Three U.S. Province Deacons Ordained to the Priesthood April 6

Three deacons of the U.S. Province were ordained to the priesthood on April 6, 2013, at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.

Provincial Superior, the Rev. Thomas J. O’Hara, C.S.C., presented the Rev. Mr. Brian C. Ching, C.S.C., the Rev. Mr. Mark F. DeMott, C.S.C., and the Rev. Mr. Jarrod M. Waugh, C.S.C., for ordination. The Most Rev. Daniel R. Jenky, C.S.C., Bishop of Peoria, Ill., conferred the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

Fr. Brian is the eldest of Debbie and Fred Ching’s two children. Born in New York City, he grew up in Flushing, N.Y., first encountering the Congregation of Holy Cross at Holy Cross High School, where he graduated in 2003. He continued his education with Holy Cross earning a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame in 2007 and a Master of Divinity degree from Notre Dame as well in 2012.

Fr. Brian entered Old College during his sophomore year at Notre Dame in 2004 and spent a semester studying at the American College, a seminary administered by the American bishops in Louvain, Belgium. During his time at the Holy Cross Novitiate (2007-2008) in Cascade, Colo., Fr. Brian served as a volunteer Chaplain with Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs. He has also served as a religious education teacher at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger, Ind. Fr. Brian spent a year (2010-2011) as a seminarian intern at St. John Vianney Parish in Goodyear, Ariz. During that year he worked with the RCIA program, prepared couples for marriage and Baptism and preached

regularly in a bilingual parish community. Fr. Brian professed First Vows on Aug. 2, 2008, and Final Vows on Aug. 25, 2012. As a Deacon, he served at St. Joseph Parish, South Bend, Ind.

“My hope for my future in Holy Cross is actually pretty simple: To serve the Lord and His people and to serve them well. What that service might look like, whether in a parish or on a college campus or in direct service to the poor, may well change, but so long as I get to serve the people of God, I will be happy as a Holy Cross priest,” Fr. Brian said.

During his diaconate year, Fr. Mark served as a Residence Hall Director and Campus Minister at the University of Portland (Ore.).

Most Rev. Daniel Jenky, C.S.C., Bishop of Peoria, Ill., confers the Sacrament of Holy Orders on Deacon Brian Ching, C.S.C.

The eldest of five children of Dr. and Mrs. John and Jodi DeMott, Fr. Mark was born in Kansas City, Mo., and grew up in Holland, Mich. where he graduated from Holland High School in 1998. He attended Notre Dame, earning a bachelor’s degree in 2002 and the Master of Divinity degree in 2007.

Since entering formation with Holy Cross, Fr. Mark has served at a number of Holy Cross apostolates. His first assignment was as Director of Christian Formation at Saint Joseph Parish, South Bend (2007-2008). He went on to serve at Parroquia Nuestra Madre Santísima de la Luz in Guadalupe, Nuevo León, México (summer 2008); Penrose Main Hospital and Sacred Heart Parish in Colorado Springs (during his Novitiate year in 2008-2009); Holy Cross and Saint Stanislaus Parish, South Bend (2009-2010), where he served as Director of Liturgy and Music; Saint Joseph’s High School, South Bend (2010-2011); and Holy Cross Lake View Senior Secondary School, Jinja, Uganda, where he was Choir Director and

also taught chemistry and biology (2011-2012). Fr. Mark professed his First Vows on Aug. 1, 2009, and Final Vows on Aug. 25, 2012.

“I hope that life in Holy Cross will place me in real relationship with many kinds of people. I hope that it will challenge me to embrace the Gospel. I hope that it will draw me more closely into God’s presence. And I hope that sharing my journey with others will offer them the same,” said Fr. Mark.

Fr. Jarrod grew up in rural Southeast Kansas, graduating from Labette County High School in Altamont in 2004.

The eldest of three children of Jerry and Carolyn Waugh, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2008 and a Master of Divinity in 2012. He lived in Keough Hall for two years and was active in Campus Ministry and the campus council of the Knights of Columbus before entering Old College as a junior in 2006. Fr. Jarrod professed First Vows on Aug. 1, 2009, and Final Vows on Aug. 25, 2012.

During his years as a Holy Cross seminarian, Fr. Jarrod served as an adult Bible study Catechist at Holy Cross Parish in South Bend (2007-2008); worked with the homeless at St. André Bessette Catholic Church, Portland (summer 2008); served as Chaplain at Penrose Hospital during his Novitiate year (2008-2009); Holy Redeemer Parish and School, Portland (January, 2009); at Holy Cross Family Ministries, North Easton, Mass. (summer 2011); and served as Assistant Director of Old College at Notre Dame (2011-2012). Over the past year, Fr. Jarrod has been at Christ the King Parish, South Bend, leading the RCIA team, serving as Chaplain to

third- through fifth-graders at the school, working on baptismal and marriage preparation programs, chairing the Vocations Promotion Committee and assisting with visits to the sick and homebound.

“I get really excited when I think about what my future might hold in parish work or someday in another area of ministry. One of the reasons I joined Holy Cross is because of the diversity of personalities and talents of the Holy Cross Religious that I have met over the years. We are definitely not all alike or cookie-cutter copies. I look forward to working with this talented and varied brotherhood in so many of the places where we minister,” Fr. Jarrod said.

A fire took place recently at St. Joseph Hill Secondary School, Kyambogo, Uganda, in a room housing solar equipment and batteries that power the school.

In 2011, the school installed 10 solar panels, batteries, inverter and five switchboards to wire all classrooms, offices, library, laboratories, two dorms and the staff quarters.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. An effort is being made to raise funds to replace the damaged equipment.

School Founder Honored at Annual FundraiserFr. Joe Corpora, C.S.C., was recognized during the “Reach for the Stars” benefit dinner and auction at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz., on Feb. 1, 2013. Joe started St. John Vianney Catholic School at the parish in Goodyear, Ariz., in 1992. When the school was started, initial support was hesitant. At the time, the parish was among the poorest parishes in the Phoenix Diocese and the school served largely Hispanic students.

Joe began the tradition of a yearly fundraiser for the school. Lou Holtz spoke at the first one. The funds are used for an endowment which provides financial assistance for students at the school. Over the years, the endowment has awarded $1.2 million in scholarships and 1,200 students have attended the school.

St. Joe Parish Kicks Off Public Capital CampaignSaint Joseph Church and School, South Bend, Ind., recently launched a $4 million campaign to refurbish the church, expand the school and construct a new parish life center.

Saint Joseph was founded by Fr. Edward Sorin, C.S.C., in 1853 and is South Bend’s oldest Catholic worship community.

The quiet phase of the “Living Our Faith, Building Our Future Campaign” began in September 2012 and has raised more than $3.3 million toward the $4 million goal.

The campaign aims to fund four priorities that support the mission of the parish:

• Modest renovation of the church interior; • An addition to the grade school that includes

spacious athletic facilities and additional classroom space for music, pre-kindergarten and enhanced learning programs;

• Construction of a new parish life center on Colfax

Fr. Denning 10th President at Stonehill College

Fr. John Denning, C.S.C., has been named the 10th President of Stonehill College.

He will take over for Fr. Mark Cregan, C.S.C., who announced in September that he would step down on June 30. Fr. Cregan, a 1978 graduate of Stonehill, was the second longest-serving president at

the College (Easton, Mass.).Fr. Denning, 53, is Vice President for Student

Affairs at Stonehill, a position he has held since 2007. “I am honored and humbled at the opportunity to lead Stonehill. I believe in the wonderful story of this College,” he said. “Its mission provides each student with a learning experience that transcends the classroom for the good of the broader community and fosters a hunger to build a more just and compassionate world.”

His inauguration will take place later in the year and planning is already underway.

Fr. Tom O’Hara, C.S.C., said, “Stonehill is an important ministry of Holy Cross in the United States and education is at the heart of our mission. With understated confidence, Fr. John has devoted his life to serving Catholic education. In particular, he appreciates the history and the importance of collaboration between Holy Cross priests and brothers

and our lay partners and the power of that partnership as we move forward as a community. We welcome Fr. John’s election as president and have faith the Holy Spirit will continue to bless Fr. John and Stonehill.”

Fr. Denning cited his passion to build upon the College’s strong academic reputation, deepening its commitment to diversity and enhancing Stonehill’s Catholic character.

Fr. Denning served as Vice President for Mission at the College from 2001 to 2007 and also served as Director of Campus Ministry from 2000 to 2003. He is a doctoral candidate in higher education administration at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. Fr. Denning, who celebrated his 25th anniversary of Ordination in 2012, is also a Trustee of King’s College (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.). Fr. Denning previously served as Director of Vocations for the former Eastern Province of Priests and Brothers, Campus Minister and Teacher at Coyle-Cassidy High School in Taunton, Mass., and as Director of Campus Ministry at Bridgewater State College, where he also served as Director of the Catholic Center.

Also active in local affairs, Fr. Denning serves on the Boards of My Brother’s Keeper in Easton and Father Bill’s & MainSpring Coalition for the Homeless in Brockton.

Fr. Denning was born on Oct. 2, 1959, in East Providence, R.I. He made his Final vows in 1986 and was ordained in 1987. He received a bachelor’s degree from Tulane University in 1981 and his M.Div. from the University of Toronto in 1986.

Fr. James Fenstermaker, C.S.C., and parishioners at Holy Cross Parish, South Easton, Mass., dedicated a new Respect Life Garden on May 19, 2013, near the church. The garden includes a 4-foot-tall statue of the Holy Family. A quote from Cardinal Joseph Bernardin is inscribed on the base. The Cardinal is credited with popularizing the concept of a consistent ethic of life. There are two benches at the site as well for community prayer and reflection.

ObituariesRev. John F. Kurtzke Jr., C.S.C. March 28, 1951 - Feb. 28, 2013

Rev. John Francis Kurtzke Jr., C.S.C., 61, died at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Ind., on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013.

He was born on March 28, 1951, in Queens, N.Y., the eldest of eight children of Dr. John F. and Margaret M. (Nevin) Kurtzke. Fr. Kurtzke

graduated from Gonzaga High School, Washington, D.C., in 1969.

Fr. Kurtzke graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1973; a Master’s of Philosophy and a Candidate in Philosophy from UCLA in 1975 and 1977, respectively, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from UCLA in 1978. He was received into the Congregation of Holy Cross on Aug. 18, 1979.

Fr. Kurtzke made his First Profession of Vows on Aug. 9, 1980. He earned his M.Div. in Theology from Notre Dame in 1984 and served as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Mathematics. Fr. Kurtzke made his Final Profession on Sept. 1, 1984, and was ordained on April 13, 1985.

Fr. Kurtzke was Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Portland from 1985 to 2004 and was also the Chairman of the Mathematics Department for six years. During his tenure as Department Chair, he spearheaded changes in the required mathematics class for liberal arts majors, making it a more applicable statistics course that served students in their majors.  Fr. Kurtzke was a regular presider of liturgy, along with other Holy Cross Priests in Portland, who served at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in Stevenson, Wash.

He was on sabbatical from 1993-1994 and served as a Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Notre Dame, after which he returned to Portland. After treatment for a cerebral hemorrhage at Mayo Clinic in November of 2004, he moved to Holy Cross House and worked as a clerk in the Notre Dame Library. Fr. Kurtzke was assigned to Fatima House in 2006 and moved back to Holy Cross House in 2010.

The Funeral Homily of Rev. John F. Kurtzke, C.S.C.by Rev. David Tyson, C.S.C.

We gather for these days of wake and funeral, John’s mother and father, his siblings and extended family, his brothers in Holy Cross, colleagues and friends, to mourn the passing of a son, a brother, a brother in Holy Cross, a priest, a colleague and friend. And in the midst of our grief, we also gather to celebrate in this Eucharist John’s faith in the Cross and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ as the gift that assures his life with Christ in eternity. We share John’s faith and that vision of the future in Christ, and so we do celebrate — though are hearts are heavy.

John was received in Holy Cross in 1979, and for almost 34 years as a religious, and 28 as a Holy Cross priest, we in Holy Cross have counted him among our “band of men with hope to bring.”

He willingly shared his life with us in Community. He served with in our apostolate of higher education, especially at the University of Portland. He counted his ministry in higher education not to be his but that of Christ, and a ministry that was held in common by all of us in the Community.

John served at the University of Portland for 19 years and I had the privilege of serving in that apostolate with him for 13 of those years. He was a mathematician who had, as do most mathematicians, a keen sense of logic which he brought to bear in the way he thought and spoke about most topics. He served as a professor at the introductory level and in the upper division of the department. He also served as Department Chair for six years, a task that he did not always relish.

John had high expectations of himself and others, and not a very deep well of patience. He knew that about himself, nonetheless, suffered a bit with students because of it. He loved his students, yet could become a bear if he perceived any slacking off especially by advanced students who were majors, his majors. He would, from time to time, tell me of his frustration with the students and would agree that he had to work on patience. I knew of few faculty members that possessed the self knowledge that John did; who were as open to critique as he was and resolved to improve like he was. He asked me once if his impatience was obvious. I responded that it was only obvious to those who are also very impatient — and that was why I was one who noticed. While he thought that

was humorous, I assured him it was true. John loved everything about the intellectual life. He loved being part of the academy, and, yet, struggled at times with its imperfections and blemishes.

All of this being said, what I will always remember John Kurtzke for, having served as his President, Provincial and as his Holy Cross brother, is that, very simply put, John Kurtzke was just a dedicated, committed religious and a compassionate, effective priest. He saw our work in higher education as a community venture, not a personal career path. It was important that it was us working together for the Gospel through the mission of Holy Cross. He labored quietly and unobtrusively to do his part to make UP better. And sometimes, he would get impatient with us and with the president! However, no matter the ups and downs of our life, John was all about the Community. He lived this foundational value of Holy Cross with great enthusiasm. John was a distinctive presence among us. He shared his good times and bad. He shared his faith with us as brother and as priest, preached well to us who were his fellow sojourners in this world. It was all Kurtzke-esque in style, but that is what made it so poignant. Quiet by nature and very much at home in Holy Cross — that was John Kurtzke.

For almost 10 years, John carried the Cross of Christ as medical problems began to, over time, affect his work and life in profound, irreversible ways. John bore the Cross of Christ, as we are all commanded to do, but his was exceedingly heavy. John’s Cross, until recent months, was very much about loss in his life: the loss of cognitive skills, the loss of teaching, the loss of significant speech capability, the loss of independence, the loss of some freedom of choice. Add to all this that John Kurtzke impatience and the Cross at times seemed very hard for him to bear.

Fr. John VandenBossche, C.S.C., began working in art when he returned from Bengal. He started with woodcuts and then took courses in drawing at Portland. While he was in Phoenix (around 1991) he began painting watercolors. He worked on water colors during his 10 years at St. Francis in Mountainview, Calif. He has done between 300 and 400 paintings.

But through it all, John showed himself to be that same fine religious. He was still a teacher to all who came in contact with him. This time, however, the curriculum was a great deal more difficult. In these last few months, John taught us that his own suffering and experience of the Cross, joined to that of his Savior, gave him courage, a courage that was deeply rooted in hope, a hope that was our only hope.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells Martha and reminds us that He is the Resurrection and the Life. Through the Paschal Mystery of Christ, the Cross was transformed from an instrument of suffering and death into an anchor of hope. It transforms all things, including death itself. John bore the Cross with incredible courage because of his HOPE and the sure knowledge of the Cross transforming death to life. As Jesus assures us in today’s Gospel, “whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live.” For John, that is a fact; for us, it is our consolation.

In a culture and society that defines us by what we do and how much we achieve, those who suffer the kind of loss that John did in the last decade of his life can sometimes live on the margins. Our reading from the Book of Wisdom today enlightens us to the error of these kinds of sole measurements of one’s worth. Rather Wisdom tells us that: “The just man, though he die early, shall be at rest. For the age that is honorable comes NOT with the passing of time, nor can it be measured in terms of years. Rather, understanding is the hoary crown for men, And an unsullied life, the attainment of old age.”

Perhaps it is this kind of measure that best defines John’s life: one not benchmarked by the secular world’s values of longevity and career accomplishments, but rather by the values that John pledged and promised in his Baptismal vows, in his profession of vows in Holy Cross and the promises at his Ordination; values that are measured by a life of fidelity to that which he promised when he answered God’s call.

Constitution VIII of the Holy Cross Constitutions tell us that “Christ the Lord has risen to die no more. He has taken us into the mystery and grace of this life that springs from death. ... There is no failure the Lord’s love cannot reverse,

no humiliation he cannot exchange for blessing, no anger he cannot dissolve, no routine he cannot transfigure. ... It remains only for us to find how even the cross can be borne as gift.”

On February 28th, John Kurtzke found out how the Cross can, indeed, be borne as a gift. For, he, himself, has been touched by the grace of the Cross of Christ which is his anchor of hope. John now lives in peace because he bore the Cross.

In 1979, Holy Cross received John among us as our brother. We have been blessed by his presence. Today, we pray that he may rest in peace among his brothers whom he joins in eternal life and in whose footsteps we walk. May our Patroness, Our Lady of Sorrows, be a consolation to John’s parents, his siblings and all who will miss John. AMEN.

He taught at Saint George’s College in Santiago, Chile, from 1949 to 1952. From there, he went to San José Missions in Austin, Texas, to work for a year. He was pastor at Centro Pastoral San Roque Parish in Santiago and a teacher at Saint George’s College and other schools in Santiago. In 1968, Fr. Delaney became a Chilean citizen.

The majority of Fr. Delaney’s service in Holy Cross was spent in Chile — approximately 55 years of serving the poor and the sick. Since 1974, he ran drug and alcohol counseling services for addicts and their families at the Pastoral Center of San Roque Parish. For more than 20 years he has also maintained a ministry at Saint George’s College.
