2013-14 Seawolf Corporate Partnership

I n its 36th year of NCAA competition, UAA Athletics continued its run among the na-

tion’s elite in 2012-13. With the nationally ranked outdoor track & field squads still in competition, the Seawolves again ranked among the top 15 programs nationally in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup winter stand-ings, boosted by the first-ever podium finish for the men’s cross country team. UAA has cap-tured three Great Northwest Athletic Confer-ence team titles and finished no lower than fourth in any of its seven GNAC sports through April. In addition, Seawolves from all sports combined for a record 3.20 overall grade-point average in calendar year 2012, marking the 16th time in the last 19 years that the 3.0 barrier has been broken.

Women's Basketball The Seawolves rallied to win their last seven regular-season games, securing the program’s seventh straight winning season at 17-10, and

tying for third in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at 11-7. UAA set 13 school rec-ords, won the title of its own AT&T Hoops Classic in December, and recorded yet another victory over a Div. I opponent with a 73-47 blowout of North Dakota State in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. Seniors Alysa Horn and Sasha King were both All-GNAC Second Team honorees, while Jessica Madison

earned the GNAC Freshman of the Year award. Men's Basketball The men’s basketball team earned its eighth straight winning season with an 18-9 overall record in 2012-13, just missing its third straight NCAA Tournament berth and finishing third — behind two teams ranked top-5 nationally — in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings. UAA equaled its best-ever finish in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout in fourth place, defeating Div. I programs UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount, while post-ing season sweeps of longtime rivals Alaska Fairbanks and Montana State Billings. Junior guard Kyle Fossman was a First Team All-GNAC selection, sophomore guard Teancum Stafford was Second Team All-GNAC, and senior center Liam Gibcus earned honorable mention status.

Seawolves complete another stellar year in ’12-13

Kodiak product Alysa Horn led the women’s basketball program to another winning season and graduated this May with a 3.67 overall GPA.

Haines native Kyle Fossman captured First Team All-GNAC honors in 2012-13.

Men’s & Women’s Cross Country The men’s and women’s cross country teams concluded the 2012 slate with a program-best third-place result on the men’s side and a sixth-place finish on the women’s side at the NCAA Div. II Cross Country Championships in No-vember. The Seawolves were led by men’s in-dividual champion in senior Micah Chelimo – the National Athlete of the Year – and by a run-ner-up performance from junior Susan Ta-nui. Combined, the Sea-wolves furnished four All-America honors. Chelimo and Tanui also swept the West Region Championships titles to lead a pack of 13 Sea-wolves with all-region honors, and UAA earned both GNAC team titles for the third straight season, landing 11 on the all-conference team. Chelimo and Tanui were named GNAC Male and Female Runners of the Year, respectively, while Sarah Freistone earned GNAC Freshman of the Year and Michael Friess swept both the coaching honors.

Gymnastics The gymnastics team turned in one of the best years in program history in 2013, with its sea-son average score of 191.190 among 17 newly established school records. The Seawolves also set season marks on vault, beam and floor, while freshman M’rcy Matsunami broke the individual all-around average mark at 38.539. In January, UAA earned its first-ever dual vic-tory against longtime rival Seattle Pacific, and in February the Seawolves closed out their home season with their second-highest score ever at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex with a 192.850 against Eastern Michigan. Matsunami earned three All-Mountain Pacific Sports Fed-eration honors, while junior Emily Petersen earned a pair and sophomore Morgan Cook had one.

Hockey The hockey team concluded the 2012-13 cam-paign with a 4-25-7 overall record and a 2-20-6 slate in league play, falling to eventual Frozen Four qualifier St. Cloud State in the first round of the WCHA Playoffs. UAA earned a regular-season victory over then-No. 14 in December, plus a come-from-behind 5-4 win at Michigan Tech. The Seawolves won the Kendall Hockey Classic for the second straight year, while land-ing a program-high-tying 14 on the WCHA Ac-ademic All-Conference Team and six to the WCHA Scholar-Athlete Team. Men's & Women's Skiing The ski teams complet-ed the 2013 slate with their 30th top-10 team result at the NCAA Championships, finish-ing seventh with 493.5 points. Seawolf new-comer Marine Dusser led the pack with two All-America results on the Nordic side, while senior Andreas Adde, juniors Lukas Ebner and Lasse Moelgaard-Nielsen and freshman Viktor Braennmark were also crowned All-Americans. The Sea-wolves finished the RMISA/NCAA West

Regional Championships in sixth place with eight top-15 showings, and were sixth at the end of the regular-season team standings with 2,642 points. Combined, the Seawolves regis-tered 19 individual top-5 results throughout the season.

Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track and Field The indoor track & field teams concluded their first season of competition in stellar fashion. The Seawolves qualified 12 student-athletes to the NCAA Championships, where they amassed 10 All-America honors and an NCAA Champion in junior Micah Chelimo. Com-bined, 15 Seawolves received All-West Region honors, while Chelimo and head coach Michael Friess were recognized as the West Region’s Male Athlete and Coach of the Year, respec-tively. The UAA women’s team came away with the team title at the GNAC Champion-ships, while the men’s squad took second. All told at GNACs, 15 Seawolves earned all-conference honors, while the teams registered eight individual and relay titles. Chelimo and Friess were acknowledged on the GNAC front as well, along with Karolin Anders, who took home the GNAC Female Freshman of the Year award.

Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Having firmly established themselves among the nation’s elite track & field programs, the Seawolves did not disappoint again in 2013. Led by All-Americans Susan Tanui, Ruth Keino and Karolin Anders, the women’s team finished a program-best seventh at the NCAA Championships, while the men’s team finished 16th with the All-America javelin duo of Franz Burghagen and national champion Cody Par-ker. On the conference circuit, the Seawolf women captured their first-ever league champi-onship as they became only the second GNAC school ever to sweep the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field titles. Sprinter Grace Morgan, Anders and Keno both earned two league titles, while Cody Thomas captured UAA’s first decathlon crown on the men’s side.

Volleyball The volleyball team extended the program rec-ord with its fifth straight winning season, fin-ishing 16-10 overall. The Seawolves went 11-7 for 4th place in the GNAC to mark their fourth consecutive winning record and top-4 league finish. After putting together a 5-match win streak in September and capturing their own SpringHill Suites Invitational championship, they forged a 5-2 mark in October. Individual-ly, UAA produced the GNAC’s Newcomer of the Year with Jodi Huddleston, while Julia Mackey shared the league’s Freshman of the Year award. Mackey and Kimya Jafroudi were both voted to All-GNAC, with Huddleston gaining honorable-mention status.

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association, col-lege hockey's most historic, tradition-rich and successful conference, proudly marks it's 62nd season of men's competition and 15th season of women's competition 2013-14.

Founded in 1951 with seven original members as the Midwest Collegiate Hockey League (MCHL), on to the Western Intercollegiate Hockey League (WIHL) in 1953 and then to the Western Colle-giate Hockey Association (WCHA) in 1959, the league has adapted and evolved on numerous oc-casions over its distinguished history, always with a mindset of growing the game and assisting de-veloping programs however possible. The new-look men's WCHA for 2013-14 covers a wide, diverse geographical area that includes five time zones and consists of ten quality institutions that offer the best in both educational and athletic en-vironments in University of Alabama Huntsville, University of Alaska Anchorage, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Bemidji State University, Bowling Green State University, Ferris State Uni-versity, Lake Superior State University, Michigan Technological University, Minnesota State Uni-versity, Mankato and Northern Michigan Univer-sity. The highly-successful women's WCHA con-sists of eight member teams in Bemidji State Uni-versity, University of Minnesota, University of Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State University, Mankato, University of North Dakota, Ohio State University, St. Cloud State University and Uni-versity of Wisconsin.

No collegiate athletic conference, in any sport, can top the impressive list of national scale team accomplishments of the WCHA – on both the men's and women's sides. Since 1951, teams rep-resenting this Association have earned a record 37 men's national championships and since its founding for 1999-2000, women's WCHA-

member teams have garnered a record 14 consec-utive national championships. In addition, men's WCHA-member teams have finished as the na-tional runner-up another 27 times.

The WCHA men's league has produced a record 16 Hobey Baker Memorial Award Winners – giv-en annually to the top player in Division 1 college hockey, while the women's league is home to six Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winners. The men's and women's WCHA swept the honors in 2012-13, with Drew LeBlanc of St. Cloud State winning the Hobey Baker and Amanda Kessel of Minnesota winning the Patty Kazmaier.

The league's official website, WCHA.com, is be-ing relaunched with an all-new look for 2013-14, and includes the fully-functional WCHA.com/mobile site.

Community Outreach

A DOPT A UNIVERSITY…The depart-ment sponsors an “Adopt a University”

program with Anchorage and Mat-Su Valley public high schools as well as some Anchor-age-area private schools for the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. The pro-gram allows extensive interaction between visiting Shootout teams and local high school students. Students can learn more about their adopted university while offering support through cheerleaders, band, trainers and sports information. The local schools may also get involved with providing supple-mental practice sites, as well as the Thanks-giving Dinner program.

S UPPORT FOR NON-PROFITS…Each year UAA Athletics adopts a non-

profit program – generally focusing on health and/or youth issues – to support on a depart-ment-wide basis. Our current non-profit part-ner is the Children’s Hospital at Providence Hospital. In the past, UAA Athletics has sup-ported programs such as Nothing But Nets, Shots for Tots, Alaska Special Olympics, Alaska SafeKids, The V Foundation, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Anchorage Center for Families, the Anchorage Immun-ization Partners Coalition, Children’s Miracle Network, Life Alaska and the Alaska Litera-cy Program.

A THLETIC SPEAKERS BUREAU…The department’s coaches and adminis-

trators are frequent speakers at youth team banquets and civic organization luncheons, promoting Seawolf athletics in addition to educating the public about key issues in col-lege athletics.

R EADING WITH THE SEA-WOLVES...For years UAA student-

athletes have been active in the community, especially through reading programs at An-chorage-area elementary schools. That activi-ty has been formalized in a program called Reading With The Seawolves, whereby a cross-section of student-athletes visit differ-ent elementary schools each year to share their favorite children’s books.

S CHOOL CLINICS…The department’s coaches are frequent speakers at clinics

throughout the state, sharing their expertise with elementary and secondary school coach-es seeking to enhance their skills.

W OMEN’S VOLLEYBALL, HOOPS CLINICS…The women’s volleyball

and basketball teams have been active with such activities as post-game clinics and Jun-ior High and Girl Scout Nights at home con-tests.

T ICKET DONATIONS…The department provides tickets and door prizes to ele-

mentary schools for programs that promote academic achievement.

S PORTS CAMPS...Each summer UAA coaches host a variety of youth skills

camps that are both fun and challenging. Among others, these include the popular Kendall Jump Shot basketball camp under the direction of men’s basketball head coach Rusty Osborne and the Seawolf Volleyball Camps under the direction of Chris Green.

NCAA Rules For Sponsors

Q Who is a “representative of the institu-tion's athletics interests”?

A Any individual who is a member of the institu-tion’s athletics booster club, has made dona-

tions to the booster club or the athletics department, is involved in any manner in recruiting prospects or in providing benefits (e.g., summer jobs) to enrolled student-athletes, or is otherwise involved in promot-ing the institution’s athletics program.

Q Is the institution responsible for the acts of athletics representatives and booster sup-

port groups?

A Yes.

Q What could happen if a sponsor violates an NCAA rule?

A In addition to any sanctions meted out to the University, sponsors or boosters could also

forfeit benefits or privileges if they have engaged in conduct that is determined to be a violation of NCAA legislation.

Q Is it permissible for a sponsor to provide to a student-athlete or friend any benefit or

special arrangement?

A No. The NCAA considers these arrangements as an “extra benefit,” and they are specifically

prohibited. Examples of extra benefits include but are not limited to the following. 1. Special discount payment arrangement, or credit on a purchase (e.g., airline ticket, clothing). 2. Services (e.g., laundry, dry cleaning, tailoring). 3. A loan of money in any amount. 4. A guarantee or bond. 5. The use of an automobile. 6. The purchase of meals or services at commer-cial establishments. 7. Transportation to or from a summer job. 8. A benefit connected with off-campus housing (e.g., individual television sets or stereo equip-ment, specialized recreational facilities, room fur-nishings or appointments of extra quality or quan-tity.). 9. Signing or cosigning a note with an outside agency to arrange a loan. 10. Selling or giving a student-athlete tickets to an athletics, institution or community event. 11. The use of personal properties (e.g., boats, summer homes, cars, stereos) 12. Providing Christmas or birthday gifts. 13. Permitting use of and payment for long dis-tance telephone calls.

The information contained on this page is de-signed to provide a brief summary of NCAA rules and regulations for “representatives of the University of Alaska Anchorage interests,” which include corporate sponsors.

According to the NCAA, the control and conduct of UAA’s intercollegiate athletics program shall in-clude being held accountable for the acts of all individ-uals that have been identified as “athletic representa-tives.”

This information should be considered only as a guide to a general understanding of the NCAA rules with a view to avoiding involvement in a violation of NCAA legislation which might result in the loss of an individual’s eligibility or disciplinary action against UAA.

We strongly suggest that if you are not absolutely certain about an NCAA rule, contact the UAA Athletics Department before proceeding.
