The Goumond House bedroom is the setting for this couple who are getting dressed for a New Year’s celebration. Whether at a hotel or at home, many lavish parties took place in Las Vegas in the 1950s. Guests dressed in their best

clothing and topped it off with a cardboard party hat.

Although pioneered in the 1920s, televisions were not affordable

for the average American until the 1950s. This General

Electric television set dates from about

1950, when a typical TV set cost around

$200. That would be equivalent to about

$1,900 today.

Standing in the living room of the Babcock Wilcox house, the construction of Hoover Dam is far from her thoughts as a 1930s Boulder City housewife reads her Valentine’s Day cards and samples her chocolates. originally, Valentine’s Day

greetings were handwritten notes. The first mass-produced cards in the United States appeared around 1840. By 1900, commercial Valentine cards were inexpensive to buy and send and have remained popular, along with chocolates.

The top for this Irish Chain quilt was

made in Boulder City, Nevada in the 1930s. It was quilted in the 1990s as a Desert

Quilters project. Many of the fabric pieces are from flour sacks. Quilters often make use of scrap fabric

to create theirworks of art.

The odd Shop Antique Store, located in the Giles Barcus House, would have been a good place to look for vintage St. Patrick’s Day postcards. As today, in the 1970s, practically everyone, whether of Irish heritage or not, celebrated

St. Patrick’s Day by wearing green clothing, hats, shamrock jewelry and attending a party or parade.

These two hand-painted ceramic pieces are Giles family heirlooms. In the 1950s, Edith

Giles Barcus moved her parent’s 1920s

cottage from Goldfield, Nevada,to Las Vegas and opened it as an

antique store named the Odd Shop.

It looks like this 1950s mother and daughter have had a successful Easter egg hunt that took place in the Museum’s Guild Grove. Eggs symbolize new life and the tradition of eggs being colored or decorated for Easter dates back hundreds of

years. In the United States, egg hunts and egg rolls have been a favorite activity during Easter for generations.

for purchase through the Clark County

Museum Guild and are placed along

the walkways in the Guild Grove on Heritage Street.

W hile Memorial Day is a time to honor men and women of the United States Armed Forces who died while serving this country, it also signals the start of summer activities. Memorial Day Bar-B-Ques are a popular favorite. Many

Southern Nevadans lived in trailers like this Spartanette, especially in the years following the Second World War through the 1960s. The museum’s trailer represents the 1960s and this “hip” couple is going to enjoy their burgers.

The Spartan Aircraft Company

manufactured high quality travel trailers

after World War II. The museum’s 1948 Spartanette, was originally located

at the Golden Rule Trailer Park in Pittman,

Nevada. It features wood paneling, twin beds, a kitchen, and

sofa-bed.

June is a popular month for weddings and Clark County is a favorite place. From 1966 until 2004, the Candlelight Wedding Chapel, originally located on the Las Vegas “Strip”, was the site for thousands of couples to say, “I do.”

White wedding dresses came into vogue during the

late 1800s and remain the industry standard

today. This dress served double duty as

it was first wornin 1915 and again

in the 1940s.

Standing beneath a 1950s air raid siren, the Clark County Museum’s professional staff, headed by Mark Hall-Patton, Museum Administrator, with Dawna Jolliff, Curator of Exhibits, and Malcolm Vuksich, Museum Specialist, invites you

to “step into the past.”

The Boulder City Depot is getting a festive trim for the Fourth of July. Built in 1931, this depot remained in Boulder City until 1974. It was the first historic building to be moved to the Clark County Museum site.

Lanterns played an important part in the early days of

railroading. In a loud railroad yard, before radios, there was a

need to communicate messages. By swinging

a lantern in various ways, railroad workers could send a signal,

such as stop, or apply brakes. This early 1900s

Adlake clear globe lantern was used by

Brakemen for general signals.

To help cool off on a hot August day, southern Nevada children in the 1950s and 1960s would turn on a sprinkler and have fun running through the water. Children of today still find this activity a fun way to beat the heat in the

Goumond house yard.

The word picnic is most likely derived

from the French word piquenique. In the

late 1700s, this word referred to a meal in which everyone

attending presented food and it usually took place indoors. During the 1800s, in England and the United States, the word picnic began being associated with a basket meal served

outdoors.

The editor is proofing the Labor Day edition of the newspaper, 1930. Newspapers played an important role in Clark County’s history. The printing press and folder on exhibit in the Print Shop were used during the 1950s and 1960s to

print the Henderson Home News.

This Rouse American slug cutter was used in conjunction with

an Intertype machine. Metal lines of type

or slugs, created by the Intertype, could be cut to the correct length by using this

device.

The Ghost Town is empty and silent. only a few creepy old residents are around to celebrate on october 31st. Not only is that date celebrated as Halloween, but it is also Nevada Admission day. The Silver State became official on

october 31, 1864.

outdoor toilets or outhouses were prime targets for Halloween

pranksters well into the mid 1900s. Children and teens

would tip them over. Hopefully, no one was inside at the time. The museum’s Ghost Town outhouse came from Searchlight, Nevada.

The Beckley family had a cabinet radio and an Estey baby

grand piano to provide some

musical relaxation.

It looks like Santa Claus has brought a special present for the children to share. World War II saw the creation of Henderson as housing for the Basic Magnesium Plant. The Townsite houses built for the workers were supposed to be

temporary, but many remain solid residences to this day.

Children are always excited when they receive a tricycle

or bicycle as a present. This 1940s

tricycle is a chain-drive model. It was completely restored as part

of the “American Restoration”

television show.
