The community of Boulder Junction traces its roots back to 1903,when railroad tracks were laid through this beautiful corner ofWisconsin’s Northwoods. Though the rail line was built for theshipment of white pine logs, it also became a pipeline for huntersand anglers who flocked to this untouched area. A number ofresorts popped up to serve the growing number of vacationers.

In the 1930s, a Chicago sportswriter who regularly vacationed inBoulder Junction coined the phrase, “Musky Capital of the World,”a label which stuck, due to the fact that more musky are caughtfrom Boulder Junction area lakes than any other similarly sizedarea. The phrase was awarded a trademark in 1971.

To learn more about Boulder Junction’s history visit the BoulderJunction Historical Museum located next to the community center. The museum is open Memorial Day to Labor Day, Tuesdays andSaturdays from 10am to 2pm. Admission is free. There is also aBoulder Junction History Book available at a number of locationsthroughout town.

Boulder Junction is home to an unusually large number of albinodeer. Sometimes referred to as white deer or ghost deer, thesestunning white-tailed deer are true albinos, exhibiting purewhite coats as well as pink noses, ears and hooves. To see oneis an unforgettable experience.

Why are there so many albino deer in Boulder Junction? No oneknows for sure. It is illegal for hunters to shoot an albino deer,so perhaps this has allowed an existing population of albinodeer to grow. Also, due to their uniqueness, people probablyfeed and look after the albino deer more than other deer.

Whatever the reason, Boulder Junction has more albino deerthan any other place in Wisconsin.
