PRESIDENT (2 Candidates)

My name is Nielsen Gabriel. I first served you as an ASI committee member and then represented the students of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) as their Director, while also serving as Vice Chair to the Board of Directors (BOD). I represented more than 3,000 students from my college, empowering them with a voice within the University. This year, I've had the honor of serving the entire campus as the Executive Vice President (EVP), Chair to the BOD and of all internal committees. As EVP, I lead the Farmer's Market Task Force, hold Town Halls, and ensure that the student voice is heard. I also advocate for more than 427,000 students of the CSU on two systemwide committees. After three consecutive years with ASI, I am now ready to serve [YOU] as ASI President!

I have experienced the issues, concerns, and potential of our campus. I've had to sit on the floor of classrooms, wait multiple semesters for a course, and struggle to pay for school. My tenure with ASI will allow me to SERVE the students and fix these issues. We can open more vital course sections by working with College Deans, provide more scholarship opportunities within ASI and by working with campus entities, and UNITE with the 22 other CSU campuses to defend higher education. I look forward to serving [YOU] as President and discovering what we can ACHIEVE together.

PRESIDENT (2 Candidates)

LEAD Educate -Advocate -Connect

Hi, Fellow Hornets! My name is Kyle Tanaka and I am running to be your ASI President. I believe that I am the right choice to represent our student body. I have been involved in multiple clubs and organizations in my time in college such as Sigma Chi, IFC, PRSSA, College Democrats, and the Arts and Letters Joint Council. Through these organizations I have met and interacted with countless students that share a similar passion for our campus, our school, and our community. The biggest area of focus I want to bring to ASI is a stronger push for student involvement. Whether it is a more focused approach to clubs and organizations, or encouraging students to get involved with student committees, the commitment to our success needs to be clear and focused. In doing so, I will improve the communication between the students and the administration by shaping and putting in place a strong campus agenda. As ASI President, it is my job to represent your voice on this campus, to work diligently with campus administrators to better our campus life. LEAD is about assembling students who come from all areas of campus and student life. We are looking to bring different temperaments, talents, and convictions to the board next semester. If you are looking for new ideas, new passion, we want to build together a new ASI. Thank you for your support! Vote Kyle Tanaka for ASI President.

(2 Candidates)

My name is William White and I am running to be your next Director of SSIS. As an undergraduate at Sac State I served as a teaching assistant and peer mentor in the Government Department. As a Lead Mentor in the Odyssey program I helped students find the right path for them and brought people together through organization mixers and career panels. As an officer of College Democrats, I worked to bring the voice of the students to the forefront of state politics through voter registration and campaign efforts directed at improving the lives of youth throughout our region. As a graduate student and professional educator, I will bring my diverse academic and professional experience to the service of the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies. As your director, I will empower students through campus events which highlight issues important to our college and aim to educate students with issues and legislation that affect them. Drawing on my political experience, I will work to connect clubs and local leaders of all types to ensure that the diverse interests within our college are recognized on campus. I will create a platform and council for organizations within the college to share their ideas and for employers in the region to present unique opportunities to our students. Although we have different passions, only together can we make an impact. Vote William White for Director of SSIS.

Graduate Director (1 Candidate)

LEAD

Educate -Advocate -Connect

I am Matthew L. Steinwert, current Psychology Graduate student; and I am running to be your Graduate Director. I have spent both my Graduate and Undergrad years attending Sacramento State. I am currently a member of the Psi Chi Honor Society, the College Democrats, and an active statistics and psychology tutor for the Services to Students with Disabilities (SSWD). I have spent my Graduate years working on many research projects, and presented many at professional conferences. My research focuses on evaluation of statistical methods utilized in psychological research. As a Graduate student I understand the high level of demand required for student thesis, research, and projects, and I also know how important funding is for these items. If elected as Graduate Director, I will make it my highest priority to educate Grad students about information regarding grants and scholarships directed towards our Graduate studies, while increasing the ease of obtaining them. I will be an advocate to increase funding into Graduate programs so that we can produce higher quality work that we as Grad students deserve. In addition, through my connections with the career center, I will develop better ways to find local, paid work positions that can be easily held while working towards your Graduate degree. Remember to Vote Matthew Steinwert as your Graduate Director.

Measure 1 Shall the Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) Articles of Incorporation, Article IX be amended as follows to bring ASI into compliance with the recent revision to Title 5 (Education), California Code of Regulations, Section 42600 adopted by the CSU Board of Trustees on May 9, 2012? ARTICLES OF INCORPORATION Article IX “Upon dissolution of this Corporation, net assets other than trust funds shall be distributed to one or more nonprofit corporations organized and operated for the benefit of California State University, Sacramento, or the students, or the students and faculty at that University. The successor corporation or corporations shall be selected by the Board of Directors, and approved by the President of the University and by the Board of Trustees Chancellor of the CSU System. Such successor nonprofit corporation or corporations must be qualified for federal income tax exemption under Sections 501 (a) and 501 (c) (3) of the United States Revenue Code of 1954 and be organized and operated exclusively for charitable, scientific, literary, or educational purposes, or for a combination of said purposes. In the alternative, upon dissolution of the corporation, net assets other than trust funds may be distributed by the Board of Directors with the approval of the President of the University and the Board of Trustees Chancellor of the CSU System to California State University, Sacramento. If, upon dissolution, this corporation holds any assets in trust, such assets shall be disposed of in such manner as may be directed by decree of the superior court of the county of which this corporation’s principal office is located, upon petition therefore by the Attorney General or by any person concerned in the liquidation. In no event shall any assets be distributed to any current or previous member, director, or officer of this corporation.” Analysis of Measure 1

May 9, 2012, the Board of Trustees of the California State University (CSU) approved a revision to Title 5 (Education), California Code of Regulations, Section 42600 which delegated authority to the CSU Chancellor, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, to approve the dissolution of auxiliary organizations’ assets should ASI be “dissolved” (discontinued).

Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is a recognized auxiliary organization of the CSU and must be in legal compliance with the revised Code to maintain its “good standing” with the CSU and Sacramento State. ASI is also a separate non-profit entity governed by a separate board of directors and operating under its own Articles of Incorporation. As presented in Measure 1, the ASI Articles of Incorporation, Article IX must be amended to recognize the CSU Chancellor’s newly delegated authority on behalf of the Trustees and bring ASI into compliance with the governing Code.

Per ASI Bylaws, “amendments to Bylaws or to Articles of Incorporation shall be proposed to the student electorate.” Measure 1 provides Sacramento State students the opportunity to vote on the proposed amendment to ASI Articles of Incorporation, Article IX.

A “Yes” vote amends the Articles of Incorporation as proposed in Measure 1.

A “No” vote retains the current Articles of Incorporation.
