What are the things you must understand of your client’s business? How can you lead a successful practice that is connected to your community and admired by your neighbors? What are the

major changes taking place with how the next generation of architects is being prepared? How will Millennials change the way your firm operates?

Join us as the answers to these questions and more are considered, discussed and debated by national and international thought leaders at the 2013 AIA Florida Convention. Under the leadership of Convention Chair Virgilio Campaneria, AIA, and AIA Florida Vice President Joe Garcia, AIA, our Convention Committee has put together what may well be the most important and thought-provoking convention in the history of AIA Florida. Architects, leading industry professionals, educators and students will engage in a dialogue on the most pressing issues of the day.

In keeping with this year’s theme, “Designed Intervention” our Convention Committee has prepared tracks for: Education, Engagement, Environment and Health. In addition, there are Emerging Professionals focus sessions to address the career development interests of associates, recent graduates and students. Our kickoff speaker, Robert Ivy, FAIA will share groundbreaking developments connecting research and practice and the critical role of architects in determining public health outcomes. John Peterson, AIA, Founder & President of Public Architecture will be the Keynote Speaker. In addition, we will have two General Sessions; Dean Monica Ponce de Leon, AIA, of the Taubman College at the University of Michigan will speak about the leading edge trends in architectural education and Dan Pitera, FAIA, will share the story of a practice that engages the underserved and trains architects to produce award winning work.

If you’ve attended many AIA Florida Conventions before, or if it is your first time, you will want to be sure to join us in Orlando. I’ll be pleased to welcome you to the city I call home. Orlando is a hub of creativity, entertainment, innovation and contradiction and has much to offer.

When Florida’s community of architects come together to learn, exchange ideas and be inspired it is truly one of the highlights of working in a demanding industry. Join us as we celebrate the achievements of Florida’s architects in shaping the future of Florida. The AIA Florida 2013 Convention awaits you!

BIM Implementation: Catalyst for Process ChangeFriday, August 9th | 9:30 am – 11:30 am | 2 LU Hours (2 HSW)

In the book The Owner’s Dilemma, Barbara Bryson makes a profound statement about the design and construction industry; “…ours is the only trillion dollar industry in the history of the world in which clients routinely demand the most inefficient processes creating the least value…” While these inefficiencies exist, they can be looked at as opportunities to provide solutions that add value to a project. The proper application of a Building Information Modeling process provides a consistent information conduit that begins with the end in mind. Learn what is in a BIM Execution Plan, and how this tool lays the groundwork for defining and delivering what the owner expects from using BIM, and critical issues of agreement on how the design team will deliver it. By employing this tool at the onset of contract negotiations, the project will be better organized, with the correct level of granularity defined to serve the owners needs and budget.

Education, Engagement and Culture Change to Shape Resilient CommunitiesSaturday, August 10th | 10:30 am – 12:00 pm | 1.5 LU Hours (1.5 HSW)

Architects have a unique opportunity to lead positive change in shaping communities. In light of recent weather events such as Super Storm Sandy, communities have a heightened awareness of the practical ramifications of storm events. Businesses, institutions and local governments are beginning to ask what they need to know and how they can plan for health and resilience while struggling with existing economic challenges. There is a marked increase in requests for adaptation and climate change planning. This workshop will provide an overview of design and planning issues and then focus in detail on both internal and external activities that firms can undertake to engage their communities and clients. Externally, architects bring a systems-wide perspective to efforts such as community education and local government regulation. Internally, firms need to institutionalize knowledge, systems, processes and methodologies that achieve high performing, resilient designs. Participants will leave with frameworks and roadmaps to position themselves to take on the challenges that exist in every community.

Mosaics & Tapestries: Civic Engagement and Defining Detroit Future CitySaturday, August 10th | 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm | 1.5 LU Hours (1.5 HSW)

This talk will focus on two primary lines of thought: 1) Robust civic participation in the design process does not mean that we have to abandon the tools of our disciplines—whether architecture, landscape architecture, urban design or planning. Our work can naturally include diverse people in the decision-making process; 2) Many of our cities require solutions that no longer place a priority on building more buildings.

The civic engagement work of the Detroit Collaborative Design Center in Detroit, Michigan that resulted in Detroit Future City decision-making framework will be used to foster a position that architects, designers and planners, through our unique process, can be key operators in a new ecological and equitable urban revitalization.

Speaker: Dan Pietra, FAIA, ACD, Detroit Collaboration Design Center

Session M:

Evolving Generations and Demographics in the WorkforceSaturday, August 10th | 3:15 pm – 4:45 pm | 1.5 LU Hours

The pace of change in the workplace is increasing daily. We have four generations with profoundly different motivations, interpersonal dynamics and work styles. As our country argues over immigration, we do not have enough skilled workers in many professions or urban centers. We continue to lose women in the workplace even though professional degree graduation ratios are 50:50 male to female. Top it off with a longer than expected recession that actually increased our efficiency. Learn what key companies and even other countries are doing to adapt to these ever-changing challenges.

Speaker: Laurie Dryer, Stantec

Session N:

Lake|Flato: Engaging the EnvironmentSaturday, August 10th | 3:15 pm – 4:45 pm | 1.5 LU Hours (1.5 HSW)

The presentation will examine three recent Lake|Flato projects in three very different environmental contexts as examples of unique site specific design that engage building uses into the natural environment. A LEED platinum visitor center located along the Gulf Coast is an urban adaptive reuse corporate headquarters and a new campus in the desert southwest, frame the discussion of how nature, place and craft overlay on program and budget to drive sustainable strategies and the design process. Each project also was challenged by unique circumstances: environment, budget and schedule. The presentation will discuss strategies that create more productive and healthy environments by engaging building users into the natural context.

Speaker: Andrew Herdeg, AIA, Lake|Flato

CGI Golf Tournamentwww.waldorfastoriaorlando.com/golf | 7:00 am – 1:00 pm

Designed with a five-tee system for all playing abilities, yet quite challenging, the Waldorf Astoria Golf Club provides a truly exceptional setting for Orlando golf. Holes are visually arresting from tee to green and require intelligent management of the game. Bunkers are carved to be reminiscent of the hazards designed on courses a century ago. Tour: Nemours Children’s HospitalFriday, August 9 8:30 am – 12:30 pm | 1.5 LU Hours (1.5 HSW)

nemours Children’s Hospital is a state-of-the-art academic pediatric hospital designed to deliver holistic, family-centered care. In keeping with a mission emphasis on whole-child healing, the 60-acre campus and 630,000 square foot hospital are linked by a “hospital-in-a-garden” theme. Plantings that surround the building can be viewed from every patient room and most treatment areas; rooftop gardens provide therapy space for patients and respite for patients and family members. Inside, the garden theme blooms in a bright and varied color scheme; textural wall treatments; playful glass leaf etchings vining across a glass wall; and large, plentiful windows that brighten almost every patient area.

Also of note is an emphasis on hospitality. Rooms are private and oversized to accommodate family members; common areas are designed for comfort; treatment areas are scaled and supplied for the children who will use them. The nCH design team includes Stanley Beaman & Sears, Perkins+Will and IDEO, with construction by Skanska USA.

Two years ago AIA Florida initiated a social responsibility raffle program, giving back to the community in which the convention was held. The proceeds from the raffles

were donated to the local Habitat for Humanity Chapter in each city, and in two years raised over $7,000. Continuing the tradition this year, the raffle will be for a cruise on Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruise Lines. The winner will be able to select the ship, length of the trip, and cabin type to any ports-of-call of your choice. Plan to purchase several raffle tickets and win a trip to the Caribbean, Bermuda, Alaska or Europe – you decide! Proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando Area.
