This award means more to me than being recognized for the quality and service I give to my clients, this award recognizes the many amazing
members of our community who throughout the past 33 years have and continue to support me in successfully establishing myself both
personally and professionally.
Many of these community members are not only some of our BEST professionals and business owners, they are also some of the BEST contributors to our community, oftentimes serving several roles at a time as parents, coaches, mentors and volunteers. Without this
community’s commitment to being the BEST, it’s hard to imagine that living here would be as special as it is. Lake Tahoe’s beauty is truly
enhanced by the hearts of the people here. We are so fortunate to be living and thriving in the BEST place to call “Home” and I cannot
express enough thanks to all of you that make Lake Tahoefeel like one big family.
Professionally, I promise to always provide the BEST service and resources to all of my clients and personally I am committed to community, actively reaching out and developing positive ways in

6 I BEST OF TAHOE© 2013
WELCOME.
Best of Tahoe© 2013 is finally here. For 19 years and counting, we’ve asked you to vote on your favorite people, places, dining, activities and more, and each year you come out in droves to support them. This year was no exception, and we are pleased to showcase the winners in this year’s Best of Tahoe© magazine.
What does the Best of Tahoe© really mean? We like to think that that each winner represents the essence and culture of Tahoe. We asked questions like: What does it mean to live here … to wake up each morning to snow-capped mountains and close the evening with a gorgeous Tahoe sunset over the lake? Where are the secret spots for both locals and visitors alike, the hidden gems and longtime favorite haunts? Who are the people who make this place special, who greet us with a smile or give us the insider tips?
We hope that the 100 categories that were presented this year and their winners showcase what it truly means to live and play here. It’s quite an honor to be recognized as a winner and one that should be celebrated. Make sure to use this magazine as a guide to the best that we have to offer here in Tahoe and discover what truly makes our end of the lake shine.
Congratulations to the winners!

BEST ANNUAL EVENTFOURTH OF JULY FIREWORKSThe Fourth of July Fireworks show, called “Lights on the Lake,” is a choreographed show that sets fireworks to music played on KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL-AM 1490. The show is made more spectacular by the colorful reflections on the lake. Whether you’re watching from Lakeview Commons or a beach at the state line, there isn’t a bad seat in the house.
BEST BEACHBALDWIN BEACHThose who like to relax in the sun can sit on the shore at Baldwin Beach without worrying about the afternoon sun casting shadows over them as they sunbathe. There are fewer rocks in the sand at Baldwin Beach, so it’s a good place to dig your toes in the sand. There’s a fantastic view of Tallac in one direction and a view across the lake from the other. Time spent on the shore of Baldwin Beach is time well spent.
BEST LIVE MUSICHARVEYS OUTDOOR ARENAThe South Shore has a few outdoor venues for summer concerts, but Harveys Outdoor Arena takes the cake. Stationed at the back of the Harveys parking lot, the venue accommodates about 7,000 people and is set up so every seat in the house is a good one. The Summer Concert Series is known for drawing big names. This year’s lineup includes Tim McGraw, Phish and fun.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE TAHOE DAILY TRIBUNE I 11
BEST BIKE TRAILCORRALCorral missed the $100,000 Bell Built Grant by one percentage point, but locals are still fundraising to upgrade this one-of-a-kind mountain bike trail with bigger, better features and sustainable erosion-control measures. The multi-use track off Fountain Place Road demonstrates what collaboration between local mountain bikers and the U.S. Forest Service can achieve. The popular, low-elevation trail opens up early and offers terrain for all levels of downhill riders.
BEST CROSS-COUNTRY SKIINGKIRKWOOD MOUNTAIN RESORTIf you’re looking for wide-open terrain nestled beneath rugged volcanic formations, Kirkwood Mountain Resort’s cross-country ski center is the place for you. The facility boasts 80 kilometers of high-elevation groomed trails, with routes for novice skiers to professional racers. New to the sport? The center also offers lessons in both classic and skating disciplines.
BEST CAMPGROUNDFALLEN LEAF LAKEThis wooded campground is located a quarter mile north of Fallen Leaf Lake, within biking distance of the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, the Tallac Historic Site and the Pope and Baldwin beaches. Head south to Fallen Leaf Lake and you can access some of the best trails into Desolation Wilderness — including a route up Mt. Tallac.
12 I BEST OF TAHOE© 2013
BEST DOWNHILL SKIINGHEAVENLY MOUNTAIN RESORTWith 4,800 aces of skiable terrain, it’s no wonder Heavenly Mountain Resort was voted best downhill skiing. Heavenly’s 10,067-foot summit is the highest in Lake Tahoe. The resort 97 trails, ranging from wide-open cruisers to plunging 1,600-foot chutes. At 3,500 feet in length, Heavenly’s vertical drop is also the longest in California. Added bonus, Heavenly has three easy access points that are spread through the South Shore.
BEST PLACE TO WATCH THE SUNSETCAVE ROCKHikers perched on top of Cave Rock can peer west across the blue waters of Tahoe as the sun sets above the summit of Mt. Tallac and into the granite realms of Desolation Wilderness. A half-mile hike and short, rocky scramble will take you to the Cave Rock summit, the perfect venue for a relaxing picnic as you watch the sunset.
BEST LAKE RECREATIONSTAND-UP PADDLING It’s hard to imagine a sport better suited to Lake Tahoe. Stand-up paddling is easy and accessible to almost anyone. Rentals are widespread and retail shops have popped up around the lake. Tahoe’s perfect waters and a slew of big races have also helped transform the area into a destination for paddling.
BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE TAHOE DAILY TRIBUNE I 13
BEST FAMILY NIGHT OUTTAHOE BOWLTahoe Bowl is older than South Lake Tahoe itself, but renovations over the years, including the latest addition of an outdoor patio complete with a big screen TV have maintained the 16-lane bowling alley as a favorite among visitors and locals alike. “We are still Tahoe’s Favorite Family Fun Center and the only bowling center in South Lake Tahoe,” according to the bowling alley’s website.
BEST HIKING TRAILMT. TALLACThe rocky summit of Mt. Tallac affords stunning views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding lakes and communities, so it’s no wonder that this distinctive South Shore peak was voted the best hiking trail in the region. There are two routes to the top — the Glen Alpine Trail south of Fallen Leaf Lake and the Mt. Tallac trailhead off Highway 89 — both of which are strenuous, but reward hikers with vistas that make the aerobic effort worthwhile.
View from the Mt. Tallac hiking trail.

I am happy to say I love all the wonderful company of my clients and friends. My work allows me to be creative and gives me satisfaction to see the beautiful outcome of some of the extreme nails that I have designed and customized for each individual. My younger generation girls...help me stay up on the latest and newest styles, pushing me to a higher level. They are sweet. Then I have some long term clients, almost like family who I have been doing their nails for over 20 years, Thank you. I feel like my job is rewarding knowing I can make a difference in someone’s
day, and that they will enjoy the nails I have created. I would also like to thank my family and God for without them I would go crazy!

BEST DOCTORDR. PATRICK MARTINThe list of patient compliments is long when it comes to describing Dr. Patrick Martin’s care. The family and general practitioner working out of Barton Memorial Hospital gets five stars across the board from his patients on RateMDs.com The overall consensus is that Martin cares about his patients. He’s approachable, takes time to listen and gets to know the people he helps. He is also sympathetic to finding affordable treatment options and incredibly knowledgeable. One patient sums Martin up as, “Best doctor in the world.”
BEST HOTEL SERVICE PERSONNELRICH HEFFELFINGERLongtime South Lake Tahoe resident Rich Heffelfinger has earned the love and respect of his co-workers. “He’s been around here for a long time. He’s very informative. If he doesn’t know the answer to a question, he’ll find out,” Harrah’s concierge Vanessa Heckendorn said. “He’s also a great dad.” Heffelfinger, concierge supervisor at the Stateline casino, commutes from Gardnerville, Nev., to his South Shore job, but he hasn’t lost his rapport with the locals or his insider knowledge of the Tahoe community.
BEST SKI INSTRUCTORCHRISTINE WOODCOCKIt’s hard to find a ski instructor that has real credibility, but look no further than Christine Woodcock. The Heavenly Resort instructor has skied competitively for years and counts first place giant slalom finishes in the Junior Olympics among her distinctions.

BEST NURSE TAMARA BURNS AT BARTON ER“Tamara is one of the most positive and energetic nurses in the Emergency Department. She is community minded and volunteers for many community programs as well as organizes many community projects,” according to Barton Health Emergency Department Co-Director Beth Brown. “Tamara not only puts her patient first but, she is willing to go above and beyond for them to make sure they are well taken care of, and that patients have what they need to continue taking care of themselves when they return home.”
BEST PUBLIC SERVICE OFFICERTRAVIS CABRALTravis Cabral, a South Lake Tahoe native, traded in his mogul skis for a badge about five years ago and has been serving the community where he grew up ever since. “He’s a public figure in this community, and it’s nice that such a known person in this town is in (our department),” said Sgt. Cam Carmichael at the time Cabral was hired. “He’s an absolutely great kid all the way around.”
BEST BARTENDEREDGAR RODRIGUEZEdgar keeps the suds flowing at local’s favorite Steamers Bar & Grill. The former South Tahoe High School student embraces the bar’s love of Bay Area teams like the San Francisco 49ers and is quick with a smile and a refill. With more than a few bars in town, Rodriguez faced stiff competition for the “Best of Tahoe” bartender spot, but ultimately came out on top.

Unless you’re a SCUBA diver, you need to learn the language, according to Pierce. “I think first and foremost I come to the college to be a good role model for my students and to teach them these crucial language skills,” she said. “I’m really honored.”
BEST LOCAL BANDIKE & MARTINPerforming together for almost two decades this local acoustic duo boasts a deep song list and can be found performing dozens of shows around the lake each year. “From their first musical meeting in Phoenix, their chemistry was undeniable.
