24 FINANCIAL REPORT.

Evanston, III., July 1, 1902.

To the Trustees of Northwestern University.

Gentlemen : I have examined the books of the Treasurer for the

year ending June 30, 1902, including all receipts and payments with

the vouchers relating thereto, and find them correct. The securities

on hand have been checked off by me, and they agree with the records

in the office. The report of the Treasurer issued under that date

represents accurately the assets and liabilities of the University as they

stood at that time. AUDITING COMMITTEE,By Frank P. Crandon,

Chairman.

The committee feels the great need of a head to the Anatom-ical Department. We have had that department carried on by

instructors for a year. However, it neither looks well to pros,

pective students nor is it right that so important a branch should

be left to instructors Suitable teachers for it would increase our

budget $2,000 at least.

Our Professor of Pathology asks for three assistants whichwill cost $950 more and for $200 more for material than we have

appropriated. He also desires thirty new microscopes which wouldcost $3,000.

It is very desirable that our Professor of Hygiene have a

laboratory of Hygiene to encourage research work in that study.

This we also feel unable to establish, as we do not see where the

Deeded money is to come from.

These are some of the present pressing needs of the school.

Microscopical Laboratories at a salary not exceeding $250.00 oach

during the coming year.

9th. That the salary of Robt. Simms be increased to $50.00

per month.

Some of these items may not require any action by your Board

of Trustees, but I have given this detailed statement of the action

clearer understanding of the situation in our school.

Northwestern University was founded and has been perpetuated

tlirough the generosity of its friends, supplemented by the sagacious

and painstaking labors of its Board of Trustees. No list of donors or

donations has, so far as we have been able to learn, ever been compiled,

and the result following may need to be revised as new information

reaches us on the subject. We will be grateful if friends of the Uni-

versity will send us information by which our list may be more com-

plete and due credit be given those who have so kindly contributed.

It is especially difficult to properly give credit to donors of books

for the library and material for the museum. Nor have we noted

another class of contributions that camiot well be measured in money

;

namely, the devotion of time and skill, without compensation, to the

affairs of the institution, on the part of some of its officers and mem-bers of committees during a long period of years, notably that of the

Secretary of the Board and Chairman of the Auditing Committee, Mr.

Frank P. Crandon, whose duties have so greatly increased during the

past ten years.
