Cead Mile Failte to You Allto the Eighth Annual Cape Cod Saint Patrick’s Parade
Once again it’s that time of the year. Time for the 8th Annual Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade. We want to start by thanking everyone who bore the elements last year to come out and support the parade. The weather in New England can be so unpre-dictable. Last year’s snow caught us a little of guard but in typical New England fashion it didn’t stop the parade. Our motto is “the parade WILL go on.”
It is with great pleasure and admiration that we announce the Grand Marshal for the 8th Annual Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade, Derek Sanderson. Derek was a key member of the two-time Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins in the early 1970s. Also, known as “Turk” he was the NHL’s rookie of the year in 1968. Derek is currently Managing Director of The Sports Group with Baystate Wealth Management in Boston. His team works with athletes and high net worth individuals. He is involved with a variety of charitable organizations and makes a number of guest appearances at charitable events to help raise awareness and funding for their cause. His autobiography, ‘Crossing the Line: The Outrageous Story of a Hockey Original,’ written with Kevin Shea, was released in October 2012 by Triumph in the United States and by HarperCollins Canada. Derek’s life story, his success on the ice, struggles with addiction and overall triumphs are a testament to his courage. It is with great pride that we have Derek lead this year’s Parade. (Bio information courtesy of Wikipedia and Kevin Shea).
In addition to welcoming Derek to our parade we would like to welcome back one of our colleen finalists from last year’s court, Miss Eliza Bowes. Eliza was named as the 2013 Cape Cod Rose at the Cape Cod IrishVillage in January. Eliza will now go to Boston and enter into the 2013 Boston New England Rose Selection which will be held on Saturday April 27, 2013. We wish Eliza the best of luck and would love to see her make it all the way to the International Rose of Tralee, Ireland in August.
We would also like to announce this years recipient of The Chairman’s Award Mr. Mike Regan. Mike joined the parade committee a few years ago and has continued to be a constant force behind the scenes. Mike’s hard work and dedication to the parade have been instrumental to the Parade’s success. Mike has proven to be that person that we turn to for whatever is needed. Mike is also the current President of the Sons Of Erin where he and his beautiful wife Ellen can be seen working almost daily to help provide a place in which we can all enjoy our Irish Heritage. We would like to take this time to thank Mike for all that he does!
We would like to acknowledge and thank all the advertisers in this year’s Parade Book. We would like to especially thank the Town of Yarmouth’s Tourism Preservation Fund for believing in us and supporting our efforts to bring thousands of people to the Mid-Cape area to help celebrate St. Patrick and the coming of Spring. While you look through this parade book please take note of the many businesses which have supported the parade. It is their generosity and support which makes it possible for us to fund the parade. Please take the time to visit the various establishments that advertise in the parade book and help us say thank you.
This spring we will holding a road race in Yarmouth on Saturday, May 4th. Please join us in helping to support the parade. Our race will begin and end at Sea Gull Beach.
Lastly, on behalf of the entire Parade Committee we welcome you, your family and friends to this year’s parade and cordially invite you to attend many others. Remember our motto “the parade will go on”. See you along the route, rain or snow!!

The Shillelagh that starts our Cape Cod Saint Patrick’s Parade is steeped in tradition.
As a young woman, Mary O’Sullivan of Din-gle Town, County Kerry, left Queenstown at the age of fifteen. The only family heirloom she had was her grandfather’s Shillelagh. Her grandson, a Parade Committee member, asked her why she always carried that thorny stick around? Her reply was simple, but articulate. When she walked down the gangway at Ellis Island, just before she stepped on American soil, she took the Shillelagh and tapped the ground three times, then started her new life. Her grandson asked her about the tapping and why three times. She stated, “I tapped once for the green, once for the white, and once for the gold.” She continued “I had to leave Ireland behind, but I brought the spirit of Ireland with me.”
This same Shillelagh starts our Parade with three taps by our Grand Marshall; once for the green, once for the white and once for the gold.
Thank you, Mary Sullivan. Your spirit has become part of the Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade tradition.

The Sons of Erin Cape Cod and the Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade Committee awards
scholarships to local female high school seniors of Irish descent. The Colleen winner (Queen) will receive a $1,000 scholarship, and the three runner-up court winners will
receive a $500 scholarship each.
Emma O’ConnorEmma is a senior at Harwich High School. Emma has applied to a number of colleges. She hopes to be accepted to Northeastern University as business marketing major. As her guidance counselor stated, “This young woman is really the nuts and bolts behind many of our school-wide activities”. Those activities include participation in the leadership lock-in, peer leader ship class, Best Buddies program, and spirit committee. Emma has also been successful in taking a variety of AP and honors classes. Her volunteer activities showcase her compas-sion such as delivering meals for home bound individuals, coaching soccer for the Special Olympics, organizing Red Cross blood drives, and directing bingo games at a nursing home. Em-ma’s mother immigrated to America from Ireland when she was 22 years old. She has learned about her Irish heritage from her mother, grandmother, and by visiting Ireland. Her grandmother taught her the work ethic to get the job done, to volunteer in the community, and to be persistent.
Rebecca M. TierneyRebecca is a senior at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School. Her caring nature and concern for others dovetails with her plans to enter a nursing program in the fall. One of Rebecca’s teachers notes that she is
a tireless worker who is constantly trying to improve her perfor-mance in the classroom and on the athletic field. She is success-ful academically while maintaining a highly rigorous course load. Rebecca’s student activities have included being a peer leader, participating in student council, and maintaining mem-bership in the National Society. She is a valued member of the varsity volleyball, basketball, and track teams. She also acts as a volunteer for activities including Relay for Life, the Elementary School Christmas Fair, and Toys for Tots. In her essay Rebecca writes, “Growing up within an enthusiastically Irish family has shaped me into the lady that I am today and the woman that I will be for the rest of my life.” In addition, Rebecca adds, “Be-ing able to say that I am Irish is one of the proudest statements I can make.”
Kelly MurphyKelly is a senior at Harwich High School and is currently ranked number one in her class. She anticipates majoring in Middle Eastern Studies in college. This interest was sparked by her desire to understand more thoroughly gender roles for women in that region. Kelly has a warm welcoming nature which compli-ments her fierce academic drive. Her passions include reading, playing field hockey, and participating in the Students Taking Action Now for Darfur. Kelly is president of the National Honor Society, Student Council secretary, and captain of the field hockey and girls’ varsity track teams. Her volunteer work has included teaching young children field hockey skills and work-ing at Brook’s Free Library by performing a variety of duties. Her paternal grandmother immigrated to America directly from Ireland. Kelly’s deep connection with Ireland and Gaelic culture has been strengthened through her grandmother’s stories.
Emma HarneyEmma is a senior attending Dennis-Yar-mouth Regional High School. She has been accepted to several colleges including the honors program at UMass- Amherst. She is contemplating majoring in business. Her academic honors include membership in the National Honor Society as well as being an
AP Scholar. Emma demonstrates leadership skills in a variety of ways such as acting as class president for the past four years and co-chairing the Ambassador Club and senior prom committee. She expands her passion for running by assuming the role of team captain for cross country as well as winter and spring track. Giv-ing to others is also an important attribute that drives Emma. Her contributions have included modeling leadership skills for under-class peers, being a team captain for Relay for Life, and making activity booklets for patients at Children’s Hospital. Emma strives to maintain a commitment to her Irish heritage by consistently displaying a strong work ethic and diligence to succeed.

The Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade Committee is pleased to have
“Derek Sanderson”as the 8th Parade Grand Marshal
Derek was a highly talented young Canadian hockey player who was recruited into the Bos-ton Bruins juniors organization when he was 12 years old. At 20, he was brought up to play in the National Hockey League. His first year playing, he was awarded the NHL Rookie of the Year trophy. The same award that Bobby Orr had won the year before. He became a crucial player on the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup Champion teams of 1970 and 1972.
Derek was a fan favorite. Handsome, highly quotable, an on-ice brawler and an off-ice fun lover, everyone knew Turk. He had a larger than life presence on ice. His moment of hockey immortality came when he provided the perfect pass to Bobby Orr, enabling Bobby to score the overtime 1970 Stanley Cup winning goal, a moment captured in the most famous hockey photo of all time.
Sanderson subsequently grew in national acclaim. He was featured in na-tional magazines, called “hockey’s Joe Namath”, was on Johnny Carson and other TV shows, had roles in two movies, wrote two autobiographies, and was a fashion model and at one time a TV show host. He partnered with Namath in a Boston bar, Bachelors III, increasing his fame and desirability.
In 1972, he left the Bruins and the NHL to sign a multi-million dollar contract with the Philadelphia Blazers of the newly formed World Hockey Association, becoming the world’s highest paid athlete. This moment of great triumph became the moment of his precipitous fall. Everything about his life collapsed at once, he became reviled in Philadelphia as an overpaid under-perform-er. With unlimited money, Derek had no check on his bad habits and drugs and alcohol suddenly ruled his life. He was traded from team to team over the next five years until he was finally banished from hockey due to his addiction.
Within a short time, Derek was broke, his millions gone. He was homeless in NYC for a period, sleeping under bridges and in Central Park. After almost three years of destitution and addiction, Derek found his way to Chicago to seek help from Bobby Orr. Orr Helped Derek get into rehab and after multiple stints, Derek became sober in 1980.
Derek has become that rare individual. Not only has he remained sober, but he has given back on a grand scale. Derek has told his story and spoken of the dangers of drugs and alcohol to an estimated 750,000 young people and adults over thirty years. A com-pelling speaker, he holds nothing back and captivates his audiences with frightening, frank stories of the grip of addition and the difficulty of recovery.
He became the TV color analyst for the Boston Bruins from 1986-1996, broadcast-ing almost 100 games per year. New England sports fans loved his sharp analysis of the game and his willingness to call them as he saw them. To bring his life full circle as Managing Director of The Sports Group at Baystate Wealth Management in Boston, he counsels young athletes about money management matters and assists them in avoiding the disastrous financial mistakes he himself made.
