Report from the

Head of SchoolDear Friends,

From the start of day on August 20th, the first day of school in our 101st year, it was clear the year would prove to be a special one. Our senior kindergarten students launched our “Make Your Mark A Good One by Showing Gratitude” theme with a remarkable performance at our assembly in September. Early in the year, we also had a wonderful Family Night at the Zoo where students had the great opportunity to feed the stingrays. Our second graders continued their annual tradition of performing “The Doorbell Rang” with a new twist, holding the play in the Innovation Room and featuring “trailer” videos for each member of the performing cast on the Immersion Wall. These highlights from the first weeks of school set the stage for a stellar year filled with traditions old and new.

In October, Wilson became the first (and only) school in St. Louis to participate in the Global Cardboard Challenge. This program inspired all grades to use their creativity to make cardboard constructions that fit with units of study. We held a culminating family event filling the Eugene Ruth Gymnasium with unique structures, all made from cardboard.

Let Me Run, a new running club for boys, began in fall 2013 and quickly became a wonderful pairing to our long-standing Girls on the Run club. We became such a key member of this national club that we served as the host site for the annual coaches meeting and training seminar. We also offered Destination Imagination (DI) for the first time. The two inaugural Wilson teams were extremely successful as both qualified for the state-level competition. One of the teams even qualified for the global competition and traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to participate. As you can see, the fall was filled with energy and rigor and new opportunities for fitness and creative thinking that so perfectly fit our mission to prepare students for success in an ever-changing world.

The winter was one of the coldest on record for St. Louis; though, it did not freeze excitement within the school. Sponsored by the Excellence Program, we enjoyed an author and artist visit. Former Wilson parent, June Herman (Andrea ’06 & Michael ’08) shared her book, “Goodnight St. Louis.” Our students enjoyed the visit, which complemented

the curriculum Mrs. Linda Noel, one of our exceptional pre-kindergarten teachers, is publishing. The students also benefited from the multi-day visit by artist Maria Ojascastro. Creating art from reusable materials truly inspired our students. Clearly they can think “outside-of-the-box” because their works of art were amazing!

Spring brought even more new firsts. We launched the new MyWilson portal where students and parents can go for school happenings, class information, and of course wonderful pictures. The portal actually is best described as a learning management system through which our older students can also access grades and homework. Our upper grades piloted the use of on-line collaborative computer applications so that students and teachers can work together on a common research or writing project in real time. Supporting these initiatives was a parent session on the use of social media and online interaction led by nationally-renowned expert Devorah Heitner.

Whereas we have the good fortune of seeing high levels of success each year, the 2014 Annual Awards Assembly was one for the books! We saw awards for writing, math, science, fitness, Greek Mythology and so much more. It is wonderful to recognize the high number of regional and state awards, and this year we earned an impressive number at the national level.

The Wilson School had a lot to celebrate in our 101st academic year. Our culture of partnership with families allows for these successes. Thank you for supporting our students, faculty and staff and for helping Wilson in every way possible!

Sincerely,

Thad Falkner,Head of School

Report from the

Board PresidentDear Friends,

Wilson’s 101st year was a time of continued investment in educational excellence, celebration, and visionary strategic planning for the future. Central to our school mission is preparing students for success in an ever-changing world. To do that, Wilson continually builds upon the foundation of the school’s century-long experience with innovative tools, techniques and curricula that engage and inspire our students to become life-long learners.

For the first full year, Wilson students and educators enjoyed the benefits of our recent capital projects. The Innovation Room facilitates group work and problem solving and is of immense value in the creative instruction of all curriculum subjects across all grade levels. The Immersion Wall affords students the opportunity to connect with experts, participate in virtual field trips, collaborate, and experience virtual demonstrations. The expanded foreign language room and dedicated library learning space provide enhanced individualized instruction, and the renovated front entrance allows us to “welcome people well” to Wilson. In addition, during the summer of 2014, the front plaza was expanded to the north side of the building and includes an outdoor classroom, enabling our students to be inspired by our natural environment.

In 2013-14, we celebrated the closing of the Centennial Campaign, the largest and most successful capital campaign in school history. Wilson raised $2,225,000 to fund our capital projects and grow the endowment that is so critical to our continued success. The Annual Fund and Thistle Auction collectively contributed nearly $250,000 towards school operations, while the Excellence Fund generated $73,000 in additional support. The Excellence Fund not only provides opportunities for professional development well above the national norm (and twice the resources of our peer schools) but it also serves as a catalyst for innovative programs and partnership. In addition, Wilson launched its first-ever Planned Giving initiative to support our growing endowment.

Much of the efforts of the Board of Trustees during 2013-14 focused on long-range planning and refining our strategic vision for the school – a vision that closely aligns with our

mission and leverages our strengths for continued success. These activities launched in April 2013 at a retreat attended by trustees, faculty, administration, and parent volunteers. Retreat participants discussed overall trends in independent education, global and national strategic themes, and salient trends specifically related to Wilson. Coming out of the 2013 retreat, the Board identified three strategic areas for further evaluation – establishing excellence in marketing; leveraging our global competencies; and seeking new revenue sources.

During 2013-14, planning sub-committees for each of these three focus areas were tasked with additional research and strategic evaluation and presented findings at a retreat in April 2014. In spring 2015, the Board of Trustees intends to share the planning results that will position Wilson for continued success in the next 10 years and well beyond.

As I reflect on my two years as Board President, I am further convinced that Wilson is well prepared for excellence in its next 100 years. Our exceptional educators provide individualized instruction in a warm, nurturing environment where every student feels known. We have made vital and strategic improvements in our programs and facilities, and we have a strong strategic vision and leadership for the school. As the parent of a Wilson alum, it is clear to me that Wilson challenges our students, identifies their talents and passions, and creates opportunities that change lives.

I would like to thank all of you for making Wilson such a wonderful place. I am deeply grateful to our current parents who entrust Wilson with educating your children, to our outstanding teachers and staff who provide such an exceptional experience for our children each and every day, and to our many friends who believe in our mission and provide generous support to ensure the success of the school for today’s children and many generations to come. Wilson is a special community, and I am thankful to be a part of it.

Sincerely,

Ashley George GillBoard President

The Tradition of Excellence Continues

We are grateful for the community support that enables The Wilson School to provide unprecidented opportunities for our students, educators and staff.

Together, we are able to consistently achieve beyond the national norms for independent schools in the areas of faculty tenure, investment in professional development and student achievement.

Thank you!
