Every year on the Sunday before Memorial Day, as she
left worship, she would shake my hand vigorously, just
as she had nearly every single Sunday and every special
worship service for the past nine months and say: “Well
pastor, I guess we will see you after Labor Day.” I said:
“You got it, don’t be late!” The summer would pass,
and on the weekend after Labor Day, right there in her
usual spot there she would be and remain for the next 9
months or so.
Actually that story is not about one person; it is about
several folks whom I have served as their pastor over the
last 15 years. They made their living in the tourism in-
dustry, and in the Upper Midwest that season is fairly
short, so as the old saying goes they had to “make hay
while the sun shines!” When I was a kid, much of life
was like this, from Labor Day to Memorial Day people
would “religiously” attend church, do the stuff of life.
But for many, things have changed, no longer are vaca-
tions restricted to Summer, no longer are special events
held away from Sundays so that people might gather to
worship.
If this is what your life looks like, I am not here to scold
you. That in many ways is just the way life goes. How-
ever, we in the church have often behaved like Ozzie,
Harriet, David and Ricky were still filling our pews
along with the Cleavers! (If you have no idea what I am
talking about you are pretty young… go Google it or ask
your elders!) We have operated like no one ever misses a
Sunday for sports tournament, no one ever travels to see
relatives on a non-Christmas or non-Easter occasion.
Summers in some ways are not that much different in
business than the school year.
This summer we are changing some things at St. John to
reflect this reality. We will continue with our Saturday
night worship but we will keep two worship services on
Sunday, 8:00 remains the same but the second service
will be at 9:45. Yes, the pace will be changed, but not
slowed down entirely. Stick around after worship on
Sunday or show up a little early at 9:00 and you will be
glad you did.
We will be doing and experiment with VBS this year by
spreading it out and doing it cross generationally be-
tween services on the second and fourth Sundays. No
matter your age you are invited to join us for any or all
of these activities!
We will have different musical groups formed just for
the summer that will provide music for our worship, and
there will be other events as well! First and third Sun-
days will have very brief programs during our coffee
time for you to engage in while you have your coffee or
juice between services. I am so excited by the work and
energy your staff here at St. John has put into these ide-
as!
Finally we will be doing some really interesting sermon
topics this summer. Right now we are doing five weeks
on the Lord’s Prayer, then we will be looking at the wise
teachings of Proverbs, then we will look at Five Spiritual
Urban legends!
I’d love to see you this Sunday!
In Christ,
Pastor David

Hello, from the office around the corner!
I’m not actually in the office around the
corner right now. I’m writing this to you
between sessions at a continuing educa-
tion experience at Luther Seminary in St.
Paul.
Possibly because I am at a continuing education experi-
ence right now, I’ve been pondering the ways that we
continue to grow and learn and develop in our faith and
in our lives.
With that in mind, I want to extend a big “Thank You”
to each and every one of you for the ways that you (as a
congregation) support both Pastor David and me in our
formal continuing education. I don’t want to speak for
him entirely, but I know that these experiences are in-
valuable to me, and I know that when I attend these
experiences, I am re-energized and re-vitalized for the
ministry that we share here at St. John.
As I’ve pondered how I continue to learn and grow, I
want us together to ponder the ways that we continue to
learn and grow in our faith, as members together of the
body of Christ in the world (specifically, here in Reeds-
burg at St. John).
When do you remember learning and growing the
most ,when you were younger than you are now? Was
it in a Sunday School class? Confirmation? Was it at a
Bible camp?
When have you experienced that learning and growth
recently in your life? Has it been during a traditional
educational experience? Has it been in Bible study?
Has it been in your devotional practice? Has it been in
worship?
Perhaps most importantly, who have been the people
who have nurtured you in your learning and growth?
Has it been a pastor? Has it been a speaker you heard?
Was it someone whom you were supposed to be teach-
ing?
I hope this little discourse has gotten you thinking
about the ways that you have learned and grown in your
faith lately. I am interested in learning about your learn-
ing. Pop your head in around the corner and let me
know! I look forward to hearing from you!

Church in Society News
We will again be doing
Lutheran World Relief Kits this
year. More info will be coming
but in general we
will be doing Layettes in June,
Personal Care Kits in July and
ending with School Kits in
August. We will again be
collecting specific items each
Sunday. (As always you may donate any items as it
works for you.)
Sewing Kits are still needed with some changes. They
are asking for thread and fabric only. Cotton/cotton
blends fabric, clean with no stains or holes. Amount of
fabric…60” wide 2 ½ yards…44” wide 3 yards…36”
wide 4 yards. Plus 2 spools of neutral colored general
purpose thread…250-300 yards each. Wrap the thread
in the fabric and tie it securely. This humble bundle
enables a person to develop skills that can lead to inde-
pendence.
Pillow Case Dresses continue to be needed. You may
drop them off in the basket in the narthex. Patterns
may also be found in the narthex. Thank you all for
that you do!
Congregation President
On May 4 and 5 I attended the 2013
Synod Assembly in Middleton, WI
along with Kathy Sorom, Patty
Sauey, Pastor David and Pastor Dom.
Much of the Assembly dealt with the
general business of the Synod. One of the first is-
sues we voted on was whether we should elect a
new bishop. It was decided to elect a new bishop at
a special meeting to be held Sept. 27 and 28, 2013.
We were also introduced to our new interim bishop,
Philip Hougen. We had two very interesting speak-
ers, presiding Bishop Mark Hanson of the ELCA
and Sara Miles, Founder of the Food Pantry & Di-
rector of Ministry at St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal
Church in San Francisco, CA. There were 500 plus
voting members in attendance. Thank you for the
chance to be a voting member.
Blessings,
Rich Sorom

Touched Twice Clinic
This year Touched Twice Clinic will be held on Au-
gust 3rd at the Webb Middle School. This is the 7th
year for the clinic which is offered free and is de-
signed to meet the spiritual, physical and basic needs
of those in our community. The clinic is staffed with
volunteer Doctors and Nurse Practitioners who per-
form school physicals, RN’s and LPNs who do the
initial interview and vital signs.
Beauticians give children haircuts and if we have
enough beauticians adults can also be included. If you
are a beautician that can help for all or part of the day,
or if you know of retired beauticians please let them
know about Touched Twice.
There is a huge need for companions. We serve 500 or
more people each year and each family is assigned a
companion who guides them through the entire clinic.
The companion is able to build a rapport with the fam-
ily and share their faith either by word or example.
There are meetings for instruction in being a compan-
ion before the event. Pastors from several churches are
present to meet their spiritual needs. If you have the
gift of speaking Spanish we can use your help as an
interpreter. We have a community of Spanish speaking
guests and it is so helpful to have interpreters for
them.
The clinic is from 10 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, Au-
gust 3. You can serve for the entire time or just part of
the time. If you want to volunteer for the medical clin-
ic or have questions please call me, Andrea at 768-
3554. If you would like
to volunteer for another
area of the clinic con-
tact Mike or Tristan
Rothwell at 524-2053.
Each child that comes
to TTC receives a back
pack containing the
necessary supplies for
the school year.
I hope that you will consider participating in this re-
warding experience as we fulfill our mission of reach-
ing out in love.

I had a conversation with a friend of mine the other day.
She shared with me that she was feeling tired and achy.
She was not eating the way she should. She told me she
needed to start taking care of herself. Then she went on
to tell me about the commitments she had scheduled for
the next couple of months and how she hoped to slow
down after that. We smiled at each other as we recalled
a conversation almost 6 month prior when she told me
the same thing. How does this relate to the soaring or
flapping? Read on I hope you will see the connection.
I always know when God wants me to focus on a topic
because He will give me several conversations with un-
related people on the same topic and I usually end up a
prime example! Later that day, my husband and I spoke
with a young man about his wife who had been very
busy with parenting, traveling, coaching, and teaching. It
seemed she was having difficulty sleeping and he specu-
lated that it was the result of her overextending herself,
but he was not planning on telling her what she should
do.
I proceeded to explain to him that women in our society
often feel pressured to do it all. They are expected to
multi-task or at least they think they are expected to do it
all. I explained to him how I had over the years come to
realize that I did not have to do it all and that I had ac-
cepted that I could say no (which is really true, but it
came on the heels of a crazy stretch of busy days). My
husband smiled at me politely. I was busted!
After justifying that it had just been a few hectic days
and that I was not overextending myself I had to take an
honest look. Before giving advice to someone else we
must first see that our words match our actions. In reali-
ty my words were falling flat because they were not
aligned with my actions. I had over the last weeks com-
plained to family and friends that I was feeling so tired
all of the time. One of my sisters pointed out that it
could be my fast paced schedule, but I quickly dismissed
her reason, after all I was only doing things I love to do.
How could that be harmful (I know the answer)?
It is so important for us to make time in our lives for re-
plenishing our body, mind and spirit. The bottom line is
it is my job to slow down, to stop flapping frantically
and to allow myself to soar peacefully appreciating life.
The world will not slow down in another month or two.
My friend knows that. The young woman knows that. I
know that.
The difference will be made when we go beyond know-
ing to doing. Life is rich. There is so much to love.
There are so many good things to do. Yet, if we do not
have the time to appreciate all that we are a part of in
this life perhaps we miss the point of any of it. We might
actually come to question whether any of it is worth do-
ing.
We must learn to take the time to soar above the world
and appreciate the wider view conserving our energy for
the purpose God has called us to. We must pause upon
his wings and trust our purpose will be fulfilled without
flapping our way frantically through the weeks trying to
get it all done.
I have noticed more birds this spring than I remember in
past years. Admiring the ease with which some of them
glide across the sky almost demonstrating for me how to
slow down and trust. Other birds rapidly flap their wings
representing the activities I sometimes find myself in,
consuming my energy, depleting my spirit.
I am thankful for this message, this reminder that I need
to slow down and re-evaluate God’s purpose for my life.
I hope that you, also, will take an honest look at your
life and determine whether you are soaring or flapping?
Questions to ponder:
1. Do my actions match my words?
2. Am I soaring or flapping my way through life
right now?
3. How can I get back on track for the purpose
God has for me?
May you have peace,

2013 Lutheran World Relief
Quilt Campaign
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Women and
Lutheran World Relief celebrate 25 years of working
together! Yes, twenty-five years with the average of
400,000 quilts per year. In
honor of the 25th year the
goal is 500,000 quilts. Each
quilting guild is asked to
increase their total to meet
this goal. At this time St.
John quilters are working to
their limit. Can we increase
our giving? Only with the
help of St John members.
How can you help?
1. Join us on the 1st Thursday and the 3rd Friday
from 9:00-11:30 AM.
2. Start an additional quilting group & manage it as
you see fit.
3. Cut squares for our quilters- 11 inches or 8 ½
inches.
4. Donate fabric/blankets/batting.
5. Assemble & tie quilts on your own.
LWR Quilts in 3 Easy Steps
1. Place fabric measuring 64”x84” right side down on
table, followed by a filler either 60”x80” or
64”x84”, follow with fabric/pieced top either
60”x80” or 64”x84”, right side up on top of filler.
2. Tie layers together (every 8”-10”) with crochet or
similar cord, or machine quilt together. Don’t use
yarn as it doesn’t last. Quilt should measure
60”x80” or 64”x84” approximately.
3. Fold the edges over approximately 2”, pin, and
machine stitch using zig-zag if possible.
Tips: Whole pieces of fabric may be used or pieced
pattern.
Types of fabric-cotton, cotton blends, twill, cordu-
roy, polyester knits, fleece and light-weight up-
holstery/drapery. NO fiberglass. Fabric in usea-
ble clean condition.
St John Quilters are in need of blankets/fabric/
batting for warm liners. Even in areas like Thailand,
there is a need for warm quilts. Please drop off your ex-
tra blankets so that we may not only warm hearts but
also bodies.

The Open Table Meal on Sunday, May 26 in memory of
my son, Ron, was an awesome event. We had many cakes
thanks to the generosity of all of you. We had many help-
ers in the kitchen, in serving the
meal, and in bussing and cleanup.
What a blessing! The people that
came to eat were blessed to have
such a great meal cooked and
served with love by so many
willing workers. After the meal was served, we had food
and cake left over that was taken to Christ Cupboard min-
istry. I thank you so very much for cakes you baked, the
meal you cooked, for serving the meal, for doing bussing
or cleanup, and for transporting and sharing the extras.
