Renewable energy: Making Green Power Competitive
20
• Renewable energy at Infosys
• One of the largest installation of solar water
heater in the country @ 6 lakh litres/day
• Currently purchasing 60 million units of
renewable power
• Currently installing onsite Solar PV/Micro wind
plants
• R&D of Solar Thermal technology
• Helping drive Policy Level Changes
• Succeeded in persuading Karnataka regulators
for removing cross subsidy
• Karnataka has introduced voluntary ‘Green
Power Tariff’
• Open access now allowed in Tamil Nadu

Water Conservation: Mysore Case Study
Initiatives in Mysore campus:
• Recycled water used for flushing in
2250 hostel rooms – saving 2.5 lakh
litres of fresh water everyday
• Flow restrictors installed in showers
and taps in 10,000 hostel rooms –
saving 4 lakh litres of fresh water
everyday
• Water leakage arresting and more
efficient housekeeping practices in
hostels – saving about 3 lakh litres
every day
• Mysore campus sources about 60%
of its daily fresh water requirements
from these dug wells

100% Water Sustainability by Rain Water Harvesting
Rain water harvesting
• 8 reservoirs built in Mysore – total capacity 38 Million litres
• 7 reservoirs built in Mangalore – total capacity 35 Million litres
• 3 reservoirs built in Pune – potential capacity of 90 Million litres
• 4 reservoirs built in Hyderabad – potential capacity of 130 Million litres
The amount of rain water sequestered in our Indian campuses is estimated at more than
4.3 Billion litres every year; which is about 123% of our annual water consumption
![Page 25: 20120228_Sustainability in Action_ Rohan Parikh](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022052618/553586465503467c7a8b45fd/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)

Goals in Water efficiency
Water efficient fixtures:
Taps <4 lts/min
Shower heads 6 lts/min
Water Urinals 0.5 lts/flush
EWCs 6/3 lts/flush (dual flush)
Current Consumption New design standard
Per capita consumption for SDB 45 lts/day 30 lts/day
Campus per capita water consumption 65-70 lts/day 45 lts/day

Biogas plant in Mysore campus – Recycling food waste
28
• Carbon footprint reduction of nearly 200
tons/year
• Biogas plants being built in all other
campuses as well
• Goal - 100% recycling of organic waste
within the campuses

29
Chemical Reduction Initiative
• Standardized the usage of housekeeping chemicals in all campuses
resulted in reduction of 75% in the number of chemicals used
• Chemical fertilizers used in landscaping has been replaced with
organic manure
• We will be using only Green seal chemicals for housekeeping going
forward
• We are in process of replacing all pesticides with organic substitutes
• Chemical free water treatment being tested and deployed for air
conditioning water treatment
![Page 30: 20120228_Sustainability in Action_ Rohan Parikh](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022052618/553586465503467c7a8b45fd/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
