BIO
Sally McCubbin is a Toronto artist, who is active within a global community of art and design. She incorporates innovative and creative thinking into object design, art making, public art, community building, teaching and learning. Sally is an instructor at Sheridan College and has taught workshops internationally including at Pilchuck Glass School (Seattle WA). She recently co-founded a multi-disciplin-ary studio of 12 artists in Toronto, called Studio Huddle and in 2005 was a founding member of the VEST collective. In recognition of her commitment to excellence, Sally has received a variety of grants and awards, most recently in 2011 she was given the Royal Bank of Canada Award for Glass. Sally is passionate about thoughtful design and created a company entitled Timid Glass Toronto with partner Aaron Oussoren that reflects this enthusiasm as well as their shared interest in efficientcy and conservationism.
STATEMENT
I am interested in what’s happening today and my creative narrative is informed by current culture. I question the inconsistencies between my own thinking and that of the general social perspective in North America. It is because of this disconnect, that I find strength in creativity and innovation. I believe positive change is in the hands of the inspired and the radical.
I make glass objects that are desirable to look at, but they are
motivated by ideas that aren’t as attractive.
