1 WORK EXPERIENCE Placement experiences, on- and off-campus work permits and co-op opportunities allow international students to integrate their academic studies with practical experience. Through these avenues, students gain marketable skills, network with future employers and earn a salary at the same time. Unique to Canada is the ability for international students to stay and work here for three years following graduation and then apply for citizenship.

2 IMMIGRATION POSSIBILITIES It’s no secret that Canada is the second largest country in the world totaling 9,984,670 km². The UK fits into Canada approximately 40 times! With that much land and only 34 million people, we’re a country that welcomes new immigrants. The Canadian Experience Class makes it easier for international students to apply for permanent resident status once they have graduated from a university and have one year of work experience.

3 COST OF LIVING & TUITION Canada is known for high quality, low-cost education. Our tuition rates for international students are lower than many other countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Cost of living is considerably less in Canada than the UK and Europe.

4 FRIENDLINESS & DIVERSITY Over the past 100 years, more than 13 million immigrants have come to Canada to start a new life. This makes Canada one of the world’s most ethnically diverse countries. Canada’s cultural mosaic is evident in the variety of restaurants and grocery stores, religious places of worship, and festivals throughout the year.

5 SAFETY Canada is a friendly, safe country with a high standard of living. Canada ranked #4 amongst the world’s safest countries in the 2012 Global Peace Index. Canada is a peaceful country that spends more on its health care system than on its armed forces. In 2011’s International Student Barometer (ISB) survey of students around the globe, Laurier scored 89% for student satisfaction in overall living and safety.

Why Laurier? With four locations and more than 16,000 students, Laurier could

be considered a large university in Canada. But you’d never know

it. The minute you step foot on one of our campuses, you’ll feel

like you’ve come home. Our close-knit community environment

will make you feel like you belong right away, so you can focus on

learning and growing as a person.

chooselaurier.ca/international | 3

We’ve been in the business of creating leaders in every industry for more than 100 years. We offer an extensive selection of programs at both the Waterloo and Brantford campuses that are very flexible. You may choose double-degree opportunities, major and minor combinations, options to enhance your degrees, and partnerships with other universities and colleges to combine your schooling and training.

Laurier students have an infectious spirit of volunteerism, leadership and extra-curricular involvement. With more than 145 student clubs across the two campuses, students have the opportunity to get involved, engage in healthy debate and take leadership roles within the university community. We recognize and support this passion for engagement in many ways, from our Student Leadership Centre to our community service-learning programs, which combine academic course work with volunteer placements.

Laurier ranked 1st among comprehensive universities in ontario for the percentage of students who were satisfied

with their choice of university. maclean’s cUsc 2011

aBOuT The WeaTher southwestern ontario experiences four distinct seasons:

Spring March to May temperatures from 10-20ºC (50-68ºF)

Summer June to August temperatures from 20-30ºC (68-86ºF)

Fall September to November temperatures from 7-20ºC (44-68ºF)

Winter December to February temperatures from -10 to 2ºC (14-35ºF)

Situated on the picturesque Grand River just an hour from Toronto, the city of Brantford has the charm of a small town with all the amenities of a much larger city. Laurier’s campus is located in the downtown core, within walking distance of great coffee shops, restaurants and patios. With large festivals, studio art tours, one-of-a-kind shops, various sports tournaments and world-class theatre, Brantford offers something for all tastes.

Laurier’s Waterloo campus is located in the thriving, culturally diverse community of Kitchener-Waterloo (K-W), just 100 kilometres west of Toronto. Home to many leaders in technology including Research in Motion, Desire2Learn and Google’s Canadian headquarters, K-W caters to a student population, which represents about a third of our 350,000 people. This city offers plenty of hiking trails, golf courses, skating rinks, soccer fields and even a ski hill. K-W is small enough to be safe and easy to get around, yet big enough to provide outstanding restaurants and shopping.

Jennifer Connor first learned about working on campus through Laurier Brantford’s weekly newsletter, and she jumped at the opportunity. “Part of the reason I decided to work on campus was to meet new people,” she says. “I’ve always worked while doing my schooling, and the best part of working on campus is getting to know all the wonderful staff, faculty and students.” Jennifer actually holds two jobs on campus: she works at the Stedman Community Bookstore and in the Recruitment Office as an Ambassador. “I love giving tours and seeing the students come to love the campus as much as I do,” she says.

Bonjour! Hola! Hey there! I am a third year student in the Business program from Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. During my first year at Laurier I lived in Clara Conrad Hall, an all-girls residence located right in the middle of campus. Since the day I moved in, I have never been disappointed. In my first year I was fortunate enough to get involved in residence life by becoming a community representative for my floor on House Council. I also volunteered and belonged to various campus clubs. Some of these include Free The Children and Laurier Marketing Association (LMA). I was also the class representative for the film studies course I was enrolled in.

During the past three years, Laurier has played a big role in my academic and personal growth. In my second year, I started to learn how to snowboard, as the ski/snowboard resort is only 15 minutes away from campus. Since then, snowboarding has become my regular winter activity. In addition, I have enjoyed picking up some Canadian lifestyle traits, such as eating pancakes with maple syrup, getting excited for hockey, eating poutine and drinking Tim Hortons coffee. Going to Laurier was the best choice I could have made. A friendly and supportive environment, high diversity, small size classes and a broad range of activities are some of the many reasons why I love this university and know you will too!

In my first year I didn’t have to leave the campus at all since everything is conveniently located. Laurier has two main food courts, two restaurants and several cafes all within our city block! There’s also a FIFA certified soccer field in the middle of campus and an Olympic-length pool in our Athletic Centre. With all these food and entertainment options, it’s no wonder I love this school!

support & services

Hello, or as we say in Russia, “Privet”! I came to Canada four years ago hoping to expand my knowledge of the English language in an ESL program, but as it turned out, I have decided to stay and attend university here. The decision to study at Wilfrid Laurier university wasn’t made by accident. While visiting the campus I was impressed by how enthusiastic, cheerful and caring the students were here. Laurier not only provides us with a high-quality education but also gives us an opportunity to grow personally and professionally.

gLOBaL engageMenT sTraTegy (ges)

The Global Engagement Strategy (GES) is a new initiative at Laurier to prepare all graduates to be citizens of the world. Not every student is able to travel abroad to have an international experience, so policies and programs are being developed to ensure that global engagement can be felt in some way by all students, faculty and staff.

The establishment of global engagement programming differentiates Laurier amongst other universities.

Laurier’s focus is to substantially increase international student enrolment in the next five years, continue and expand our academic preparatory programs, enhance our support services for international students and ensure that global engagement activities are also leveraged locally with community organizations that have a global outlook.

inTernaTiOnaL OrienTaTiOn Week (iOWeek)

All international students starting in September are encouraged to participate in the international student orientation program during their first week in Canada. They will attend workshops on academic success, health and safety, Canadian culture and other informative sessions. This is a great way to get acquainted with the Laurier campus, our academic culture, fellow international students and the staff and volunteers from Laurier International. visit the Laurier International website for more information.

Having completed my GCE A levels I decided to attend Wilfrid Laurier university and it has been one of the best choices I have ever made. I am now entering my 2nd year as an Honours Business student, pursuing the Chartered Accountant designation, and am proud to have received the President’s Centennial Award, which is an academic scholarship worth $5,000. Laurier has a tremendous co-opprogram which allows students to gain experience in their field, earn some extracash and apply what they have learnt in class. There is a really good feel and atmosphere to the university, as if it is one large community. You will sense that almost instantly, as you frequently walk past familiar faces. The small campus ensures you feel safe and secure and everything is conveniently located.
