RE: Emergency Medicine Core Curriculum Rounds (aka Tintinalli Rounds)
Hello residents,
The core curriculum rounds are a mandatory part of the year’s educational program and animportant component of your residency. For those of you that are not familiar with theserounds, they involve each resident reading in advance a set of topics assigned for eachmonth. The topics covered are specified by the chapter titles in Emergency Medicine: AComprehensive Study Guide, 7
th Edition, edited by Judith Tintinalli. You do not necessarily
have to read the Tintinalli textbook. You may choose to read Rosen, review articles, or othersources. However, you are responsible for covering the information at least at the level ofdetail found in the Tintinalli textbook. If you choose to stick with the textbook, reading willinvolve approximately 150 to 200 pages per month (or 5 to 6 pages per day). Assignedchapters will jump around in the textbook to avoid monotony; reading nothing but 200 pagesof toxicology all in one month can get arduous.
The quiz portion of the rounds will be sent out to you about one week in advance. It will actas a guide or your reading. We use these questions and your answers to guide ourdiscussion about selected topics. Usually, discussion will concentrate on “core” knowledgeand material that often appears on certification and fellowship exams. Attendance will berecorded. Exceptions are made for those who are on out-of-town rotations or vacation.
I hope that you will find these rounds to be useful and helpful in being an incentive to read ona regular basis.
Have fun, and good luck.
Al
