Rheta Grimsley Johnson has covered the South for over three decades as a newspaper reporter and columnist. She writes about ordinary but fascinating people, mining for universal meaning in individual stories. In past reporting for United Press International, The Commercial Appeal of Memphis, the Atlanta Journal Constitution and a number of other regional newspapers, Johnson has won national awards. They include the Ernie Pyle Memorial Award for human interest reporting (1983), the Headliner Award for commentary (1985), the American Society of Newspaper Editors’ Distinguished Writing Award for commentary (1982). In 1986 she was inducted into the Scripps Howard Newspapers Editorial Hall of Fame. In 1991 Johnson was one of three finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for commentary. Syndicated today by King Features of New York, Johnson’s column appears in about 50 papers nationwide. She is the author of several books, including America’s Faces (1987) and Good Grief: The Story of Charles M. Schulz (1989). In 2000 she wrote the text for a book of photographs entitled Georgia. A native of Colquitt, Ga., Johnson grew up in Montgomery, Ala., studied journalism at Auburn University and has lived and worked in the South all of her career. In December 2010, Johnson married retired Auburn University history professor Hines Hall.

Senator Waggoner, born in Birmingham, Alabama, on January 8, 1937, is serving his sixth term in the Senate after serving from 1966-1983 in the House of Representatives. Senator Waggoner, President, Birmingham Business Consultants, LLC, received his B.A. degree from Birmingham Southern College and his J.D. degree from Birmingham School of Law. He and his wife Marilyn are the parents of four children: Scott (deceased), Mark, Lyn Waggoner Kilpatrick, and Jay.Senator Waggoner is a Republican and a member of the Homewood Church of Christ. He serves on the following boards: Executive Committee of Birmingham Business Alliance; Faulkner University Board of Trustees; Member of Birmingham, Hoover, Shelby County, Vestavia Hills Chambers of Commerce; Member Vestavia Hills Civitan Club; Inducted into the Birmingham Southern College Sports Hall of Fame, 2007; Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau; Alabama Sports Hall of Fame; and Pinnacle Bank. He served as head coach of the Birmingham Touchdown Club and was president of the Birmingham Tip-Off Club.

Senator Waggoner was elected Senate Minority Leader from 2002-2010.Senator Waggoner was elected Senate Majority Leader on December 8, 2010.

Senator Waggoner has the longest record of service, of any legislator from Jefferson County, in Alabama history.

Recipient of the Ronald Reagan Lifetime Achievement Award, 2012.Elected by the Alabama Republican Executive Committee to serve as an Elector in the 2012 Presidential Campaign.

Representative Jay Love was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in November, 2002.

Born and raised in Montgomery, Representative Love graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and received his B.A. in Business Administration from Auburn University at Montgomery.

As a former restaurant owner, he was selected as one of the Top 40 business leaders under 40 by the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce.

He and his wife, Cheri, have four children: Rachel, Addison, Rebecca, and Caroline. Representative Love is a member of First Baptist Church of Montgomery.

A Camden, Alabama, native and a 1967 graduate of Auburn University, Kay Ivey has had a career in the private sector (as a banker and assistant hospital administrator), as well as a career in public service (as a high school teacher and as Reading Clerk of the Alabama House of Representatives). Her public service also includes being appointed by three governors to various positions in state government, including Assistant Director of the Department of Commerce, formerly known as the Alabama Development Office.

In 2002, Kay became the first Republican elected State Treasurer since Reconstruction and was re-elected in 2006.

As Treasurer, Kay Ivey proved her commitment to taxpayers by making the office more open, transparent, and efficient.

Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey is committed to job creation and preparing students for the 21st century workforce. This commitment has resulted in her service as Chairman of the Job Creation and Military Stability Commission, Vice Chairman of the Aerospace States Association and acting as an advocate for the Real World Design Challenge, in Alabama. She also serves as the spokeswoman for the Alabama Forestry Associations Black Belt Initiative and is participating with Auburn University in their campaign to end child hunger.

She is a member of the First Baptist Church of Montgomery, the Montgomery Rotary Club, the Board of Directors of the Montgomery YMCA, and the Tukabatchee Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Lt. Governor Kay Ivey is also honored to be the first Alabama Girls State alumnus elected to an Alabama Constitutional Office.

Dora Fenderson is a native of Montgomery. She is a full time Administrator employed with the Montgomery Public School System, and has been an Aerobics Instructor since 1996. She is AFAA certified in Group Exercise (2001). Not only does Dora teaches Step, KickBoxing, Strength, Circuit and Zumba, but she is a past NANBF Body Building competitor of the Montgomery area. She loves to teach and has fun doing it. Hobbies: Singing, Dancing, Cooking, Teaching Sunday School to Kids.

She has sold more than 30 million copies of her books, and is published in 32 languages.Fractured, the second novel in the Will Trent series, debuted at number one in the UK and the Netherlands, and was the number one adult fiction title in Australia. At the same time, Faithless (Gottlos) published in Germany at number one.Slaughter was born in a small southern Georgia community. Now residing in Atlanta, she is widely credited with coining the term "investigoogling" in 2006.Slaughter is currently part of a "Save the Libraries" event that benefits the DeKalb County Public Library.

Dr. Camila Alire

Through her professional positions, professional service, and scholarship, Dr. Camila Alire is recognized as a library leader. She is Dean Emerita at the University of New Mexico and Colorado State University. She received her doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Northern Colorado and her MLS from the University of Denver. She has served the profession well as president of ALA (2009), president of the Association for College and Research Libraries (ACRL 2005), and president of national REFORMA (1993).Camila has co-authored books on academic librarianship, emotionally intelligent leadership, library services to Latino communities; and disaster planning/recovery.Because of her leadership and scholarship abilities, Camila was honored with the ALA/Lippincott Award for Distinguished Service; the CALA Presidential Recognition Award, and the ALA Achievement in Library Diversity Research Award. She also received the first ALA Elizabeth Futas’ Catalyst for Change Award and the National REFORMA’s Librarian of the Year Award. Camila was recently nominated by President Barrack Obama to serve on the National Council on the Humanities.
