We are proud to present our 2012/13 season – and once again, we’re connecting you with the most important creators and trends in American theatre today!

Spend a season with PTC at our beautiful Suzanne Roberts Theatre and you will be exposed to diverse viewpoints and compelling themes to stimulate your intellect and tap into your deepest emotional reserves. A PTC production does more than entertain; it also fosters an ongoing exchange of ideas. Each production represents an opportunity to meet our playwrights and share your thinking with the visiting experts who comprise our panels and talk-back events. From artists like Susan Stroman and John Kander to influential thought leaders from Philadelphia and beyond, interacting with people who shape our world is the core of the Philadelphia Theatre Company experience.

Our season opens with Stars of David, a world premiere musical adaptation of the best-selling book of interviews by Abigail Pogrebin, first seen in our new works festival, PTC@Play. This snapshot of Jewish faith and identity through interviews with public figures, will be transformed into songs by some of America’s best composers and lyricists.

The Mountaintop, by visionary young playwright, Katori Hall, managed to capture London’s Olivier Award for Best New Play, beating out a distinguished roster of established British writers.

You will understand why when we present her fresh and surprising reimaging of an historic night in the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In March, we are thrilled to present Seminar, the sophisticated and knowing comedy about aspiring young writers from Theresa Rebeck, creator of TV’s hit series, Smash. Rebeck was once a playwright-in-residence at PTC, and her meteoric rise to the top makes us doubly excited to bring her back this spring.

We are delighted to close our season with the Philadelphia premiere of Venus in Fur, the sexy and surprising pas de deux from our friend David Ives, theatrical mastermind of All in the Timing and PTC’s world premiere of Lives of the Saints.

And happily, PTC@PLAY is back, again with the extraordinary support of both the Knight and Wyncote Foundations! Our annual festival of new works packed the house last winter with two weeks of staged readings, talk-backs and social events. This super-charged gathering of artist, audience and creativity showcased thirteen new American plays; so come meet the future with our latest crop this February.

You don’t have to be Jewish to connect with this funny and engrossing song-cycle featuring original music by composer/lyricists William Finn, Tom Kitt, Marvin Hamlisch, Sheldon Harnick and many others!

A gripping reimagining of the events taking place the night before the assassination of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After delivering his magnificent and memorable “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech, an exhausted and defeated Dr. King retires to Room 306 at the Lorraine Motel where he encounters a mysterious and spirited stranger as an epic storm rages outside.

No stranger to PTC (All in the Timing and Lives of the Saints), the cunningly comedic David Ives tells a darkly seductive tale introducing us to Vanda, an unusually talented young actress determined to land the lead in Thomas’ new play based on the classic erotic novel, Venus in Fur. Vanda’s emotionally charged audition for the gifted but demanding playwright/director becomes an electrifying game of cat and mouse that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality, seduction and power, love and sex.

VENUS IN FUR

Thanks to support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Wyncote

Foundation, this season’s PTC@PLAY will highlight two weeks of events featuring staged

readings of new American work by both emerging and established playwrights, as well

as provocative and illuminating panel discussions.

Last winter, PTC@PLAY staged six readings, including works by Michael Hollinger, Jennifer

Haley (winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize), Charles Busch, Samuel D. Hunter, and

recent PONY Fellowship prize winner, Dominique Morisseau. Look for them on stages

throughout the country in the near future. Additionally, PTC presented an evening of

shorts by emerging Philly playwrights and a live broadcast panel discussion on the

American musical. We also honored playwright Bill Cain with the inaugural Terrence

McNally New Play Award. Cain’s new work, Unvarnished, chronicles the life of Philadelphia

artist Thomas Eakins.

audience a chance to see behind-the-scenes of each production as

well as discuss the ideas and issues raised by each show.

MEET-THE-ARTISTS (MTA)Our post-show MTA events allow the audience to learn about the

creation of each production and ask the cast questions. MTA guests

have included actress Kathleen Turner, actor/playwright Lorenzo

Pisoni, director Joe Calarco, and actor Haley Joel Osment.
