Safety GuidelinesFollow these guidelines to enhance your safety:● Perform all routine and regular inspections

specified in this manual.● Stop the engine and keep sparks and flame

away before filling the fuel tank.● Do not run the engine in enclosed or partly

enclosed areas. Carbon monoxide in exhaustgases is toxic and can kill you.

It’s a proven fact: helmets and protectiveapparel significantly reduce the number andseverity of head and other injuries. So alwayswear an approved motorcycle helmet andprotective apparel. 2 P. 10

Make sure that you are physically fit, mentallyfocused and free of alcohol and drugs. Check

that you and your passenger are both wearingan approved motorcycle helmet and protectiveapparel. Instruct your passenger on holdingonto the grab rails or your waist, leaning withyou in turns, and keeping their feet on thefootpegs, even when the motorcycle is stopped.

Even if you have ridden other motorcycles, practice riding in a safe area to become familiarwith how this motorcycle works and handles, and to become accustomed to the motorcycle’ssize and weight.

Always pay attention to other vehicles aroundyou, and do not assume that other drivers seeyou. Be prepared to stop quickly or perform anevasive maneuver.

Make yourself more visible, especially at night,by wearing bright reflective clothing,

positioning yourself so other drivers can seeyou, signaling before turning or changing lanes, and using your horn when necessary.

Never ride beyond your personal abilities or

faster than conditions warrant. Fatigue andinattention can impair your ability to use good

judgement and ride safely.

Alcohol and riding don’t mix. Even one

alcoholic drink can reduce your ability torespond to changing conditions, and yourreaction time gets worse with every additionaldrink. Don’t drink and ride, and don’t let yourfriends drink and ride either.

It’s important to keep your motorcycle properlymaintained and in safe riding condition.

Inspect your motorcycle before every ride andperform all recommended maintenance. Neverexceed load limits ( 2 P. 15 ), and do not modifyyour motorcycle or install accessories thatwould make your motorcycle unsafe ( 2 P. 14 ).

Personal safety is your first priority. If you oranyone else has been injured, take time toassess the severity of the injuries and whether itis safe to continue riding. Call for emergencyassistance if needed. Also follow applicablelaws and regulations if another person or

vehicle is involved in the crash.

If you decide to continue riding, first evaluatethe condition of your motorcycle. If the engineis still running, turn it off. Inspect for fluid leaks,

Riding Precautions

During the first 500 km (300 miles) of running, follow these guidelines to ensure yourmotorcycle’s future reliability and performance.● Avoid full-throttle starts and rapid

acceleration.● Avoid hard braking.● Ride conservatively.

Observe the following guidelines:● Avoid excessively hard braking and sudden

shifting to a lower gear.u Sudden braking can reduce the

motorcycle’s stability.u Where possible, reduce speed before

turning; otherwise you risk wheel slippage.● Exercise caution on low traction surfaces.

u The wheels lock more easily on such

surfaces, and braking distances are longer.● Avoid continuous braking.

u Repeated braking can overheat the brakes, reducing their effectiveness.

❙Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)

This model is equipped with an Anti-lock BrakeSystem (ABS) designed to help prevent thebrakes from locking up during hard braking.● ABS does not reduce braking distance. In

certain circumstances, ABS may result in alonger stopping distance.

● ABS does not function at speeds below 10km/h (6 mph).

● The brake lever and pedal may recoil slightlywhen applying the brakes. This is normal.

● Always use the recommended tyres to ensurecorrect ABS operation.

❙Engine BrakingEngine braking helps slow your motorcycledown when you release the throttle. For furtherslowing action, downshift to a lower gear. Useengine braking with intermittent use of thebrakes to reduce speed when descending long, steep slopes.

❙Wet or Rainy ConditionsRoad surfaces are slippery when wet, and wetbrakes further reduce braking efficiency.Exercise extra caution when braking in wetconditions. If the brakes get wet, apply the brakes whileriding at low speed to help them dry.

● Do not touch the engine, muffler, brakes andother high-temperature parts until they cool

down.● To reduce the likelihood of theft, always lock

the handlebars and remove the key whenleaving the motorcycle unattended.Use of an anti-theft device is alsorecommended.

❙Parking with the Side Stand1. Stop the engine.2. Push the side stand down.

3. Slowly lean the motorcycle to the left until itsweight rests on the side stand.

4. Turn the handlebars fully to the left.u Turning the handlebars to the right

reduces stability and may cause themotorcycle to fall.

5. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK positionand remove the key. 2 P. 33

Follow these guidelines to protect the engineand catalytic converter:● Use only unleaded petrol.● Use recommended octane number. Using

lower octane petrol will result in decreasedengine performance.

❙Cleaning and LubricatingAfter inspecting the slack, clean the chain andsprockets while rotating the rear wheel. Use drycloth with chain cleaner designed specifically

for O-ring chains, or neutral detergent. Use asoft brush if the chain is dirty. After cleaning, wipe dry and lubricate with therecommended lubricant. If not available, useSAE 80 or 90 gear oil.

Do not use a steam cleaner, a high pressurecleaner, a wire brush, volatile solvent such aspetrol and benzene, abrasive cleaner, chaincleaner or lubricant NOT designed specifically

for O-ring chains as these can damage therubber O-ring seals.Avoid getting lubricant on the brakes or tyres.Avoid applying excess chain lubricant to preventspray onto your clothes and the motorcycle.

Pro Honda HP coolant is a pre-mixed solution ofantifreeze and distilled water.

A concentration of antifreeze below 40% willnot provide proper corrosion and coldtemperature protection.

Fuels Containing AlcoholSome conventional fuels blended with alcoholare available in some locales to help reduce

emissions to meet clean air standards. If youplan to use blended fuel, check that it isunleaded and meets the minimum octanerating requirement.

The following fuel blends can be used in yourmotorcycle:●

Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) 10% by volume (max).● Petrol containing ethanol may be marketedunder the name Gasohol.

● Methanol (methyl alcohol) 5% by volume(max) that contain cosolvents and corrosioninhibitors to protect the fuel system. Neveruse a blend containing more than 5%.

The use of petrol containing more than 10%ethanol (or more than 5% methanol) may:● Damage the painting of the fuel tank.● Damage the rubber tubes of the fuel line.●

Cause corrosion of the fuel tank.● Cause poor drivability.

If you notice any undesirable operatingsymptoms or performance problems, try adifferent brand of petrol.

NOTICEUse of blended fuels containing higher than approvedpercentages can damage metal, rubber, plastic parts ofyour fuel system.

Catalytic ConverterThis motorcycle is equipped with a three-waycatalytic converter. The catalytic converter

contain precious metals that serve as catalysts inhigh temperature chemical reactions thatconvert hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide(CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in theexhaust gasses into safe compounds.

A defective catalytic converter contributes to air

pollution and can impair your engine’sperformance. A replacement unit must be anoriginal Honda part or equivalent.

Follow these guidelines to protect yourmotorcycle’s catalytic converter.● Always use unleaded petrol. Leaded petrol

will damage the catalytic converter.●

Keep the engine in good running condition.● Have your motorcycle serviced if your engineis misfiring, backfiring, stalling, or otherwisenot running properly, stop riding and turn offthe engine.

Caring for Your MotorcycleFrequent cleaning and polishing is important toensure the long life of your Honda. A clean

motorcycle makes it easier to spot potentialproblems. In particular, seawater and salts used to preventice on roads promote the formation ofcorrosion. Always wash your motorcyclethoroughly after riding on coastal or treatedroads.

Allow the engine, muffler, brakes, and otherhigh-temperature parts to cool before washing.1. Rinse your motorcycle thoroughly using a

garden hose to remove loose dirt.2. If necessary, use a sponge or a soft towel

with mild cleaner to remove road grime.u Clean the windscreen, headlight lens,

panels, and other plastic components withextra care to avoid scratching them. Avoid

directing water into the air cleaner, muffler, and electrical parts.

3. Thoroughly rinse your motorcycle with plentyof clean water and dry with a soft, clean

cloth.4. After the motorcycle dries, lubricate anymoving parts.u Make sure that no lubricant spills onto the

brakes or tyres. Brake discs or padscontaminated with oil suffer greatlyreduced braking effectiveness and canlead to a crash.

5. Lubricate the drive chain immediately afterwashing and drying the motorcycle.

6. Apply a coat of wax to prevent corrosion.u Avoid products that contain harsh

detergents or chemical solvents. These candamage the metal, paint, and plastic onyour motorcycle.Keep the wax clear of the tyres and brakes.

u If your motorcycle has any matte paintedparts, do not apply a coat of wax to thematte painted surface.
