether to challenge a system that accepts this scandal to beinevitable. Join us and act now.”

We urge everyone to sign up now and get involved to make sure that2013 is the beginning of the end of hunger.

Groundbreaking campaign calls for donors

The United Reformed Church is proud to be part of a groundbreakingcampaign that calls on church members to help increase the numberof blood and organ donors in the UK. Founded as a two-yearpartnership between creative agency KORE and NHS Blood andTransplant (NHSBT), the initiative aims to profile the need for moreblood and organ donors and encourage donation as an alternativeway of personal giving.

The campaign has three main calls to action, all of which can beaccessed through the website:

ü Register online: Sign up to give blood or join the NHS Organ DonorRegister

ü Make a date to donate: Book a date to give blood at a centrenear you

ü Be an advocate: Lend your voice, raise awareness, and findways to involve others.

Continued on the next page ....

Page 19: 2013 mar

17

.... Continued from the previous page

Speaking of the URC’s decision to support this campaign, FrancisBrienen, the URC’s secretary for mission, said: “The flesh and bloodcampaign gives a fresh perspective to Christian giving. I particularlylike the simplicity of the idea – that it enables people to do somethingso simple and yet as profound and important as giving blood ordeciding to become an organ donor. I hope it encourages people inthe United Reformed Church to consider giving blood as part of theirChristian giving and in response to God’s boundless generosity to us.”

Sponsored by Give.net and in association with several denominations, organisations and festivals, the flesh and blood campaign marks thefirst time the NHS has worked alongside the church on a nationalinitiative of this kind.

Final ThoughtWhere your treasure is . . . .

'Treasure' was the theme of Iona Youth Festival 2012.

Here are the quotes on treasure from the sevengroups of young people

v Treasure can be found in memories and friendshipsas well as in what we have achieved.

v Treasuring material has no value and can be losttoo easily: find your treasure in creation.

v Happiness, love and thought are the treasures of alifetime.

v Discover who you treasure, as good friends andfamily are the true treasures of life.

v Many of life's treasures are bypassed - we muststop and enjoy them!

v We choose to treasure the joy we find in life, relationships and nature.

v You won't find your treasure at the end of thejourney, rather you will find it within yourself andthe journey itself.
