EditorialA long and intense school year has ended. It began with the birth of a new degree pro-gram, Musical Theatre, at the same time the second year of the Bolonia degree pro-grams, defined by the new Plan of Studies, reached their equator. Despite the difficultiesand changes enforced by the rapid implantation of these changes, our school has bri-lliantly shown once more that between classes, workshops, and final projects we arecapable of premiering no fewer than 45 plays. The final projects this year were especiallynotable: Terminal, Meeting, Eat a Bite, Totum Revolutum or The Wall. They are clearexamples of organization and teamwork, excellently piloted by their tutors. High levelartists and officials from different places have visited: from José Carlos Plaza to PeterSellars (to only name two). The number of bilateral agreements signed with diverse pu-blic and private institutions has also multiplied: currently more than 35 schools in 17countries of the European Union. The Department for Advancement and Artistic Deve-lopment has a growing need for support. Together with the Picccolo Teatro in Milan andthe ISADAC school in Rabat, the Jose Estruch Association has piloted the Samira pro-ject. All of these initiatives would be impossible without the involvement of the entirescholastic community, from the administrative staff and services, professors and stu-dents. Thank you all for your efforts.

Our intention is to continue fomenting the collaboration in different areas. In a world inwhich global communication is ever easier, huge cultural barriers remain which inhibiteasy exchange within our artistic disciplines. In this same way the three different govern-mental administrations in Madrid need to achieve the integration of the arts, combiningforces an inevitable transversal collaboration in the face of the deepening economiccrisis.

Financed by AECID and in collaboration with thePiccolo Teatro in Milan, the corporative theatricalproject Samira... (2011-2012) has been developedbetween Morocco, Spain and Italy with the followingpremise: to work on a creative process with sharedresponsabilities between the three; expand horizonsthrough working with professionals from othercountries; select a theme the Moroccan studentscould relate to without systematically avoidingpotentially conflictive topics —western theatre wouldnot exist without conflict—; produce an entertainingshow as a result of the ethical goals; exposewestern historical errors and prejudice about the“Moors”, and investigate the prejudices andmeasures the Arab world sometimes puts beforeany other assessment in their relations with thewestern world; to make our workshop a space fordialogue and debate about all these topics only totake them public afterwards. In May 2012 wehappily concluded.

From May 24th thru 26th the RESAD was full of international activities. The presentation of “Samira…” (a project organized on three fronts by thePiccolo Teatro, the R.E.S.A.D, I.S.A.D.A.C. of Marruecos) coincided withthe last meeting of the network of European theatre schools École desÉcoles. Two new schools, from Switzerland and Norway, also joined theorganization for the first time. During the work sessions, Sverre Doal(Denmark), was again elected president of the organization. Current andfuture activities for the next two years were outlined, mainly orientedtowards meetings between professors from the different schools and themembers of EdE integrated in the European Seminar Grundtvig (lead bythe RESAD/Estruch between 2010 and 2012), part of the sessions wasdedicated to evaluating what was learned and how the project wasmanaged, and finalizing the process for the general report presentationand assigning different parts to the different countries. The debatefollowing the performance of “Samira…” was perhaps the most enrichingmoment, the inter-cultural and mixed nature of the project has much incommon with the trajectory of the EdE itself. Different areas of the Schoolhosted the Moroccan actors and actresses, Italian, Moroccan and Frenchdirectors, professors and professionals from Norway, France, Italy,Denmark, Spain, Switzerland, Great Britain, Brussels, and Germany...agreat pleasure supported by everyone’s hard work which we would like tothank.

Symbolism and Modernism in the Spanish Theatre

A day with José Carlos PlazaOn May 21st we met with the stage director José Carlos Plaza, in an eventorganized by the Acting Department. He spoke on dramatic texts, the actor'sdedication to analysis and the incarnation of this work.

The actor's responsibility in making decisions when preparing rehearsals, thedepth of the syntactic and semantic study of the text, the contexts generatingtransitions and subtexts, the incorporation of words with action and kno-wledge —progressively creating as the study advances, the director's diffe-rent options for creative input...the Rigor...Generosity...Love of theatre.... Thespeaker developed these and other concepts with criteria and a sense ofhumor. Students and teachers participated in the event, overall expressingtheir enthusiasm.
